Rep. Ilhan Omar: We Are “People of the Same Blood”, “Somalians First”, “US Government Will Only Do” What We “Tell Them To Do” - Daniel Greenfield

by Daniel Greenfield

"I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the US system"

America First? Somalia First!

The context for Rep. Ilhan Omar’s rant is an emerging deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, an unrecognized splinter country that broke off from Somalia. (The underlying issues, as usual in the region, involve clans. Omar’s is on the side of Somali dominance.) When I first wrote about the Somaliland deal, people asked me what relevance does this have to America.

Rep. Ilhan Omar helpfully answers that question by explaining that it’s about Somalia Muslims imposing their will on America.

Omar has always been the Squad member dumb enough to say what she really thinks when she thinks people aren’t really paying attention. Hence the ‘Benjamins’ remark. But that’s not surprising considering the decisions she’s made in her personal life shows she has no self-control. Here she thinks she’s making a speech to the hometown crowd in her own language and no one will know. The problem is she’s basically urging a Jihad against Somaliland at a time when its government and people are highly attuned to influence campaigns in D.C. and so this video was instead translated, made public and released to a much wider audience.

In key moments, Rep. Ilhan Omar asserts that Somali tribalism is superior not only to American citizenship (a subject not even worthy of note in this context), but Islam.

“We as Somalians,” the translation describes, are an “organized society”, “people of one blood”, “brothers and sisters”, “people who know they are Somalians first, Muslims second.”

That line is important: Somali tribalism transcends Islam.

(That’s a good justification for killing other Muslims over tribal issues.)

Rep. Omar then moves to attack Somaliland for betraying the Somali consensus and then tells her audience that they can stop Somaliland.

“The US government will only do what Somalians in the US tell them to do,” the translation states. “They will do what we want and nothing else. They must follow our orders.”

“We Somalians must have that confidence in ourselves that we call for the shots in the US… the US is a country where one of your daughters is in congress to represent your interest for as long as I am in the US Congress, Somalia will never be in danger, in waters will not be stolen by Ethiopia… the US would not dare to support anyone against Somalia.”

“Sleep in comfort knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the US system,” she says.

Talking about protecting Somalia’s interests from “inside the US system” is really stark.

Then she repeatedly describes Somalia’s president as “our president”.

Rep. Omar’s speech is raw, unfiltered tribalism. It views America as nothing but a means to an end with no regard for it. Omar’s president is Somali. Her nation is Somalia. She’s living here for convenience and nothing else. Americans are inferior to the superior Somalis and, like all inferiors, can be made to follow the orders of Somalis.

I haven’t verified the translation and can’t speak the language, but if accurate, it is really damning.

That sums up the Somali impact on our politics. Omar’s first duty is to the tribal interests of Somalis and then to that of Islam. America is just a vehicle for those interests. At best. And at worst, it’s an enemy to be subjugated to Somalia and Islam.
