President Donald Trump escalated an ongoing trade war with Canada on Tuesday by signing proclamations that moved to ban the import of some automobiles, motorcycles, dairy products and alcohol. The list of items includes nonalcoholic beer, beers, and sparkling wines.
The measures were signed into law under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and will go into effect on Sept. 29.
Trump also hit back at Canada on Tuesday with threats to remove Canadian products from American government purchasing contracts amid ongoing trade tension.
The latest actions come after Canada retaliated against previous tariffs Trump imposed on imports from Canada by placing its own tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. The tariffs impact hundreds of American products, including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment.
"Canada has been ripping us off for years, but what many do not realize is that the Canadian Government, including Canadian Provinces, have banned American Small Businesses and Companies from selling into their Government Procurement Markets," Trump posted on Truth Social.
"This is the case even though Canada gets broad access into the massive American Government Procurement Market, including those of our States," he continued. "That is not reciprocity, it is a Canadian Trade Scam. From now on, no reciprocity – no access!"
Trump said he has directed the General Services Administration, which oversees procurement at government agencies, and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to remove Canadian products from government purchasing programs.
The move is the latest escalation in the U.S. trade war with Canada. The president previously criticized the Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier, which is headquartered in Montreal but maintains a significant presence in Kansas.
