Somali fraud scheme exposes billions siphoned from US, one state set to crack down - John Solomon

by John Solomon

Somali fraud scheme not limited to Minnesota: Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek is imposing new requirements that remittance payment businesses ensure that customers are lawfully in the U.S. before they can send money to foreign countries. He hopes other states follow suit.

The Somali immigrant fraud scandal in Minnesota has put an uncomfortable spotlight on foreign remittance payments schemes that siphon billions of dollars a year from America to overseas. Although national attention has been focused on Minnesota, another state is poised to launch a crackdown.

Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek told Just the News he is teaming up with the state legislature to impose new requirements that remittance payment businesses ensure that customers are lawfully in the United States before they can send money to foreign countries, and he hopes other states will follow suit.

Cutting off incentives for illegal immigrants

"Missouri is stepping up by cutting off one of the biggest remaining incentives for illegal immigration, which is unverified foreign money transfers, because the economy is something that drives everybody to come to the United States," Malek said in a wide-ranging interview with the John Solomon Reports podcast this week.

Malek said his research found that more than $200 billion leaves the United States annually through remittances, with Mexico alone receiving over $52 billion. Some sizable portion of that involves illegal immigrants, most of whom crossed the border during the Biden years.

"It has been found that at least $4.4 billion in remittances sent to Mexico have been tied to cartel money laundering through small wire transfers," he said. "Cartels don't sneak money across the border or throw the bag across the border. They wire it. And if we are serious about crushing cartels, we have to shut down their financial arteries."

Malek, a lawful U.S. immigrant who worked 16 years to become a U.S. citizen, ran last year for the state treasurer's job on a promise he would help President Donald Trump end the scourge of illegal immigration. Part of that effort includes stopping illegal immigrants from sending money overseas that they earned in the U.S. without paying taxes, he said.

"I'm making this distinction very clear: legal versus illegal immigration. I am all for legal immigration. I am not for illegal immigration. And what we saw is the diversity of the last four years, during the Biden administration, the floodgates were open on the southern border," he explained.

The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, in conjunction with the House Committee on Homeland Security, reports that over 1.7 million known "gotaways" — illegal immigrants who have evaded Border Patrol — are now living in the interior of the United States without documentation and without having undergone any vetting by immigration officials.

"We did not know who entered, who came, and then these people are working here. They undercut the paychecks of American citizens, and then we are just left with a bill on our hands, and then, without paying any taxes. This money is going out of the country [but] we do not know to where," Malek added.

Just the News first reported in August 2024 that on Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's watch, hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were defrauded from social safety net programs intended to feed the hungry or help families with autistic children, with the perpetrators often being Somali immigrants in that state.

Somali immigrants sent money that landed in al-Queda-affiliated groups

Since then, more than seven dozen defendants have been charged by federal prosecutors, and authorities recently revealed some of the taxpayer monies that were stolen were sent overseas through remittance payments and some may have landed in the coffers of the al-Qaeda-aligned terror group Al-Shabaab.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer recently told Just the News he believes such fraud occurred in other immigrant communities in blue states and has begun a broader investigation.

Preventative effort to stop illegal immigrants from sending money overseas

Malek said his partnership with the state legislature is designed to enact a law in Missouri that will require remittance businesses like Western Union and Moneygram to verify a customer's lawful immigration status prior to processing a foreign remittance; retain verification records for five years to ensure transparency; and to report violations to state regulators, with penalties including fines equal to 25% of the transfer.

"I would like to see this as more of a preemptive effort," Malek said. "We already have a mechanism in our state where you cannot obtain a driver's license if you cannot prove your legal status in the state. So we are going to use the same mechanism for these money transfers.

"You cannot initiate a money transfer overseas unless you can verify somebody's legal status in Missouri, and hopefully this takes over and goes to every state across the 50 United States, that we can stop this illegal migration of money to different countries," he added.

A vehicle with a Hanukkah ornament fixed atop was firebombed in Melbourne on Thursday before dawn, according to the Victoria Police and Community Security Group Victoria.

The car, with what police described as a billboard, was set alight while in the driveway of a St. Kilda East property, with no one inside at the time.

The car’s interior was extensively damaged, and multiple windows appeared to be smashed, local media reported. Police told The Jerusalem Post that residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Victoria Police said that they have identified someone "who may be able to assist with their investigation" and are searching for them.

CSG Victoria said on Facebook that the Jewish community security organization had already been operating at a "heightened level" with increased patrols and would continue to do so.

Neighbours told the Herald Sun that it was clearly an antisemitic attack, but at this time the police did not respond to queries about possible motives.

Victoria Premier responds to the attack

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan said on X that she had been briefed on the incident and that the Jewish community rightly feared that it was an antisemitic incident.

"This is not what any family, street or community deserves to wake up to on Christmas Day in Australia," said Allan. "This little car has been driving around town spreading the Hanukkah and holiday cheer. I even saw one drive past when I was in Caulfield on Monday afternoon."

The Jewish Community Council of Victoria said in a statement that it thanked the police for their swift response, but that their community remains on edge with heightened fear and uncertainty.

"This is a continuation of the daily fear the Jewish community has had to live in for the past two years, and even more so after Bondi [Beach Massacre]," said the community group.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted on X that the Jewish community was still in mourning after the Bondi Beach terrorist attack last Sunday, and that the firebombing was another terrible act of antisemitism.

The Executive Council of Australian Jews stressed that the arson was part of a "pattern of unrelenting antisemitism" that included an arrest in Perth on Tuesday.

Western Australia Police had charged a 39-year-old Yangebup man for conduct to racially harass after investigating antisemitic comments made on social media. Police also found that he possessed a prohibited weapon and failed to store firearms properly.

Australia PM Albanese: 'There is no place in Australia for antisemitism'

Albanese responded to the Western Australia incident by assuring "there is no place in Australia for antisemitism, hate, and violent ideologies."

ECAJ President Daniel Aghion said that the continued pattern of antisemitic incidents, particularly the Sydney Hanukkah party terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 15 and wounded 40, highlighted the need for stronger laws and enforcement.

"This includes the banning of hateful language at protests," said Aghion. "The social permissiveness for such statements that has been created in this country over the last two years has led to an environment where a fringe element of Jew haters consider themselves authorised to engage in violent attacks."

Australian Jewish Association CEO Robert Gregory responded to the Melbourne arson saying that the incident also underscored the need for a national royal commission, despite Albanese's refusal. Gregory also questioned the effectiveness of the Australian government's legislative push for firearm control in the wake of the Bondi shooting, as the Melbourne attacker used a firebomb.

"The apparent use of a fire-bomb also raises serious questions about the effectiveness of Labor’s current focus on firearms rather than broader measures to address antisemitism," said Gregory.

Albanese said on Tuesday that his office would be going ahead with an internal review, and that he supported the New South Wales government's decision to have a royal commission.

The Australian government has been seeking a series of firearm reforms, including a national gun buyback, and limiting the number of firearms owned. NSW passed its own legislation restricting firearm ownership on Wednesday morning.

Trump Hands 21st Century to China, Reverses Biden's Ban on Selling Advanced Chips - Gordon G. Chang

by Gordon G. Chang

Whether or not Trump just gave away the century to China, he has definitely given the Chinese military better tools to kill Americans. Although the president in his Truth Social posting stated that licenses would be granted only for "approved customers," these chips will end up with military and other parties that threaten U.S. security.

  • "Rather than grow dependent, China will take Nvidia chips while they are available, use them to train models to compete with American frontier variants and continue to invest heavily in domestic alternatives like Huawei's Ascend chips. When those are good enough, the firms will drop Nvidia—and quickly." — Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder of the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, letter to the Wall Street Journal, December 21, 2025.

  • Alperovitch believes that America's only advantage in the AI race is its advanced chips. Trump, however, is giving the Chinese better chips than they now have.

  • "During the height of the Cold War, it was unthinkable for the U.S. to sell supercomputers to the Soviet Union, the equivalent of the GPUs today. We've never won technological competitions by arming our competitors—we've prevailed by preserving a clear and enduring advantage." — Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder of the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, referring to Graphics Processing Units, the specialized chips at the core of AI infrastructure, letter to the Wall Street Journal, December 21, 2025.

  • Whether or not Trump just gave away the century to China, he has definitely given the Chinese military better tools to kill Americans. Although the president in his Truth Social posting stated that licenses would be granted only for "approved customers," these chips will end up with military and other parties that threaten U.S. security. There is no way the U.S. can control their usage once they enter China. In China, Xi enforces "military-civil fusion," so the military has access to everything it wants.

  • The Trump administration is now conducting an interagency review — State, Energy, War, and Commerce — of the proposed sale of H200 chips to Chinese customers. We can only hope the review reverses an unjustifiable giveaway to China.

President Donald Trump's decision this month to reverse a Biden-era ban on the export to China of advanced chips and approve the sale of Nvidia H200 chips is a grave mistake, wrong both strategically and morally. (Illustrative image generated by Google Gemini).

Nvidia has told Chinese customers that it can start shipping them its second-most powerful chip, the H200, before mid-February.

President Donald Trump's decision this month to reverse a Biden-era ban on the export to China of advanced chips and approve the sale of H200s is a grave mistake, wrong both strategically and morally.

Trump, keeping a pre-election promise to tech billionaires, is giving China the means to surpass the United States in the critical race to dominate Artificial Intelligence (AI). Moreover, China will almost certainly use the chip for military purposes.

Trump, in a December 8 Truth Social posting, announced he had informed Chinese leader Xi Jinping that he would approve the sale of the H200.

"We will protect National Security, create American Jobs, and keep America's lead in AI," Trump wrote.

It is hard to see how both the first and third statements are true.

Those who say the U.S. should sell advanced chips argue that the U.S., with those sales, can keep China addicted to the American technology stack. They apparently imagine that China will keep buying inferior American semiconductors and therefore will slow the development of the Chinese chip industry.

Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, correctly calls this argument "a dangerous myth."

"Rather than grow dependent, China will take Nvidia chips while they are available, use them to train models to compete with American frontier variants and continue to invest heavily in domestic alternatives like Huawei's Ascend chips," he wrote in a December 21 letter to the Wall Street Journal. "When those are good enough, the firms will drop Nvidia—and quickly."

What Trump is actually doing is helping China bridge a crucial gap.

Xi, for more than a decade, has been determined to rid China of American chips. Semiconductors, for instance, were included in his infamous Made in China 2025 initiative.

Alperovitch believes that America's only advantage in the AI race is its advanced chips. Trump, however, is giving the Chinese better chips than they now have.

"During the height of the Cold War, it was unthinkable for the U.S. to sell supercomputers to the Soviet Union, the equivalent of the GPUs today," Alperovitch writes, referring to Graphics Processing Units, the specialized chips at the core of AI infrastructure. "We've never won technological competitions by arming our competitors—we've prevailed by preserving a clear and enduring advantage."

Trump is giving that advantage away. "The move," Reuters reported, discussing the H200 decision, "represents a major policy shift from the Biden administration, which banned advanced AI chip sales to China citing national security concerns." President Joe Biden, beginning in October 2022, imposed those and other needed rules.

"President Trump has fundamentally shifted his stance on China since his first term in office," Brandon Weichert, the National Interest's senior national security editor, told Gatestone this week. "In the first term, he embraced a robust strategy of deterrence, containment, and resistance to China's aggressive rise. In the second term, Trump has opted for a more cooperative rather than competitive framework."

"There are real reasons Trump made the shift, including promises he made to the so-called 'Broligarchs' — those tech titans who switched sides from the Biden-Harris ticket to the Trump-Vance ticket last year and who favor trade rather than conflict with China," Weichert added.

Weichert's explanation also reveals why Trump has allowed Chinese companies to access Nvidia's most advanced chips, based on the Blackwell architecture, in offshore data centers. Chinese internet tech giant Tencent has been using those chips in a data center in Japan's Osaka. Chinese companies Alibaba and ByteDance have accessed advanced Nvidia chips in Singapore and Malaysia.

Trump's Commerce Department in May rescinded the Biden "AI Diffusion" rule, which would have, as a practical matter, stopped Chinese customers from accessing advanced U.S. chips in offshore data centers.

In short, Trump has taken a series of actions that permit China to win the AI race. As is often said, whoever wins AI wins the 21st century.

Whether or not Trump just gave away the century to China, he has definitely given the Chinese military better tools to kill Americans. Although the president in his Truth Social posting stated that licenses would be granted only for "approved customers," these chips will end up with military and other parties that threaten U.S. security. There is no way the U.S. can control their usage once they enter China. In China, Xi enforces "military-civil fusion," so the military has access to everything it wants.

The Trump administration is now conducting an interagency review — State, Energy, War, and Commerce — of the proposed sale of H200 chips to Chinese customers. We can only hope the review reverses an unjustifiable giveaway to China.

Israeli Air Force unveils new rapid-response unit to stop October 7-style ground invasions - Yonah Jeremy Bob

by Yonah Jeremy Bob

New arm of the Air Force set up to jump into automatic action if war is declared • More helicopters ready to mow down attackers on border within an hour

The Israeli Air Force on Thursday unveiled its relatively new unit for preventing October 7-style ground invasions of Israel going forward, after it was caught completely unprepared for that role in 2023.

Conceptually, the idea is that helicopters should be deployable, some within several minutes and some within an hour, to mow down and bomb invaders, such that the ground border defenses are not left alone.

The new unit is part of a larger transformation led by Brig.-Gen. Gilad Bar Tal, shifting significant aspects of the Air Force's helicopter units from other tasks to border defense.

This shift also involves increasing the volume of helicopters, drones, and fighter jets which are constantly at ready for border defense and which are more broadly assigned to border defense efforts.

In addition, the number of Air Force platforms which can act within several minutes and the volume of bombs that the Air Force can drop within an hour is much higher than before.

Air Force helicopter pilots given more discretion to open fire

Moreover, the rules of engagement for helicopters now give much more discretion to open fire based on each individual pilot's assessment of the threat on the ground than prior to October 7.

Despite all of these proactive changes, the Air Force still is not returning anywhere near the volume of around 100 helicopters it had before the 2013-2014 era when it shut down its cobra helicopters units.

According to the IDF, if not for the October 7 invasion, the Air Force helicopter unit was due to be reduced to around 20.

Because of October 7 and the new approach that helicopters are critical to future border defense, the helicopter units will remain around 50, meaning double what it would have been, but still half of what it was a decade ago.

Some changes to Israeli Air Force protocol began shortly after October 7

Regarding the transformation led by Bar Tal, there are several aspects. Some of the change started soon after October 7, 2023.

The IDF has acknowledged that the Air Force had no plan ready to prevent a mass ground invasion, and would not even be able to fully modify the Air Force's deployments, resources, and assignments over a few months.

However, at this point, the IDF has noted that it has had multiple years working with the land forces in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria to learn how to better defend the borders and how to better work jointly with Israeli ground forces in general.

Next, the Air Force analyzed maps and the specific topography for each potential invasion area, South, North, West Bank. Israel also has borders with Jordan and Egypt.

Each border has its own specific challenges.

For example, if the Air Forces bombs specific potential invasion routes in the North, it can immediately slow an enemy invasion, whereas the same strategy in the South will not prevent a continued invasion as quickly since the topography is flatter and invaders can more easily continue their invasion even using off-road trajectories.

Also, the Air Force will work differently with Divisions 210 and 91 in the North, based on those divisions' firepower and maneuvering capacities, than it will with Division 143 in Gaza, or Division 877 in the West Bank.

The Air Force has complemented those involved in IDF probes of their unit as well as those non-air-force officials involved in ensuring that the lessons of the disaster will be implemented. These processes have helped the Air Force push through a variety of changes.

As part of the change, the Air Force formally added defending the borders as part of its primary mission, whereas before striking in enemy territory and especially against distant enemies was more of the focus.

In addition, the Air Force drafted directives for the new approach covering a variety of scenarios which had been ignored until October 7.

By this past February, Bar Tal, who also handles other missions related to helicopters, had selected a new commander who has the role on the day of any theoretical invasion to direct the Air Force operational response to land-based threats.

On December 9, the IDF held a  conference about the Air Force's defense of the borders, including all of the relevant ground force brigadier general and colonel ground force commanders.

Part of the process has included building a new target bank oriented around stopping land invasions as opposed to targeting top enemy leaders and new mission parameters.

During October 7, the Air Force attacked many targets in Gaza which were part of its -pre-war target bank, and these attacks did harm Hamas, but did not harm its invasion forces.

In terms of rapid reaction helicopters, there are twice as many ready at all times as pre-October 7, and even more during the day.

Likewise with drones, there are three to four as many available for rapid deployment as pre-war, and there are also a small number of additional fighter jets available for rapid land attacks.

If the helicopters and drones can be used to fire directly on individual invaders, the fighter jets would be used to drop larger bombs on invasion routes to blow up groups of invaders or to deter those invaders from proceeding forward when they see a huge bomb blow up in the exact trajectory where they have been ordered to advance.

Now the number of bombs that the Air Force can drop in the first hour has jumped from around 16 pre-war to around 60.

Next, the Air Force also has large C-130 aircraft available to transport larger numbers of infantry reinforcements to an invaded border at a much more rapid pace.

The IDF is also now training for all of these eventualities regularly in its drills.

Regarding the rules of engagement, as soon as the brigadier general in charge of a particular front announces the country is at war or that their number of attacking forces is larger than the number of defending Israeli forces, the whole entire new arm of the Air Force is set up to jump into automatic action.

In contrast, when Gaza Division commander Brig.-Gen. Avi Rosenfeld announced his front was at war at 6:47 a.m. on October 7, no one, including Rosenfeld understood that his forces were completely overwhelmed.

The IDF Southern Command only understood this around three hours later, severely slowing the response of sending reinforcements, including from the Air Force.

Regarding the Air Force, most units which came to the Gaza border did very little against Hamas because they did not believe they could fire on Hamas inside Israeli territory lest they strike Israeli civilians.

In contrast, the new rules of engagement mean that once the brigadier general front commander has said the enemy has more forces than his own, individual pilots have the authority and duty to fire on invaders within Israeli territory.

There are still dilemmas about what to do if the invaders have already taken hostages.

Israel to spend $110 billion on independent arms industry, PM Benjamin Netanyahu says - Anna Ahronheim

by Anna Ahronheim

"Our goal is to build an independent arms industry for the State of Israel and reduce the dependency on any party, including allies," Netanyahu said during a graduation ceremony for Air Force pilots.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday Israel would spend 350 billion shekels ($110 billion) on developing Blue and White arms to reduce dependency on foreign countries.

“I approved, along with the defense minister and finance minister, a sum of NIS 350 billion [$108 billion] over the next decade to build an independent Israeli munitions industry,” Netanyahu said during a graduation ceremony for Israeli Air Force pilots.

"We will continue to acquire essential supplies while independently arming ourselves," he continued.  “I don't know if a country can be completely independent but we will strive to ensure our arms are produced as much as possible in Israel, and that includes some aerial platforms.”

While Israel relies on the United States for its fighter planes, refuelers and helicopters, there are several local companies that build unmanned aerial platforms including Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries-IAI.

“Our goal is to build an independent arms industry for the State of Israel and reduce the dependency on any party, including allies. The finest minds in our defense industries are hard at work developing weapons systems that will guarantee Israel's advantage on the battlefield of the future."

Israel faced barrage of arms embargos during Gaza war

During the war between Israel and Hamas, many countries imposed various restrictions on military sales to Israel, such as arms embargoes. Those countries included friendly countries like Germany, the UK, and even the United States briefly under the Biden administration.

Spain approved a total arms embargo on Israel which forbids the European country from exporting any defense material or dual-use products or technologies to Israel and the import of any arms to Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called the war in Gaza a “genocide” and has called to ban anyone who has participated directly in the war from entering the country.

Nevertheless, official trade data indicates that Spain continues to buy weapons from Israel, reaching €7 million in 2024 and €10.2 million in 2025. Over the past year, Spain imported €6.8 million worth of bombs, grenades, torpedoes, mines, missiles, and similar munitions. Another €3.4 million worth of war weaponry and ammunition were also imported.

Australia has also been heavily critical of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has insisted that the country does “not sell arms to Israel. Yet, Australia’s defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy defended the country’s use of Israeli military systems, saying that the administration “makes no apology for getting the best possible equipment for the Australian Defense Force.”

Netanyahu previously proclaimed Israel must become 'super-Sparta'

In September, Netanyahu proclaimed that Israel should become a self-reliant economy with “autarkic characteristics” because of the global isolation the country was facing, and become a 21st century “super-Sparta.”

“We are Athens and Sparta. But we’re going to be Athens and super-Sparta,” he said during a speech at the Treasury. “There’s no choice; in the coming years, at least, we will have to deal with these attempts to isolate us.”

His comments sent shockwaves throughout the country, and he later backtracked saying that he meant the need for more independence in the defense industry.

Though Israel has a strong local defense and defense-tech industry, Israel continues to procure weapons from the United States as part of the long-term defense defense cooperation including the multi-billion Memorandum of Understanding.

The defense budget for 2026 has been set at NIS 112 billion, Defense Minister Israel Katz’s office said, significantly less than what the military had initially sought but up from the NIS 90b. that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich had demanded.

In 2026, Israel is set to allocate about 16 percent of its public budget to defense, around $35 billion out of an overall budget of $208 billion.

Alito rips Supreme Court majority as 'unwise' for blocking Trump's National Guard plan - Ashley Oliver

by Ashley Oliver

Conservative justice warns decision could limit federal government's ability to protect personnel during unrest

Justice Samuel Alito criticized the Supreme Court’s majority in a sharp dissent Tuesday after the high court decided 6–3 to temporarily block President Donald Trump from deploying the National Guard in Chicago.

Alito said the high court’s majority made "unwise" and "imprudent" determinations to reach its decision. The majority also did not give enough deference to Trump after the president found that agitators were hindering immigration officers and other federal personnel from doing their jobs in Chicago and that the National Guard needed to step in to help.

"Whatever one may think about the current administration’s enforcement of the immigration laws or the way ICE has conducted its operations, the protection of federal officers from potentially lethal attacks should not be thwarted," Alito wrote.

WHERE THE TRUMP ADMIN'S COURT FIGHT OVER DC NATIONAL GUARD STANDS IN WAKE OF SHOOTING

The lawsuit stemmed from Trump invoking a rarely used federal law to federalize about 300 members of the National Guard and deploy them to protect federal personnel and buildings.

The Trump administration argued that protesters were obstructing, assaulting and threatening ICE officers, and the National Guard was needed because Illinois’ resistant Democratic leaders and local law enforcement were not adequately addressing the matter, the administration said.

Illinois sued, and the lower courts blocked the National Guard’s deployment, finding that Trump had not satisfied criteria in the law that said the president could only use the reserved forces when he was "unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States." The Supreme Court’s decision upheld that finding while the case proceeds through the courts.

The Supreme Court's majority said in an unsigned order that "regular forces" meant the U.S. military, not ICE or other civilian law enforcement officers. The majority said that since Trump had not identified any justification for using the regular military for domestic purposes in Chicago, there was no way to exhaust that option before using the National Guard.

Alito, who was joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, objected, saying the majority prematurely raised and accepted an "eleventh-hour argument" about the meaning of "regular forces." Justice Neil Gorsuch issued a separate dissent.

The majority also took issue with the statute's language about executing laws, saying that if the National Guard soldiers were simply protecting federal officers, that would not amount to executing laws.

And, if the National Guard were executing laws, that could violate the Posse Comitatus Act, which says the military cannot generally act as a domestic police force unless Congress authorizes it to, the majority said.

Alito, an appointee of President George W. Bush, said he found it "puzzling" that the majority thought the Posse Comitatus Act was so relevant, saying the president could use the military for a "range of domestic purposes." The Constitution allows the president to use the military to respond to war, insurrection or "other serious emergency," Alito wrote.

The conservative justice also warned of broader implications of the majority's decision, as Trump has attempted to deploy the National Guard in other cities as part of a crackdown on immigration enforcement and street crime. The president has also been met with legal pushback in California and Portland, Oregon, but the Chicago case was the furthest along in the court system.

Requiring Trump to exhaust the use of other military forces before using the National Guard would lead to "outlandish results," Alito said.

"Under the Court’s interpretation, National Guard members could arrest and process aliens who are subject to deportation, but they would lack statutory authorization to perform purely protective functions," Alito wrote. "Our country has traditionally been wary of using soldiers as domestic police, but it has been comfortable with their use for purely protective purposes."

Illinois had argued that ICE protests were mostly peaceful and that local law enforcement had the unrest under control. The state would suffer irreversible harm if the courts did not block Trump from using the National Guard, state attorneys argued.

"The planned deployment would infringe on Illinois’s sovereign interests in regulating and overseeing its own law enforcement activities," the attorneys wrote, adding that Illinois' "sovereign right to commit its law enforcement resources where it sees fit is the type of ‘intangible and unquantifiable interest’ that courts recognize as irreparable."

Ukraine signals making part of Donetsk a demilitarized 'free economic zone' as part of peace deal - Misty Severi

The agreement to withdraw forces on both sides from the region, which still needs approval from Russia, would be a significant victory for President Donald Trump, whose administration drafted a 28-point plan for peace in Europe last month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated Tuesday that he would be willing to pull his troops from a strip of land in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, if Russia pulled its troops from a similar-sized area and made it a demilitarized “free economic zone."

The agreement to withdraw forces on both sides from the region, which still needs approval from Russia, would be a significant victory for President Donald Trump, whose administration drafted a 28-point plan for peace in Europe last month. This new potential agreement would be part of an updated 20-point plan.

Zelensky told reporters that he does not support the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Russian occupied territory, but said he felt there were few options to achieve peace, according to Politico.

“There are two options: either the war continues, or something will have to be decided regarding all potential economic zones," Zelensky said. “We have significantly brought most of the positions closer together. In principle, all other consensus in this agreement has been found between us and them.”

The European leader said that if Russia does agree to pull forces from Donetsk, which is part of the much larger Donbas region, which is mostly occupied by Russian troops, and then violates the peace agreement, global sanctions against the country would be restored.

He also noted that if Russia and Ukraine's parliament officially approve the updated plan, then a full ceasefire would enter into force immediately.

The plan additionally proposes Russia formally adopt a strategy of non-aggression toward Ukraine and Europe, and accepts Ukraine's eventual accession into the European Union.

The possible deal comes after Trump administration officials met with key Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Miami over the weekend.

AZ legislator proposes to ban transgender athletes from competing in girls' sports - Chris Woodward

by Chris Woodward

The Protect Girls’ Sports in Arizona Act (HCR2003) is from state Rep. Selina Bliss, R-Prescott. Bliss said it reinstates and strengthens the Save Women’s Sports Act of 2022.

(The Center Square) -

An Arizona legislator wants voters to decide whether school sports are designated male, female or co-ed.

The Protect Girls’ Sports in Arizona Act (HCR2003) is from state Rep. Selina Bliss, R-Prescott. Bliss said it reinstates and strengthens the Save Women’s Sports Act of 2022 (Senate Bill 1165), which bans transgender athletes from competing in girls' sports. Implementation of SB1165 has been delayed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

“What my ballot referral will do to complement that is to expand the provisions of SB1165 by including all schools and sports associations, so there’s the difference,” Bliss told The Center Square. “It gets it out of the legal court tie up, which is supposed to be determined next year, but it takes it straight to the voters to take care of this once and for all.”

It also helps Arizona’s Republican-controlled Legislature avoid a possible veto by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs. Republicans don't have enough seats to override her vetoes.

“We have a slim majority of Republicans in the House and Senate, but we have a Democrat in the governor’s seat, so the only way to get around the governor is to go straight to the ballot,” Bliss told The Center Square. “There’s two ways: A legislative referendum, which is what this is, to put it on the ballot, or a citizens’ initiative to put a citizens’ petition on the ballot.”

The ballot referral from Bliss would need approval in the House and Senate, something she believes she has at this time. If the Legislature approves the measure, the issue will go before voters in the Nov. 3, 2026 general election.

But how would it work exactly?

“You need a birth certificate if there’s doubt of the gender,” Bliss told The Center Square. “It would designate, not divide, sports teams as male, female and co-ed, so a biological male could compete in a male sport or a co-ed sport, but not a female sport.”

Schools, both public and private, would be responsible for taking care of all the designations. Bliss said there is no change there, adding that is how schools currently do those things.

Bliss noted she felt motivated to work on the referendum because she was an athlete in middle school and high school.

“Not only did it build my self-esteem and confidence, but it (sports) helped with potentially getting scholarships,” Bliss told The Center Square. “It is a competitive area to start with, female athletics, so the idea of allowing bio males to compete on female teams just makes it that much more challenging.”

Bliss was also a Girl Scout leader and volunteered as a coach for her daughter’s volleyball team.

“So I saw what it was like to have male and female sports at the school and to be an active participant in that, and I just want to support our kids like I was supported, and I supported my daughter as well, and her friends," she said.

Bliss added she learned early on from athlete-turned-activist Riley Gaines, the former University of Kentucky swimmer that has been speaking against efforts allowing transgender athletes in female sports. Gaines visited Arizona, where lawmakers passed the Save Women’s Sports Act.

“Judge Jennifer Zipps, in Tucson, heard a case that is tied up in the 9th Circuit on a pair of siblings, biological males that enrolled in a female sports team,” said Bliss. “So it is definitely an issue with our growing population, so it is time to address this issue with transparency, and that is what it is. It is just to be transparent as a parent when you enroll your child in a sports team, you are indicating I want my child to be on a female or male or co-ed team.”

The Center Square reached out to the Human Rights Campaign and did not receive a response. The American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona said it was closed until Jan. 5.

Georgetown University severs ties with UN’s Francesca Albanese over antisemitic remarks - Shoshana Baker

Georgetown University has removed Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur, following her antisemitic remarks, including justifying the October 7 attacks, after a campaign by UN Watch.

Georgetown University has severed its ties with Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur, due to her antisemitic statements, including those justifying the events of October 7, according to an article by UN Watch.

Albanese was previously listed on the "Other Affiliated Scholars" page of Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of International Migration. However, she has now been completely removed, and her information can no longer be found on the university's site. Her biography page has also reportedly been deleted.

The action taken by Georgetown University follows a significant campaign by UN Watch that highlighted Albanese's support for terrorism and antisemitism. The UN Watch article mentioned a 60-page document compiled by UN Watch that details Albanese's discriminatory remarks.

For over six months, UN Watch has been advocating for Georgetown University to remove Albanese from its faculty.

Hillel Neuer, the Executive Director of UN Watch, praised and welcomed the university's decision in a celebratory post on X/twitter, stating, “Thank you, [Georgetown]. It's time to expel all supporters of terrorism from our universities.”

A message for the UN and Universities alike

In the UN Watch report, Neuer emphasized that this decision sends an important message to both academic institutions and the United Nations, asserting that "Positions of authority at the United Nations do not grant immunity from accountability, and universities should not serve as safe havens for those who use their platforms to promote hatred."

Neuer also urged the UN to follow suit and remove Albanese from her position.

The UN Watch article highlighted Georgetown's alleged connections with Qatar, referencing a report from the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism, which stated that Georgetown University has received approximately $1 billion from Qatar since 2005. Additionally, the report found that Georgetown centers were minimizing the threat of Islamist extremism.

This is not the first time Albanese has faced backlash for her antisemitic rhetoric or her stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This past July, the United States sanctioned her for what Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as a campaign of political and economic warfare targeting the US and Israel, including efforts to weaponize courts against officials and companies.

"Albanese has spewed unabashed antisemitism, expressed support for terrorism, and open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West," the State Department announcement read.

The Jerusalem Post staff contributed to this report.

Pseudo-Recessions - Victor Davis Hanson

by Victor Davis Hanson

Clinton won in 1992 by selling a recession that was already over; the lesson for 2026 is simple—ignore real economic gains, and a fake downturn can still decide an election.

As the 1992 campaign approached, incumbent president George H.W. Bush was seen as a shoo-in for reelection.

The First Gulf War ended in 1991 with a spectacular U.S. victory at the head of a coalition that had expelled Saddam Hussein from Kuwait with few losses.

For much of 1991, Bush’s approval ratings hovered between 90 and 70 percent.

By February 1992, an obscure Arkansas governor, Bill Clinton, emerged as the favorite Democratic nominee. But he was written off as having little chance to knock off the popular Republican incumbent president with far more foreign affairs experience.

Bush, however, had just lost his brilliant 1988 campaign manager, Lee Atwater, to cancer. And third-party prairie-fire candidate Ross Perot had entered the race, drawing off conservative Bush support.

Most importantly, in 1990, the U.S. economy had experienced a mild recession that had bottomed out in early 1991.

By the 1992 election, the U.S. was headed to full recovery.

In the last six months of 1992, GDP rebounded at over an astonishing four percent.

The inflation rate in the months before the election was often less than three percent.

Even stubborn unemployment was starting to fall to 7.3%. The eight-month recession officially ended in March 1991, followed by continual positive economic growth.

No matter. The brilliant Clinton campaign still ran on the directive “It’s the economy, stupid” and the slogan “Putting people first.”

The Clinton theme song was the upbeat Fleetwood Mac hit “Don’t Stop,” highlighting the young Clinton-Gore ticket in supposed contrast to the 68-year-old Bush.

Key to the Clinton campaign rhetoric was the false charge of “the worst job growth since the Great Depression.” By November 1992, Clinton had convinced voters that the prior year’s recession was still in full force.

The doom-and-gloom, near-depression “recession,” together with Perot’s third-party candidacy and Bush’s sluggish campaign, won Clinton the presidency with 43% of the popular vote.

In response, the Bush campaign had tried to trumpet the administration’s many foreign policy successes.

The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989.

The Cold War ended in a U.S. victory.

Germany was reunified in October 1990.

In December 1989, Bush successfully removed the narco-dictator Manuel Noriega of Panama, who threatened the viability of the Panama Canal.

The Gulf War was won brilliantly by February 1991.

The nuclear START treaty was signed with the Soviet Union in July 1991, just before the USSR itself collapsed in December.

By any normal reckoning, Bush should have been a shoo-in: spectacular foreign policy successes and a rebounding economy after a brief recession that had ended 15 months before the November 1992 election.

Instead, the pseudo-recession of 1992 dominated the campaign. Indeed, Bush’s many achievements overseas were cleverly distorted by Clinton as proof that the globe-trotting president was more interested in the world abroad than “putting people first” at home.

As in Bush’s prior 1988 campaign, Lee Atwater would have torn the Clinton campaign apart as inexperienced and disingenuous. Atwater would have ordered Bush to talk nonstop about virtually no inflation, robust four percent economic growth, and declining unemployment.

Instead, the lackluster Bush campaign team never caught on and was crushed by Clinton, with help from the economic populist Ross Perot.

The pseudo-recession of 1992 should remind the Trump people not to repeat the same mistake in the 2026 midterms.

Trump’s first ten months of foreign policy achievements are almost as impressive as Bush’s entire four years.

He neutered the feared Iranian nuclear bomb project. He ensured Israel could devastate the terrorist cabals of Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, as well as their sponsor, theocratic Iran.

Instead of a trade war, increased tariff revenue and fair trade agreements were signed.

The border was closed shut.

Military recruitment rebounded to near record levels.

NATO was strengthened, and the intractable Ukraine war may end in a ceasefire.

Compared to the prior moribund Biden economy, Trump’s has set new precedents: record energy production and falling gas prices; inflation now below the three percent he inherited; and third-quarter GDP growth at a remarkable 4.3%.

But more importantly, 2026 may see even stronger economic growth, given a historical $10 trillion in foreign investment, tax cuts, deregulation, ever-greater energy production, huge investment in new technologies like AI and nuclear fusion, and dozens of favorable trade deals.

Yet, the left, like the Clinton campaign of old, is talking nonstop bout “affordability”—both ignoring the Democrats’ own dismal 2021-2025 economic record and claiming Trump, like Bush, cares more about those overseas than at home.

Whether the pseudo-recession of 2025-2026 works as well as the fake 1992 recession now hinges on whether the Trump campaign learns from the past and from now on fixates on the economy.
