A triumphant Trump cements his second term agenda into law as the nation celebrates its independence.
President Donald Trump on Friday signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law after a hard-fought battle to secure his second-term agenda, celebrating the sweeping legislation that delivers his campaign promises to voters during a festive Independence Day event at the White House.
“We made promises, and it’s really promises made, promises kept, and we’ve kept them,” Trump said from a White House balcony after military jets kicked off the July 4 celebration with a flyover. “This is a triumph of democracy on the birthday of democracy. And I have to say, the people are happy.”
The signing was held at the White House amid planned Independence Day festivities in the capital, marking 249 years since the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. The president signed the bill after delivering remarks on the South lawn of the White House, where lawmakers, service members and their families were gathered for a picnic celebrating the U.S. armed forces.
In his remarks, the president specifically praised the bravery and prowess of the pilots that participated in Operation Midnight Hammer, the U.S. strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, last month. Several of the warplanes that participated in the operation conducted flyovers in the nation's capital to sync up with the president's remarks.
Both chambers of Congress passed the Trump agenda mega-bill this week using the reconciliation process, ahead of their July 4 deadline, a significant achievement for leaders in both houses and for the president.
The bill, described as “groundbreaking” by its proponents, will significantly shape federal policy for years to come, including on taxes, federal entitlement programs, and immigration enforcement, delivering many of President Trump’s key priorities, Just the News reported.
"There could be no better birthday present for America than the phenomenal victory we achieved just hours ago when Congress passed the one big, beautiful bill to Make America Great Again," Trump said during a speech in Iowa on Thursday. "With this bill, every major promise I made to the people of Iowa in 2024 became a promise kept.”
The legislation shakes up the tax system, preserving Trump’s signature 2017 tax cuts, while also eliminating federal taxes on tips and overtime pay, doubling the child tax credit, boosting the standard deduction for families, expanding federal education savings and health savings accounts, and making the paid leave tax credit permanent.
The bill also significantly increases funding for Border Patrol to facilitate deportation and enforcement policies. It also includes funding for building a wall along the Mexican border, a signature, unfinished issue from the president’s first term.
The legislation also reforms SNAP and Medicaid by adding work requirements and prohibiting funding to illegal immigrants in an effort to cut costs and ensure the entitlements are used by those it was intended for, including disabled Americans, low-income earners and pregnant women.
