A Therapeutic Middle East vs. A Tragic One - Victor Davis Hanson

by Victor Davis Hanson

The tragedy is that realist deterrence is moral, while naïve appeasement is immoral.

Classical diplomacy warns leaders to be neither obsequious and appeasing abroad, nor gratuitously boastful and hard-headed.

The usual advice is don’t-tread-on-me resoluteness, or what Teddy Roosevelt characterized as “speak softly and carry a big stick.” The alternatives – whether “speak loudly and carry a twig,” “speak softly and carry a twig,” or “speak loudly and carry a big stick”- are far worse.

Our current diplomats have unfortunately forgotten that golden mean of guarded language backed with credible warnings of overwhelming force. And the result is a verbal mess, backed by impending attacks called off, confusion, and harsh rhetoric rather than quiet retribution.

Biden and his team give us endless variations on the same loud threat to Iran along the following lines: “If outside actors are considering widening the war, DON’T!” They accompany this by reacting only four times to 83 documented acts of Iranian aggression directed at U.S. forces, by greenlighting a $6 billion ransom to Iran and by lifting sanctions, resulting in a $50 billion Iranian oil windfall.

As a general rule, the more one side appeases the other, or is humiliated, or is shown to be weak or naïve, the more likely it is that the tentative party will vainly seek to restore lost deterrence by ever-tougher language—even though it must know that these ever-increasing verbal threats are becoming increasingly empty. Threats and taunts are like inflation: the more they are issued without reliable backing, the more worthless they become.

The murdered dead were not even buried in Israel, when the Biden State Department’s Palestinian Affairs bureau issued a call for a ceasefire—a plea followed by a similar one in a joint communiqué from Turkey’s Recep Erdogan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Did such calls win either empathy from Hamas or prompt agreement from Israel to transcend any idea of meting out justice to the killers of more than 1,000 of their own? Or were they simply revelations of cluelessness along with an empty signal of “concern?”

Did Secretary Blinken’s invitation to American regional embassies to lower their flags to half-mast to commemorate civilian causalities in Gaza—unfortunately timed to the false news reports of an IDF strike on a hospital—win respect or cool tensions?

In Blinken’s words, the gesture was intended “to observe national periods of mourning following an official proclamation by the host government with respect to the loss of innocent lives at the Al Ahli hospital blast on October 18.” Did that U.S. “concern” work? Did protests abroad wane? Was Biden never snubbed? Did U.S. host countries express loud thanks?

Which was the more likely reaction from Hamas to Blinken’s act of magnanimity?

  1. A) Hamas and other radical terrorist groups, as well the majority of the population in Gaza, appreciated Blinken’s gesture, even if – or rather perhaps because – Blinken probably knew the IDF did not hit a hospital, Palestinian groups knew that the IDF did not hit a hospital, and Palestinian groups knew that Blinken knew that the IDF did not hit a hospital—and knew that Blinken knew the Palestinians knew as well.

Nevertheless, they were thankful to the Americans’ hypersensitivity to their losses, especially when the U.S. was willing to canonize not just a lie, but a lie that was almost easily refuted in a matter of hours. Thus, they will likely moderate their attacks and pay more attention to American calls for “restarting” peace talks and “ending the cycle of violence.”

OR

  1. B) Hamas and other terrorist groups, more likely, drew a far different conclusion from such “outreach.” If, after the greatest single-day murder of Jews since the Holocaust, the United States was still so eager to restrain Israel from retaliating that it would traffic in Hamas’s implausible propaganda, then America must be truly hesitant, even timid.

AND/OR

  1. C) Hamas concluded that America must be desperate (for some unknown reason) to appease even the most bloodthirsty acts, and consequently will likely continue to defer to the sensibilities of radical Palestinians, regardless of whether they escalate their attacks on Israel—and therefore they will do just that.

Nowhere is the dichotomy between tragic and therapeutic diplomacy more on display than in the American efforts to delay, if not stymie, the long-expected Israeli ground invasion of Gaza to eradicate Hamas.

In a recent Foreign Affairs essay, the authors argue that prior to the current bloodletting, Hamas was increasingly unpopular among Gazans. But, they insist, Israeli bombing and proposed ground invasion will sadly have the unintended effect of gaining lost sympathy for a once-loathed Hamas among the people of Gaza, and therefore only intensify Israel’s problems and isolation. Maybe, maybe not.

But again, the tragic voice might counter this therapeutic call for restraint with a number of queries.

If Hamas has grown steadily-more unpopular since its 2007 “one man, one vote, once” popular victory, then has that disenchantment and cumulative anger in any material way stopped Hamas from siphoning off hundreds of billions of dollars in Middle Eastern, U.S., UN, and EU largess —or impeded Hamas in carrying out the attack of October 7?

Did the fact that numerous civilians followed Hamas fighters into Israel to loot, rape, and kill, while others reviled any Israeli hostage or Israeli corpse they spotted on the streets of Gaza, reflect widespread Hamas support, or not?

Are the masses in the United States who cheer on Hamas’s bloodwork and call for the destruction of Israel at odds with Hamas? Are they proof of Gazans worldwide who would seek peace with Israel, if not for Hamas? Remember – they hit the street before, not after, the Israeli air response.

Or were past negative polls more likely evidence that the popular criticism of Hamas was not that they are utterly corrupt, barbaric, and premodern, but that they are all that and more and yet still-impotent in the face of Israel?

Accordingly, isn’t Hamas now recapturing its former popularity, not by ceasing its own barbarity and corruption, but by focusing its animalistic cruelty far more successfully on killing Jews? If so, the way to undermine Hamas’s popularity is not to enshrine its killing by inaction, but to destroy it utterly and definitively demonstrate that, for all its cruelty and thievery, Hamas was cowardly, weak, and thus justifiably perished.

The various diplomatic arms of the Biden administration have repeatedly warned Israel not to go into Gaza on two grounds:

  1. The subsequent collateral damage done to the people and infrastructure of Gaza would be so great that it would incite the fury of Hezbollah or Iran to intervene with attacks on Israel’s northern fronts. Supposedly, Iran and its appendages would surely attack out of either genuine pan-Islamic solidarity or worry that, without intercession, it would lose all the credibility that it has gained on the Muslim street with its enormous arms shipments to Hezbollah and Hamas.
  2. Israel would lose all global support as it plays the role of the crazed bully battering a helpless population for the sins of a clique that had hijacked its government.

Yet there is a tragic retort to these common therapeutic scenarios.

The more severely Israel deals with Hamas, and the more the world sees that Hamas’s massive infusions of international aid were almost all misappropriated for tunnels and rockets—soon to be rendered into rubble—the less Hezbollah will want a similar scenario in Beirut. And, therefore, the less likely it will be to intervene.

As for Iran, if Hamas is crushed, would it wish the same fate for its greater investment in Hezbollah? Would Iran like to say to the world, “Hezbollah and Beirut are in rubble, but their rocket barrages against the Jews topped even the late, great Hamas’s body count?” Without Hezbollah and Hamas buffers, will Iran be safer, or more exposed?

As for global opinion, it is now anti-Israel as never before, as the stronger power is currently shown to be the weaker. And so the anti-Israeli world concludes that there are no great consequences to its anti-Semitism, especially if Israel takes such a savage blow and does not respond. Is that not sad proof, in an abjectly amoral world, that Israel deserved the blow? If it did not deserve the blow, why did it not respond to kill the killers?

In contrast, if Israel crushes Hamas, the world will not like Israel, but it will caution prudence to anti-Semitic killers, lest they incite a righteous Israeli retribution. And they may well secretly hope that Israel deals with the murderers who deserve their fate. The more Israel hesitates, the more the EU crowd and the “moderate” Arab regimes will damn Israel: “Doesn’t Jerusalem’s hesitation reveal its guilt or fear?”

But the more it blasts Hamas into oblivion, the more the opportunists will privately shrug: “Well, that’s that – good riddance. We warned the killers not to provoke Israel, so what did the late great Hamas expect anyway?”

There are two caveats, of course. First: the worst thing that Israel could do is inflicting enough damage on Gaza to incite global empathy, but not enough to destroy Hamas – an act that would justify the rubble videos on CNN and the BBC. And, second, it must continue to regret its need to bomb Hamas into smithereens, given the unavoidable collateral damage. The quieter and less triumphalist it becomes, the more the damage it does to Hamas will resonate.

Israelis are not haughty Athenians dialoguing with an innocent, Melian Hamas and its supporters on realism and human nature. Rather, they are the ones who were attacked and who now must make reluctantly clear to the attackers that they did not ask for and do not particularly enjoy the messy work of destroying them.

So we are back to square one: only speaking seldom and quietly, with the readiness to use force when necessary, achieves deterrence—and with deterrence at last comes peace.

The tragedy is that realist deterrence is moral, while naïve appeasement is immoral. Yet the former is unpopular and falsely dubbed cruel as it saves lives, while the latter is praised as humane as it dooms them.

Iran's Genocidal War Against the Jews - Majid Rafizadeh

by Majid Rafizadeh

Biden Must Enforce Sanctions Now

  • Iran has not only been threatening the US with attacks, it has attacked US assets in Syria and Iraq 83 times since Biden became president, and at least 24 times in the past two weeks. Iran also recently threatened again to annihilate Israel, and has reportedly begun ordering its elite militias based in Syria into southern Lebanon "to participate in attacks on Israel."

  • Worse, Biden is reportedly again trying to meddle again in the government of a sovereign democracy by strongly intimating that he wants Israel's duly elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gone. The reason, presumably, is so that Biden can install some weakling who will do whatever Biden and his newly minted, extremely pro-Iran ambassador to Israel, Jack Lew, tell him. That doubtless includes approving some horrendous "nuclear deal" enabling Iran's to have as many nuclear weapons as the mullahs like after Biden leaves office...

  • By effectively crippling America's oil production his first day in office and enabling Russia to sell its oil at inflated prices, Biden has literally financed Russia's war with up to $1 billion a day. In addition, by cancelling sanctions on Iran, Biden financed Iran's proxy war against Israel. The Biden administration, then, has funded both sides of two wars in two years.

The Biden administration has apparently decided to totally ignore the involvement of Iran in Hamas's October 7 invasion of Israel. The Iranian regime, meanwhile, has been assisting Russia militarily in its war against Ukraine and is reportedly behind the latest Hamas terrorist massacre in Israel. The Biden administration, by ignoring sanctions against Iran's oil and gas exports, thereby enabling Iran to accumulate close to $60 billion with which to fund the Hamas war, as well as to advance its own nuclear weapons program.

Iran has not only been threatening the US with attacks, it has attacked US assets in Syria and Iraq 83 times since Biden became president, and at least 24 times in the past two weeks. Iran also recently threatened again to annihilate Israel, and has reportedly begun ordering its elite militias based in Syria into southern Lebanon "to participate in attacks on Israel."

Worse, Biden is reportedly again trying to meddle again in the government of a sovereign democracy by strongly intimating that he wants Israel's duly elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gone. The reason, presumably, is so that Biden can install some weakling who will do whatever Biden and his newly minted, extremely pro-Iran ambassador to Israel, Jack Lew, tell him. That doubtless includes approving some horrendous "nuclear deal" enabling Iran's to have as many nuclear weapons as the mullahs like after Biden leaves office, as well as preventing Israel from winning the war that the terrorist group Hamas started, the same way he is preventing Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky from winning the war that Russia started.

By effectively crippling America's oil production his first day in office and enabling Russia to sell its oil at inflated prices, Biden has literally financed Russia's war with up to $1 billion a day. In addition, by cancelling sanctions on Iran, Biden financed Iran's proxy war against Israel. The Biden administration, then, has funded both sides of two wars in two years.

To top everything off, Biden is calling – in the middle of a genocidal Palestinian war to annihilate the Jews – for a "Palestinian state." Perhaps he imagines that would burnish his image as having "done something." As a news analyst said, "That is not a 'two-state solution;' that is a 'final solution.'"

On April 21, 2018, the Commander of Iran's Army, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, warned:

"When the arrogant powers create a sanctuary for the Zionist regime to continue survival, we shouldn't allow one day to be added to the ominous and illegitimate life of this regime. The Army will move hand in hand with the IRGC so that the arrogant system will collapse and the Zionist regime will be annihilated."

A few hours later, Hassan Nasrallah, chief Iran's Lebanese proxy Hizballah, said:

"The forces of the resistance today have the ability, the power and the missiles to hit any target in Israel."

The Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Salami, has made the strategy of his regime vehemently clear by stating on Iran state TV Channel 2, in 2019:

"Our strategy is to erase Israel from the global political map. And it seems that, considering the evil that Israel is doing, it is bringing itself closer to that."

Salami also bragged:

"Today, more than ever, there is fertile ground... for the annihilation... of the Zionist regime. In Lebanon alone, over 100,000 missiles are ready to be launched. If there is a will... these missiles will pierce through space, and will strike at the heart of the Zionist regime. They will prepare the ground for its great collapse in the new era".

The Iranian regime has set up weapons factories abroad for manufacturing advanced ballistic missiles and arm in foreign nations, including Syria. Some of the weapons Tehran is producing there include precision-guided missiles, using advanced technology to strike specific targets. Iran's uses its foreign weapons factories and proxy armies, such as Hamas, Hizballah, and the Houthis in Yemen, for "plausible deniability." Both of these methods of "outsourcing" its aggression give it an advantageous military capability for waging wars or striking other nations through third countries such as Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq.

Israel has "targeted 15 Iran-linked facilities... the fourth reported attack by Israel against Iranian targets in Syria in the past two and a half weeks." Last week, Yemen's Houthis, whom Secretary of State Antony Blinken removed from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations just weeks into Biden's term, fired missiles at Israel from Yemen.

As the Biden administration has not been enforcing sanctions and tried to hand the Iranian regime $6 billion more, Iran has been enjoying a windfall of revenues. In April 2023, a bipartisan group of 12 US Senators urged the Biden administration to enforce Iranian oil sanctions, writing:

"United States sanctions should be enforced to the fullest extent of the law. As Iranian oil sales continue to rise, and the IRGC continues to target U.S. citizens and service members, including inside the U.S., it is imperative that we use all available government assets to limit the activities of the Iranian regime."

US sanctions have not been hurting Iran's economy since the Biden administration assumed office. Iran is now producing more oil and selling it at levels higher to the pre-sanctions era to countries such as China. As Iran's hardline President Ebrahim Raisi boasted, "We are not worried about oil sales."

Tehran's major revenues come from exporting oil. The sale of oil accounts for nearly 60% of the government's total revenues and more than 80% of its export revenues. Several Iranian leaders have, in fact, hinted at Iran's major dependence on oil exports. "Although we have some other incomes, the only revenue that can keep the country going is the oil money," then President Hassan Rouhani acknowledged in 2019.

The White House is not taking any action.

The Biden administration must immediately impose drastic economic sanctions on Iran's energy and financial sectors. Such sanctions, as they did before, would threaten the ruling clerics' hold on power and to proceed with their nuclear program, forcing the leadership to recalculate its priorities. The US needs for once to hold those who violate commitments worldwide strictly accountable, and make clear that if they continue advancing their hostilities – with Iran, its nuclear weapons program -- military options are on the table.

Fatah calls for terror in the West Bank – “Call out Allahu Akbar from the rooftops” - Nan Jacques Zilberdik

by Nan Jacques Zilberdik

“We are united and aiming our bullets at the occupier and at the settlers”

Abbas’ Fatah:

  • “Call out Allahu Akbar from the rooftopsCall out Allahu Akbar from your mosques – Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar
This is a call of mobilization to all those who have a weapon”

Palestinian West Bank youth:

  •  “Call out – Allahu Akbar”

            “Allahu Akbar!” …

“O mother of the Martyr, lucky are you…”

Fatah official:

  • “We are united and aiming our bullets at the occupier and at the settlers”

PA Chairman Abbas’ Fatah Movement doesn’t want to play second fiddle to Hamas and has been calling for terror and murdering Jews since Hamas launched its terror war on Israel with the massacre on Oct. 7. Palestinian Media Watch reported yesterday that Fatah also bragged of its own participation in the atrocities, gloating that it helped Hamas.

And Fatah continues to call for terror. Mentioning the names of Palestinian terrorist murderers and terror leaders – and their “spirit of heroism” – Fatah urges everyone who owns a weapon to join the war against Israel. The allegedly secular movement appealed to Palestinians’ religious sentiment as well, packaging its call for terror in praise for Allah – “Call out Allahu Akbar from the rooftops… Call out Allahu Akbar from your mosques”:

Posted text: “We will not abandon anyone

O sons of the West Bank, O people of [former PA President] Yasser [Arafat], [Ahmed] Yassin (i.e., Hamas founder), and Abu Ali [Mustafa] (i.e., former Secretary-General of the PFLP), has the spirit of heroism within us died? … Where are the sons of [Raed] Al-Karmi (i.e., terrorist, responsible for murder of 9), the sons of [Ahmed] Yassin and [Fathi] Shaqaqi (i.e., Islamic Jihad founder), where are the eagles of the [Popular] Front [for the Liberation of Palestine], and where are we in relation to the Gaza Strip

The Zionist occupation is continuing its massacres and annihilating our people, and we are still harvesting our Martyrs…

Call out Allahu Akbar (i.e., “Allah is greatest”) from the rooftops, and this is the minimum action.

Call out Allahu Akbar from your mosques – Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar

This is a call of mobilization to all those who have a weapon

Shame and disgrace on everyone who abandons [the struggle]”

[Fatah Movement – Bethlehem Branch, Telegram channel, Oct. 23, 2023; Tulkarem Brigade, Telegram channel, Oct. 23, 2023]

In fact, Palestinian youth in the West Bank have already heeded this call and taken to the streets to show their support for Hamas and the religious terror war against Israel, chanting “Allahu Akbar” – “Allah is greatest”:

Protesters in Jenin and Nablus:

Leader of chant: “Call out – Allahu Akbar (i.e., “Allah is greatest”)”

Crowd: “Allahu Akbar!”

[“The Palestinian Center for Information” (Hamas),
Twitter account, Oct. 29, 2023]

Protesters in Beita:

“Allahu Akbar …

O you who carry a rifle, if only you were prepared”

[Shehab news agency (Hamas), Twitter account, Oct. 29, 2023]

Protesters in Qarawat:

“O mother of the Martyr, lucky are you,

If only my mother were in your place

Leave the Martyr in his blood [during burial],

And 1,000 blessings to his mother…

The people of the weapons will take care of him…

The Al-Aqsa Mosque gate, from here –

Only the Martyr will open it…”

[Quds New Network, Twitter account, Oct. 29, 2023]

"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar”

[Shehab news agency (Hamas), Twitter account, Oct. 29, 2023]

Palestinian Media Watch exposed a similar chant that was led by a teacher in the West Bank who taught young schoolgirls that “Jihad is our path,” and that the goal is to “blow up the Zionist’s head.”

Protesters in Tubas:

Chant leader: “O Muslim, call out ‘Allahu Akbar’”
Crowd: “O Muslim, call out ‘Allahu Akbar’”
Chant leader: “Blow up the Zionist’s head!”
Crowd: “Blow up the Zionist’s head!”

Fatah’s Nablus Branch Secretary Muhammad Hamdan has also stressed Fatah’s joint mission with Hamas and its willingness to attack Israelis:

Fatah Nablus Branch Secretary Muhammad Hamdan: “We as the Palestinian people are united in all the arenas of confrontation. We are united and aiming our bullets at the occupier and at the settlers.”

[Fatah Movement – Nablus Branch, Facebook page, Oct. 21, 2023]

Fatah urges Palestinians to “teach Israel a lesson” everywhere:

Posted text: “A short statement issued by the Fatah Movement’s northern districts (i.e., the West Bank):… We see an obligation to emphasize and integrate our statement with struggle and national activity in all the fields of confrontation in order to deter the aggression by teaching the occupation a lesson in all the arenas of confrontation.

[Fatah Commission of Information and Culture, Facebook page, Oct. 28, 2023,
and Fatah Movement – Tulkarem Branch, Facebook page, Oct. 28, 2023]

Fatah Spokesman Abd Al-Fattah Doleh seconded this, calling for “investment in our people’s struggle and its resistance”- i.e., terror – to create “a true deterring factor against the forces of evil and colonialism.” In other words, he called to fight Israel, the US, and other perceived “colonialist powers”:

“Fatah Spokesman Abd Al-Fattah Doleh (i.e., terrorist, involved in murder of 1) said: ‘We call on our brothers in Hamas to assemble a pure Palestinian front under the umbrella of the PLO, the sole legal representative of our Palestinian people, which will take action alongside those who are devoted to our people’s struggle and its right to freedom, a state, and self-determination, in order to invest in our people’s struggle and its resistance (i.e., terror) to the criminal aggression to which we are being subjected, for the sake of our people and the future of our existence and our cause in a way that will constitute a true deterring factor against the forces of evil and colonialism (i.e., Israel, US and European “colonialist powers”).’”

[Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, Oct. 30, 2023]

The following is a longer excerpt of one of the statements cited above, posted texts with the videos of youth marching, and information on the terrorist murderers and terror leaders glorified by Fatah:

“The Fatah Movement condemned the statements of Hamas Movement Political Bureau member Musa Abu Marzouq in an interview with Al-Jazeera TV, in which he accused the PA and a number of Arab states of demanding that the West eliminate Hamas.

Fatah Spokesman Abd Al-Fattah Doleh (i.e., terrorist, involved in murder of 1) said that Musa Abu Marzouq’s statements in the shadow of the bloody genocide that our people is dealing with (refers to Israel’s response to Hamas’ terror war; see note below -Ed.) harms the blood of the Martyrs and the resistance members (i.e., terrorists) on the ground and the struggles and sacrifices of our people that is facing the [Israeli] aggression.

He added: ‘We condemn Abu Marzouq’s statements in this bloody period in particular, which are inconsistent with the unity that is prevailing in the Palestinian territories. Abu Marzouq is speaking from the ivory tower. If he were alongside the fighters of his [Hamas] Movement who are waging and leading a heroic epic in the Gaza Strip or in the West Bank that is carrying out intifada against the occupier, he would not have used this language.’ …

He said: ‘We call on our brothers in Hamas to assemble a pure Palestinian front under the umbrella of the PLO, the sole legal representative of our Palestinian people, which will take action alongside those who are devoted to our people’s struggle and its right to freedom, a state, and self-determination, in order to invest in our people’s struggle and its resistance (i.e., terror) to the criminal aggression to which we are being subjected, for the sake of our people and the future of our existence and our cause in a way that will constitute a true deterring factor against the forces of evil and colonialism (i.e., Israel, US and European “colonialist powers”).’”

[Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, Oct. 30, 2023]

Abd Al-Fattah Doleh – Palestinian terrorist and member of the Tanzim (Fatah terror faction). He participated in the kidnapping and murder of 16-year-old Ofir Rahum on Jan. 17, 2001. Amna Muna (a female accomplice) met Rahum in an Internet chat room and engaged him in an online romance that culminated in his agreeing to meet her. She drove him to Ramallah, where they were met by Doleh and another accomplice, Hassan Alkadi, who shot and killed Rahum. Doleh served 12 years in prison and was released on June 30, 2016. After being released, Doleh was appointed as a PLO Commission of Prisoners' Affairs executive committee member and Fatah Commission of Mobilization and Organization spokesman.

Yasser Arafat – Founder of Fatah and former chairman of the PLO and PA. During the 1960s, 70s and 80s Arafat was behind numerous terror attacks against Israelis. Although he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 together with then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and then Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Shimon Peres “for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East" after signing the Oslo Accords peace agreement, Arafat launched a 5-year terror campaign - the second Intifada (2000-2005) – in which more than 1,000 Israelis were murdered. Arafat died of an illness in 2004.

Ahmed Yassin - Founder and former head of the terrorist organization Hamas. The Hamas movement is responsible for numerous terror attacks and the deaths of hundreds of Israeli civilians.

Abu Ali Mustafa - Secretary-General of the terror organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). The PFLP, which rejected the Oslo Accords (1993), has planned and carried out numerous terror attacks against Israeli civilians since its founding in 1967 and throughout the Palestinian terror campaign between 2000-2005 (the Intifada).

Raed Al-Karmi – Palestinian terrorist and senior Tanzim (Fatah terror faction) member responsible for the murder of 9 Israelis in several attacks: Etgar Zeituni and Motti Dayan on Jan. 23, 2001; Zvi Shelef on May 31, 2001; Danny Yehuda on June 18, 2001; Elie Na’aman on July 4, 2001; Dov Roseman on Aug. 26, 2001; soldier Yaniv Levy on Aug. 28, 2001; Israeli army officer Erez Merhavi on Sept. 6, 2001; and Hananya Ben Avraham on Oct. 5, 2001. Al-Karmi was killed by the Israeli army on Jan. 14, 2002.

Fathi Shaqaqi - Founder of the terror organization Islamic Jihad, which has carried out more than 1,000 terror attacks, murdering and wounding hundreds of Israeli civilians. Shaqaqi was killed in 1995 in an operation attributed to Israel but for which Israel never took responsibility.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) - a socialist Palestinian terror organization and one of the largest factions in the PLO. Founded by George Habash in 1967, PFLP has planned and carried out numerous terror attacks against Israeli civilians since its founding and throughout the PA terror campaign (the second Intifada, 2000-2005). One of its most high profile attacks was the murder of Israeli Minister of Tourism Rehavam Ze'evi on Oct. 17, 2001. PFLP has been designated as a terror organization by several states including the US, Japan, Canada, Australia, and the EU.Terrorist prisoner Ahmad Sa’adat has served as PFLP’s secretary-general since 2001; he is serving a 30-year sentence in an Israeli prison for heading the PFLP.

Hamas war on Israel October 2023 - At least 1,400 Israelis, including over 1,000 civilians, were murdered and over 4,800 wounded, in addition to at least 247 Israelis who were abducted into the Gaza Strip, in a Hamas terror war that began when approximately 2,500 Hamas terrorists broke through Israel's security fence at the Gaza Strip border and launched a surprise attack, taking control of several Israeli towns and attacking a music festival on the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, which fell on the Sabbath, Oct. 7, 2023. During the massacre the terrorists tortured, raped, shot, beheaded, and burned their victims alive, murdering entire families and leaving at least 21 children without parents. Hamas terrorists also fired at least 5,000 rockets at Israeli population centers. In response, Israel launched Operation Iron Swords to counter the Hamas terror threat. Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon joined Hamas' terror war starting from the following day, attacking Israel from the north. Occasional rocket launches and shootings continued from Lebanon throughout the war.

Report: Assad agreed to send Russian missile system to Hezbollah - Israel National News

by Israel National News

Two sources tell CNN the US has intelligence that Syrian President has agreed to provide Hezbollah with a Russian-made missile defense system.

Bashar Al-Assad

The US has intelligence that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has agreed to provide the Hezbollah terrorist organization with a Russian-made missile defense system, CNN reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the intelligence.

According to the report, Russian mercenary organization Wagner Group, which operates in Syria, has been tasked with carrying out the delivery of the surface-to-air SA-22 missile system.

It is not clear whether it has already been delivered or how close it is to delivery. The system was originally provided by Russia for use by the Syrian government, the sources said.

One of the sources said the US has been monitoring recent movement of the system, which is also known as a Pantsir. The other source said the US assessment was based partly on intelligence obtained about discussions among Assad, Wagner, and Hezbollah about the delivery of the system.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Thursday that Wagner may provide the system to Hezbollah. Assad’s role has not been previously reported.

Wagner and Hezbollah fighters have both operated in Syria for years, where they have been working alongside Russian and Syrian armed forces to bolster the Assad regime against the Syrian opposition.

The possibility that Hezbollah could soon have a new air defense system comes amid concerns that it is considering opening a new front in Israel’s war on Hamas, on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.

It is not clear how much influence Russia had over the decision to provide the system to Hezbollah, according to CNN. Since the death of Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in August, the Kremlin has made some attempts to absorb Wagner mercenaries and the group’s assets. But as of late September, the US had not seen a decisive shift in terms of the Kremlin taking full ownership over the fighters, CNN previously reported.

Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, is scheduled to give a major speech on Friday that intelligence officials will be watching closely for signals about the group’s intentions, one official said.

Hezbollah arrests reveal threat in the U.S., FBI's Wray says this "is a time for vigilance" - Steven Richards

by Steven Richards

Case details of Hezbollah operatives previously arrested in the United States show the reach of the terrorist organization and reveal threats lurking within our own borders during heightened security threats surrounding the Israel-Hamas war. FBI Director Wray told the Senate Homeland Security Committee: "This is not a time for panic, but it is a time for vigilance.”

In 2017, two Hezbollah-linked individuals were arrested simultaneously in different parts of the United States. Ali Kourani of Bronx, New York and Samer El Debek of Dearborn, Michigan were charged for terrorist activities on behalf of the Islamic Jihad Organization (IJO), a component of Hezbollah, after obtaining U.S. citizenship.

The criminal complaints filed by the Department of Justice detail wide-ranging activities by Kourani and El Debek, including surveillance of potential targets for attacks in the United States and Central America and training by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

These were only two of the 128 Hezbollah-linked individuals operating in the United States from 1997 to 2020 which researchers affiliated with The George Washington University, West Point, and the Department of Homeland Security identified in a 2022 report.

Israel and Hamas are now at war halfway across the globe, but the same terrorists that threaten Israel have been building networks in our hemisphere for years, and are likely to pose an increased threat to the United States, especially as tensions escalate between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

Yesterday, the leader of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, gave public remarks on the unfolding conflict where he praised Hamas' attack but avoided committing his group to the wider conflict. Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in low-intensity operations on the Lebanese border after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel since the start of its war with Hamas. Israel launched fresh airstrikes today.

The court documents from three Hezbollah-affiliated individuals arrested since 2017 reveal the danger that is lurking inside the United States’ own borders, made even more pressing by increasing encounters of terror watch list suspects at the southern border.

This concern is particularly acute now, according to Kevin Brock, former FBI Assistant Director for Intelligence who helped establish the Intelligence Directorate at the agency following the September 11th attacks, who argues that a terror suspects crossing our border could encourage groups like Hezbollah to conduct a similar attack on the United States as Hamas carried out on Israel.

“And the concern that I had after listening to President Biden's speech last week was that we're focused on the Middle East on the Ukraine. And we know now that there has been a intentional surge of military aged young males from countries that are either state sponsors of terrorism, or up to 170 of them who are on the terror watch list,” Brock said on the "Just the News, No Noise" television show last week.

“When we have that kind of vulnerability, then the attack on, from Gaza, on 10/7, becomes even more jarring. It was a kind of a new strategy where masses of young men came in well armed and just started shooting up civilian populations. Could that happen here?” he asked. “Well, in light of the information that we have the sudden surge of, of individuals coming from hostile nations, I think we have to be wary about that.”

Federal prosecutors have publicly charged at least three individuals linked to Hezbollah in the last six years. These cases shed light on the danger that terror groups pose in the United States.

Ali Kourani of New York, Samer El Debek of Dearborn, Michigan, and Alexei Saab of New Jersey were three terrorist operatives arrested since 2017 and charged with surveilling locations in the United States for and providing material support to Hezbollah’s Islamic Jihad Organization (IJO).

In 2017, Kourani was charged with providing material support to Hezbollah through his work with IJO.

Kourani was born in Lebanon in 1984 and eventually entered the United States legally in 2003 to pursue an education. The federal investigation found that Kourani was trained by Hezbollah at a camp in Lebanon before he entered the United States.

Once in the United States, Kourani was recruited by the Islamic Jihad Organization and applied for U.S. citizenship to facilitate his work for the terror group. Among other things, he was found to have surveilled military and law enforcement facilities in New York City, searched for weapons suppliers in the U.S., and worked to identify individuals affiliated with the Israeli Defense Forces.

Right after securing U.S. citizenship, Kourani was also recorded visiting China to secure a source of ammonium nitrate, a compound that can be used to manufacture explosives.

You can read the federal complaint filed against Kourani below:

Kourani was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his activities aiding Hezbollah’s Islamic Jihad Organization.

Samer El Debek was arrested concurrently with Kourani in the summer of 2017 and charged with similar offenses. Beginning in 2008, El Debek received extensive training from Hezbollah and the Islamic Jihad Organization including in bomb-making, weapons, and military tactics, according to the court documents.

Like Kourani, El Debek surveilled potential targets for Hezbollah. Unlike Kourani, his targets were outside the United States—particularly focused on the vital Panama Canal and the U.S. embassy abroad.

In 2011, El Debek took his first trip to Panama via Colombia and was tasked with locating both the U.S. and Israeli embassies in country and figuring out how to access the Panama Canal. Specifically, he was tasked with casing and identifying the security procedures at both the canal and the Israeli embassy. While in Panama, El Debek also sourced “explosive precursors”—or materials that can be used to build explosive devices.

El Debek took a second trip to Panama in 2012 to further assess weaknesses and security at the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal is a vital waterway to the United States and the West more broadly. In 2023, about 40% of U.S. container traffic transited the canal, about $270 billion in cargo annually, according to CNBC.

On that trip, IJO-Hezbollah directed El Debek to further assess the U.S. embassy, including its security procedures and periods of heavy traffic in an effort to plan for potential future attacks.

You can read the complaint against El Debek below:

Unlike Kourani, El Debek has not been sentenced on the terrorism charges. The indictment of Alexei Saab, another Hezbollah operative in the United States, indicates that El Debek is likely cooperating with U.S. authorities in their investigation of the terror group.

Securing El Debek’s cooperation may have something to do with his detention by Hezbollah for a short period from Dec. 2015 to April 2016. The organization accused him of being a spy for the United States, according to the court document. El Debek told federal investigators that he made a false confession to Hezbollah, saying he worked for the United States. This may have played a role in the United States securing his cooperation on future Hezbollah cases.

Alexei Saab was arrested in 2019 for the same kinds of activities as Kourani and El Debek. By now, the process should be familiar. Saab was a Lebanese citizen who obtained American citizenship after being recruited by Hezbollah. He attended a Hezbollah training before entering the United States legally and was training in surveillance tactics and explosive construction.

Saab wrote a report on New York City targets for Hezbollah that included federal buildings, the United Nations headquarters, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and the local airports, bridges and tunnels. In addition to New York City, he also surveilled sites in Washington, D.C., Boston, and Istanbul, Turkey. He was convicted in May of this year and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

You can read the criminal complaint against Saab’s below:

The U.S. university and government researchers who identified 128 Hezbollah-linked individuals charged by federal prosecutors wrote that Hezbollah operatives cooperate in “small, centralized hubs” and engage in criminal activity with “wider criminal enterprises.” They conclude that these Hezbollah networks are made up of a core group of prominent individuals with direct links to the organization, like Kourani and El Debek, and those around them with only tangential links to the organization, but who are willing to participate in criminal enterprises to advance the network’s goals.

The most prominent actions by these networks is to exploit the U.S. financial system for profits which can then be funneled back to Hezbollah through the central individuals. Only 13% of the individuals identified by the researchers conducted “operational support” for Hezbollah, which includes human smuggling, weapons procurement, and surveillance of potential targets. The three Hezbollah operatives above were the only individuals to be charged with what the researchers described as “pre-operational surveillance.”

Hezbollah’s roots also run deep throughout the countries south of the United States at a time when encounters of individuals on the terror watch list at the southern border have reached a record high. Recently, the San Diego Field Office of Customs and Border Patrol put out a warning to staff about potential encounters with individuals affiliated with Jihadist groups, including Hezbollah.

Hezbollah’s criminal networks have a close relationship with Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian regime in Venezuela and have facilitated the Venezuela-Iran relationship. In the past, Hezbollah has conducted attacks against Israeli targets in Latin America, for example, a 1992 attack against the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The following year, Hezbollah struck a Jewish cultural center, killing at 85 people.

Hezbollah’s networks in Latin American remain intact, according to Dr. Emanuele Ottolenghi, an expert in Hezbollah and Iranian operations, with a special expertise in their operations in Latin America.

Recently, the U.S. officials are issuing increasingly urgent warnings that the U.S. is vulnerable to a terrorist attack. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before Congress on Tuesday about the heightened terror threat amid the Israel-Hamas war and border crisis.

"What has now increased is the greater possibility of one of these foreign terrorist organizations directing an attack in the United States," Wray told the Senate Homeland Security Committee. "This is not a time for panic, but it is a time for vigilance.”

The FBI did not respond directly to questions from Just the News on the specific threat that Hezbollah poses in the country, but pointed to a press release from last month and Director Wray’s statement before the Senate Committee.

“During the Israel-HAMAS conflict, the FBI is continuing to monitor threats both in the United States and overseas. As the conflict continues, the FBI has seen an increase in reports of threats against Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities and institutions. We take all potential threats seriously and are working closely with our law enforcement partners to determine their credibility, share information, and take appropriate investigative action. As always, we encourage members of the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement,” one press release by the agency read.

Director Wray highlighted Hezbollah’s efforts in the United States in his statement to the Senate committee.

“The arrests of individuals in the United States allegedly linked to Hezbollah’s main overseas terrorist arm, and their intelligence-collection and -procurement efforts, demonstrate Hezbollah’s interest in long-term contingency planning activities here in the Homeland,” he said.

A Department of Homeland Security official told Just the News that the department is working to prevent the entry of terrorists into the country. "DHS works with our international partners to share intelligence and other information, including to prevent individuals on the terrorist watchlist from entering the United States," the official said.

Despite recent reporting indicating an increase in terrorist watch list encounters at the border, the official said that "Encounters of known or suspected terrorists attempting to cross the Southern Border, or encounters of those associated with such individuals, are uncommon."

Why is the Left So into the Hamas Pogrom? - Alan Joseph Bauer

by Alan Joseph Bauer

Utopia's heart of darkness.

A significant part of western society shows unabated approval of the Hamas pogrom that left over 1,400 dead and three times as many injured. The question is why are they so enthusiastic about the wanton and barbaric killing of civilians.

I have seen over the past 10 days a few letters sent to the purported leadership of Harvard by various groups of alumni regarding the vocal pro-Hamas rallies and the lack of a serious university response. While I am sympathetic to the writers of these epistles, I honestly don’t understand their surprise as to what is taking place on campus, at other universities, and on the streets of major cities throughout the world. On virtually every subject—Israel (the Jews), trans, the environment, etc.—the left has staked out an extreme position that is not open to negotiation or even reality. Show that trans men have physical advantage over women, and the scientific evidence is ignored. Show that nonhuman sources like the oceans produce more carbon dioxide annually than mankind does, and one is tut-tutted into silence. The university has created these pro-Hamas monsters over 40 years of brainwashing on nearly every social issue, and their only goals at this moment are a) to make sure that no Jew is physically harmed as that could be bad press and a lawsuit, and b) not to contradict the student marchers as they are the product that they have created.

Abba Eben, as the longtime Israeli ambassador to the UN, famously said that the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. I might suggest that his idiom be updated to saying that the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to make a huge blunder. The Hamas terrorists and their partners from other terror groups and Gazan citizens recorded their monstrous actions in great detail through GoPro cameras, cellphones, and even social media on their phones of their victims—as they were killing them in real time. Their bloodlust was so intense that they wanted to record for posterity how they burned, raped, tortured, shot, hacked, and mutilated Israeli civilians and soldiers. Let’s imagine that they had somehow had the discipline not to record anything or leave behind their clearly printed instructions (lots of Israelis read Arabic) detailing how to kill, decapitate and capture Jews. In such a case, the only record would have come from Israeli security personnel and first-responders, and nobody would believe them—it was a Hollywood set they would claim because Israelis are always liars in their eyes. But the Arab murderers left the evidence and in their interrogations, they only add more details, such as they were told to do whatever they wanted with the Jews, as the attack was to be considered a suicide mission. Yesterday, we had a recording of a phone call from one of the barbarians to his parents—’hey mom, I killed 10 Jews with my own hands.’ Every day brings new and more grotesque details. The Israelis have brought in world experts to identify the bodies burned beyond recognition, of which there are about 200.

So there is a wealth of information on what happened on 10/7, much of it provided by the murderers and their bosses. The left cannot say that it was made up, however much it pathetically argued about decapitated babies and the reason for their heads missing. So the question then becomes why is the left so supportive of Hamas’ undeniably brutal actions? It would not have been very difficult for these university-trained people in college or on the streets to make some simple distinctions. They could have stated that they are in favor of Palestinian statehood but fully reject the violent and barbaric attack on Israeli citizens. But they have made no effort to do so. Why? How can students at Harvard and citizens of London, New York, Sydney and elsewhere march in support of people who by their very own admission and evidentiary support did things that even the Nazis would not have considered doing (necrophilia, for example)? A recent video shows Hamas terrorists taking a boy around his apartment building so that he would tell the residents to come out. They then shoot the ones who answer to his voice and open the door.

There was a story of a famous rabbi who was friends with a rich landowner in Russia. The latter said that he could train a cat to sit at a dining room table and eat like a gentleman, using the right utensils for each course. The two made a bet and met again three months later. And sure enough, here was the cat wearing a dinner jacket and sitting at the table, looking quite respectable. He took the right knife and fork on cue and seemed truly noble in his appearance and actions. The rabbi congratulated his friend and then quietly took a mouse out of his pocket and put it on the table in front of the cat. The cat pounced on the table and chased the mouse throughout the house. The rabbi smiled and said, “Once a cat, always a cat.”

The folks with the placards with “from the river to the sea” and other Palestinian bromides are antisemites, no different than their Nazi, Cossack or Crusader predecessors. Their line goes back through the ages but in its modern form, they channel their Jew hatred through some ginned up care about the Palestinians. With their plan for a Palestinian state where one has never existed, what do they have in mind for the Jews? They’ll simply go back to Europe, US, and Arab countries from which they came? They will be exterminated on site, like the warm-up act near Gaza? What about Jews outside of Israel? Are they safe? Will they also need some special treatment? They don’t like to talk about that part of their program.

The left, in distorting truth and buying into lies about supposed Israeli colonialism and the Palestinians once having their own country, has created monsters who threaten not only Israel but also the Jews of the West. One letter I received said that Jewish students at Harvard are staying locked in their rooms. The university, instead of dealing with the student cancer of its own creation, has offered a safe room for Jewish and Israeli students. I wonder if it comes with crayons and puppies, or if such safe spaces are only at Yale. I just want to reiterate that the Levant was under Ottoman control for centuries, until World War I, when it was divided between England and France. When the Arabs rejected the 1947 Partition Plan and the British left in 1948, Israel was born, with Gaza in Egyptian hands and the West Bank under Jordanian Control.  Israel took both in 1967. Again, there never was a “Palestine” run by ostensibly Palestinian Arabs. Period.

The Left’s antisemitism cannot be defeated by facts. Israel spends a fortune on “hasbara” which means explanation. When ears and brains are closed, all of the facts and statistics mean nothing. Just as Israel must destroy all of those who wish to destroy her, those who believe in truth and the importance of western values must give no quarter to the antisemites marching in support of the baby-killers. Don’t associate with them. Don’t hire them. Don’t do them any favors. These people want to wipe the Jewish people off the face of the Earth—like Hitler—and they couch it in terms of supporting Palestinians so as to fool themselves and others. Jew haters have been in every generation. There must be no tolerance for them. If Harvard and other universities wish to coddle them, employers have no obligation to do the same. If news channels want to equate Israel destroying Hamas with Hamas wiping out families, then one does not need to watch their programming. Boycotts brought Anheuser Busch to its knees. The antisemites among us deserve no less.

Biden’s Hamas Conundrum - Caroline Glick

by Caroline Glick

U.S. President Joe Biden has a problem. He staffed his administration at all levels and across departments with hardened ideologues, many of whom have records of hostility towards Jews and support for Hamas, Iran and other terror groups and regimes.

Since Oct. 7, American Jews have seen their civil rights trampled every day. Jewish students are subjected to constant intimidation, assault, battery and threats from Hamas supporters on campus. From coast to coast, the stories are depressingly similar. University authorities refuse to protect them from their pro-Jewish genocide peers.

Then, too, on Thursday, the New York Police Department told the Jews of Brooklyn to stay off the streets on Shabbat afternoon. Pro-Hamas will be demonstrating, and the police said that they will be unable to protect Jewish residents as the terror supporters march through their neighborhoods.

How is this happening? How is it that at a time of maximum peril, law-enforcement bodies are doing all but nothing to defend the Jewish community? Why is the FBI not arresting terror supporters as required under U.S. law? Why is the U.S. Justice Department not directing local authorities to defend the Jews?

A good place to begin to look for answers is the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. That powerful division is led by Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke.

Clarke’s appointment in 2021 caused an uproar in Jewish circles because she has a record of anti-Semitic activism and was an ardent supporter of the pro-Hamas, anti-Jewish Black Lives Matter movement.

In 1994, as the head of the Black Students Association at Harvard Law School, Clarke invited Wellesley College Professor Tony Martin to speak at Harvard. Martin had just written a Protocols of the Elders of Zion-style anti-Semitic book called The Jewish Onslaught.

Clarke defiantly defended Martin at the time and attacked the Jewish students who expressed concern about her move. She never apologized for her actions. Instead, ahead of her Senate confirmation, she told progressive, anti-Israel Jewish reporters and activists that she “regretted” the invitation. That was enough for them to declare that the allegation that Clarke remains hostile towards Jews is slander.

U.S. President Joe Biden has a problem. He staffed his administration at all levels and across departments with hardened ideologues, many of whom have records of hostility towards Jews and support for Hamas, Iran and other terror groups and regimes. Under Biden, these officials have advanced his Middle East policies that until Oct. 7 were largely aligned with the interests of Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.

Now that those policies have been shown to be counterproductive, and at least partly responsible for the threats America now faces to its core Middle Eastern interests, the same officials remain in their positions and continue to direct the Biden administration’s policies.

Consider the Palestinians.

U.S. policy towards the Palestinians is directed by the U.S. Special Representative to the Palestinians, Hady Amr. Amr is a longtime supporter of Hamas. In 2018, at the Qatar-based offices of the Brookings Institute, Amr was the lead author of a Brookings policy paper titled, “Ending Gaza’s Perpetual Crisis–A New U.S. Approach.”

Amr’s basic recommendations were to change terror financing laws to permit U.S. contractors to work with Hamas, as well as to use any new round of war between Israel and Hamas to launch a new three-pronged policy towards Israel and Hamas.

Amr’s plan accepted Hamas as a legitimate actor. It called for the Palestinian Authority to unite with Hamas and reorganize under Hamas’s leadership in light of Hamas’s stronger support among Palestinians. Finally, it called for the United States to coerce Israel into making unreciprocated concessions to Hamas and the P.A., even though Amr acknowledged that the concessions would endanger Israel. Among other things, he called for Israel to end its maritime blockage of the Gaza coast and permit Hamas free access to the sea.

As the architect of Biden’s Palestinian policies, Amr’s Brookings paper was a blueprint for many of the policies adopted by the administration, including its willingness to fund Hamas indirectly through the P.A. and U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), the U.N. agency operating in Gaza. Some 90% of UNRWA employees are Hamas members.

Amr remains in his position.

The ongoing Iran problem

Then there is Iran.

Biden appointed Iran apologist Robert Malley to lead the administration’s Iran policy. Malley’s policy was so pro-Iranian that several career U.S State Department officials, not known for their hostility to Tehran resigned in protest. As Semafor and Iran International exposed last month, Malley surrounded himself with advisers in and out of government with records of serving as Iranian regime agents in Washington. One of those aides, Ariane Tabatabai remains in her position as Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict, with her security clearance intact, a month after her direct ties to the Iranian regime became public knowledge.

Although Malley was booted from his position under a cloud of suspicion of misuse of classified information and is reportedly under FBI criminal investigation, his policy of courting Iran and enabling its rise as a nuclear power and regional power remains in place.

This week many observers, including former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed shock when they discovered the Biden administration gave a U.S. entry visa to Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to speak at the United Nations. The move signaled that despite the fact that Iran trained Hamas terrorists in Iran ahead of Oct. 7’s atrocities, oversaw the planning of the Oct. 7 slaughter, green-lighted the atrocities and finances Hamas, the administration is still implementing Malley’s Iran policy. And to repay the administration for its appeasement, Abdollahian used his speech to threaten the United States with war if it continues to support Israel. Since Oct, 7, and as the administration clings stubbornly to Malley’s pro-Iran policies, Iranian proxies in Syria, Yemen and Iraq have repeatedly attacked U.S. forces in the region.

The Pentagon’s continued refusal to fully acknowledge Iran’s direction of Hamas’s acts of genocide is further indication that Malley’s policy remains Biden’s Iran policy.

Biden’s continued reliance on his anti-Israel, pro-Hamas and pro-Iran officials is not merely a policy disaster. It is a political problem. As Democratic pollster Doug Schoen explained at The Hill on Thursday, public support for Israel among both Democrats and Republicans is sky-high. Americans don’t merely support Israel; they support Israel passionately.

As Schoen noted, 81% of Republicans and 74% of Democrats support providing Israel with military support. Some 80% of Republicans and 72% of Democrats feel that it is important for the United States to protect Israel. And 74% of Americans believe that supporting Israel is the more important than other geopolitical priorities.

Schoen concluded his article by noting, “Frankly, in my five decades of experience in politics, including polling extensively on issues related to Israel and the America-Israel relationship, the current support for Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorists who seek its destruction is like nothing I’ve seen before.”

Sensitive to public opinion on the one hand and his administration officials on the other, Biden tried to thread the needle on Wednesday. The results weren’t pretty.

At a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Tony Albanese, Biden restated his administration’s commitment to provide Israel with the arms it needs to defeat Hamas. But he then demanded that Israel resupply Hamas under the euphemistic headline: “Humanitarian aid.”

A brewing rebellion

While Palestinian election results, polling data and the wide-scale celebrations of Hamas’s atrocities across Gaza, Judea and Samaria are evidence that Hamas represents a large majority of Palestinians in Gaza, and Judea and Samaria, Biden insisted that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people.

His false assertion is a necessary component of his administration’s strategic goal, which he restated at the press conference—the establishment of a Palestinian state in Gaza, Judea, Samaria and portions of Jerusalem.

To defend the proposition that Israel must agree to establish a state in its heartland for a people that supports and engages in acts of genocide of Jewry and seeks the annihilation of the Jewish state, Biden turned to Amr’s playbook: He demonized the half-million Israeli Jews who live in Judea and Samaria.

“I continue to be alarmed about extremist settlers attacking Palestinians in the West Bank that—pouring gasoline on fire is what it’s like. They’re … attacking Palestinians in places that they’re entitled to be, and it has to stop. They have to be held accountable. And it has to stop now,” he said angrily.

Biden’s broadside is unsupported by facts. Although several dozen Palestinian terrorists in Judea and Samaria have been killed in gun battles with IDF forces in Judea and Samaria since Oct. 7, no Israeli civilians were involved in any of the clashes.

On the other hand, the morning after Biden launched his slanderous broadside, a Palestinian mob outside a Jewish farm in the Binyamin region attacked two Israeli shepherds, critically wounding one.

Many Israeli media outlets responded with shock and anger at Biden’s demand for Israel to accept that the goal of the war is to establish a Palestinian state. One headline blared: “Biden deceived us.”

In an effort to play to both sides, at the same press conference, Biden rejected claims by Hamas’s “Gaza Health Ministry” that Israel has killed 6,000 civilians, including 2,700 children in Gaza, saying, “I have no confidence in the numbers the Palestinians are using.”

If Israelis were stunned and angered by Biden’s hostile messages directed against them, Biden’s rejection of Hamas’s casualty propaganda enraged Hamas’s allies in Washington. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) demanded that Biden apologize. Furious Hamas supporters at the State Department showed The Huffington Post 20 department cables where Hamas’s “Gaza Health Ministry” numbers were accepted as credible.

To quell the brewing rebellion of their own officials, both National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Tony Blinken have reportedly conducted “listening sessions” with these pro-Hamas staffers to make sure they feel “listened to” by their bosses. There have been no reports that any of these pro-terror officials have been fired.

The rancor in the ranks of the Hamas supporters in the administration and their supporters in the progressive base is also a political issue. Biden’s support for Israel, limited though it has been is costing him support among Muslim Americans and pro-Hamas progressives. A Gallup poll of Democrats from Oct. 3 to Oct. 23 shows that Biden’s support among Democrats went down 11% in three weeks and now stands at 75%.

These numbers, aligned with Schoen’s data, expose Biden’s conundrum. If Biden maintains his support for Israel, then he will anger, alienate and perhaps permanently lose the support of his administration and the activist progressive base of his party. And if he stands with his base—and his pro-Iran and pro-Hamas officials and voters—he will alienate the American public. Either way, he undermines his standing as he moves towards an election year.

In “The Caroline Glick Show” this week, historian Victor Davis Hanson argued that with the public’s stalwart support for Israel, and Iran’s escalating attacks against the United States through its proxies, Biden will be forced to stand with Israel even more forthrightly in the weeks to come.

If the opposite occurs, if Biden opts to stand with Hady Amr, Robert Malley’s acolytes, and their allies and comrades throughout the administration, as well as with the Democrat Party’s pro-Hamas camp, and against three-quarters of the American public, it will be a testament to the brittleness of the administration’s extremism. It will also constitute a rejection of the democratic norms of governance that have underpinned American society and politics for 250 years.
