Palestinian Authority Declares Its Heartfelt Support for Communist China - Hugh Fitzgerald

 by Hugh Fitzgerald

So will Biden cut off the lavish U.S. aid to the PA?

While the U.S. has now identified Communist China as its greatest threat, the Palestinian Authority has consistently declared its total support for Beijing, and has done so yet again as tensions rise over Taiwan. Yet this support does not seem to bother the Bidenites, who continue to lavish hundreds of millions of dollars in aid on the PA. A report on Mahmoud Abbas’ latest embrace of the hard men in Beijing is here: “Palestinian Authority Declares Support for Chinese Regime as Tensions Deepen Between Washington and Beijing,” by Ben Cohen, Algemeiner, August 2, 2022:

The Palestinian Authority (PA) on Tuesday declared its full support for the People’s Republic of China amid renewed tensions between Beijing and Washington, DC, over the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

In a statement carried by the official PA news agency WAFA, the PA “affirmed its position supporting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and the unity of the People’s Republic of China.” It stated that the Palestinians held to a “longstanding position supporting the friendly People’s Republic of China and its sovereignty, territorial integrity and fully respecting the One China Policy principle.”…

In other words, the PA denies the right of Taiwan to exist as the only democratic Chinese state, and insists that Communist China’s claim to the island must be supported.

The PA’s statement was issued as Pelosi touched down in the Taiwanese capital Taipei.

“Our congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant democracy,” Pelosi said in a statement shortly after landing. “America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy.”

China has remained a bastion of political support for the Palestinians at the UN. Addressing the UN Security Council last week, the deputy chief of the Chinese mission to the UN, Geng Shuang, urged “more active and vigorous actions on the Palestinian issue” as he protested that the “legitimate rights of the Palestinian people have been continuously violated” by Israel.

The Palestinian leadership has responded in kind, including by declaring its support for Beijing’s repression of the Uyghur Muslim minority in the north-western region of Xinjiang, which many states and human rights organizations have termed a genocide. In July 2019, the PA added its signature to a letter that lavishly praised the Chinese regime for its “remarkable achievements in protecting and promoting human rights through development,” going on to assert that democratic states should “refrain from employing unfounded charges against China” by approaching the Uyghur human rights emergency “in an objective and impartial manner … with true and genuinely credible information.” Other states to endorse the letter included Venezuela, Iran, Cuba and Syria.

What a lineup of the world’s most hideous regimes, declaring their support for Red China! The P.A. is proud to be in that galère. That tells us all we need to know about Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority. Abbas, who routinely arrests his political opponents, and not long ago had his goons beat to death Nizar Banat, his most effective critic, of course applauds the greatest of all police states, the People’s Republic of China, for its “protecting and promoting human rights through development” – meaning that the economic development in China justifies the regime’s riding roughshod over human rights. In the past the PA has not only refrained from criticizing, but actually supported, China’s suppression of the Muslim Uighurs, preferring to side with fellow despots in Beijing rather than with their fellow Muslims.

The PA’s warm words for China ought to give the Bidenites pause. Is the P.A., which has stoutly backed Putin’s aggression in Ukraine, and hailed China for its “remarkable achievements in protecting and promoting human rights,” really to continue to be the recipient of hundreds of millions of dollars from American taxpayers? Why not halt that aid, and let the P.A. go hat in hand instead to its spiritual cousins and political allies, Putin’s Russia and Communist China?
