The three non-citizens voted in Florida and two of them admitted to voting in 2020 federal elections. The third, a Brazilian national, voted in a federal election in 2024 after becoming a lawful permanent resident.
The Justice Department said Monday that three non-United States citizens in Florida have confessed to having knowingly voted in federal elections despite not being eligible to do so.
Federal law requires voters to be American citizens in order to vote on the federal level, but some states and cities allow non-citizens to vote in local elections.
The three non-citizens voted in Florida and two of them admitted to voting in 2020 federal elections. The third, a Brazilian national, voted in a federal election in 2024 after becoming a lawful permanent resident.
“Voting in federal elections is one of the most important rights and responsibilities of American citizenship,” U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida said in a statement. “Federal law is clear: only United States citizens may vote in federal elections. These defendants admitted that they knowingly violated that law."
The three migrants have been identified as Brazilian Moises Lima Jr., Haitian Gordon Louis and Cuban Roberto Figueredo.
Figueredo's lawful permanent resident status had already been revoked when he submitted a Florida voter registration application in January 2020, where he falsely claimed to be a U.S. citizen and falsely affirmed he was eligible to vote.
All three non-citizens pleaded guilty to voting by an alien and it comes as the Trump administration cracks down on ineligible voters. A recent Republican probe in New Jersey found hundreds of ineligible voters.
