New York Times Claims Hebrew, the Language of the Bible, “Symbolizes Far-Right Militarism” - Daniel Greenfield

by Daniel Greenfield

When you think of Moses, King David, and the Prophet Jeremiah, you think of "far-right militarism".

Is the New York Times even a newspaper or an ongoing 80-year antisemitic hate crime?

Thus far the newspaper has

1. Covered up the Holocaust

2. Covered up Communist terror

3. Marked the names of Jewish Congressmen opposed to the Iran Deal in yellow

4. Blamed Orthodox Jews for spreading COVID-19 and supported Gov. Cuomo’s campaign of repression

5. Agitated for the government to crack down on religious Jewish schools

…and now…

6. Described Hebrew, the language of the Jewish people for thousands of years, as embodying “Far-Right Militarism”.

In a bizarre op-ed titled, ‘Yiddish Is Having a Moment’, the leftist author claims that, “Hebrew, which officially became the national language of the state of Israel in 1948, is spoken by about nine million people around the world. For some, the language symbolizes far-right Israeli militarism.”

When you think of Moses, King David, and the Prophet Jeremiah, not to mention the Bible, you think of “far-right Israeli militarism”.

Ilan Stevens, the leftist ignoramus responsible for this op-ed, claims that Zionists vilified Yiddish, when what he’s actually doing is echoing Soviet Communist propaganda which defined Yiddish as the language of the “working class” and Hebrew as a nationalist language that was banned. Soviet Jews, like my mother, smuggled and copied Hebrew dictionaries by hand while knowing that they faced prison if they were caught.

Yiddish is heavily dependent on Hebrew and German. Demonizing Hebrew to uphold Yiddish makes no sense for anyone except Communists. But professional ‘Yiddishists’, like Stevens, tend to be of that ilk.

The reality is that the only people who speak Yiddish as a living language in any sizable number are the Chassidic Jews that the New York Times has made a special point of targeting and persecuting.

The leftist Yiddishists who try to keep the language alive for its secular literature have failed miserably as they have failed to maintain any kind of Jewish identity.

Stevens claims that Yiddish is “having a moment” because “streaming platforms like Netflix have released series, including Shtisel, Unorthodox and Rough Diamonds, fully or partially in Yiddish.”

That’s not Yiddish having a moment. That’s Orthodox Jews having a moment.

As Stevens admits, “nowadays the vast majority of those who speak the language are ultra-Orthodox. They aren’t multilingual, as secular Yiddish speakers always were.”

It ought to go without saying that they are multilingual. They speak English, they speak Yiddish and they pray and learn the word of G-d in Hebrew.

The language they consider the holy tongue that to Stevens and his Yevsektsia buddies is the language of “far right militarism”.
