Israeli officials said Haddad took over the role after the death of his predecessor, Mohammed Sinwar.
Israel said it has killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the leader of Hamas’ military wing and one of the key planners behind the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks that sparked the war in Gaza.
According to the Israeli military, Haddad was killed in an airstrike in Gaza City on Friday.
He was considered one of the last senior Hamas commanders involved in organizing and carrying out the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, the Associated Press reported.
Israeli officials said Haddad took over the role after the death of his predecessor, Mohammed Sinwar. On Saturday, Haddad’s family confirmed his death to The AP.
The killing comes as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains unstable, with major sticking points, including the disarmament of Hamas, continuing to complicate progress in negotiations.
