Iran suspends cooperation with UN's International Atomic Energy Agency - Natalia Mittelstadt

Iran said it's suspending cooperation with the IAEA until “conditions are met,” including “ensuring the security” of the country's facilities and scientists.

Iran suspended its cooperation with the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency upon Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's ratification of the legislation.

The ratification occurred Wednesday, following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran's most critical nuclear facilities last month, The Hill news outlet reported.

Iran says its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes and that it's suspending cooperation with the IAEA until “conditions are met,” including “ensuring the security” of the country's facilities and scientists. Israel claims that it killed 14 Iranian nuclear scientists in its attacks on Iran last month.

The Iranian government claims the new law signed Wednesday is occurring under the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its related safeguards. The international treaty with 190 countries requires cooperation with the IAEA.

“That implies that they have to work with the agency,” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told CBS News on Sunday, after the Iranian Parliament passed the law.

“An international treaty, of course, takes precedence. You cannot invoke an internal law not to abide with an international treaty,” he continued. “But Iran is not saying that at the moment, and I think this is constructive.”

Iranian officials aren't looking to rush into talks with the U.S. about Iran's nuclear program.

“In order for us to decide to reengage, we will have to first ensure that America will not revert back to targeting us in a military attack during the negotiations,” Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said in a CBS News interview that aired Sunday.

“The doors of diplomacy will never slam shut,” he added.
