Obama’s Syria Catastrophe - Joseph Klein

by Joseph Klein

How a cascading series of blunders by the Obama administration helped lead to the present humanitarian crisis.

The humanitarian situation in Syria worsens day by day. The Assad regime and Russia are carrying out intense lethal bombings over the rebel-held eastern Aleppo, where about 250,000 people are effectively trapped under siege by Syrian military forces. They claim they are targeting terrorists, not civilians. The United States and its allies retort that the savage aerial bombing campaign against civilian targets such as hospitals and shelters has nothing to do with counter-terrorism. The United Nations Security Council has met numerous times to address the tragedy, to no avail. This past weekend’s emergency session of the Security Council was no exception.

On October 8th, France and Spain, with the strong backing of the Obama administration, introduced a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council demanding a full cessation of all hostilities, including an end to all aerial bombardments over Aleppo, as well as the provision of immediate, safe and unhindered humanitarian access. Russia introduced its own competing draft.  While there was a fair amount of overlap between the two drafts, the Russian draft omitted any reference to the cessation of aerial bombings and revived the idea of modest weekly 48 hour humanitarian pauses in fighting. It also insisted on the need to verifiably separate “moderate opposition forces from ‘Jabhut Al-Nusra’ as a key priority,” which Russia has accused the United States of failing to accomplish.

Russia vetoed the French-Spanish draft resolution. The Russian draft failed to get the necessary majority of Security Council members to go along with it. Acrimony filled the air with charges and counter-charges assigning blame for the Syrian tragedy and the failure once again of the Security Council to take any decisive action. Meanwhile, civilians continue to die in Aleppo.

Russia’s military intervention on the side of the Syrian regime has surely tipped the balance in Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s favor at a horrendous price suffered by thousands of innocent victims, including little children. However, it was President Obama who allowed the situation in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa to spiral out of control in the first place, without even a trace of self-reflection on what he might have done wrong.

The disaster in Syria will likely top Barack Obama’s foreign policy legacy, even though Obama so badly wants the Paris Agreement on climate change to be his most long-lasting foreign policy legacy achievement. Indeed, Obama is so hung up on climate change as his number one foreign policy initiative that he actually blames climate change, which he is resolved to begin reversing, as having “contributed to the unrest and the Syrian civil war.” This is an example, according to former U.S. Army Gen. Robert Scales, of “politically-correct imaginings” and “politically-correct theories inserted into a battle plan” that “might well extend war needlessly and get soldiers killed.”

Obama’s solution to the refugee crisis resulting from the Syrian catastrophe is also a politically-correct plan with a potentially dangerous outcome. Obama is allowing thousands of Syrian refugees into the country without proper vetting to determine first who they are and what they believe. And he is not doing so to help save persecuted religious minorities such as Christians and Yazidis from genocide. Out of a total of 12,587 Syrian refugees the Obama administration admitted to the United States during the just-ended fiscal year for resettlement in communities throughout the country, 98.2 percent (12,363) are Sunni Muslims. Only 0.5 percent (68) are Christians and 0.19 percent (24) are Yazidis. Considering that ISIS and al Qaeda members are Sunni Muslims themselves, such an exceedingly high proportion of Sunni Muslim refugees admitted into the country, versus the truly persecuted religious minorities, almost guarantees that some Islamist terrorists will slip through the cracks.

Obama’s fundamental error all along has been to empower the Islamists he believes the United States could work with. He paved the way for enriching Syria’s principal ally in the region, Iran. Very shortly after his apology speech in Cairo to the Muslim world on June 4, 2009, Obama backed the mullahs in Iran, ignoring the pleas for American moral support from millions of dissidents marching peacefully in the streets of Tehran and other Iranian cities. They were being beaten and worse as they protested the rigged “election” of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Obama then proceeded to acquiesce to virtually every demand the Islamic theocracy made to secure his nuclear deal with Iran. Thousands of Iranian-backed fighters, likely paid for in part by funds made available to Iran’s government as a result of Obama’s appeasement nuclear pact, have been converging on Aleppo to help the Syrian regime in its all-out assault on rebel-controlled portions of the city.

Obama also supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East. To try and topple secular dictators, he helped arm so-called “moderate” rebels in Libya and Syria without careful vetting. Many of them either willingly, or were forced, to join the jihadist terrorist groups ISIS and al Nusra. ISIS gained strength in Syria and Iraq after Obama’s precipitous withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops from Iraq in 2011. Obama’s disastrous decision that same year to intervene militarily in Libya to overthrow Muammar al-Qaddafi, without any concrete plan for the day after, resulted in a failed state and Islamist strongholds from which the Libyan-based Islamists sent jihadists and arms to their jihadist brethren in Syria.

While Obama’s series of disastrous mistakes helped strengthen the Islamists in Syria on both sides of the conflict, he allowed Russian President Vladimir Putin to get the upper hand in Syria, which is playing out today in Aleppo and elsewhere.

It was not always this way. When Putin returned to the presidency in 2012, he did not display an intent to deploy Russian troops or warplanes in or around Syria immediately to help Assad against the rebel forces trying to overthrow him. Obama had decided against any major military intervention in Syria to help the rebels, who, indeed, were almost impossible to vet properly and were saturated with jihadist elements, but allowed the provision of some covert aid to the so-called “moderate” rebels without any apparent interference by Russia. More significantly, in his infamous declaration of a "red line" against the use of chemical weapons in 2012, the Obama risked the credibility of the U.S. if he did not follow through. And that is exactly what happened: Obama had warned the Syrian regime that the U.S. would take direct military action if it used chemical weapons against the Syrian people. Yet, when it appeared a year later that Assad had crossed Obama’s red line with the Syrian military force’s use of sarin gas that took the lives of nearly 1500 people, Obama drew back from his threat. Obama allowed Putin to bail him out of enforcing the red line with a face-saving agreement stipulating the removal and destruction of the Assad regime’s designated stockpiles of chemical weapons. The Obama administration opted to use the UN Security Council to unanimously endorse the agreement worked out, with Assad’s consent, between the United States and Russia. The agreement was to be implemented on an accelerated timetable, with monitoring by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Removal and destruction of the Assad regime’s designated stockpiles of chemical weapons were used as cover for the Assad regime to step up its attacks on civilians with conventional weapons, and jihadist terrorists gained control over swathes of territory. Moreover, Assad still has some chemical weapons, which he has allegedly used against civilians since the passage of the UN Security Council chemical weapons resolution.

Putin in the meantime used a variety of tactics, including bait and switch negotiations and the cynical use of the UN, to buy time in order to build up Russia’s own military forces in the region. President Obama, in turn, played right into Putin’s hands. Obama gave up the military leverage he had in 2013 to target specifically and destroy Assad’s warplanes and airfields when Assad crossed Obama’s red line.  Russia was not then in a position to run interference for Assad militarily. Russia’s strong military build-up since that time has changed the military equation – and, by extension, the balance of diplomatic leverage -- to Assad’s and Russia’s advantage. Russia bought the time necessary to become the Syrian regime’s full partner in relentless air attacks leading up to the horrors now unfolding daily in eastern Aleppo.

Sadly, any real viable diplomatic solution to the five-year-plus Syrian conflict, which has taken hundreds of thousands of lives, displaced millions of people, and precipitated a refugee crisis of historic proportions, is further away than ever. In short, President Obama's legacy in the Middle East consists of a revitalized Iran, a Russian presence at a level not seen for over four decades and an unstable environment in which jihadist terrorists have thrived. Obama has risked importing the ensuing chaos into this country by admitting thousands of unvetted refugees.

How (and When) We Entered Cold War II - Andy Logar

by Andy Logar

--------

On Christmas Day, 1991, the world was delivered the most wonderful gift: the bloodless fall of the Soviet Union. The hammer and sickle were lowered for the last time from atop of the Kremlin, to be replaced by the pre-revolutionary Russian tricolor, signaling victory of democratic capitalism over totalitarian communism. Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union; Boris Yeltsin remained as president of the new Confederation of Independent States (CIS), and the Cold War, which had lasted over 45 years, had finally ended . After 70 years of oppressive communism, Russians could breathe a sigh of relief and, looking Westward, wistfully say: "We're all democrats now."

Alas, while many were justifiably celebrating this epochal transition, events were already taking place months prior that were destined to gradually and totally nullify a Christmas gift of nothing less than providential proportions. Indeed, the prospect of an age of peace and goodwill, with strong GDP growth spurred by diversion of resources to domestic capital formation and productivity gains, benefiting both East and West, proved a mere chimera.

On February 9, 1990, almost two years before the collapse of the USSR, the U.S. secretary of state, James Baker, made a verbal commitment to Mikhail Gorbachev that in exchange for Soviet cooperation in the reunification of Germany and NATO membership, the U.S. could make "ironclad guarantees" that there would not be "one inch" of eastward NATO expansion thereafter. Based on this guarantee, never formalized in writing but backed by ample documentation from U.S. archives, Gorbachev acceded to German reunification talks, with formal reunification actually taking place on August 31, 1990. However, irrespective of promises to Gorbachev during the previous months, the George H.W. Bush administration had been under considerable, mounting pressure to nevertheless expand NATO – while concurrently attempting to allay Russian fears of such a development.

A brief overview of Russia's long, turbulent, and often bloody history is in order.

Russia is vast – the largest country in the world, encompassing an area about 1.8 times the size of the U.S. It is rich in natural resources, inclusive of arable land, but with very low population density and with no defensible natural borders, the very lack of which explaining the seeming Russian paranoia concerning NATO expansion. Russia suffered multiple invasions over the centuries by the Mongols, Tatars, Swedes, Poles, French, and Germans. Thus, it is understandable that Russia would be concerned about NATO moving into the buffer zone provided by former satellite states.

Throughout the 1990s, Russia experienced great difficulties in transitioning to a free-market economy. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, it is mind-boggling that America didn't have the foresight to offer the floundering former adversary a helping hand akin to the post-war Marshall Plan – so effective in rebuilding Germany and Europe. Such an "investment" would have paid rich dividends. Instead, pressure continued to grow to expand NATO to include East European countries, a movement primarily driven by American defense industry lobbyists. Defense expenditures had been dropping in the early 1990s and were projected to drop precipitously in subsequent years, placing major defense contractors in severe financial jeopardy.

In 1993, deputy defense secretary William Perry cautioned defense industry leaders of additional defense budget cuts and urged mergers, downsizings, and restructurings. The situation was so critical that the Pentagon, to ease what promised to be a difficult transition period, offered reimbursements for forthcoming industry "restructuring costs." A number of mergers quickly came about – one creating Lockheed-Martin, the largest arms manufacturer in the world, whose CEO, Norman R. Augustine, just happened to be a member of the Defense Policy Advisory Committee on trade – advising the secretary of defense on arms export policies.

Since the expansion of NATO promised financial salvation to the defense industry in increasingly difficult financial straits, one may safely surmise that Norman R. Augustine supported expansion enthusiastically because the eastward NATO expansion would encompass former Soviet Bloc countries, which would have to modernize and convert military equipment to meet NATO standards. The associated defense spending would be in the many tens of billions of dollars for a period of years – much of it going to the American defense contractors. It was the prospect of lucre, not the search for additional "security," that gave the impetus to NATO expansion.

But the average Russian could understandably have asked, "Expand NATO? Against whom?"
That was an evocative question, as evidenced by the fact that on December 20, 1991, just a few days before the dissolution of the USSR, Boris Yeltsin had written to NATO to express the desire for Russia to join in the future. This was a breath-taking development: the leader of democratized Russia, member of the former Soviet Union, and NATO adversary – and the raison d'ĂȘtre for NATO's formation – expressed a desire to join that very alliance whose sole purpose had been to keep the former USSR at bay.

Yeltsin's expressed desire to join NATO was no ploy: though Boris Yeltsin had been a Communist Party member for most of his career, he eventually wholeheartedly embraced free-market reforms and democracy. Such a head of state, leading a democratizing Russia, would have proven a godsend for a relatively frictionless NATO expansion and should thus have warranted an expedited NATO membership for Russia. To wit, as early as 1993, to prove goodwill and gain acceptance, and perhaps in need of hard currency, Yeltsin's Russia offered the U.S. Navy its crown jewel – the supersonic anti-ship missile, the SS-N-22 Sunburn. Incredibly, the Clinton administration turned down the offer – but China and Iran did not. The Sunburn and its variants remain essentially unmatched and unstoppable.

Though NATO wasn't to offer Russia NATO membership, it offered something less robust – membership in the Partnership for Peace (PfP). The PfP was a new program under NATO by which former Eastern Bloc nations could work with NATO on an individualized basis, coordinating defense related issues, civil-military exercises and cooperation, disaster response, environmental issues, etc. But it was not a full voting NATO membership – a fact hardly missed by Russia. Russia joined in1994, but not without expressing disappointment with the terms it would be bound by.

Concurrently, and essentially throughout the 1990s, lobbyists for the defense industry were working hard on behalf of various defense contractors, donating generously – some $33 million – to senatorial election campaigns in the hope of favorable votes on NATO expansion. The 1996 presidential election year politics also entered the picture, with President William Clinton, in a speech made in Detroit just weeks before the election and courting the Polish vote, indicating that NATO would admit the first of its new members, meaning Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, by 1999. He added that Russia should not worry because this would "advance the security of everyone." But Russia did worry, and understandably so. Russians such as Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and Putin objected most emphatically because this expansion clearly violated the "ironclad" guarantees given by secretary of state James Baker – but this was to no avail.

Collectively, mercenary and political efforts proved successful. On May 1, 1998, the Senate voted overwhelmingly for NATO expansion. The vote was 80 for, 19 against, one absentee. George Kennan, architect of the West's successful Cold War containment policy, was appalled: "I think it is the beginning of a new cold war[.] ... I think it is a tragic mistake. There was no reason for this whatsoever. No one was threatening anybody else[.]" Warning klaxons must have gone off throughout the Kremlin's walls at the prospect of the disappearance of the cordon sanitaire formed by the member states of the now dissolved Warsaw Pact, which had provided Russia a strategic buffer zone to its borders.

The growing Russian suspicion that the West and NATO were not to be trusted was soon vindicated. On March 12, 1999, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland were admitted to full NATO membership. Just twelve days later, March 24, 1999, NATO launched "Operation Allied Force," the 78-day bombing of Yugoslavia (Serbia, essentially), without approval of the U.N. Security Council, without a legitimate casus belli, and against a sovereign nation that posed no threat to members of the alliance.

Russians may well have thought, "We're next."

NATO bombings caused tens of billions of dollars of infrastructure damage to a nation recovering from decades of communism and the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians. It forced the Serbs to give up their ancient lands to an exploding Kosovo population of Muslims – many of whom were illegal immigrants. Though NATO would subsequently never concede that its attack was unjustified – in part, no doubt, fearing having to pay billions in reparations – investigative journalist Daniel Pearl's front-page article in the WSJ, December 31, 1999, would leave no doubt that America and NATO had been soundly duped by Muslim Kosovars and the KLA. This was later unequivocally affirmed by the former U.N. commander in the Balkans, Canadian General Lewis MacKenzie.

In 1914, Russia rushed troops to aid fellow Slav and coreligionist Serbia when she was unjustly attacked by Austria, triggering WWI. However, the NATO 1999 attack on Serbia found Russia prostrate, her economy and military in shambles. A once powerful Russia had to endure the humiliation of offering little more than to vigorously protest NATO's unprovoked attack. But the die was cast – there would be no reconciliation with NATO, which in Russian minds had turned aggressor. Boris Yeltsin resigned at the end of 1999, months before his term was up, appointing Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as president pending the 2000 elections; we've had an adversarial relation with Putin's Russia ever since. NATO's attack on Serbia triggered Cold War II, and where that will lead, only time will tell.

Thus, the Christmas gift of 1991 that promised peace, security and economic growth for Europe, Russia, and America was totally squandered. Western parochial interests, narrow perspectives, mercenary motives, and a political calculus aided and abetted by an indolent, woefully uncritical American press pushed Russia right back behind another iron curtain – for no justifiable reason. And the real, lingering, underlying, and ironic tragedy is that Russia, Europe, and America could have been natural allies – culturally, economically, and strategically – against China and Iran. Instead, truly vacuous Western geopolitics has America and Europe facing the hardening alliance among Russia, China, and Iran. How could we have erred so badly?

Kaine Opposes Death Penalty, But Embraces Theology that Idolizes Mass-Murderers - Humberto Fontova

by Humberto Fontova

The disturbing ideology the vice presidential nominee credits with changing his life.

A “dumb jock” surprises no one. It’s part of our comic folklore. So when Colin Kaepernick wears a Fidel Castro t-shirt while denouncing “oppression,” we snicker, eye-roll, and move on.

So this imbecile of a pro football quarterback, while condemning oppression against “people of color,” promotes a Stalinist dictator who jailed and tortured political prisoners at a higher rate than Stalin himself during the Great Terror—including the most black political prisoners in the modern history of the Western Hemisphere. So what?

A “moronic rap-singer” seems pretty standard. So when Jay-Z sports his Che Guevara t-shirt and croons, “I’m like Che Guevara with a bling on,” we snicker, face-palm and move on. So what if Mr. BeyoncĂ© idolizes a Stalinist who declared that the "Negro is indolent and spends his money on frivolities and drink, whereas the European is forward-looking, organized and intelligent…The Negro has maintained his racial purity by his well known habit of avoiding baths.” Big deal.

Tim Kaine, on the other hand, graduated from Harvard Law School and is running for Vice President of the United States. So when he claims to oppose the death penalty while concurrently claiming that the “liberation theology” he imbibed from Castroite priests in Honduras “turned his life around” the standard snicker and face-palm won’t suffice.  Instead, Tim Kaine’s useful idiocy strikes some of us as a more serious issue than the standard useful idiocy espoused by so many celebrities.

The comradeship between Liberation Theology and Che Guevara is such that some of the cheekier proponents of this Catholic heresy (as denounced by Pope Paul II himself) depict an iconographic “Chesucristo” with Christ impersonating Che Guevara in the famous t-shirt/emblem.

“I consider Fidel Castro to be a person inspired and led by the Holy Spirit…Also, I like the sayings of Che Guevara, another Marxist saint [italics added], who gave his life for the poor guided by the Spirit of Jesus[.]”

Thus spaketh Jesuit Father James Carney, a founder of Liberation Theology whom Tim Kaine made it a point to meet and confer with while on his “life forming” mission in Central America.

“Certainly we execute!” boasted Che Guevara to the UN General Assembly Dec. 1964.  “And we will continue executing as long as it is necessary!” Those executions (murders, actually; execution implies a judicial process) had reached about 16,000 by the time of Che Guevara’s boast, the equivalent, given the relative populations, of over half a million executions in the U.S. (This figure comes from The Black Book of Communism, written by French scholars and published in English by Harvard University Press, neither outfit exactly a bastion of right-wing Cuban exiles with an ax to grind.)

Used to be that casual references to Che Guevara by politicians and celebrities were shrugged off, when not actually applauded. Time magazine, after all, in their 1999 issue hailing “The 100 Most Important People of the Century,” proclaimed Che Guevara among the “Heroes and Icons of the Century” alongside Mother Theresa and Rosa Parks. Few complaints were heard at the time.

But more recently something terrible happened to Communist agents of influence. A book was released that made, with thorough documentation, the incurable doofus, sadist and epic idiot known as Che Guevara not only an object of scorn, but of ridicule.

Worse still, the book -- while getting kudus from conservative superstars on Fox News and from Glenn Beck, etc. -- was also translated into several languages and received international acclaim everywhere from Warsaw to Sao Paolo Brazil.

Worse still, the author was invited by the future chairwoman of the House Committee on Foreign Relations to present his blockbuster book to powerful lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Many of these were so impressed by the eye-opening and thoroughly documented revelations in the book that it strengthened their resolve to maintain the already fabulously successful Cuba embargo.

Indeed, among the delighted recipients of signed copies of the blockbuster book at this important event was Rep. Dan Burton, the very author with Jesse Helms of the phenomenally successful Cuba embargo (also known as the Helms-Burton Act).

More infuriating still, the Young America's Foundation (YAF) then picked up the book’s theme, sponsoring “No Che Days” on campuses nationwide and promoting the author on the college speaking circuit to spread the truth about Che Guevara.

The scoundrel of an author had turned Alinsky’s own formula against Alinskyites.

“Humberto Fontova’s books shamelessly libel our Revolution’s founders,” shrieked Cuba’s blindsided, shocked and outraged media. “The terms 'scoundrel' and 'traitor' should precede every mention of Humberto Fontova,” blared Cuba’s KGB-founded and mentored media organ Cubadebate.

At any rate, for a potential U.S. Vice President, the disconnect between opposing capital punishment and embracing the theology of mass-murderers is bad enough. There was a day, however, when most Americans would also be concerned that a potential Chief Executive of their nation might embrace a theology whose guiding secular lights proclaimed that:

“War against the U.S. is my true destiny.” (Fidel Castro, April 1958.)

“The U.S. is a vulture preying on humanity!” (Fidel Castro, May 1959.)

“Of course I knew the missiles in Cuba were nuclear-armed. That’s precisely why I urged Khrushchev to launch them against the U.S.!” (Fidel Castro to Robert Mc Namara, October 1992.)

“The U.S. is the great enemy of mankind!” (Che Guevara, 1961.)

“Against those hyenas (Americans) there is no option but extermination.” (Che Guevara, 1961.)

“We must keep our hatred (against the U.S.) alive and fan it to paroxysm.” (Che Guevara, 1965.)

“If the nuclear missiles had remained (in Cuba) we would have fired them against the heart of the U.S. including New York City. The victory of socialism is well worth millions of atomic victims.” (Che Guevara, 1962.)

Every item and quote above thoroughly documented in these internationally–published and acclaimed books.

Guess Who Is Helping Islamists to Oppress Women? - Thomas Quiggin

by Thomas Quiggin

Why Canada's Minister of Immigration should be accepting an award from an individual whose own organization (ICNA) openly advocates violence against women is not clear.

  • Why Canada's Minister of Immigration should be accepting an award from an individual whose own organization (ICNA) openly advocates violence against women is not clear. Minister Hajdu, despite her role as Minister for the Status of Women in Canada, has remained silent on this issue despite being made aware of it directly.
  • Not only did the child services department do nothing to help the 1400 girls being raped and forced into prostitution, in fact she (and others) went out of their way to silence anyone who tried to speak out. Rather than face the fact that a problem of mass rape existed, Joyce Thacker played a role in the cover-up.
  • Canada's Prime Minister Trudeau has declared himself to be a "feminist" and says he is committed to increasing the role of women in society. However, he recently visited a gender-segregated mosque in Ottawa, the imam of which is part of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), placed on a list of designated terrorist organizations by the United Arab Emirates in 2014.
  • Ironically, the City of Ottawa has other mosques which are modern and humanist, but the Prime Minister has never chosen to visit one of them.
Advocating violence against women and other misogynist practices are increasingly being accepted by individuals who identify themselves as "feminists" and "female leaders."

The process of normalizing Islamist misogyny is well underway while so-called feminists remain silent on issues such as wife beating, child marriages, female genital mutilation and "forced suicides."

For current feminists, it appears as though political correctness and fantasizing that they are "social justice warriors" outweighs the rights of women, especially brown women.

When it comes to the issue of opposing violence against women, feminists are as silent as beaten wives. Nothing - including the advocacy of wife beating, pedophiliac sex acts with nine-year-old girls and the generalized oppression of women - can draw feminists into the debate on the role of women under the Islamist ideology that is prevalent in Canada and the USA.

Premier Katherine Wynne of Ontario (population 13.6 million) recently visited the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), along with Education Minister Mitzie Hunter. They met on August 26, 2016 with female members of the Islamic Circle North America Sisters (ICNA Canada) in Scarborough. The ICNA directly advocates misogynist positions such as wife beating, the taking of slave girls and the position that women are, overall, inferior to men. ICNA also notes that Islamic women have been "emancipated" from the obligation of earning their own livelihood. Therefore, women can be kept at home and cannot leave the house without the permission of the husband.

Quite alarmingly, the Premier of Ontario did not criticize the organization or its heavily misogynistic beliefs. Rather she publicly claimed to have been "honoured" to have been there. The Minister of Education, Ms Hunter, appears to have remained silent on her views concerning this visit.

The Minister of the Status of Women, Patty Hajdu, for the federal government of Canada does not appear to have any problem with those advocating violence against women, either. Her cabinet colleague, Minister John McCallum, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, received an award for his "outstanding service" from the Canadian Council of Imams. The chairperson of this group is Dr. Iqbal Al-Nadvi, who is also the Amir of ICNA. Why the Minister of Immigration should be accepting an award from an individual whose own organization (ICNA) openly advocates violence against women is not clear. Minister Hajdu, despite her role as Minister for the Status of Women in Canada, has remained silent on this issue despite being made aware of it directly.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie of Mississauga has repeated allowed Hizb ut Tahrir (HT), a leading Islamist organization, to use city-owned property in Mississauga to hold conferences. In addition to stating that democracy is not compatible with Islam and that all Canadian soldiers are war criminals, HT is running an education campaign to teach women about "women's rights." To HT, women's rights are a Western concept and Islamic women should be aware of their obligation under sharia law. Ironically, the City of Mississauga withdrew permission (once) for Hizb ut Tahrir to have a meeting on city-owned property. Gerry Townsend, the CEO of Mississauga Living Arts Centre, confirmed the cancellation explaining that "there has been a bit of publicity about this organization." The meeting, it seems was not cancelled because HT is misogynist or listed as a terrorist group in multiple countries, but rather because of "publicity." Other meetings carried on without incident.

Member of Parliament Iqra Khalid is another woman who maintains silence in the face of the advocacy of violence against women. Prior to being a Member of Parliament, Ms. Khalid was the head of the Muslim Student Association at York University. In 2015, the same York University Muslim Student Association was handing out books for Islam Awareness Week. According to a book handed out, wife-beating is permissible under certain circumstances and some women enjoy being beaten because they are submissives. Ms. Khalid, who has close ties to the Islamic Society of North America and others, has not spoken out against the violence advocated by her former student association, the ICNA, the ISNA or any other such Islamist organization.

Perhaps the most disturbing example of all, however, is Joyce Thacker of the United Kingdom. She was the £130,000-a-year Strategic Director of the City of Rotherham's children's services department for five years. During that time, the ongoing rapes, drugging and enslavement of eleven to fourteen-year-old girls carried on in Rotherham. Not only did the child services department do nothing to help the 1400 girls being raped and forced into prostitution, in fact she (and others) went out of their way to silence anyone who tried to speak out. The reason for the enforced silence over a period of years was later identified in the official UK government report as "institutionalized political correctness." The rapists were primarily identified as Pakistani/Kashmiri/Muslims and the victims were identified as being primarily white girls. Rather than face the fact that a problem of mass rape on a wartime level existed, Joyce Thacker played a role in the cover-up.

The most interesting role of all, however, is that being played by Canada's Prime Minister Trudeau. He has declared himself to be a "feminist" and says he is committed to increasing the role of women in society. However, he recently visited (September 2016) a gender-segregated mosque in Ottawa. Female Members of Parliament who attended with him had to enter by a side door and sit in the segregated area. The imam of the mosque is part of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS), according to the mosque's own website. This organization was placed on a list of designated terrorist organizations by the United Arab Emirates in 2014. More interestingly, a review of the teaching and reading material of the mosque in early 2016 revealed a disturbing fact. The study noted that "It is not the presence of extremist literature in the mosque libraries that is worrisome. The problem is that there was nothing but extremist literature in the mosque libraries."

Worse, the Prime Minister also stated: "...as I look at this beautiful room — sisters upstairs — everyone here, (I see) the diversity we have just within this mosque, within the Islamic community, within the Muslim community in Canada."

How this be seen as anything other than an attempt at normalizing the segregation of women? Ironically, the City of Ottawa has other mosques which are modern and humanist, but the Prime Minister has never chosen to visit one of them.

What are the possible reasons for such practices whereby feminists and major feminist organizations refuse to speak out on violence against women? Most leading feminists are still white, as are many female leadership figures. Many victims of misogyny and abuse are brown:
  • Brown women, not known to be a voting block, therefore have little to no influence in the corridors of elected power;
  • Women, especially those in positions of power such as Premier Wynne, Minister Hajdu, and Mayor Crombie of Mississauga can be misogynistic notwithstanding that they are female; and
  • In many cases, the forces of political correctness and fantasy of seeing themselves as "Social Justice Warriors" place the rights of Islamist males over the rights of Muslim and non-Muslim females.

Munich’s Schmock restaurant closes due to Israel-hate - Benjamin Weinthal

by Benjamin Weinthal

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement has for years held events targeting Israel in facilities subsidized by the Munich Municipality.

The Jewish owner of Munich’s Schmock Israeli restaurant announced on its website its closure after 16 years because of rising anti-Semitism in the Bavarian capital.

Florian Gleibs pulled the plug on the restaurant last week because of the mushrooming anti-Israel agitation in the city since the IDF’s 2014 Operation Protective Edge against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“People from the educated, well-off middle class have decided to hold me responsible as a representative of Israel, according to the motto: ‘What you people are doing is nothing different than what we Germans did back then [in the Holocaust],’” he wrote.

In response to anti-Israel tirades, he placed a large sign in the restaurant’s window reading: “We are not involved with politics.” The hostility toward him and his restaurant continued, Die Welt reported.

Gleibs, 45, is not Israeli. He attended a boarding school in Haifa for two years when he was younger.

He told Die Welt he “sees antisemitism as more emotional now than before [the 2014 war].” Gleibs said he personally experienced “people on the streets screaming ‘Jew, Jew, cowardly swine, come here and fight alone.’” According to the Die Welt article, “antisemitism is, in truth, disguised as criticism of Israel.”

Markus SchĂ€fert, the spokesman for Bavaria’s domestic intelligence agency – the rough equivalent of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) – said “anti-Zionist antisemitism pretends to criticize Israel but, in fact, rejects Israel’s existence.”

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement for years held events targeting Israel in facilities subsidized by the Munich Municipality.

Mayor Dieter Reiter has since late November 2015 canceled a series of BDS events in city-funded buildings.

A talk that month by Christoph Glanz, a leading German BDS activist, in the city-funded Gasteig cultural center, triggered sharp criticism from the Jewish community and Israel’s consulate in Munich.

Glanz is widely considered an anti-Semite. He said the allegation is “absurd.” He has commented positively about liquidating the Jewish state and relocating Israel to the southwestern German state of Baden-WĂŒrttemberg.

Charlotte Knobloch, the head of Munich’s Jewish community and a Holocaust survivor, sharply criticized the BDS event in the Gasteig. Knobloch took Glanz to task at the time for his hatred of Jews and Israel: “The BDS campaign disguises the socially unacceptable,” Knobloch, told The Jerusalem Post, adding, “It has modernized the Nazi slogan ‘Don’t buy from Jews!’ by demanding, ‘Don’t buy from the Jewish state.’” Gleibs plans to reopens Schmock as Laotian restaurant. He owns two additional eateries in Munich. His restaurant Meschugge will continue to serve some of the dishes from the now-defunct Schmock.

Russia This Week – October 5 - 10, 2016 - MEMRI

by MEMRI

The past week witnessed a further deterioration in Russia-US relations, prompting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeir to call the situation "more dangerous" than the Cold War

Russia This Week is a weekly review by the MEMRI Russian Media Studies Project, covering the latest Russia-related news and analysis from media in Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe.

The past week witnessed a further deterioration in Russia-US relations, prompting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeir to call the situation "more dangerous" than the Cold War (Dw.com, October 8) citing the tension over Ukraine and Syria and the lapse in nuclear material cooperation. Such cooperation had always been an area respected by both sides during the Cold War and was insulated from clashes in other areas.

Cartoon Of The Week

Zakharova Dixit
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova is one of the most-quoted Russian officials. She is known for using colorful language when describing Russian foreign policy in her weekly press briefings. The following are Zakharova's quotes of the week:

(Source: Facebook.com/maria.zakharova.167)

"We are facing another round of the anti-Russian information campaign in connection with the Syrian crisis, and this is not for the first time... We are currently facing the extreme, even extremist, round of this campaign. It's not even a campaign, it's hysteria in which everyone is involved: the UN Security Council, news conferences by government officials, newspapers, TV, articles, heads of foreign ministry agencies, observers, and others. This time, they are trying to make us look like a bloodthirsty aggressor, an outlaw. On September 29, The New York Times published an article branding Russia 'an outlaw state' and saying that Russia kills hundreds of innocent children and women in Syria."
(Mid.ru, October 6)

"We should react more calmly to what is now being said [in the US] because many statements are being made solely in line with heated pre-election passions. They don't reflect any short-term Middle East strategy, not to mention a long-term strategy. It appears that these spurts are due to the need to add some fire to the election campaign."

Responding to US Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Mike Pence's comments that the "Russian bear never dies, it just hibernates," Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page:
"Attention! It is my coming out today. Hello, people! I am the Russian everlasting bear that never dies but hibernates from time to time. I am not alone. There are lots of Russian bears like me. I am even married to such a bear and we have a bushy daughter-bear. I eat honey and try to be funny.
"And I love you with all my Russian bear heart!"
(Facebook.com/maria.zakharova.167, October 5)

Quotes Of The Week:
During a press-conference, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council Ambassador Vitaly Churkin was asked the following question:

Q: "You have been very patient with us but it is still not clear in my mind, do you come to this press-conference with any sense of moral responsibility or do you regard Syria as just entirely disconnected from Russian foreign policy or Russian military policy? Do you have a sense of responsibility for what is happening in Eastern Aleppo?"

Churkin answered: "When you come clearer in your mind about what you want to ask, please ask me the question."

Tweet Of The Week:
Senator @Alexey_Pushkov: "Obama is concluding his second term by sharp degradation in the relations with Russia and tense relations with China. [He] deserves a Cold War, rather than a [Nobel] Peace prize."

In The News:
US Dixit – Kerry: Russian, Syrian Actions Beg For An Investigation Of War Crimes
On October 7, during a joint press conference with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, US State Secretary John Kerry said: "Russia and [Syrian] the regime owe the world more than an explanation about why they keep hitting hospitals and medical facilities and children and women. These are acts that beg for an appropriate investigation of war crimes. And those who commit these would and should be held accountable for these actions. They're beyond the accidental now – way beyond. Years beyond the accidental. This is a targeted strategy to terrorize civilians and to kill anybody and everybody who is in the way of their military objectives."
(State.gov, October 7)

US State Department's spokesperson John Kirby then explained: "[Kerry]'s the Secretary of State, he doesn't just toss words around for rhetorical exercises. You have seen his frustration build. You, yourself – all of you have seen his frustration build over the last several weeks. You heard what he said at the UN, called it like he saw it, that these were clear violations of international law. And today, he said that they begged for an appropriate investigation, and I think he meant every word of what he said. I'm not trying to parse here. I'm not trying to be – to dance around this thing, but the Secretary believes that what's happening is an abomination, is – obviously violates international law. We're talking, again – let's remember and let's remind people we're talking about hospitals and homes and businesses and innocent men and women and children."
(State.gov. October 7)

Russia Replies – Zakharova: 'Shouldn't We Just Turn Off Telephones In The Foreign Ministry?'
Commenting on Kerry's statements, Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page: "By making statements equating Russia's actions in Syria with war crimes, the US State Department should understand that this may all end with the national referendum in Russia with one question: 'Shouldn't we just turn off telephones in the Foreign Ministry?'"
(Tass.com, October 8)

Senator Alexey Pushkov said: "Kerry's accusations against Russia are not just rhetoric or an intimidation attempt. This is a preparation for the new round of sanctions against Russia - this time because of Syria."
(Twitter.com/Alexey_Pushkov, October 7)

UNSC: Russia Vetoes France's Resolution – Russia's Resolutions Receives The Minimum Number Of Votes
Russia vetoed a French-drafted UNSC resolution on Syria. France's resolution called for a complete cessation of the bombing in Aleppo, as well as military flights over the city. On the other hand, the Russian draft resolution failed to receive a minimum number of votes at the UNSC. Prior to the vote, Russia's Permanent Ambassador to the UN said: "Today we are participating in one of the most bizarre scenes in the history of the UN Security Council. We will vote on the two draft Council resolutions, and we are all well aware that neither of them will be accepted."

In another interview, Churkin said: "The French proposal is very hastily put together and I frankly believe that this is designed not to make progress and take the situation out of the current stalemate and not to help Staffan de Mistura but to cause a Russian veto which I will try to explain. It is unprecedented for the members of the Council to ask a permanent member of the Security Council to limit its own activities... the French draft as I explained before contains some elements which we think are really harmful...this is not a proposal, a draft which is right for adoption, as I say I have this suspicion that the real motive is to cause a Russian veto even though from the outset we were told by the French colleagues that this was not their intention. But unfortunately I have to get used to working under strange circumstances."

US-Russia Relations Heating Up – Zakharova: S-300 Anti-Aircraft Missiles Were Deployed In Syria To Counter US Cruise Missile Threats To Russian Forces
Russia's Defense Ministry informed that a battery of Russian S-300 air defense missile launchers has been transported to Syria. The news was confirmed by Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov: "Indeed, the Syrian Arab Republic received an S-300 anti-aircraft missile system. This system is designed to ensure the safety of the naval base in [Syrian city of] Tartus and ships located in the coastal area [in Syria]..." He added that it is unclear why the deployment of the S-300 caused such alarm in the West, stating that "the S-300 is a purely defensive system and poses no threat."
(Rt.com, October 4)

Igor Konashenkov (Source: Tass.ru)

In an interview with the RIA TV channel on October 7, Zakharova said: "the S-400 has been deployed there (in Syria) for a long time - everyone treated that normally and no one said that was a show of [force]. Those systems have been there for a long time - and everyone, i think, knew it. The S-300 appeared in Syria after there were leaks from American experts, close to the American establishment, regarding a possible targeting of Syrian airfields by cruise missiles. Those leaks were consistent and had some basis..."
(Ria.ru, October 7)

RIA Columnist: "If The US Chooses War - Russia Won't Be Able To Flee The  Fighting"
Commenting on possible US strikes against Syrian governmental military target, Konashenkov warned: "Any missile or air strikes on the territory controlled by the Syrian government will create a clear threat to Russian servicemen... Russian air defense system crews are unlikely to have time to determine in a 'straight line' the exact flight paths of missiles and then who the warheads belong to. And all the illusions of amateurs about the existence of 'invisible' [stealth technology] jets will face a disappointing reality." He also noticed that the Syrian army is equipped with quite effective systems such as S-200, as well as BUK systems. He then added that after the September 17 US striking of Syrian army positions in Dir-Az-Zour, Russia took all necessary precautions in order not to let such mistakes recur against Russian soldiers and infrastructure in Syria.

It is worth noting that Konashenkov recalled that Russia's bases in Hmeymim and Tartus were protected by S-400 and S-300 air defense systems, "whose range of operation may prove a surprise to any unidentified flying object."
(Ria.ru, October 6; Rt.com, October 6; Tass.com, 6)

In an article, titled "The dialectics of S-300 in Syria," Aleksandr Khrolenko, a columnist for RIA news, wrote: Russia will consider any strikes against Syrian governmental army as an attempt to sabotage the anti-terror operation in Syria with all that this implies. "I think, that sooner or later, the Americans will try to use force in various capacities. If the US chooses war - Russia won't be able to flee the fighting," Khrolenko wrote.

Russian Embassy Under Mortar Fire In Syria – Zakharova: 'The US Is Protecting Jabhat Al-Nusra By All Possible Means'
On October 3, the Russian embassy in Syria came under mortar fire. The Russian Foreign Ministry published a special statement accusing those "who, like the US, are provoking continued bloodshed in Syria by flirting with various militants and extremists."
(Mid.ru, October 4)

Commenting on the mortar attack druing her weekly press briefing, Zakharova said that there is a connection between the Russian embassy shelling in Damascus and Washington's threats. Zakharova stated: "We suspect a connection between this terrorist attack and the vague threat of attack recently passed on by Washington. It is indicative that the attack happened in the midst of a discussion to possibly supply the militants with man-portable air-defense systems and other military equipment that could be used from anywhere.

"We get the impression that our Western partners are forgetting that Jabhat al-Nusra (Jabhat Fateh al-Sham), ISIS, Jund al-Aqsa, Ahrar ash-Sham, Jaysh al-Islam and other similar groups are basically the same evolving Al-Qaeda that conducted the horrible terrorist attacks in the United States 15 years ago. Why do our American colleagues not remember that and why do they not remind their people about it on a daily basis at public events? It is beyond my understanding.

"The US is protecting Jabhat al-Nusra by all possible means. For the past two years, almost every day we hear tragic reports of American police killing ordinary citizens who only looked like they could hypothetically be a threat to the police or the public. Some police officers thought they were armed, the others thought they could be dangerous, etc. Those were ordinary people who were only suspected of being a threat. Now imagine that two or three people from Jabhat al-Nusra – so thoroughly protected by the US government – walk down the streets of Washington. Imagine what the police would do to those people if they walked down the street in Washington, Chicago or any US city looking the way they usually look. Nobody would have any doubt that those people clearly pose a threat to civilians. Then why is it that those people would be immediately destroyed in one geographic location with complete public support but in another location, they are presented as fighters for justice, as the moderate opposition, a group that is not yet on the genuine path to political resolution, a group that needs refinement but does not yet meet the high standards completely? It is a very strange approach."

Russia's Decision To Terminate The 2010 Implementing Agreement Between Rosatom And The US Department of Energy – Russian Foreign Ministry: 'We Can No Longer Trust Washington In A Sensitive Sphere'
On September 3, a Russian Presidential Executive Order suspended the 2000 U.S.-Russia agreement concerning the management and disposition of plutonium designated as no longer required for defense purposes and related cooperation (PMDA). On October 5, Russia adopted the decision to terminate the 2010 Implementing Agreement between the Russian State Corporation for Atomic Energy, Rosatom, and the US Department of Energy, concerning cooperation on feasibility studies of the conversion of Russian research reactors to use low-enriched uranium fuel. The Russian Foreign Ministry wrote: "This step follows the notification received from the United States in 2014 regarding the termination of civil nuclear energy cooperation with Russia, as well as other hostile steps and statements by the United States. As a result of these actions, we can no longer trust Washington in a sensitive sphere such as the modernization and safety of Russian nuclear power plants. If Russia makes the decision to convert particular research reactors to low-enriched nuclear fuel, we will conduct this work independently."

Russia's Suspension Of The 2013 Russian-US Agreement On Cooperation In Nuclear- And Energy-Related Scientific Research And Development
On October 5, Russia suspended the 2013 Russian-US Agreement on Cooperation in Nuclear- and Energy-Related Scientific Research and Development. The Russian Foreign Ministry explained: "This step was taken following the restrictions imposed by the United States on nuclear energy cooperation with Russia. In 2014, notification was received from Washington that the US was suspending nuclear energy cooperation with Russia in connection with the events in Ukraine. By their decision, the Americans effectively froze cooperation in science and technology in all areas specified in the Agreement and rendered impossible the implementation of projects in which both countries were interested. Under these circumstances, Russia is suspending the Agreement in response to the US's hostile actions..."

Deputy FM: The US Intelligence Is Trying To Recruit Agents Amongst Russian Diplomats
During an interview, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov talked about the "ongoing practice of US special services abducting Russians across the world." He also stated that the US administration is trying to use "hyped-up public concern about its representatives to conceal active espionage operations conducted under diplomatic cover." [1] Ryabkov then added:

"The situation facing Russian diplomats in the United States is, in fact, steadily deteriorating. Over the past two and a half years, there has been a clear increase in the number of attempts to recruit our officials, while US special services resort to the most unseemly methods to apply pressure, including threats against the well-being of family members. The smooth operation of our diplomatic missions is hindered by artificial difficulties in making official contacts and other contrived restrictions.

"Not long ago, Washington tightened regulations on the movement of Russian officials on US territory. Now the overwhelming majority of our representatives need to notify the State Department of their itinerary well in advance, without which they may not go anywhere. This runs counter to the rules that were jointly agreed on and were in effect for almost a quarter of a century. This will further undermine conditions for the development of ties as well as opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

"Unfortunately, this is precisely what the administration of Barack Obama has sought, to the accompaniment of rabid anti-Russian propaganda, especially since the adoption of the controversial sanctions-related 'Magnitsky Act'[2] in 2012. Nevertheless, Washington will not succeed in laying the blame at someone else's doorstep."

Turkey–Russia Relations
On October 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin is to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the World Energy Congress in Istanbul. On October 5, the two leaders had a phone conversation at the initiative of the Turkish side. The phone call focused on Turkish-Russian cooperation and the Syrian crisis.

Iskander – M In Kaliningrad Region
Russia deployed Iskander -M tactical missile systems in Kaliningrad region. The move sparked tension in the Baltic States. On October 8, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Konashenkov said: "By the way, nobody made a big secret out of the transportation of the system onboard the freighter Ambal. I'll tell more - one Iskander system was deliberately exposed prior to the shipment to an American intelligence satellite, which was on its trajectory above (the region) - that was made in order to clarify (check out) certain parameters of this satellite." He also added that the Russian side did not have long to wait since the US partners in their "exposure impulse" have confirmed everything (that the Russians needed).
(Ria.ru, October 8)

He also stated: "The Iskander ballistic missile system is mobile, as during the training process missile force units improve their skills year-round [which involves] covering major distances across Russian territory by various means: by air, by sea and by their own movement."

On another note, Putin transferred the Kaliningrad Region's governor, Yevgeny Zinichev, to another job, presumably on Zinichev's own request and appointed Regional Government Chairman Anton Alikhanov as Kaliningrad's new head.

[1] The US has charged with Russia with harassment of its diplomats both within Russia as well as throughout Europe. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau reported that other Western countries were encountering similar harassment. See: Cnn.com, July 28, 2016.
[2] In December 2012 the US Congress passed this act allowing the US to withhold visas and freeze assets of  Russian officials involved in human rights violations. Sergei Magnitsky was a Russian lawyer who discovered massive fraud by Russian tax and police officials. Rather than act on his charges, Russian officialdom arrested Magnitsky who died in custody, allegedly of torture and failure to receive medical care.

The Right to Mock - Douglas Murray

by Douglas Murray

There is nothing special about Islam that means it cannot be mocked. In fact, it would be a very good thing (both for Muslims and everyone else) if it were mocked rather more

  • Mohammed Shafiq was quoted in the Sun saying of Smith: "I think he should apologise immediately. Our faith is not to be mocked, our faith is to be celebrated and I think people will be offended."
  • Shafiq does not explain why his faith should not be mocked. Nor does he seem to know anything about the right of free people in free countries to do or say whatever we like about Islam or any other faith whenever we feel like it.
  • There is nothing special about Islam that means it cannot be mocked. In fact, it would be a very good thing (both for Muslims and everyone else) if it were mocked rather more.
  • But there in that sentence is the implicit threat again. All insist that their faith "should not be mocked." And for those who say they are moderates, and are presented as such by the press, it seems to be exceptionally useful that they do not have to be much more explicit than this.
  • But in this not-so-subtle intimidation do we not see precisely that thing which most worries the public? That despite what our politicians say, the allegedly vast chasm that separates the extremists from the "moderates" seems at times to be almost paper-thin.
If there is one question that most concerns the public around the question of radical Islam it is "What is the connection between the extremists and the moderates?" Leading politicians across the Western world have not been much help in answering this question, insisting as they do, that radical Islam has nothing to do with Islam and that the extremists are as far away from the moderates as it is possible to be. Yet the public senses that this is not the case.

Despite the amazing lack of public debate about the actual contours of the discussion, the public knows that something is not right about the analysis provided by Liberal politicians and others. Indeed, the public notices not only that there is some connection between the two (something Democrats in the U.S., among others, deny) but that the connection may be closer than anyone would like. A fine example of this was thrown up in the UK this week in the space of just 24 hours.

On Friday the London Evening Standard carried a story about the police launching a possible "hate crime" investigation into literature that the paper had discovered being handed out at a London mosque. The potential "hate crime" was not even the best known variety -- a mean Tweet or a nasty comment -- but the sort of thing we used to call "incitement." The literature being handed out at a mosque in Walthamstow consisted of a booklet which insisted that "any Muslim should kill" anyone who insults the Prophet of Islam. Those who insult the main man "must be killed," it repeated.

The pamphlet backed up this point of view with reference to classical Islamic law and explained that in the case of those who "insult" Mohammed, such as apostates who "deserve to be assassinated," it was not necessary to wait for any court or court judgement to rule. Better just to get on with it on your own, was the gist.

In a case that is becoming increasingly familiar to indigenous British people as much as it is to British Pakistanis, the booklet referred to the seminal case of Mumtaz Qadri, the Pakistani man who in 2011 murdered Salman Taseer, the governor of Pakistan's Punjab province. Qadri murdered Taseer because of the latter's support for the reform of Pakistan's strict Islamic blasphemy laws. The booklet explains that "all Muslims should support" the assassin Qadri and that even being what the publication calls "a big shot" like Taseer should not protect someone from being killed by any Muslim who feels like it.

Salman Taseer, pictured in the memorial poster at left, was the governor of Pakistan's Punjab province when he was murdered in 2011 by a radical Islamist, because of Taseer's support for the reform of Pakistan's strict Islamic blasphemy laws. Right: London police may be launching a "hate crime" investigation into a booklet being handed out at a London mosque, which explains that "all Muslims should support" Taseer's murderer.

The police are currently investigating the Dar-ul-Uloom Qadria Jilania mosque in Walthamstow, where the booklet was handed out, and would do well to look into the imam of the mosque, Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani, whose name and photograph are on the front of the booklet in question. Of course, the response of the political class in Britain is to ignore any and all such things. "Bad egg" or "one rotten apple" is probably the most the public will be able to expect from any politician, if one were forced to give any view at all on Mr Jilani, his pamphlet or his mosque. Yet the public reads stories like this and rightly wonders where people like Mr Jilani get their ideas from and how widely such ideas might be spread.

The following day (Saturday) readers of The Sun were able to learn of a British celebrity gymnast, Louis Smith, who had got drunk with friends at a wedding and made a video that appeared to have come back to haunt him. As the Sun headline read, "Has he got a screw Louis? Olympic ace Louis Smith accused of mocking Islam after yelling 'Allahu Akbar' and pretending to pray in boozy video." The video of drunken japery included Smith and a friend pulling a rug off a wall and shouting "Allahu Akbar" while the friend pretended to pray in a vaguely Islamic style. As the paper led the story,
"Olympics star and former Strictly Come Dancing winner Louis Smith has been accused of mocking Islam after appearing in a video with a mate drunkenly pretending to pray. The footage shows him with fellow gymnast Luke Carson yelling 'Allahu Akbar', an Islamic phrase meaning 'God is the greatest'."
It is hardly the most important news story of the year, and hardly involves any of the most important figures of our time. But the story will have been read by millions of readers and they will have noticed the reactions. First, that from a "security source" who tells the paper "Mocking religion is pretty foolish. In the case of Islam, it can also be quite a risky thing to do." And then the paper has the obligatory quote from an alleged "moderate Muslim," on this occasion one Mohammed Shafiq of a one-man organization called the "Ramadan Foundation." Mr Shafiq has previously been hailed in Britain for his apparently exceptional moral courage and bravery in coming out against the mass gang-rape of children. In 2013, he stood accused of attempting to get up a lynch-mob when the reformist Muslim Maajid Nawaz tweeted out an innocuous image that Shafiq insisted was offensive to all the world's Muslims.

Anyhow -- responding to the Louis Smith drunken video, the same Mohammed Shafiq was quoted in the Sun saying of Smith: "I think he should apologise immediately. Our faith is not to be mocked, our faith is to be celebrated and I think people will be offended." Shafiq does not explain why his faith should not be mocked. Nor does he seem to know anything about the right of free people in free countries to do or say whatever we like about Islam or any other faith whenever we feel like it. There is nothing special about Islam that means it cannot be mocked. In fact, it would be a very good thing (both for Muslims and everyone else) if it were mocked rather more. But there in that sentence is the implicit threat again. Less blatant than the threat against Maajid Nawaz, but very close indeed to the line used by the Walthamstow imam and the extremists who defend Mumtaz Qadri.

All insist that their faith "should not be mocked." And for those who say they are moderates, and are presented as such by the press, it seems to be exceptionally useful that they do not have to be much more explicit than this. Fortunately for them, there are other people willing to do the killing in countries such as Pakistan and occasionally in the West. The rest of us -- whether gymnasts on a night out or anyone else -- are simply expected to have learnt this by now. But in this not-so-subtle intimidation do we not see precisely that thing which most worries the public? That despite what our politicians say, the allegedly vast chasm that separates the extremists from the "moderates" seems at times to be almost paper-thin.

Douglas Murray, British author, commentator and public affairs analyst, is based in London, England.
