Remember the media’s sudden interest in Puerto Rico when it was hit by a hurricane and lost power? Remember Anderson Cooper and the “We’re All Dying” t-shirts?
Remember how Trump was somehow personally responsible for Puerto Rico being a dysfunctional mess where the power grid goes down if you look at it funny?
Somehow this time things are different.
Nearly 5 years after Hurricane Maria devastated the island, Sunday’s storm brings 85-mph winds, pounding rains and “catastrophic” flood potential to the U.S. territory.
But this time there’s a very different narrative.
Puerto Rico was without power as nightfall approached Sunday amid catastrophic flooding, hurricane force winds and the destruction of at least one bridge, five years nearly to the day after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.
This time the coverage is straight news. No mention of the Biden administration at all. Just a brief reference to FEMA. And statements by local officials, none of which involve “We Are Dying” t-shirts or claims that the White House has personally killed everyone in Puerto Rico.
And we all know that the coverage would be very different if Trump or any Republican were in the White House.
A hurricane is one of those unavoidable forces of nature that makes power grids go down when a Democrat is in the White House, but the personal responsibility of any Republican in the White House.
