The vice president said some of the investments will go toward 10 meatpacking facilities in Kansas, where he was speaking to boost GOP turnout in midterms.
Vice President J.D. Vance announced Monday at a GOP midterm campaign rally in Kansas that the Department of Agriculture is investing tens of millions of dollars in American meatpacking facilities, a move intended to make the country more self-reliant.
"Today, the Department of Agriculture is announcing millions of dollars in new grants toward 10 meatpacking facilities right here in the state of Kansas," Vance said, adding the investment would not be possible without Kansas GOP Sen. Roger Marshall.
The Agriculture Department said in a release that it is investing $57 million to boost American ranchers and expand their capacity and create “new and better markets through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program.”
The money will be separated into 147 grants and spread across 40 states.
“President Trump is focused on putting American ranchers first, and we are committed to achieving this vision at USDA," Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement. "Today’s announcement to provide investments in small and medium-sized meat processors builds on President Trump’s Executive Order 'Promoting Fair Competition in Livestock Markets and Expanding Market Access for American Meat Producers.'
"We are focused on rebuilding the Great American Cattle Herd, and providing more local processing opportunities will continue to give confidence to our ranchers to help us fulfill this goal," she added.
The announcement comes after Vance announced last week in Nebraska that the Trump administration is investing $1.3 billion in domestic fertilizer manufacturing.
It also comes after President Trump signed an executive order earlier this month that expanded access to tax-exempt, red-dyed diesel, which is typically used in farm and construction equipment.
