Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will decide tonight (Monday) whether to allow Jews to ascend to the Temple Mount tomorrow, the last intermediate day of Passover.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and other senior security officials support allowing Jews to visit the holiest site in Judaism, but the police oppose it.
Netanyahu will also deliver a security statement this evening from the Kirya in Tel Aviv in light of the recent security escalation in which four civilians were murdered in terrorist attacks and dozens of rockets were fired at Israel by terrorists in Lebanon and Gaza last week, during the first three days of Passover.
Netanyahu recently convened a consultation regarding the question of Jews entering the Temple Mount during the last 10 days of the month of Ramadan. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and other senior officials in the defense establishment participated in the discussion.
During the discussion, Ben-Gvir demanded that the number of days the Temple Mount is closed to Jewish visitors at the end of Ramadan be reduced from the usual ten days. Ben-Gvir demanded that on the seventh day of Passover Jews be allowed to ascend the mount. Minister Gallant supported his position.
The police claimed that the situation is volatile and allowing the visits could have very serious consequences.
