Brigadier General (ret.) Yechiam Sasson, formerly the head of the Counter Terrorism Bureau, said on Tuesday that Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza is Israel's opportunity to change the rules of the game.

"I hope this time the results of the operation will be different,” he told Arutz Sheva. “I estimate that we are currently in a window of opportunity in which we can and should change the rules of the game of deterrence between Israel, Hamas and the other organizations. We need to reach a point where the deterrence will be one-sided.”

Despite Israel’s call-up of 40,000 reservists to the Gaza border ahead of a possible ground operation in Gaza, Sasson said that he is uncertain that a ground offensive is necessary.

"We should hit their military infrastructure, security infrastructure, deal them a painful and very difficult blow,” he said, adding that the IDF should carry out “direct and intelligence-related military activities that involve the isolation of the Gaza Strip to prevent the transfer of weapons."

“This is a problematic situation, Gaza is full of terrorists and terrorism, and it would be wise to continue the fighting in all those ways I mentioned, until we reach a situation in which the damage to Hamas will be heavy,” noted Sasson.
