International Criminal Police Organization's rejection of the Palestinian attempt to join its ranks is "an important achievement," says Foreign Ministry • PM Netanyahu: Israel is breaking through to the international sphere, fight will continue at U.N.
Israel lauded Interpol's decision on Tuesday 
to reject a bid by the Palestinian Authority to join its ranks, 
commending the France-based International Criminal Police Organization 
for not allowing the Palestinians to politicize it.
Interpol comprises 190 member states, making 
it the second largest international organization after the United 
Nations. The Palestinian membership petition was discussed during the 
organization's 85th general assembly in Indonesia, where 62 delegates 
voted against the Palestinian bid, 56 voted in favor, and 37 abstained.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the decision, attributing it to Israel's considerable public diplomacy efforts.
"This morning we thwarted a Palestinian attempt to join Interpol," Netanyahu said in a short statement released Tuesday.
"This was made possible thanks to the efforts 
of the Foreign Ministry and National Security Council, and they have my 
gratitude. Our fight will continue at the U.N. Security Council as well.
 Israel is breaking through to the international sphere and this will 
show in all U.N. bodies and international organizations."
A statement by the Foreign Ministry said the 
ministry and the Israel Police "worked under the guidance of Prime 
Minister Netanyahu to foil the Palestinian move. This vote is an 
important achievement. It reflects the change in Israel's status and the
 success marked by Israeli public diplomacy."
