Poll: 2/3 of religious public oppose freezing judicial reforms - Israel National News

 by Israel National News

Finance Minister Smotrich calls on right-wing voters to turn out for rally at the Knesset tonight in support of the judicial reforms.

Bezalel Smotrich

A survey conducted by the "Direct Polls" institute and published today found that two thirds of the religious population of Israel wants the government to continue to push for the passage of its planned judicial reforms and not to freeze the legislation as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

66% of the 1,300 participants in the survey stated that the legislation should be "continued", 32% said to "stop the legislation" and 2% answered, "I have no position on the issue."

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, chairman of the Religious Zionism party, issued a call to right-wing voters: "Comrades, under no circumstances should the reform to fix the justice system and strengthen Israeli democracy be stopped. We are the majority. We cannot submit to violence, anarchy, refusals [to serve in the IDF] and "wildcat" strikes. We are the majority. Let's make our voice heard."

"We are meeting tonight at 6 pm in Jerusalem, in front of the Knesset. I will be there. You should come as well. We will not let them steal our voice and our country," said Smotrich.

Prime Minister Netanyahu had reportedly planned to give a public address this morning (Monday) announcing that he is freezing the judicial reform legislation following the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant (Likud) and the mass demonstrations which subsequently broke out across the country Sunday night. He decided to hold off on making a public statement after the Religious Zionist Party issued a statement demanding the immediate passage of legislation altering the judicial appointments committee.

The Real Reason China is Arming Russia in Ukraine - Con Coughlin

 by Con Coughlin

China's People's Liberation Army is in the midst of a massive military build-up, outspokenly aimed at making China the world's dominant military power by the middle of the century.

  • Just as Iran has used Ukraine's brutal war to test the effectiveness of its drone and missile technology, so China's emerging industrial-military complex is reportedly looking for opportunities to conduct a rigorous evaluation of its new weapons systems; Chinese arms manufacturers are reportedly keen to test the effectiveness of their new weapons systems in Ukraine.

  • Chinese drones, which reports say are due to be delivered to the Russian Defence Ministry next month, would enable the Russians to deliver warheads weighing between 35 and 50 kilograms.

  • China's People's Liberation Army is in the midst of a massive military build-up, outspokenly aimed at making China the world's dominant military power by the middle of the century. Global defence spending fell by 1.7 percent in 2021, and the US defence budget for 2024, with a supposed increase of 3.2 percent, after factoring in an inflation of 6 percent, is actually a net cut. Meanwhile, Chinese defence spending grew by 5.1 percent to $293 billion.

  • As part of its military build-up, which began in 2013, Beijing is aiming to integrate artificial intelligence in its command and control structures by 2035. In addition it is investing heavily in new fleets of warships and warplanes.

  • The Chinese military is said to be actively preparing to launch a military offensive to capture Taiwan, most likely before or during the US presidential election in November 2024, while the US is still under the administration of President Joe Biden, regarded worldwide as stunningly weak, and while the country is likely to be distracted.

  • Biden's repeated statements that he seeks "competition not conflict" with China, and that "We don't want a conflict" with Russia, can only be viewed as pleas not to escalate, rather than as a thundering deterrence.

  • "[T]he entire military must... concentrate all energy on fighting a war, direct all work toward warfare and speed up to build the ability to win." — Chinese President Xi Jinping, to China's armed forces' operational command center, Fox News, February 15, 2023.

For all Chinese President Xi Jinping's declarations of support for Russia during his state visit to Moscow, China's real motive in seeking closer ties is evidently to exploit the Ukraine conflict to test its military firepower. For all Chinese President Xi Jinping's declarations of support for Russia during his state visit to Moscow, China's real motive in seeking closer ties is evidently to exploit the Ukraine conflict to test its military firepower.

Just as Iran has used Ukraine's brutal war to test the effectiveness of its drone and missile technology, so China's emerging industrial-military complex is reportedly looking for opportunities to conduct a rigorous evaluation of its new weapons systems; Chinese arms manufacturers are reportedly keen to test the effectiveness of their new weapons systems in Ukraine.

A year after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Russia's military, having lost an estimated 200,000 men and around 90 percent of its heavy armour, including around 50 percent of its pre-invasion tank fleet, finds itself in a dire predicament.

The scale of the losses has forced the Russians to pull 1950s-era T-54 and T-55 tanks out of storage for use in the Ukrainian conflict, a clear sign that Russian forces are suffering a serious shortage of heavy armour.

These chronic shortages in both men and equipment help to explain why Russian commanders are struggling to hold on to the territory Russian forces have illegally annexed in Ukraine, let alone mount fresh offensives against the Ukrainian defenders.

If Russian forces are to make any headway this year, they will need significant supplies of weapons from other nations, as Russia's corrupt defence industry is proving incapable of providing replacement weapons and equipment at the levels required by the Russian military.

This would explain why Russia has made repeated requests for China to supply arms to support its military campaign in Ukraine. So far, Beijing's official position is that it is only prepared to provide Moscow with non-lethal aid, such as helmets and dual-use items such as aircraft parts.

US officials, though, say they have intelligence showing that China is actively considering whether to supply Russia with weapons, as it has been doing since day one. The German magazine Der Spiegel reported in February that the Russian military was engaged in negotiations with Chinese drone manufacturer Xi'an Bingo Intelligent Aviation Technology over the mass production of kamikaze drones for Russia.

Russia has been using Iranian-made drones to carry out attacks against Ukraine's infrastructure and other targets, and the supply of Chinese drones, which reports say are due to be delivered to the Russian Defence Ministry next month, would enable the Russians to deliver warheads weighing between 35 and 50 kilograms.

Russian forces in Ukraine have already been using Chinese-made commercial drones, supplied by China-based Da-Jiang Innovations Science & Technology Co., known as DJI, according to an analysis of customs records, while others are transported through the United Arab Emirates.

The supply of Chinese-made military drones to Russia would, obviously, greatly enhance the offensive capabilities of Russian forces.

Western intelligence officials believe the prospect of Beijing increasing its military support for Ukraine has risen considerably following Xi's summit with Putin in Moscow this month.

China's People's Liberation Army is in the midst of a massive military build-up, outspokenly aimed at making China the world's dominant military power by the middle of the century.

As part of its military build-up, which began in 2013, Beijing is aiming to integrate artificial intelligence in its command and control structures by 2035. In addition it is investing heavily in new fleets of warships and warplanes. China's recent advances in advanced weaponry such as missiles and guided weapons is a particular concern for the West.

Chinese defence firms now rank as some of the biggest in the world, reversing the situation whereby, only a decade ago, Beijing was relying on Russia for its arms supplies, having signed a $7 billion arms deal with Moscow as recently as 2015.

Now the tables have turned. Xi, who recently secured his third five-year-term as president, makes no secret of his desire to re-establish Beijing's control over Taiwan. The general consensus among Western security officials being that he will attempt to reclaim Taiwan by the end of the decade at the latest.

The Chinese military is said to be actively preparing to launch a military offensive to capture Taiwan, most likely before or during the US presidential election in November 2024, while the US is still under the administration of President Joe Biden, regarded worldwide as stunningly weak (such as here, here, and here), and while the country is likely to be distracted.

Biden's repeated statements that he seeks "competition not conflict" with China, and that "We don't want a conflict" with Russia, can only be viewed as pleas not to escalate, rather than as a thundering deterrence.

According to recent comments made by CIA Director William Burns, Beijing aims to be conflict-ready by 2027.

This is certainly the message Xi relayed to China's military chiefs during a visit to the country's operational command centre at the end of last year when he warned "the entire military must... concentrate all energy on fighting a war, direct all work toward warfare and speed up to build the ability to win."

Minnesota advances 'trans refuge' bill opponents say would strip custody from non-consenting parents - Chris Pandolfo

 by Chris Pandolfo

Supporters say Minnesota 'trans refuge' bill is needed to ensure transgender kids have access to the care they need, but opponents say it will threaten to take children away from parents who don't consent to transitioning their kid

Minnesota lawmakers on Thursday advanced legislation that would establish the state as a "trans refuge" for children who are seeking transgender medical procedures but who may be denied "gender-affirming care" in other states.

In a party-line 68-62 vote, the Minnesota House passed HF 146, which had been introduced by Rep. Leigh Finke of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Finke is the state's first transgender lawmaker.

Democrats supporting the bill say the legislation will protect transgender people, their families and healthcare providers from facing legal repercussions for traveling to Minnesota to obtain cross-sex hormone prescriptions or sex-change procedures. Similar legislation has been introduced in California and other states with Democratic-controlled legislatures, which seek to counter Republican states that have sought to ban transgender procedures for minors.

"Gender-affirming care is lifesaving health care," Finke told reporters ahead of debate on the bill. "Withholding or delaying gender-affirming care can have a dramatic impact on the mental health of any individual who needs it. Rates of depression, suicide, substance abuse are dramatically higher in transgender and gender-expansive individuals who lack access to care."

Dozens of protesters chanted for and against a bill that would make Minnesota a trans refuge state, which is a counter to states attempting to ban transgender care for minors, Thursday, March 23, 2023, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

HF146 would prevent law enforcement from removing a child from parental custody in accordance with an order from outside Minnesota.

This legislation is meant to ensure that children undergoing gender transition procedures allowed under Minnesota law cannot be governed by child protection laws of other states. It's a direct response to neighboring South Dakota, where Republican Gov. Kristi Noem signed a law banning puberty blockers, cross-sex hormone treatments, and sex-change operations for transgender individuals under the age of 18.

Advocates for transgender people say that denying "gender-affirming care" to trans youth inflicts harm on a marginalized group that is already at a higher risk of suicide.

"The protections outlined in HF 146 are vital for health care providers, who can continue to provide gender-affirming health care to their patients consistent with best practices, without fear of interference or punishment from other states," said Jess Braverman, Legal Director for Gender Justice. "Parents are being forced to make an impossible decision, between staying in their homes and risking their child’s health and safety, or uprooting their lives and relocating, often at great personal cost. We can do our part to help by making it clear that if families move to Minnesota, they and their children will be protected under the law."

However, conservative groups and family law attorneys warn that the legislation is written in such a way as to open the door for Minnesota parents to lose custody of their children if they refuse to provide them with transgender care.

"The most insidious aspect of this bill is the language that adds children who are being denied ‘gender-affirming care’ (defined as everything from therapy to hormone blockers, to transition surgery) to what amounts to the definition for a child ‘in need of protection or services’ in Minnesota, allowing the courts to take ‘emergency custody’ of the child," said Bob Roby, a licensed attorney in Minnesota with more than 30 years experience in family and juvenile court.

Roby has studied HF 146 extensively in preparation to testify before legislative committees. He said that the way the bill is written, categorizing a child being denied transgender care alongside abuse, turns laws meant to protect children on their head.

"This kind of court power has a long-standing precedent in Minnesota for keeping children safe. When a child is at risk of being harmed by a parent or custodian, the State has immediate authority to remove and protect the child from harm. Without this, there would be no way to protect children in those situations," Roby told Fox News Digital in an email. "To add children who are being denied ‘gender affirming care’ to the definition of children in need of this kind of drastic emergency action is obviously unwarranted."

(AP Photo/Trisha Ahmed)

Roby observed that courts do not recognize parental rights or any other right where a child is being abused. He accused the state legislature of "criminal negligence" for failing to consider the impact of HF 146.

Renee Carlson, General Counsel of True North Legal, a legal initiative of Minnesota Family Council, warned that the bill as written will "create confusion and increased litigation for the courts, while stripping parents of their fundamental rights, disregarding informed consent, and encouraging young children on a dangerous path to serious lifelong biological and medical consequences."

Transgender issues are highly controversial, with strong feelings on both sides. Hundreds of supporters and opponents of the legislation protested at the state Capitol building as lawmakers debated the bill. Black signs with white text said, "Protect Kids" as dozens yelled, "Vote no!" Others shouted back, "Vote yes!" and held signs with colors from the trans flag -- baby blue and pink -- that read, "You belong here."

Whether gender-affirming care is right for minors has become a major flash point in the culture wars across the country. The unicameral Nebraska Legislature gave preliminary approval earlier Thursday to a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Georgia's governor, Republican Brian Kemp, signed a ban Thursday. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, another Republican, did so Wednesday. The Missouri Senate gave preliminary approval to a ban Tuesday. Bans were enacted earlier in South Dakota, Utah and Mississippi.

The "trans refuge" bill, which seeks to counter those efforts, now heads to the Minnesota state Senate, where Democrats hold a one-seat majority. A similar bill is awaiting further action there after receiving a hearing last month. The chief Senate author, Sen. Erin Maye Quade, of Apple Valley, told the Associated Press that she expects a floor vote there soon.

The Associated Press and Fox News' Timothy Nerozzi contributed to this report.

Obviating elections - Dr. Martin Sherman

 by Dr. Martin Sherman

Hat tip: Dr. Carolyn Tal

If the so-called "champions of democracy" succeed in obstructing the judicial reforms, democratic rule will be replaced by mob rule—and Israel will be teetering on the brink of an Orwellian dystopia

The starkest indicators [of erosion of democracy] which presumably underlie the country’s downgrading in international democracy ratings, involve elite decisions about rejecting election results - James N. Druckman, Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University, Misperceptions, Competition, and Support for Democracy, p. 24, Dec 2022.

If the copiously funded mob succeeds in compelling the Israeli government to back away from its much-needed policy of reigning in the rampant legal establishment in general, and the unbridled judiciary, in particular, it will be the end of an era in Israel.

Blatantly absurd

For if they succeed, democratic rule will have been replaced by mob rule, in which a highly motivated and abundantly financed minority can impose its will on the elected majority and compel it to abandon a policy, which in the elections, it pledged to implement. In this regard, the accumulating signs of the government buckling under the relentless pressure of the increasingly raucous and unruly street demonstrations are profoundly perturbing.

There are at least two remarkable aspects of the ongoing protests. One is just how manifestly ludicrous their professed motivation is; the other is how astonishingly effective their well-oiled, well-executed, and well-funded promotional campaign has been in hoodwinking well-off, well-educated echelons in Israeli society.

As for the alleged motivation—defense of democracy from descent into dictatorship—the demonstrators have yet to present a persuasive causal chain linking the proposed changes in the judicial system to the demise of democracy in Israel. Indeed, it is highly unlikely that they—or anyone else—could.

After all, it is plainly absurd to claim that a system, in which a dozen or so unelected officials, with no accountability to the public, have the ultimate authority on matters of vital importance, is more democratic than one, in which that authority is vested in the hands of 61 (or more) elected parliamentarians, regularly answerable to the public.

"Democracy is Dictatorship": Descent into dystopia?

So, are the opponents of judicial reforms claiming that, if the reforms are implemented, Israel will metamorphize into a "dictatorial democracy"…or is that "democratic dictatorship"? Indeed, the allegation is no less oxymoronic than "tolerant tyranny" or "treacherously trustworthy".

Disturbingly, the opposition's calculated abuse of language is strongly reminiscent of the abuse of language chillingly depicted in Orwell's dystopian novel, Nineteen-Eighty-Four. In it, "Big Brother, the totalitarian regime, imposed the use of a contrived language, NewSpeak, "designed to diminish the range of thought". Typical of the elements employed in NewSpeak is the juxtaposition of diametric opposites as in the official motto of the totalitarian regime: War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.

In perturbingly similar vein, the promoters of the anti-reform protests are in effect asserting that "democracy is dictatorship", when decisions are shifted to accountable democratically elected forums from unaccountable, unelected ones.

Thus, although the opponents of the judicial reforms are in the Opposition, their modus operandi is imposing a dystopian aura on the dispute over those reforms, in which truth is cast to the wind—precluding any chance of sincere dialogue to reduce acrimony and reach some consensual resolution.

Brazen, blatant hypocrisy

Of course, the claim that the implementation of the proposed judicial reforms will imperil Israeli democracy is clearly the pinnacle of hypocrisy. After all, those who today vociferously oppose the reforms, previously endorsed precisely the same measures.

Arguably, the most brazen, blatant display of barefaced double standards behind the anti-reform demonstrators is that of Opposition leader, Yair Lapid. On February 27, 2023, during a plenary debate on judicial reform, Lapid railed: “Stop this insane legislation.”

However, in a 2016 address to Kohelet Policy Forum, the organization that played a pivotal role in the formulation of the proposed judicial reforms, Lapid laid out his views on the legal system, which mirrored almost identical measures to those in reforms put forward by today's coalition: “I have opposed, and I still oppose, judicial activism of the sort introduced by [former Supreme Court President] Justice Aharon Barak. I don’t think it is right that everything is justiciable. I don’t think it is right for the Supreme Court to change fundamental things in accordance with what it refers to as the judgment of ‘the reasonable person.’ That’s an amorphous and completely subjective definition that the Knesset never introduced to the legal code. It’s not right in my mind that the separation of powers, the sacrosanct foundation of the democratic method, should be breached by one branch of government placing itself above the others.”

No accommodation possible

From the foregoing analysis, one thing should be depressingly clear: There can be no consensual resolution to the ongoing clash—because the clash itself is not only contrived, but is, in fact, the objective of the demonstrators—rather than a means to achieve an end.

Paradoxically, there can be no consensual resolution to the dispute because there is no real substantive difference on the issues in dispute—as evidenced by the prior support for the reforms by those who now oppose it—see for example here, here, here, here
and again here.

This absence of real substantive differences is underscored by the fact that, although opponents of the reform almost uniformly concede that the judicial system does need some form of overhaul, they assiduously refrain from stipulating what measures they have in mind—thus averting any chance of comparing what the differences are between their proposals and that of the current coalition.

Democratic rule replaced by mob rule

It should thus be clear that the ongoing dispute, allegedly about a substantive difference of opinion is nothing but a façade, a stage prop in a visceral fight for control of the reins of power, in which there is no place for any rational debate. Nothing will be acceptable other than abject surrender. (For greater detail on this, see my recent article here)

This is why the government must not, and cannot, back away from the reform proposal. For if does, there will be no point in any elections in the future. Indeed, every time the elected government decides on something of which the opposition disapproves, they will take to the street until it yields to opposition demands—and democratic rule will have been replaced by mob rule.

Iran and the Changing of Course! - Amir Taheri

 by Amir Taheri

[A]n interesting sign has come with the purges carried among security forces with some of the more hardline officers moved aside or sent into early retirement.

  • Perhaps a more interesting sign has come with the purges carried among security forces with some of the more hardline officers moved aside or sent into early retirement.

  • If there is indeed a change of course, the most important part of the scheme is the prospect of normalization with Saudi Arabia.

  • Soon, however, it became clear that, flush with massive oil revenues due to high prices and rising exports, the Tehran leadership was reverting to its dream of hegemony in "West Asia."

  • Are we heading for a Deja-vu of the Deja-vu?

Pictured: Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issues a message for the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) on March 21, 2023. (Image source: khamenei.ir)

Is the leadership in Iran trying to change course or are we witnessing a new tactic?

The signals coming from Tehran make both assumptions plausible. To begin with, the official discourse has shown a certain degree of moderation.

In his special message for the Iranian New Year (Nowruz) last Tuesday, for example, "Supreme Guide" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei abandoned his usual themes of "wiping Israel off the map", "rubbing America's nose in the dust" and leading the "Resistance Front" to victory. Nor did he repeat the usual claims that the Islamic Republic was benefiting from foreign sanctions and that its achievements had aroused "the jealousy of big powers." Instead, he designated the coming year as "The Year of Curbing Inflation" and implicitly admitted that Iran remains a poverty-stricken country.

"We are not the only country hit by inflation and difficulties of life," he said. "Even the rich and advanced nations now face difficulties of their own."

He also denied that the Islamic Republic was siding with Russia in the Ukraine war, calling the claim "an utter lie."

Khamenei's new tone has been echoed by messages from and speeches by the ayatollah's senior aides, including President Ebrahim Raisi, Islamic Majlis Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, and a roster of regime ayatollahs and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps generals.

At the same time, over 8,000 out of an estimated 20,000 recent protesters have been pardoned, ostensibly to mark the new year.

Perhaps a more interesting sign has come with the purges carried among security forces with some of the more hardline officers moved aside or sent into early retirement.

The diplomatic corps is also undergoing a silent purge, with at least 30 ambassadors replaced and the nominal foreign minister, the hardliner Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, shut out of key dossiers such as normalization with Saudi Arabia, concluding a new security accord with Iraq, and negotiating a timetable for the withdrawal of Iranian troops from Syria. Instead, Khamenei has recalled figures long associated with the rival faction once headed by the late Ayatollah Ali-Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. It was Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a former defense minister and current secretary of the High Council of National Security, who was sent to Beijing to conclude a deal aimed at restoring diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia.

The same Shamkhani has also taken over the dossier of relations with Iraq and launched a normalization process with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, while Kamal Kharrzi and Abbas Araqchi, two diplomats who served under Rafsanjani and President Muhammad Khatami are given the even tougher task of disengaging Iran from the Syrian quagmire without endangering Bashar al-Assad's position in parts of the country under his nominal control.

All these moves on the diplomatic chessboard indicate a sidelining of the Quds Force, which under the late General Qassem Soleimani had exclusive control over Iran's policy in what Tehran likes to call "West Asia" instead of the Middle East.

Khamenei has always harbored a deep suspicion of Islamic Republic's professional diplomats, believing that, being foreign-educated, most of them were seduced by the West and did not share his dream of creating "the New Islamic Civilization" as an alternative model for mankind.

Some career diplomats fanned the fires of that suspicion in a number of ways. For example, in a number of op-eds he wrote for US newspapers, former Foreign Minister Muhammad-Javad Zarif designated himself as "Iran Foreign Minister" making no mention of the Islamic Republic, let alone paying homage to Khamenei or the regime's founder "Imam" Khomeini.

Tehran's recently retired Ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, followed the same style. In his farewell message, he said he had worked to "serve the interests of the Iranian nation," making no mention of the Islamic Republic or Khamenei.

According to a study by Mahin Nava'i, over 100 Islamic Republic diplomats have at the end of their official terms or after retirement either remained in the countries of their posting or kept their families there. Though only a handful defected to join the opposition, many bought property in Europe, Britain, the US, and, above all, Canada.

No one could assert this as fact, but some analysts believe that Khamenei had also grown wary of Gen. Soleimani's increasing tendency to run his "West Asia" fiefdom as he pleased with a dwindling intellectual input from Khamenei's household.

The ayatollah's decision to tighten his personal control over key foreign policy dossiers may have been partly prompted by the past six months of nationwide protests that he believes were sustained by unprecedented support from Western powers and their allies in "West Asia." Thus, offering a less hostile profile in foreign relations could help to dishearten the protestors.

At the same time, the "Supreme Guide" is trying to reinterpret the protests as a symptom of economic discontent; a theme he emphasized in his New Year message. In that vein, he forgot his shibboleth of "resistance economics" and called for "investment and production," goals that cannot be achieved without distancing Iran from the "lone wolf" strategy it has pursued since 2005.

This is why Tehran now seems keen to revive the stalled "nuclear talks" amid unconfirmed reports of contacts between the Biden administration and Tehran's man at the UN, Saeed Iravani.

If there is indeed a change of course, the most important part of the scheme is the prospect of normalization with Saudi Arabia.

It was the Rafsanjani team, including his favorite son Mehdi, who first broke the ice with the Saudis in 1995. That was followed by the signing of a security accord and an agreement on trade and economic cooperation. The first major Saudi investment in the Islamic Republic came in 1996, when a Saudi company bought Iran's largest producer of vegetable oil.

Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz visited Tehran in 1997 with pomp and ceremony amid high hopes for closer ties.

The Saudis helped persuade the Islamic nations to let Iran host the Organisation of the Islamic Conference summit in 1997. Ignoring his hostile rhetoric, in 2007 the Saudis even invited President Mahmud Ahmadinejad, an arch-foe of Rafsanjani, to visit the kingdom in the forlorn hope of keeping the newly brokered deals on track. Soon, however, it became clear that, flush with massive oil revenues due to high prices and rising exports, the Tehran leadership was reverting to its dream of hegemony in "West Asia."

Are we heading for a Deja-vu of the Deja-vu? Only time will tell.

Commentator attacks Yoni Netanyahu's comrades: 'You have no respect for Netanyahu's loss' - Israel National News

Channel 14 News commentator Shai Goldin accuses Entebbe raid veterans of having no respect for fallen hero or his family after airport stunt

Shai Goldin, host of a popular Sunday morning program on Israel's Channel 14 News, strongly criticized the members of the Sayeret Matkal elite commando unit who participated in the legendary hostage-rescue operation on the Entebbe Airport together with Yoni Netanyahu, the late brother of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after they arrived in a Black Mercedes, the same type of vehicle used to draw the Ugandan soldiers away from the airport in 1976, at Ben Gurion Airport during the prime minister's visit to Berlin a week and a half ago.

"I really don't intend to take away one ounce of your great merits as brave warriors and as those who risked their lives in the name of the State of Israel; In general, this fashion of erasing people's past merits due to their actions in the present is something I don't particularly like. But tell me, have you completely lost it? What is wrong with you?" Goldin wrote Sunday morning.

"No, really, what was the idea? Some of the late Yoni Netanyahu's comrades from the unit, and some of the Entebbe abductees, put on a particularly crazy political/artistic performance, which simulates the famous convoy that raided the airport in Uganda, with a black Mercedes, and all the colors of camouflage, to protest against the Prime Minister on the eve of his flight to Berlin, to tell his bereaved brother to stop the judicial reform?

"Don't you have an ounce of respect for Yoni's memory? Even as a commander and as a brother in arms?" he asked. "You know that this wound, of the loss of Yoni, is perhaps the most painful and sensitive for Benjamin Netanyahu."

He noted that Yoni Netanyahu had more family and loved ones than just the current Prime Minister.

"Because if you are not able to put yourself in the place of the family members of the late Yoni, and understand how humiliating and painful and insulting the use of his death is, then your problem is not the judicial reform, but something else entirely. Something dark and deep and much more basic in your humanity," he said.

He further noted that the blockage of the entrance to the airport disrupted the lives of the average citizen far more than the schedule of the Prime Minister, who arrived by helicopter.

"I have no words to describe how poor and low and crooked a level this protest is deteriorating to. And the most amazing part is that you do not perceive how it looks from the side in the eyes of the silent majority here," he wrote. "You don't even begin to understand. And I know you don't care."

"In case you don't understand why you were defeated in the elections. In case you don't understand why this reform will pass: it is because most of the public is fed up. They are just sick of this attitude, this style, this language, this childish and violent egotism. And if you didn't internalize it on November 1st, then we'll probably have to help you understand the message more clearly in the next election," Goldin concluded.

The Group the Chinese Communists Fear the Most - Jeffrey Folks

 by Jeffrey Folks

It's rarely mentioned in the mainstream media, but the Chinese government's behavior gives it away.

I have rarely heard it mentioned in the mainstream media, but, according to reports, during the 1990s in communist China, thirty thousand members of Falun Gong were rounded up and executed.  The founder of Falun Gong, Li Hongzhi, fled China and now lives in the U.S., while in China members of the order went underground.  According to Freedom House, "Falun Gong practitioners across China have since [July 1999] been subjected to widespread surveillance, arbitrary detention, horrific torture, and extrajudicial killing — abuses which continue today."  Nonetheless, there are still some 100 million practitioners worldwide, and the movement continues to grow.

Information concerning the repression of Falun Gong is a Chinese state secret, with severe penalties for anyone attempting to obtain data.  As the Falun Data Infocenter puts it: "The CCP has also used political and financial influence around the world to either keep journalists silent, or drive false narratives about Falun Gong."  With total control inside China and compliance by foreign journalists, the Chinese Communist Party has driven a false narrative that minimizes the number of Falun Gong practitioners and hides data on the number of those abducted, tortured, killed, and killed for their organs, thus totally obscuring the record.  At the same time, Chinese and foreign media continue to suggest that the victim is the abuser: the false idea that Falun Gong is a cult with dangerous potential.

For anyone who has studied the history of or practiced Falun Gong, the enormity of this continuing abuse and misinformation is obvious.  Falun gong is a benign practice of meditation, exercise, and moral instruction with no political ties of any sort, but it is often represented, even by well-meaning Western journalists, as a "cult" or as a right-wing anti-CCP organization, as in a recent article in the Guardian, relying heavily on statements by Media Matters.  According to the article, Falun Gong and its associated media, including the Epoch Times, have engaged in "conspiracy narratives" targeting Democrats and the Chinese Communist Party and of "links" between Joe Biden and the CCP.  In fact, a great deal of evidence is emerging in the Comer investigation to show that those links are far from being conspiracy narratives.  (See also a 2020 New York Times article, which labels Falun Gong "a leading purveyor of right-wing disinformation.")

If those journalists would do their homework, beginning with studying Falun Gong websites and  the book Zhuan Falun by Li Hongzhi, instead of relying on the well funded Chinese "zero out" campaign, they would realize that Falun Gong is an uplifting instruction based on traditional, conservative Chinese practices.

The story of the Chinese government crackdown on Falun Gong is a classic example of totalitarian intolerance of competing ideas, and it involves both propaganda and physical terror.  A careful examination of the record proves that the response of the communist Chinese regime is not very different from that of ancient regimes toward their own enslaved peoples.  Despite their vast power, totalitarian leaders are fearful and at times even paranoid, as was Stalin, and the flip-side of fear is repression.

In reality, Falun Gong is a complex spiritual practice involving qijong-like exercises, positive thinking, and moral belief based on truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.  As a practitioner myself, I know how Falun Gong can transform an individual from illness to health, confusion to knowledge, and intolerance to open-mindedness.  It is obvious to me how a totalitarian regime would view Falun Gong as a threat, as indeed it would be to any form of deceit, corruption, or intolerance.  As Falun Gong spread in China during the 1990s, at one point with 60 to 100 million followers in China alone, the practice became a threat to a government that had once encouraged it as a healthy "money-saving" vehicle and a social safety valve for a dissatisfied citizenry.  Yet within months, beginning in July 1999, perhaps 100,000 followers were arrested and 30,000 executed.  Even now, nearly 4,000 practitioners were arrested in 2021 (latest figures).

It is critical to consider the magnitude of this repression, with between two and four million Falun Gong followers "detained" in forced labor camps between 2000 and 2008 alone.  Chinese policy toward Falun Gong is similar to the more widely publicized repression of Uyghurs, 1.5 million of whom have reportedly been detained in China, with hundreds of thousands of others subjected to forced sterilization, forced abortion, and religious suppression, and with the razing or damaging of 16,000 mosques.  Like totalitarian regimes of the past, the CCP appears willing to employ the most ruthless tactics in order to secure its hold on the country.

Though Falun Gong is not a political movement, the exponential growth of Falun Gong during the 1990s might well have pressured authorities to change, and as soon as China's leaders recognized this threat, they suppressed Falun Gong with a heavy hand.  One could hardly be truthful, compassionate, and forbearing and lend one's support to a communist regime governed by a few thousand members of the political elite intent on benefiting from their rule at the expense of the general population.  Falun Gong teaches a form of gentleness and goodness that threatens the lies and violence of any totalitarian government.

One must ask: if the Chinese communists are willing to imprison millions of ethnic and religious minorities and to murder tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, what are they capable of in the future?  How many lives are they willing to expend in a takeover of Taiwan?  And once Taiwan is taken, how many Taiwanese will they imprison and execute?  In the event of a war with Japan or with the United States, how many are they willing to see die, on both sides?  And if Chinese communism were ever to achieve world domination, what kind of future could we expect?  As Christians, probably something not unlike what the Uyghurs and Falun Gong have already experienced.

At the same time, the specter of Chinese repression should open our eyes to the remarkable value of our own system of democratic capitalism.  The CCP has diminished Falun Gong in China, but, like all religious and spiritual practices, Falun Gong has found a safe home in America, at least in principle, though the Biden administration continues to restrict religious practice, to challenge religious rights in the courts and in agency practices, and to unleash the power of agencies like the Justice Department and IRS against the open practice of religion.  Many of the same tactics adopted in communist China are accepted by progressives in our own country, including the encouragement of birth control and abortion, even late-term abortion and infanticide after birth.

For the present, there is still a difference between totalitarianism and democracy as practiced in the USA.  Now is a time when American citizens, media, government, and corporations need to see clearly that communist China is a totalitarian government and to recognize what it is capable of.  China's record toward Falun Gong, a violent repression that continues today, is one element in a string of crackdowns and arrests.  We do not need to send a balloon over China to understand the nature of their regime, but we do need to recognize the enormity of its abuses and take appropriate actions to defend ourselves.

A new armed group has been established in the city of Salfit in the northern West Bank, where a number of similar militias have been operating over the past year.

The new group, Battalion of Martyr Omar Abu Laila, is named after a Palestinian who carried out a shooting and stabbing attack near Ariel, killing two Israelis, a soldier and a civilian.

On March 17, 2019, Abu Laila stabbed Sgt. Gal Keidan at the Ariel Junction, grabbed the soldier’s gun and opened fire, hitting Rabbi Achiad Ettinger, who succumbed to his wounds a day later.

Abu Laila was later killed in an exchange of fire with IDF forces.

Senior Palestinian Authority officials and leaders of the ruling Fatah faction have since praised Abu Laila for carrying out the attack, and a memorial was erected for him in the village of Abwein near Ramallah where he hid before he was killed.

The group announces its establishment

In a statement announcing the establishment of the new group on Sunday, the Battalion of Martyr Omar Abu Laila said its “soldiers were preparing many surprises that would shake the brutal [Israeli] entity.”

Addressing Israelis, the group said in a statement published by the Palestinian Khabar Press news agency:

“Torment is coming to you."

Battalion of Martyr Omar Abu Laila

The Battalion will stay and expand in Salfit and its [surrounding] villages.”

Similar groups that have been operating in the northern West Bank, specifically Nablus and Jenin, include the Lions’ Deb, Jenin Battalion, Nablus Battalion and Balata [Refugee Camp] Battalion.

The groups consist of dozens of gunmen affiliated with various factions, including Fatah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

A similar group recently popped up in the city of Tulkarem, also in the northern West Bank. The group, called Tulkarem Battalion-Rapid Response, was responsible for a series of shooting attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers in the area.

Its founder and commander, Amir Abu Khadijeh, 25, was killed by Israeli troops last week in the village of Ezbet Shufeh, east of Tulkarem. Khadijeh was affiliated with Fatah’s armed group, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

The PA security forces have thus far refrained from taking real measures to rein in the armed groups. According to Palestinian sources, a number of armed groups have also surfaced in other areas of the West Bank, including Bethlehem and Hebron.

As Multiple Banks Implode, Insurance Deposit Limit Receives Renewed Scrutiny - Ben Zeisloft

As multiple banks implode, insurance deposit limit receives renewed scrutiny

Lawmakers created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, also known as the FDIC, in the first years of the Great Depression in order to prevent bank runs and restore faith in the financial system. Some lawmakers are considering revisions to the present deposit insurance limit of $250,000 as the economy grapples with the second-largest bank failure in American history.

Silicon Valley Bank provided services to half of venture-backed technology and healthcare firms in the United States; the vast majority of customers therefore maintained deposits well above the $250,000 threshold backed by the FDIC, since businesses generally require larger sums of liquid assets to conduct operations and compensate employees.

When the FDIC was forced to take over the company on March 10, however, officials guaranteed deposits both above and below the $250,000 threshold in order to prevent bank runs at other financial institutions. Signature Bank, another company with a substantial majority of large depositors, collapsed on March 12 and was likewise taken over by the FDIC.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) have each suggested in recent days that the $250,000 limit should be reexamined. Lawmakers have indeed raised the deposit insurance threshold over the years: the FDIC only offered $2,500 of deposit insurance in 1934, a threshold which gradually increased to $100,000 in 1980 before reaching $250,000 with the financial reforms that occurred amid the Great Recession in 2008. The FDIC funds deposit insurance through fees on covered banks rather than taxpayer dollars.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has sent mixed signals about whether officials would continue to support both insured and uninsured deposits, prompting unease among some investors.

David Bahnsen, the founder of Manhattan-based wealth management firm The Bahnsen Group, told The Daily Wire that he expects authorities to maintain assumptions that there is an “implicit” unlimited amount of FDIC coverage available while leaving the codified $250,000 threshold intact. Such an approach, however, would “improperly price risk and protection, and create a moral hazard for depositors, and indeed the broader financial system.”

He added that the creation of an explicit system centered around unlimited FDIC coverage would require congressional approval, which regulators “clearly want to avoid,” as well as increased payments from the “low-margin banking system.”

Silicon Valley Bank fulfilled withdrawal requests by selling a long-term bond portfolio that had declined in value amid Federal Reserve actions over the past year to hike interest rates, moves which followed excessive monetary stimulus in response to the lockdown-induced recession. Assets in the overall banking system are now $2 trillion lower than their book value, according to a study from analysts at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Bahnsen noted that the fractional reserve banking system, under which financial institutions only maintain a portion of deposits immediately available since account holders generally do not need instant access to all of their funds, will always carry some degree of bank run risk. He asserted that actions from the Federal Reserve nevertheless prompted the current volatility.

“All levered finance means financial contagion risk is a very real thing when confidence falters, and faltering confidence is the ultimate self-fulfilling prophecy,” Bahnsen continued. “The two causes of the Silicon Valley Bank implosion were the Federal Reserve’s loose policy and the Federal Reserve’s tight policy. Fractional reserve banking was a problem for Silicon Valley Bank only after the Federal Reserve policies created a boom then created a bust.”

The elephant in the reparations room - Pandra Selivanov

 by Pandra Selivanov

It's not just that they are unaffordable or that they're demanding that people who never held slaves pay people who never were slaves. There's a more profound issue that makes reparations ridiculous.

A recent proposal for reparations for slavery in San Francisco has now become a part of the United States’ endless conversation about race, more specifically, the conversation in which whites are demonized as slave owners, and blacks are extolled as slaves. Of course, slavery was ended in the United States in 1865, one hundred and fifty-eight years ago, so no white person alive today in the United States is guilty of being a slave owner, nor are there any blacks alive today in the United States who have suffered as slaves, at least not in America, but let that pass. That is not the elephant.

The elephant that no black activist is willing to admit exists is the fact that black slave owners existed. And how can they admit that? They are demanding millions of dollars for blacks in San Francisco, on the ground that blacks in San Francisco have suffered from slavery. It doesn’t fit the narrative to ponder that there were plenty of blacks back in the day who owned slaves. It is inconvenient to bring up Anthony Johnson, father of American slavery, a black man who demanded that a court bind his black indentured servant, John Casor, a slave for life. The court obliged Mr. Johnson, and American slavery was born.

Image: Marianne Celeste Dragon, a black slaveholder in New Orleans.

It is even more inconvenient to bring up the many blacks who owned slaves all through the south. Nobody demanding reparations for blacks wants to admit that blacks owned slaves in each of the original thirteen colonies and every state that allowed slavery right up to the Civil War (something that shouldn’t surprise anyone considering slavery’s prevalence in Africa since time immemorial). In Virginia, blacks could even obtain white indentured servants.

What would happen to reparations for slavery if a black applying for money was found to be descended from, say, John Carruthers Stanly, a black man in North Carolina who had three plantations and 163 slaves? Or Andrew Durnford, a sugar planter in Louisiana who owned 77 slaves?

Black women were also slave owners. Sally Seymour built up a hugely successful pastry business in Charleston, South Carolina, with slave labor. When she died, her daughter Eliza inherited both the business and the slaves.

So, there’s the elephant in the reparations room. Should whites who had nothing to do with slavery in the United States have to pay reparations to the descendants of black slave owners? And what about the risk of paying reparations to the descendants of slave owners or slave dealers in Africa? Such a transaction would be rather like Russia demanding reparations from Ukraine for the soldiers who were killed invading the country.
