Book Review: Thomas Sowell's "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" - Sally Zahav

by Sally Zahav

This book is bound to challenge some of your preconceptions about cultures and how they evolve and are transmitted.

During these unsettled and unsettling times of racial strife and political madness, I have been listening to the works of several black conservative writers, economists, commentators, notably Jason Riley (Please Stop Helping Us and others), Larry Elder (Bad News for Race Hustlers and others), Shelby Steele (White Guilt, and others) and Thomas Sowell, author of more than 50 books, including Black Rednecks and White Liberals

Dr. Sowell graduated Howard University and then entered Harvard University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He ultimately earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago and has been a prolific researcher, writer and lecturer ever since. His writing style is clear and enjoyable.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals is not a book about economics, but about the origin of what has come to be accepted as the "Ghetto culture", prevalent in today's poor, black neighborhoods.  His conclusions are quite surprising, but as is always the case with Dr. Sowell, there is plenty of data to back up his thesis. This book is bound to challenge some of your preconceptions about cultures and how they evolve and are transmitted.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals is available in audio form, as well, at audible.com and audiobooks.com

Enjoy!
