Israel Under Attack: Biden's Coup to Get Iran the Bomb - Guy Millière

by Guy Millière

Hat tip: Dr. Jean-Charles Bensoussan

Behind this subversion, it turns out, is none other than the U.S. State Department, which for years has reportedly been channeling funding to a "far left", "anti-Netanyahu" non-profit organization, the Movement for Quality Government (MQG) .

  • "U.S. support for demonstrations in Tel Aviv isn't about the future of Israel's judiciary. It's about handcuffing Israel while Iran gets the bomb." — Lee Smith, Tablet Magazine, March 2, 2023.

  • In reality, Iran's mullahs will most likely blackmail the Biden Administration for billions of dollars not to use their new bombs "on my watch", as then President Barack Obama put it in 2015. With a new administration, there can be a new blackmail.

  • The Palestinian Authority's "pay-for-slay" jobs-program, paid for by "over $200 million" fungible U.S. taxpayer dollars in funding reinstated by President Joe Biden, incentivizes and rewards the murder of Jews.

  • Abbas' Fatah faction boasted of carrying out 7,200 terror attacks in 2022 against Israel, while criticizing Hamas for not attacking Israel.

  • Many Israelis have no illusions anymore. They see that the Palestinian Authority incites Jew-hate, whips up terrorism and tells Arab children and adults that to be a martyr for Islam allows them direct access not only to paradise, but also to generous funds for the terrorists and their families.

  • Israelis can also see that the Biden Administration has continually made decisions hostile to Israel, including once again funding the Palestinian Authority without even requiring that it renounce terrorism. The Administration also brought back the goal of a "two-state solution": if a Palestinian state were to emerge, it could -- and most likely would -- be used as a launching pad from which to attack Israel, as promoted in the Palestinian "Phased Plan": Get whatever land you can, then use that to get the rest.

  • Mainly, Israelis saw that the Biden administration never gave up trying to enable to enable the mullahs' regime in Iran to have unlimited nuclear weapons -- all while the mullahs have made the genocidal destruction of Israel their overriding goal.

  • Accordingly, on November 1, 2022, millions of Israelis elected Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel's Prime Minister, heading a broad coalition government. The coalition also pledged to restore the balance between the Knesset and the Supreme Court.

  • In the United Kingdom, Parliament has the final say -- not the High Court. For the last 30 years, this has not been the situation in Israel.

  • In the 1990s, Israeli Supreme Court President Aharon Barak, declaring that "everything is justiciable," executed a "judicial revolution," through which the Court has arrogated virtually all political power, including the ability to override laws and even operational decisions by the Ministry of Defense and the IDF.

  • The government's proposed reforms would simply restore the checks and balances and the separation of powers that Israel had before Barak's "revolution."

  • Since Barak's tenure, Israel's Supreme Court and the Attorney General have become a self-selecting group, unelected by the public or their representatives. Their decisions, lacking a constitution, were increasingly based not on law but on their invented doctrine of "reasonableness" -- often resulting in "whatever I think is reasonable".

  • At present, Israel's Supreme Court, among other freewheeling entitlements, may overrule a quasi-constitutional Basic Law based on 'reasonableness"; accept petitions from anyone regardless of standing (even if the petitioner would not be directly affected by the outcome -- a provision that has resulted in a firehose of lawsuits by "concerned" non-governmental-organizations); and veto political appointments.

  • For years, many Israelis had gotten used to turning to the Supreme Court for favorable "final say" decisions that they were not able to obtain through the elected parliament, the Knesset. Overnight, they now find themselves losing their perch.

  • The new Israeli government has not violated any of the rules of Israeli democracy. In a democratic country that held a free and fair election, the one thing that does not seem democratic is to demand that the decision of the voters be overthrown.

  • Demonstrations continue, but even if 100,000 protestors turn out, it is still only a small number compared to the 2.4 million citizens who voted for Israel's new government.

  • Behind this subversion, it turns out, is none other than the U.S. State Department, which for years has reportedly been channeling funding to a "far left", "anti-Netanyahu" non-profit organization, the Movement for Quality Government (MQG) .

  • "Never mind that the justices have a conflict of interest since it is their powers the government's proposed reforms would check. Never mind that in a bid to prevent politicized judges and prosecutors from overturning the will of the voters, the law explicitly permits prime ministers to serve not only while standing trial, but even if convicted. And never mind that the charges against Netanyahu have fallen apart in Jerusalem District Court.... Since MQG's primary activity is subverting democracy in Israel by waging lawfare and sowing chaos in a bid to block democratically elected right-wing governments from fulfilling their pledges to voters, it's fairly clear that when MQG refers to 'democracy education,' it doesn't mean majority rule". — Caroline Glick, JNS, January 17, 2023.

  • Ironically, in Washington D.C., a "January 6th Committee", without due process -- no cross examination, no independent selection of members, no right to counsel, no exculpatory evidence -- pretended to "investigate" as criminal the very same activity that the Biden Administration is backing in Israel: trying to change the outcome of a free and fair election.

  • Israel is and will remain a very much a democracy – just as it was before Justice Aharon Barak arrogated virtually unlimited powers to its Supreme Court. Calls for uprisings and civil disobedience, combined with false accusations of "fascism" -- and the whole focus-group supermarket of pejoratives -- appear to be just sore-loser propaganda.

  • The demonstrations -- despite what the Biden Administration might wish -- are just the loud last gasp of upper-class "elites" who have been entrenched in powerful unelected positions for decades.

  • That all this undemocratic disruption being done in the name of "defending democracy" just makes matters worse. The reality, sadly, is quite the opposite.

  • At a time when terrorism has struck and with a U.S. administration unfriendly to Israel, it is revealing that professed friends of Israel can talk in such an irresponsible way. They speak of a threat to Israeli democracy? They are a threat to Israeli democracy.

  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Israel at the time of two of the Jerusalem terror attacks, rather than condemn them clearly and unambiguously, spoke mushily of a "horrifying surge in violence... we will be encouraging the parties to take steps to calm things down", as if Israel had been the one promoting violence.... He was giving a lesson in democracy to Prime Minister Netanyahu -- not Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who openly calls for Palestinians to murder Israelis. How thoughtful.

  • The Israeli government is trying to restore the democratic institutions that it used to have, of which it has been stripped.

  • The Israeli government is trying to prevent the murder of innocent Jews and to stop terrorist attacks. Those, however, do not appear to be the goals that everyone has.

  • What endangers the State of Israel or any nation is not a government dedicated to the safety of its citizens, but people who seem blind to the real dangers: whether from the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Iranian regime, the Chinese Communist Party.

  • The greatest danger comes from those who cling to the illusion that diplomacy without the credible threat of military consequences will have any effect. These irresponsible individuals seem to prefer avoiding conversation about such dangers, or else try to downplay them. It is much less frightening to talk about gender pronouns than China's preparations for war.

  • Iran must not be allowed to get the bomb -- "or maybe just a few".

"U.S. support for demonstrations in Tel Aviv isn't about the future of Israel's judiciary. It's about handcuffing Israel while Iran gets the bomb," writes Lee Smith in Tablet Magazine.

The world has learned a lot watching America's Middle East freedom agenda.... The first of these lessons is that when U.S. policymakers selectively deploy the rhetoric of democracy and human rights against target governments, their words are typically accompanied by practical measures to destabilize those governments, including U.S. allies....

"In reality, the maritime agreement was just the latest in a series of initiatives to realign U.S. interests with those of the terror regime in Tehran while alternately sweet-talking and threatening traditional U.S. allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia to fall into line...

"Netanyahu, however, is a problem for an administration still determined to reenter the nuclear deal from which Donald Trump withdrew... But there's no guarantee the famously cautious Netanyahu wouldn't launch an attack now, especially with a right-wing government at his back and the U.S. seemingly preparing to accept Iran as a member of the nuclear club, so long as the terror regime's capacity is limited to just one bomb, or maybe just a few."

"Maybe just a few"? As if Iran's regime would honor a commitment like that any more than they have honored their other commitments? (sampling: here, here , here, here, here and here)

In reality, Iran's mullahs will most likely blackmail the Biden Administration for billions of dollars not to use their new bombs "on my watch", as then President Barack Obama put it in 2015. With a new administration, there can be a new blackmail.

The United States, under the Biden Administration, is has been trying to "thwart the will" of Israel's voters -- again (here and here).

Begin with Friday night, January 27 in Neve Yaakov, a Jewish neighborhood in northern Jerusalem. Jews are at a synagogue to pray. An Arab terrorist starts a murder rampage, shooting seven people dead and seriously wounding three others. Scenes of joy erupt in the Arab towns of the West Bank, ruled by the Palestinian Authority, and in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Sweets are given out and fireworks are set off to celebrate the murder of Jews.

The next morning, a 13-year-old Arab boy shoots two Jews in Jerusalem near the Old City, seriously wounding them.

On February 10, an Arab terrorist rammed his car into a crowd of Jews at a Jerusalem bus stop, killing three people, including two children. The Neve Yaakov terrorist and the 13-year-old Arab boy were residents of Jerusalem; the bus stop terrorist was an Israeli citizen. Arab children who knew the boy were interviewed on television. They described him as a hero and said that if they had a gun, they would have done the same thing.

The Palestinian Authority's "pay-for-slay" jobs-program, paid for by "over $200 million" fungible U.S. taxpayer dollars in funding reinstated by President Joe Biden, incentivizes and rewards the murder of Jews.

"[I]f we had one single penny left, we would spend it on the families of martyrs and prisoners," Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said.

Abbas' Fatah faction boasted of carrying out 7,200 terror attacks in 2022 against Israel, while criticizing Hamas for not attacking Israel.

Many Israelis have no illusions anymore. They see that the Palestinian Authority incites Jew-hate, whips up terrorism and tells Arab children and adults that to be a martyr for Islam allows them direct access not only to paradise, but also to generous funds for the terrorists and their families.

The Palestinian Authority payments amount to $300 million annually. Not bad for a Middle East jobs program, funded by the US and the European Union (here, here, here, here, here and here).

Meanwhile, Europe is involved in efforts to block accountability of how their NGO funds are used. No reports on payments to the families of murderers; no reports on terror tunnels or other military infrastructure being built; no reports on how Europe is funding massive land theft by Palestinians of areas that officially belong to Israel. How convenient.

Israelis can see that a growing number of Muslim Arabs residing in Jerusalem have been incited by hate propaganda by the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad; that the number of deadly terrorist attacks have been on the rise, and that Israel's former Bennett-Lapid government was unable to stand its ground in the face of the Biden Administration.

Israelis can also see that the Biden Administration has continually made decisions hostile to Israel, including once again funding the Palestinian Authority without even requiring that it renounce terrorism. The Administration also brought back the goal of a "two-state solution": if a Palestinian state were to emerge, it could -- and most likely would -- be used as a launching pad from which to attack Israel, as promoted in the Palestinian "Phased Plan": Get whatever land you can, then use that to get the rest.

Mainly, Israelis saw that the Biden administration never gave up trying to enable to enable the mullahs' regime in Iran to have unlimited nuclear weapons -- all while the mullahs have made the genocidal destruction of Israel their overriding goal.

Accordingly, on November 1, 2022, millions of Israelis elected Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel's Prime Minister, heading a broad coalition government. As in any democracy, they stand ready to respond to the expectations of the majority who brought them to power. These expectations include fighting firmly against terrorism and other threats, and, as is the first obligation of any government, ensuring the security of the country. The coalition also pledged to restore the balance between the Knesset and the Supreme Court.

In the United Kingdom, Parliament has the final say -- not the High Court. For the last 30 years, this has not been the situation in Israel.

In the 1990s, Israeli Supreme Court President Aharon Barak, declaring that "everything is justiciable," executed a "judicial revolution," through which the Court has arrogated virtually all political power, including the ability to override laws and even operational decisions by the Ministry of Defense and the IDF.

The government's proposed reforms would simply restore the checks and balances and the separation of powers that Israel had before Barak's "revolution."

Since Barak's tenure, Israel's Supreme Court and the Attorney General have become a self-selecting group, unelected by the public or their representatives. Their decisions, lacking a constitution, were increasingly based not on law but on their invented doctrine of "reasonableness" -- often resulting in "whatever I think is reasonable".

At present, Israel's Supreme Court, among other freewheeling entitlements, may overrule a quasi-constitutional Basic Law based on 'reasonableness"; accept petitions from anyone regardless of standing (even if the petitioner would not be directly affected by the outcome -- a provision that has resulted in a firehose of lawsuits by "concerned" non-governmental-organizations); and veto political appointments. According to the columnist Ron Jager:

"The Israeli Supreme Court has over the past three decades created in Israel a judicial reality in which there are literally no limits to its authority, and it recognizes no limits or restrictions to intervene and exercise judicial review by governmental action and/or legislation... The judicial reforms are not out to destroy Israel's democracy but to save and restore it."

Former US Attorney General Michael Mukasey pointed out:

"[I]n view of the court's sweeping self-imposed authority, it is difficult at times to describe the current condition as the rule of law..... Real reform would recognize the distinction between legal issues that can be decided in court and policy issues relegated to the political arena. It would also permit cases to be brought only by parties with a direct and personal interest."

The new Netanyahu government immediately faced radical hostility from both from its political opponents and much of the Israeli media, starting even before it was sworn in.

For years, many Israelis had gotten used to turning to the Supreme Court for favorable "final say" decisions that they were not able to obtain through the elected parliament, the Knesset. Overnight, they now find themselves losing their perch.

The new Israeli government has not violated any of the rules of Israeli democracy. In a democratic country that held a free and fair election, the one thing that does not seem democratic is to demand that the decision of the voters be overthrown.

Nevertheless, on December 1, outgoing interim Prime Minister Yair Lapid declared of the oncoming Netanyahu cabinet: "This is the government that was elected democratically, but wants to destroy democracy". Former Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon last month called for a general strike and -- entirely innocent of the of the irony -- alleged that the new Israeli government wanted to make Israel "a fascist, racist, messianic and corrupt state". On January 15, former Prime Minister Ehud Barak said:

"[T]his government is legal but clearly illegitimate because of its plan to crush Israeli democracy... This is an assassination of the Declaration of Independence, and democracy must defend itself..."

On February 13, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai threatened:

"[I]f a country becomes a dictatorship via the democratic process, it will only be restored as a democracy via bloodshed."

Demonstrations continue, but even if 100,000 protestors turn out, it is still only a small number compared to the 2.4 million citizens who voted for Israel's new government.

Behind this subversion, it turns out, is none other than the U.S. State Department, which for years has reportedly been channeling funding to a "far left", "anti-Netanyahu" non-profit organization, the Movement for Quality Government (MQG) .

The journalist Caroline Glick notes:

"MQG began its current campaign of delegitimization, subversion and demonization immediately after the Netanyahu government was sworn into office on Dec. 29. The next day, MQG petitioned the Supreme Court to prevent Shas leader Aryeh Deri from serving as a minister in the government.

There was no legal basis for the petition. But that didn't bother the lawyers at MQG....

"Never mind that the justices have a conflict of interest since it is their powers the government's proposed reforms would check. Never mind that in a bid to prevent politicized judges and prosecutors from overturning the will of the voters, the law explicitly permits prime ministers to serve not only while standing trial, but even if convicted. And never mind that the charges against Netanyahu have fallen apart in Jerusalem District Court.

"Justice Minister Yariv Levin described MQG as 'a gang of lawyers who do not respect the outcome of the election, working to carry out a coup and remove the prime minister from office.... This effort to oust the prime minister in contravention of the law, while trampling on the democratic election, is no different from a coup that is carried out with tanks. The goal is the same...'

"Since MQG's primary activity is subverting democracy in Israel by waging lawfare and sowing chaos in a bid to block democratically elected right-wing governments from fulfilling their pledges to voters, it's fairly clear that when MQG refers to 'democracy education,' it doesn't mean majority rule.

Israel's Supreme Court, by excessive overreach, apparently doomed itself.

Ironically, in Washington D.C., a "January 6th Committee", without due process -- no cross examination, no independent selection of members, no right to counsel, no exculpatory evidence -- pretended to "investigate" as criminal the very same activity that the Biden Administration is backing in Israel: trying to change the outcome of a free and fair election.

On January 6, 2021, Americans had the audacity to enter their own government buildings while police held the doors open for them. For these "crimes", the "January 6th Committee" proceeded as a kangaroo court (here, here and here), with a result called "predetermined."

Israel is and will remain a very much a democracy – just as it was before Justice Aharon Barak arrogated virtually unlimited powers to its Supreme Court. Calls for uprisings and civil disobedience, combined with false accusations of "fascism" -- and the whole focus-group supermarket of pejoratives -- appear to be just sore-loser propaganda.

The Israeli government is trying to restore the democratic institutions that it used to have, of which it has been stripped.

The demonstrations -- despite what the Biden Administration might wish -- are just the loud last gasp of upper-class "elites" who have been entrenched in powerful unelected positions for decades.

That all this undemocratic disruption being done in the name of "defending democracy" just makes matters worse. The reality, sadly, is quite the opposite.

The situation has, of course, created an ideal opportunity for Israel's enemies to vilify and demonize the country even further.

The European media, which generally does not hide its antipathy towards Israel, has published virulent diatribes against the new Israeli government. They say that Israel is ruled by an "extreme right", and speak of Israel's decline and fall. They present the recent terrorist attacks as consequences of a "dangerous government" coming to power in Israel. It was, in fact, terrorist attacks that partly led to the "sweeping victory": most Israelis evidently thought that the new government would do a better job of protecting them.

The French newspaper Le Monde dyspeptically predicted that the "colonization" of the "occupied Palestinian territories" will accelerate and that "Jewish supremacists" will rule Israel unchecked.

The Guardian in the UK wrote that a "full-blown Palestinian uprising" is to be expected, and presented the recent Palestinian terrorist attacks on civilians as responses to an IDF arrest raid in Jenin in which "nine Palestinians" were killed. The article omitted to say that the Palestinian terrorists whom the IDF came to arrest opened fire on the soldiers and were killed in the exchange of fire.

The American mainstream media have also been taking harsher anti-Israeli positions. New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, anti-Israel for years, wrote that "The Israel we know is gone". "[M]any ministers" in the new Israeli government", he threw in, "are hostile to American values".

Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer and former Middle East peace envoy Aaron David Miller published an column in the Washington Post saying that the new Israeli government possesses "anti-democratic values unfriendly to U.S. interests," and recommended that the Biden administration impose a partial arms embargo on Israel and punish Morocco, Bahrain, the UAE and Sudan for signing normalization agreements with Israel.

At a time when terrorism has struck and with a U.S. administration unfriendly to Israel, it is revealing that professed friends of Israel can talk in such an irresponsible way. They speak of a threat to Israeli democracy? They are a threat to Israeli democracy.

The Biden Administration can barely conceal its contempt for the new Israeli government. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Israel at the time of two of the Jerusalem terror attacks, rather than condemn them clearly and unambiguously, spoke mushily of a "horrifying surge in violence... we will be encouraging the parties to take steps to calm things down", as if Israel had been the one promoting violence.

Blinken insidiously added that the relationship between the United States and Israel is rooted "in shared values that includes our support for core democratic principles and institutions, including respect for human rights, the equal administration of justice for all, the equal rights of minority groups, the rule of law, free press, a robust civil society." He was giving a lesson in democracy to Prime Minister Netanyahu -- not Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who openly calls for Palestinians to murder Israelis. How thoughtful.

"[T]he vibrancy of Israel's civil society has been on full display of late," Blinken concluded -- meaning that calls for revolt and civil disobedience are in his eyes signs of the "vibrancy" of a civil society -- unless perhaps one is referring to January 6, 2021. During Netanyahu's recent visit to Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a similar homily.

Many left-wing American Jewish organizations have made clear their rejection of Israel's new government. More than 300 American rabbis from the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements signed an open letter saying they would not allow "extreme ministers" from the Israeli government to address their congregations. Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism said, "the current Israeli government is really pushing away the majority of Jews in North America and the diaspora."

On February 1, more than a hundred prominent American Jews, including former leaders of major mainstream Jewish organizations, published a text accusing the Israeli government of "endangering the very existence of the State of Israel and the Israeli nation." They added, "Israel can be likened to a ship sailing the high seas. The current government is taking out the keel, consciously dismantling the state's institutions."

The Israeli government is trying to prevent the murder of innocent Jews and to stop terrorist attacks. Those, however, do not appear to be the goals that everyone has.

What endangers the State of Israel or any nation is not a government dedicated to the safety of its citizens, but people who seem blind to the real dangers: whether from the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Iranian regime, the Chinese Communist Party.

The greatest danger comes from those who cling to the illusion that diplomacy without the credible threat of military consequences will have any effect. These irresponsible individuals seem to prefer avoiding conversation about such dangers, or else try to downplay them. It is much less frightening to talk about gender pronouns than China's preparations for war.

The organizers of the anti-government protests in Israel, backed by the Biden Administration, are apparently trying to "create anarchy" to force another election.

"I call on the leaders of the opposition: stop this," said Netanyahu. "Stop deliberately plunging the country into anarchy. Come to your senses and show responsibility and leadership".

"There is a new reality in Israel," writes Rabbi Joseph Gabbay, "and the left is incapable of coming to terms with this new reality."

"The demography and ideology of the nation has moved to the right, aspiring to a society based on traditional Jewish heritage and moral values. This is an irrefutable reality. The left which has run the country for decades with the help of an autocratic Supreme Court and which believed without an iota of a doubt that the country belonged to them, and only to them, cannot swallow the idea that the party is over... It is time to calm down and respect the voice of the majority."

According to Lee Smith:

"The anti-Bibi coup looks and feels like the anti-Trump operation because it's run by the same people—the Obama operatives who hunted Trump and now run the Biden White House. It was Obama's spy chiefs who fabricated Russiagate, the politically funded smear campaign designed to destabilize the Trump presidency. And it's Obama's State Department that created the machinery to take down Netanyahu nearly a decade ago by funding anti-Bibi election campaigns with U.S. taxpayer dollars."

Iran must not be allowed to get the bomb -- or even "maybe just a few".

Israel Confronts the Iran Threat - Hugh Fitzgerald

by Hugh Fitzgerald

Going it alone.

In World War II, after Germany had conquered most of Europe, and just after the Fall of France, leaving England alone in Europe to carry on against the Nazis, a cartoon by the artist Low appeared, showing a defiant Englishman shaking his fist at the sky, and underneath was the caption “Very well, then—alone.” This cartoon comes naturally to mind when we consider the threat that a nuclear-armed Iran poses to the world, and the certainty that only one country can be counted on to prevent that threat from being realizing. Tiny Israel is now having its “very well then – alone” moment. More on Israel confronting Iran alone can be found here: “Israel Must Prepare to Save the World from a Nuclear Iran,” by Richard Goldberg, FDD, February 24, 2023:

This month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Europe “identifies more with the Israeli position” on Iran’s nuclear program, a conclusion he reached after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. But as Tehran enriches uranium to near weapons-grade purity and European powers resist triggering the snapback of UN sanctions, a dim reality comes into view that only one country — Israel — has the political will and military capability to prevent the emergence of a nuclear-armed Iran.

When Macron met recently with Netanyahu, the French president apparently agreed with Israel’s prime minister on the Iranian threat, recognizing that Tehran had now enriched uranium to the level of 84% purity — with 90% being weapons-grade – a feat which would allow it within a matter of weeks, if Tehran chose, to produce three atomic bombs. Having agreed with Netanyahu on the problem, Macron nonetheless did not offer to take part in any military campaign to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The issue of “snapback” is a complicated one, but essential to better understand the bleak reality Israel now faces. Snapback is the name for a mechanism that can be used to restore all international restrictions and sanctions on Iran that were lifted by the UN Security Council alongside the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (“the nuclear deal”). UN Security Council Resolution 2231 replaced all prior resolutions on Iran — removing the international demand that Iran halt all enrichment activities, striking the outright UN prohibition on Iranian ballistic missile testing, and establishing a series of expirations dates on other key international restrictions.

In 2020, the UN conventional arms embargo on Iran expired. This October, a missile embargo on Iran will expire, despite Tehran’s provision of drones — and potential future transfer of missiles — to Russia to attack Ukraine. Nuclear restrictions sunset soon after, eventually legitimizing Iran’s production of weapons-grade enriched uranium and perfection of missile systems capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

Iran has steadily seen the sanctions regime against it weaken. As part of the 2015 JCPOA, previous restrictions and prohibitions on Iran were lifted. The previous international demand that Iran halt all enrichment activities was stricken, as was the former UN prohibition on Iranian ballistic missile testing, while expiration dates were established for other international restrictions on Tehran. In 2020 the UN embargo on conventional weapons for Iran ended, and in October 2023, the missile embargo will also expire. And the remaining nuclear restrictions on Iran will “sunset,” one by one, until 2030, when any last restrictions on Iran’s ability to produce nuclear weapons will come off.

But UNSCR 2231 came with one condition: If Iran ever violated its own commitments under the nuclear deal, any party to the agreement could notify the Security Council and restore all prior sanctions and restrictions in 30 days. This process is called “snapback,” and France — like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany — has the individual power and prerogative to trigger it.

In January 2020, after Iran began producing low-enriched uranium at its underground Fordow nuclear site, the so-called “E3” of Paris, London, and Berlin initiated the nuclear deal’s dispute process — a preliminary step to snapback, aimed at bringing Iran back into compliance with its commitments. But as 2020 dragged on and public polls indicated Donald Trump would likely lose re-election, Europe opted to keep the deal alive in hopes that Joe Biden’s pledge to rejoin the pact would induce improved Iranian behavior.

Once it was clear that Biden would be president, rather than reward Europe’s decision to maintain the nuclear deal’s sunsets, Iran began a two-year undeterred push toward nuclear threshold status.

No longer worried about what President Trump might do, the Iranians took the new president’s measure and concluded that Biden – so eager to revive the 2015 Iran deal — would do little or nothing if Iran started up again its headlong rush toward enriching uranium nearly to weapons-grade level, putting Iran on the threshold of being able to manufacture nuclear weapons.

In January 2021, Iran began enriching uranium to 20% purity — the threshold for highly enriched uranium — at its Natanz nuclear facility. Rather than continue his predecessor’s maximum pressure campaign, President Biden pulled back economic pressure and offered to lift US sanctions if Iran returned to compliance with the nuclear deal. Tehran responded by producing 60% enriched uranium at Natanz — then 20% at Fordow, and finally 60% at Fordow by November. At any point, the E3 could have moved forward with the snapback process it started in January 2020, but no party did. Instead, Iran was allowed to amass larger and larger stockpiles of high and low enriched uranium — enough to produce “several” weapons, according to the UN’s top nuclear watchdog.

Neither the E3 nor Washington seemed disturbed enough by Iran’s decision to suspend international monitoring at a key advanced centrifuge manufacturing plant to trigger the snapback. Nor have the E3 felt the need to trigger the snapback in the face of Iran’s refusal over the last four years to answer basic questions about why man-altered uranium particles were discovered at three sites previously unknown and still undeclared to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) — a fundamental breach of Iran’s obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty let alone the nuclear deal.

Iran has prevented the IAEA investigators from doing their job. It will not give the IAEA access to data from cameras at a new, advanced centrifuge plant in Esfahan. And according to Rafael Grassi, the head of the IAEA watchdog group, the Iranians still have not offered any explanation about traces of uranium found by IAEA investigators at three undeclared sites

If the recent confirmation that Iran has enriched uranium to just under the 90% weapons-grade threshold [it now stands at 84%— a line many analysts long believed to be a trigger for military action — does not force Paris, Berlin, or London to complete the UN snapback process — a political action — Jerusalem should finally accept the reality that Israel will need to confront this threat on its own terms, in its own ways, and on its own timelines. There is no cavalry coming from Paris or any other Western capital.

What more could Iran possibly do that would persuade France, German, and the U.K. to “snapback” all the restrictions that had been lifted from Iran as part of the 2015 JCPOA deal? Tehran has clearly been blatantly lying to the IAEA, refusing to give it access to camera data both from its new centrifuge plant in Isfahan, and refusing to explain the uranium particles found at three undeclared sites. The refusal of those nations to discuss military options against Iran is deeply disturbing to the Israelis, who keep hoping that others will finally grasp the nettle of stopping Iran’s nuclear program, now that Tehran has reached such a stage that within weeks it could, if it so chose, produce three nuclear bombs.

And what about the U.S.? Biden keeps saying that Iran will not become a nuclear power “on my watch.” But he has done nothing, as Iran has steadily been enriching uranium to ever-increasing levels of purity; he has done nothing about Iran’s misleading the IAEA investigators. He has given no signs that he is prepared to take military action in concert with Israel. Nor has there been any announcement about the delivery of America’s 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrator, the bunker-buster that Israel will likely need if it is to successfully destroy Iranian nuclear facilities built deep underground at Natanz and deep inside a mountain at Fordow. Is America withholding that bomb from Israel’s arsenal in order to discourage an Israeli attack on Iran? It’s hard to fathom the Bidenites’ reasoning. Do they want a nuclear-armed Iran, which would not only threaten Israel, and Saudi Arabia, but also Europe and America? If they won’t join an Israeli attack on Iran, why won’t they at least provide Israel with the bunker-buster bombs it will need to be successful.

Tehran knows the difference between deterrence and deference, between pressure and platitude. Today, it fears only one country: Israel. This tiny democracy of nine million people will soon be forced to act in a manner that preserves freedom and prosperity for every American and European threatened by the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran. The best Netanyahu can hope for is a “thank you” when the job is done.

Even now the Israelis, while they still keep warning the Europeans and Americans about the Iranian threat, and keep hoping that soon America, at least, will come to its senses and join with Israel in attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, are girding their loins for what is likely to be a solitary campaign by the Jewish state. The situation reminds one of the celebrated movie High Noon, when Gary Cooper straps on his holster and, as one by one the fearful townsfolk of Hadleyville abandon him, goes out to face the Miller Gang alone. That’s the position Israel is in. And at the end, when Iran’s nuclear facilities will have been destroyed by the Israelis — do you doubt that result? — a relieved world will manage to utter a collective “thank you” and then, I fear, will go right back to complaining about Israel’s “illegal settlements” in the “occupied West Bank.”

Iran's Regime Days Away from Nuclear Weapons - Majid Rafizadeh

by Majid Rafizadeh

Since the Biden Administration took office, the Iranian regime seems to have enjoyed having a green light to freely advance its nuclear program, enrich uranium to any higher level it desires, spin as many centrifuges as it likes, and march towards becoming a nuclear-armed state -- without any negative consequences.

  • Thanks to the Biden Administration's weak leadership, Iran has been able to make these major nuclear advancements. Unless the Biden Administration quickly emerges from its confusion, Americans may well have the questionable honor of Russia, China and Iran all aiming nuclear weapons at them at once.

  • The Biden Administration's domestic policies have been alarming enough: runaway inflation, allowing the Chinese Communist Party the run of the US corral, 100,000 hard-drug overdose deaths each year thanks to Biden's open border and the effective destruction of both energy independence and mineral extraction. Instead, the Biden Administration has preferred to go hat-in-hand begging to buy oil from "less than friendly countries," such as Saudi Arabia and Venezuela -- while ignoring Canada -- and minerals from the Chinese Communist Party.

  • The Biden Administration's foreign policies, however, are arguably even worse: the surrender to terrorists in Afghanistan; the failure to deter Russia from invading Ukraine; helping Ukraine only "too little too late;" what appears a looming failure to deter China from overwhelming both Taiwan and the United States – and, as a crowning triumph, conferring upon the world a brutal, expansionist, nuclear-armed Iran.

This week, US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl announced, in a statement confirmed by the United Nations, that Iran has enriched uranium to nearly weapons-grade level at an underground nuclear site, and could produce "nuclear material for a bomb in about 12 days."

Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns tried to reassure the House of Representatives: "We don't see evidence that they've made a decision to resume that weaponization program."

This may very well be a prelude to the Iranian regime's asking the US, "How much will you pay us not to go nuclear on the Biden Administration's watch?'

Since the Biden Administration took office, the Iranian regime seems to have enjoyed having a green light to freely advance its nuclear program, enrich uranium to any higher level it desires, spin as many centrifuges as it likes, and march towards becoming a nuclear-armed state -- without any negative consequences.

Iran's ruling mullahs have been gradually advancing their reach for nuclear capability. They first began increasing uranium enrichment to 20%. Iran's parliament then blocked International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear inspectors from accessing Iranian nuclear sites. A recent report by the Institute for Science and International Security detailed:

"Since June 2022, the IAEA has had no ability to monitor Iran's centrifuge manufacturing or assembly rate, old or new centrifuge stocks, stocks of critical parts and material, or potential diversion of such stocks or manufacturing capabilities to unknown sites. The IAEA has reiterated its concerns about the completeness of the information it has from Iran and its ability to accurately verify Iran's declared centrifuges. With Iran accelerating its advanced centrifuge deployments, uncertainties will likely grow in the estimated number of advanced centrifuges produced in excess of those deployed, adding concern to the possibility that Iran will again seek to build a clandestine enrichment plant, using advanced centrifuges manufactured in secret."

The IAEA, a UN agency, even warned that the information gap about the country's activities has been reaching dangerous levels, adding:

"Iran's decision to remove all of the agency's equipment previously installed in Iran for surveillance and monitoring activities in relation to the JCPOA has also had detrimental implications for the agency's ability to provide assurance of the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program."

Soon after, as reported last month, Iran raised its uranium enrichment level to 60%, edging closer to weapons-grade levels. Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf, Speaker of Iran's parliament, boasted about Iran's ongoing nuclear activities:

"The young and God-believing Iranian scientists managed to achieve a 60 percent enriched uranium product. I congratulate the brave nation on this success."

Already in 2021, Iran had reached a dangerous stage in its nuclear program: producing enriched uranium metal. The IAEA announced on July 6, 2021:

"Today, Iran informed the Agency that UO2 (uranium oxide) enriched up to 20% U–235 would be shipped to the R&D laboratory at the Fuel Fabrication Plant in Esfahan, where it would be converted to UF4 (uranium tetrafluoride) and then to uranium metal enriched to 20% U–235, before using it to manufacture the fuel."

The United Kingdom, France and Germany acknowledged in a joint statement that:

"Iran has no credible civilian need for uranium metal R&D and production, which are a key step in the development of a nuclear weapon."

Last month, the IAEA revealed that in Iran, it found uranium enriched to 84% -- close to the 90% level needed for weaponization.

Enriching uranium to that level is a critical development: the regime is now finally at the threshold of making all the nuclear weapons it wants, with the missiles to deliver them. The Iranian authorities continue to claim that their nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes only. If that is true, why is the regime refusing to cooperate with the IAEA?

Some Iranian leaders have openly acknowledged that the regime's nuclear program was always designed to manufacture atomic weapons. Former deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament Ali Motahari disclosed:

"From the very beginning, when we entered the nuclear activity, our goal was to build a bomb and strengthen the deterrent forces but we could not maintain the secrecy of this issue."

The former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Fereydoon Abbasi-Davani, also admitted that his work was part of a "system" designed to develop nuclear weapons

"When the country's all-encompassing growth began involving satellites, missiles and nuclear weapons, and surmounted new boundaries of knowledge, the issue became more serious for them."

Thanks to the Biden Administration's weak leadership, Iran has been able to make these major nuclear advancements. Unless the Biden Administration quickly emerges from its confusion, Americans may well have the questionable honor of Russia, China, and Iran all aiming nuclear weapons at them at once.

The Biden Administration's domestic policies have been alarming enough: runaway inflation, allowing the Chinese Communist Party the run of the US corral, (here, here, here, here, here and here), 100,000 hard-drug overdose deaths each year thanks to Biden's open border and the effective destruction of both energy independence and mineral extraction. Instead, the Biden Administration has preferred to go hat-in-hand begging to buy oil from "less than friendly countries," such as Saudi Arabia and Venezuela -- while ignoring Canada -- and minerals from the Chinese Communist Party.

The Biden Administration's foreign policies, however, are arguably even worse: the surrender to terrorists in Afghanistan; the failure to deter Russia from invading Ukraine; helping Ukraine only "too little too late;" what appears a looming failure to deter China from overwhelming both Taiwan and the United States – and, as a crowning triumph, conferring upon the world a brutal, expansionist, nuclear-armed Iran.

PM Netanyahu welcomes Smotrich's retractions of Huwara comments - Tovah Lazaroff, Jerusalem Post Staff

by Tovah Lazaroff, Jerusalem Post Staff

Smotrich's retraction of his comments comes amid reports that he won't receive a US visa ahead of his planned visit next week.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s retraction of the statement he made calling to wipe out the West Bank Palestinian town of Huwara.

Last week, the far-right politician called for the West Bank Palestinian town of Huwara to be wiped out after violent settler riots set the town ablaze.

“I think that Huwara needs to be wiped out, but the State of Israel needs to do it, most certainly not private citizens,” he said on Wednesday during a public interview at a conference by business news organization TheMarker.

"It is important for all of us to work to tone down the rhetoric lower the temperature. That includes speaking out forcefully against inappropriate statements and even correcting our own statements."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

“It is important for all of us to work to tone down the rhetoric and lower the temperature,” Netanyahu tweeted early Sunday morning.

“That includes speaking out forcefully against inappropriate statements and even correcting our own statements when we misspeak or when our words are taken out of context,” he continued.

Smotrich's comments came after last week’s events in which a Palestinian gunman fatally shot two brothers Hallel Menachem Yaniv, 22, and Yagel Ya’acov Yaniv, 20 as they drove on Route 60 in Huwara on February 26.

Settlers attacked Huwara later that night, setting fire to dozens of homes and vehicles. The IDF is investigating the shooting death of a Palestinian man, Sameh Aqtash, 37, during the attack.

On February 27, a Palestinian gunman fatally shot US-Israeli citizen Elan Ganeles, 26 as he drove through the Jordan Valley to a wedding.

Deafening silence

Netanyahu tweeted that he wanted to “thank Minister Bezalel [Smotrich] for making clear that his choice of words regarding the vigilante attacks on [Huwara] following the murder of the Yaniv brothers was inappropriate and that he is strongly opposed to intentionally harming innocent civilians.”

“While Minister [Smotrich] clarified his position, I am still waiting to hear a condemnation from the Palestinian Authority for the murder of the Yaniv brothers. And Israel is waiting for the international community to insist that the PA condemn that attack.

"Not only has it not done so, but it also continues to turn a blind eye to the PA’s rampant incitement, to the disgusting spectacle of Palestinians handing out sweets to celebrate terror attacks against Jews and to the official PA pay-to-slay policy, in which the PA pays terrorists to murder Jews.

“The international community’s silence in the face of Palestinian support for terrorism must finally come to an end,” he concluded in English.

In Hebrew, Netanyahu addressed the comments as well, writing: "It is important that Finance Minister Smotrich clarified that he had no intention of harming the innocent or of [carrying out] collective punishment. I know his positions and they were reflected in his clarification. None of us are infallible, including foreign diplomats."

In a follow-up tweet, he added that "Israel's policy is clear: fight aggressively against terrorists and supporters of terrorism, avoid harming innocents and collective punishment.

"Until this moment, the Palestinian Authority has not condemned the murder of the two wonderful brothers, Yagel and Hallel Yaniv, and I regret that there are those in the international community who rushed to condemn Israel but have not yet demanded this necessary condemnation from the Palestinian Authority.

"While Minister Smotrich clarified his position, I am still waiting to hear a condemnation from the Palestinian Authority for the murder of the Yaniv brothers."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

The Prime Minister spoke up after Smotrich during a heated and prolonged interview with Channel 12 said that his words were “incorrect” and were “a slip of the tongue” in the emotional and heated aftermath of the killing of the two Yaniv brothers.

Listeners should have known not to take those words literally, Smotrich said, adding that only someone with a “fevered mind” would impinge that “I or anyone in Israel would desire to harm innocent people.”

Smotrich clarified that he had meant to underscore that the IDF should be “more proactive and aggressive in the fight against terrorism because people here are being murdered here.”

In the aftermath of the killing of the Yaniv brothers, residents of Huwara set off fireworks and handed out sweets, Smotrich charged, adding that residents of that town were involved in terror attacks against Israelis.

Smotrich, who is also a minister in the Defense Ministry, is tasked with oversight for civilian life in Area C of the West Bank, including oversight of Huwara.

The Huwara incident was a“very serious” incident of “nationalistic crime” and citizens should not be allowed to take the law into their own hands as they did there, Smotrich said, as he clarified that he did not view it as an act of terror.

One has to be careful with the terror designation, Snotrich explained, because Israeli demonstrators who blocked roads and who acted violently toward the police could also be considered to be carrying out “acts of terror.”

Smotrich's US tensions

Smotrich’s words on Huwara have been roundly condemned by the international community with the Israeli media reporting that the US is weighing whether to block his entry to the United States next week in light of his plans to address the Israel Bonds group.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price last week characterized Smotrich’s statement on Huwara as disgusting. According to Channel 12, US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides said that Smotrich’s words were “stupid” and if he could, he would “throw Smotrich out of the plane” as he flew to the US.

Smotrich tweeted in response late Saturday night, “I am not angry with the @USAmbIsrael. I am convinced he did not mean to incite to kill me when he said that I should be thrown from the plane, just as I did not mean harm to innocents when I said that Huwara should be wiped out. People sometimes use harsh expressions that they don't mean [to be taken literally] to convey a harsh message. It happens to everyone.”

Smotrich had initially issued his words about Huwara during a public interview on March 1 at a conference organized by the Israeli business news organization The Marker. He said, “I think that Huwara needs to be wiped out, but the State of Israel needs to do it, most certainly not private citizens.”

It followed his decision to press like on a tweet by the Samaria Regional Council head David Ben-Zion who had written that the town of Huwara had to be “erased."

Canada: Catholic Student Suspended – Then Arrested – For ‘Opposing Gender Ideology’ - Christine Williams

by Christine Williams

His lawyer now warns that religious freedom is “essentially dead” under the Trudeau government.

In a sickening update in February — that should shake the conscience of every defender of human rights and freedoms in Canada — police in Ontario arrested 16-year-old Josh Alexander for attending class at his Catholic school, after he was suspended for protesting the allowance of males who identify as females to use girls’ bathrooms. I have been following the developments of this story from the beginning. See HERE and HERE for background. Thankfully, focus on the case isn’t going away, but is attracting increasing media attention across Canada, the U.S., and the UK.

To sum it up: Ontario student Josh Alexander was penalized with a 20-day suspension last year by his Catholic school “after he organized a walkout in protest of male students being permitted into the girls’ washroom.” In an interview around the time of Alexander’s initial suspension, the teen told LifeSiteNews that he believes, in accordance with Catholic teaching and the Bible, that there are only two sexes. Under the freedom of religion, Alexander has the guaranteed right to affirm this belief.

Or so we thought.

Liberty Coalition Canada (LCC) took up Josh’s case and sent a “Notice of Intention to Appeal Suspension” to Mary-Lise Rowat, Superintendent of Educational Services at Renfrew County Catholic District School Board. But Josh’s situation deteriorated, and fast. LifeSite news wrote in an update in February:

Alexander’s lawyer, James Kitchen, the chief litigator for Liberty Coalition Canada (LCC), told LifeSiteNews that Renfrew County Catholic District School Board won’t “permit him (Alexander) to attend school for the rest of the year because, according to them, Josh’s beliefs constitute ‘bullying of trans students.’”

What nonsense. Mind you, the school is bullying Josh over his religious rights and freedoms, while doing severe damage to what the school proclaims about honoring Catholic teachings.

In an update reported by Fox News, Kitchen stated that his client’s legal battle shows how freedom in the country is rapidly eroding. He further warned that Canadians “do not understand the gravity of the threat their government increasingly poses to religious freedom, which he said is ‘essentially dead’”. One of the first things Justin Trudeau did when he first became Prime Minister in 2015 was to shut down the Office of Religious Freedom.

Josh’s case also caught the attention of Elon Musk:

I previously wrote to the Diocese of Pembroke, of which Josh’s school, St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, and the Renfrew County Catholic District, are a part. Below is an excerpt from that correspondence, where you’ll notice immediately how institutions are able to hide (unintentionally or not) behind bureaucratic red tape, even when in violation of their own stated values.

Vicar General / Vicaire général <vg@pembrokediocese.com> wrote:

Dear Ms. Williams,

Thank you very much for your email, to which Bishop Desrochers has asked me to reply on his behalf.

The Renfrew County District Catholic School Board is a separate corporation from the Diocese of Pembroke, and it is under the direction of a Board of Trustees. The diocese does not have jurisdiction over the internal life of the Board, nor does the Bishop have the authority to intervene in internal matters. He can, however, exercise moral suasion, and he is in regular contact with the Board’s leadership.

I thank you again for writing.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Michael Smith

Vicar General

and more….

Vicar General / Vicaire général <vg@pembrokediocese.com> wrote:

Thank you for your reply, Ms. Williams.

I am not party to Bishop Desrochers’ conversations with the Board’s leadership, but it can safely be said that the Bishop can be trusted to uphold Catholic teaching in a manner that is both clear and sensitive to others, especially the vulnerable.

In Christ,

Fr. Michael Smith

The full correspondence is HERE.  From all appearances, the influence of Bishop Desrochers is questionable in a hierarchy that also appears to be corrupted at the highest levels and will only change with public opposition. Without any pushback, Canadians will lose more of their rights. So far, the Catholic faith, to all appearances, is of little importance at Josh’s school or within the diocese. Ethically, therefore, why is this school even being funded by taxpayers under a Separate School system, categorized as religious? The news broke last month that the Ontario government faces a legal challenge for funding Catholic schools; St. Joseph’s Catholic High School and the Renfrew District School Board makes the challenge easy. In an appropriately-titled report by the Christian Broadcasting Network: “Canadian Student Kicked Out of State-Funded Catholic School for Expressing Biblical Beliefs on Gender.”

Far too many people’s rights are being trampled unconstitutionally in the rush to adhere to woke ideology. In Josh’s case, he is a whipping boy for the intolerant in a multicultural country where its Prime Minister routinely hails the virtues of “tolerance” and “diversity.”

Josh’s school, St. Joseph’s Catholic School, boasts about its faith and its “atmosphere of trust” on its website:

After the egregious decision to suspend Josh until the end of the school year, Josh showed up to class anyway, in accordance with his rights and in defiance of the woke gods of his Catholic school. The result: the school called police to arrest him. Josh tweeted:

The cowards tried to hide the impact of the school’s actions:

“The entire class was dismissed while the staff handled my situation,” the boy continued. “Shortly after, Ontario Provincial Police arrived and asked me to leave. Once again, I respectfully declined and they arrested me.”

Josh is a courageous youngster who is bearing the burden for religious rights and freedoms in his country, a burden that adults should be carrying. His attorney told told LifeSiteNews “that Alexander’s decision to go back to school today was ‘an intelligent choice of a young man who knows what he is doing.’”

In a society that claims to abhor bullying, it is appalling that institutional bullying is now at play in the case of Josh Alexander and in full violation of Canada’s constitution.

Cuba, the ‘Country of Sugar’, Has No Sugar - Daniel Greenfield

by Daniel Greenfield

Socialism works.

The USSR went from having the breadbasket of the world to going into debt to buy wheat from America. Venezuela used to export gasoline, now it’s having to pay others to refine its crude. Cuba used to be the hub for sugar, now it’s rationing it. Socialism works. Sometimes it works so well there’s nothing left.

“In 1894, one year before Cuba’s third war of independence, the island was producing close to a million tons of sugar a year. By 1959, there were 156 sugar mills operating in the country, with a total annual production of 5.6 million tons. In the eighties, Cuba was producing an average of eight million tons per year. But this year, we’ll be lucky if we get 400,000 tons. It’s a national disaster,” he told me. Lázaro said that last year’s harvest was the worst on record, with a total of just 480,000 tons – the lowest in the last century and a half.

The dismantling of Cuba’s sugar industry began in 2002 under orders from Fidel Castro, and was aimed at restructuring the sector to make it more efficient. To this end, more than half of the 156 mills operating in the country, which employed around half a million people, were shuttered, and all remaining resources were concentrated in the 70 plants that remained, with a focus on achieving smaller but more productive harvests. “The experiment was a failure: tens of thousands of people lost their jobs, most of the mills disappeared, and production plummeted,” Lázaro told me. “Last year there were only 36 mills still in operation, and this year, that number has dropped to 23. The forecast for the 2022-2023 harvest was 400,000 tons of processed sugar, which is barely enough to satisfy national consumption, but at this rate they won’t even manage that much,”

In between the five-hour speeches and chats with Hollywood celebs, turns out Fidel didn’t know anything about running a country or much of anything else.

Lefties blame most of Cuba’s problems on the U.S. embargo, as if it doesn’t have a world full of trading partners, but how do you blame Cuba’s inability to produce its own cash crop?

Lázaro was outraged. He said that this month, in his neighborhood, “they only gave out” one pound of sugar, when the normal ration stipulated by the government’s “supplies booklet” is four pounds per person. “In the bodega, at subsidized prices, a pound of sugar costs eight Cuban pesos, but since there’s no sugar anywhere, people have to buy it on the black market for 100 or 150 pesos. Just imagine! A pension in Cuba is between 1,000 and 1,500 pesos!” Then Lázaro took a turn for the philosophical, quoting the famous Criollo landowner who once remarked: “without sugar, there is no country.” “Well,” said Lázaro, “we’ve reached the point where in the country of sugar, there is no sugar.”

!Viva la revolucion!

The Abrahamic Family House of H. E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Promote Peace - Pete Hoekstra

by Pete Hoekstra

The Abrahamic Family House is a center for learning, dialogue and practicing one's faith. It includes a mosque, named for Eminence Ahmed El-Tayeb, a church bearing the name of His Holiness Pope Francis, and a synagogue carrying the name of Moses Ben Maimon (Maimonides).

  • Beyond the economic gains, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has multiplied these achievements to consolidate the constructive spirit of peace, of which his country is one of the world's leading promoters.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) are inaugurating a new, unique multicultural center to promote peace.

The UAE are known for their commitment to advancing peace in the world. It was in this spirit that the country signed the Abraham Accords with Israel in 2020, under the auspices of the United States. These agreements were also signed with the Jewish state by Bahrain and Morocco as well as, recently, Sudan.

As a tool for peace, these agreements would have generated "$2.85 billion in trade in 2022 while making a significant contribution to regional security and stability." This was stated by Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, in one of his first appearances since being appointed top diplomat in Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

Beyond the economic gains, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has multiplied these achievements to consolidate the constructive spirit of peace, of which his country is one of the world's leading promoters.

It is in this same spirit that the Abrahamic Family House was officially inaugurated in Abu Dhabi on February 16, as an exemplary place to promote the culture of mutual understanding, living together and fraternal coexistence among religions.

It is a center for learning, dialogue and practicing one's faith. It includes a mosque, named for Eminence Ahmed El-Tayeb, a church bearing the name of His Holiness Pope Francis, and a synagogue carrying the name of Moses Ben Maimon (Maimonides). These three places of worship are cubic in shape (30 meters deep, 90 feet wide and 90 feet high) and share the same stature and exterior dimensions. They were designed by the prominent Ghanaian-British architect, Sir David Adjaye, in strict accordance with the architectural codes and particularities of each religion.

Adjacent communal spaces were built to provide a place for meetings and dialogue in the service of mutual understanding.

Located in the Saadiyat cultural district of Abu Dhabi, the Abrahamic Family House opened to the public on March 1. The official inauguration ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.

Designed on the site of the signing of "Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together" by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed El-Tayyeb in Abu Dhabi in 2019, this new and unique achievement is in keeping with the spirit of interfaith brotherhood promoted by President Al-Nahyan. It is also a tribute to the multicultural nature of the UAE, which is home to some 200 different and cultures and faiths.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, president of the Abrahamic Family House, describes it as "symbolic of the UAE's longstanding values of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence -- values embodied by our founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed." He added: "We hope that this House will inspire young people around the world, highlighting our common humanity and working to create a more peaceful world for generations to come.

Mohammed Al Mahrasawi, co-chair of the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity and former President of Egypt's Al-Azhar University, said:

"The Abrahamic Family House is a true reflection of the provisions of Document on Human Fraternity, which calls for ensuring peaceful coexistence. It is a testament to the vision of UAE and its leaders toward promoting interfaith dialogue and peace among all. The Abrahamic Family House is a model of coexistence, reconciliation, and mutual respect for the sake of mankind."

Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See, said:

"The Abrahamic Family House is a concrete example for people of different religions, cultures, traditions, and beliefs to return to the essential: love neighbor. This will be a place that fosters dialogue and mutual respect, and acts in the service of human fraternity as we walk the paths of peace together."

Sir Ephraim Mirvis, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, said:

"From today onwards, let us use this extraordinary sacred site to promote harmony and peace. In a world in which differences can separate us, let us say here that our shared values must exist for the sake of our universal aspirations."

Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan Grow Harsher - Mohshin Habib

by Mohshin Habib

The International Journal of Science and Research stated in 2019: "In Pakistan, many people are on death row or serving life sentences for blasphemy in Pakistan then in any other country in the world."

  • Between 1987 and 2017, blasphemy charges were brought against 1,549 people. Among these, 829 people were non-Muslims. Since 1990, more than 70 people have been brutally murdered by mobs over allegations of insulting Islam. Critics say the fact that minorities figure so prominently in these cases shows how the laws are unfairly applied.

  • Until 1947, the time of Indian liberation and separation, there had been only seven blasphemy cases. Between 1927 and 1985 (58 years) only ten cases were heard in Pakistan's courts. Since then, however, there have been more than 4,000 cases.

Pakistan's blasphemy laws have once again been made even more stringent by the country's lawmakers. Amid a long-running international outcry against the notorious blasphemy laws, the National Assembly of Pakistan on January 17 unanimously passed "The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Act 2023," which increased the minimum punishment for those found guilty of insulting the Islamic Prophet Mohammad's companions, wives and family members from three years to 10 years' imprisonment, along with a fine of 1 million Pakistani rupees ($4,122).

The bill was brought forth by National Assembly Member Abdul Akbar Chtrali, a leader of the Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami. Chtrali, on May 17, 2021, had also called for the use of nuclear weapons against India and Israel. The statement of "object and reasons" for the bill by Chitrali says:

"The fact may be observed that disrespecting to the Companion of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and other sacred personalities not only promotes terrorism and disruption in the country but it also hurts the people from all walks of life..."

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) last month expressed its deep concern about the law:

"While the stated aim of this bill is to curb sectarianism, HRCP believes it is likely to exacerbate the persecution of Pakistan's beleaguered religious minorities and minority sects."

HRCP also stated that given Pakistan's troubled record of the misuse of such laws, these amendments are likely to be weaponized disproportionately against religious minorities and sects, resulting in false police reports, harassment and persecution. While Chtrali and the National Assembly thought it necessary to make the laws harsher, human rights activists in Pakistan and abroad are seeing the danger ahead for the minorities, including Christians, Ahmadiyya Muslims (whom Pakistan does not recognize as Muslim), and Hindus.

Peter Jacob, a leader of Pakistan's Catholic community and executive director of the Lahore-based Centre for Social Justice, labeled the amendment as an unfortunate development. "Our demands have been ignored again. Sadly there is no history of any debates on such laws in our assemblies," he said, addressing a January 17 gathering of activists and lawyers in Lahore.

The blasphemy laws are mostly used against religious minorities. According to the Pakistani National Commission For Justice and Peace, Christians, Hindus and Ahmadiyya Muslims constitute the accused in almost half of the blasphemy cases in the country, even though together they make up less than 5% of the whole population. Between 1987 and 2017, blasphemy charges were brought against 1,549 people. Among these, 829 people were non-Muslims. Since 1990, more than 70 people have been brutally murdered by mobs over allegations of insulting Islam. Critics say the fact that minorities figure so prominently in these cases shows how the laws are unfairly applied.

Most importantly, blasphemy is considered a non-bailable offense, which means that bail may be granted at the discretion of the court but cannot be claimed as a matter of right. Moreover, once an individual is charged with violating blasphemy laws, he or she can be arrested without a warrant.

In 1860, the British colonial authority in India introduced the Indian Penal Code, containing three blasphemy provisions. They were Sections 295, 296 and 298, with a fourth blasphemy provision, Section 295-A, enacted in 1927. However, these laws were almost unenforced under British rule. Until 1947, the time of Indian liberation and separation, there had been only seven blasphemy cases. Between 1927 and 1985 (58 years) only ten cases were heard in Pakistan's courts. Since then, however, there have been more than 4,000 cases. During the tenure of military dictator Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who ruled the country from 1978 to 1988, the laws in Pakistan became harsher. Numbers of clauses were added to the laws to appease the Islamists, to Islamize the country, and to isolate the Ahmadiyya community, who were declared non-Muslim in 1973.

The International Journal of Science and Research stated in 2019:

"In Pakistan, many people are on death row or serving life sentences for blasphemy in Pakistan then in any other country in the world."

In an editorial titled "Wrong Approach," Pakistan's leading English language newspaper, Dawn, wrote:

"Pakistan has for the past several decades been battling sectarianism. While targeted killings and sectarian acts of terrorism may currently be down, in the past the nation has witnessed grotesque massacres of innocent people carried out by sectarian death squads... It is hard to understand why such a sensitive law was passed 'unanimously' without quorum.... Moreover, there is concern that this law will be open to misuse, much as the blasphemy laws are."

These laws urgently need to be repealed.

Turkey: Islamist Sex with Children Is Fine; Condemning It Is an Offense - Burak Bekdil

by Burak Bekdil

A general election is scheduled for this spring. The Turkish people and NATO deserve better.

  • As the Turkish government's topmost religious authority under Erdoğan, Diyanet is giving permission for an illegal act under the pretext of Islamic law: no obstacle for adoptive parents to marry, and consummate the marriage with, the adopted children who survived the earthquake.

  • The fatwa runs up against the Turkish Civil Code, according to the Istanbul Bar Association's Center for Children's Rights. Article 129 of the Civil Code bans marriage between an adopter and an adoptee, and Article 500 grants adoptees the right of succession, the Center said, noting that Diyanet's statements should not be against the Constitution or the laws.

  • Then a worse blow hit: Diyanet has filed a criminal complaint against prominent columnist Fatih Altaylıı on the grounds that he shared "grave insults against the institution and its personnel" on social media. If Altaylı is to be blamed for his tweet, his only wrong should be that he did not insult a pedophilic religious institution enough.

  • Erdoğan's focus is not on the relief effort or on the national agony. Turkey's broadcasting watchdog, RTUK, suspended the television stations Halk TV, KRT and Tele1, for three days and fined another, Fox TV, on grounds that "their coverage of the earthquake was unjustly critical of the government."

Diyanet, Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs, shocked the nation when it issued an Islamic fatwa (religious opinion) giving permission for an illegal act under the pretext of Islamic law, saying that people who adopt children orphaned by the recent earthquake may marry, and consummate the marriage with, their adoptive children. This unpleasant story persists. Islamists, citing the hadith - a dubious source of Prophet Mohammed's sayings written 200 years after his death and on which Islamist scholars have never agreed for 14 centuries -- defend their lust for underage girls. [Here is a long list of Turkish Islamist practices of pedophilia in the past years.]

Most recently, in November, Turkey was shocked at news that a prominent Islamic sheik, the leader of a religious order fiercely devoted to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, had married off his six-year-old daughter to a 29-year-old disciple. Six! The girl had been forced into sex and became a mother at 14. She complained to the prosecutor's office, but Erdogan's authorities apparently did not want to bother the sheik.

As she became an adult, she collected evidence of abuse, made it public, and only then the judiciary took action. Initially the court decided to try the suspects without detention, but under huge public pressure, the court detained both the father and husband. The father, in a statement, said that he was answerable only to Allah, not to a court.

At the first court hearing in January, loyalists of the Hiranur sect gathered in front of the court building "to protest the legal proceedings against their sheik." In defense of the girl's father, they shouted, "Allahu akbar [Allah is the greatest]." At the same hearing, the court ordered a "secrecy and media ban" on future proceedings. The trial was adjourned to February 27.

Diyanet, Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs, an office under Erdoğan's authority, shocked the nation once again when it issued an Islamic fatwa (religious opinion) shortly after the worst disaster in modern Turkey's history: a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey's southeast, as well as Syria, and that killed nearly 50,000 people and injured more than 100,000.

The earthquake zone of 10 provinces accounts for a sixth of Turkey's population of 85 million.

More than 75 countries sent teams and aid for the rescue effort; the Israeli team was the second-largest. U.S. and Greek foreign ministers, in a show of solidarity, visited the area. Thousands of babies and children pulled out of the rubble now have no families. More than 300,000 Turkish families have applied to adopt parent-less children.

In a tragedy of that scale, what could be the primary concern of the suffering country's top religious authority? Helping the relief work? Not for Diyanet.

"[F]rom the Islamic viewpoint, there is no barrier to marriage between the adopter and the adopted child." Diyanet's fatwa said. What?! This looks surreal, horrific. Not, it seems, in the view of Turkish Islamists. Diyanet continued:

"Although Islam recommends 'the care and protection of orphaned children,' it does not recognize the institution of adoption, which has certain legal consequences. Accordingly, the relationship between the adopter and the adopted child does not create a barrier to marriage, nor is it permissible for the adopted child to be registered in the genealogy of the adopters instead of their biological parents."

Secular Turks were once again outraged. In his Twitter account, prominent columnist Fatih Altaylı wrote:

"We understand that you are really perverts, but what are you doing in an institution like the Diyanet? Perverts. Go into the porn industry."

There is a legal problem, as well. The fatwa runs up against the Turkish Civil Code, according to the Istanbul Bar Association's Center for Children's Rights. Article 129 of the Civil Code bans marriage between an adopter and an adoptee, and Article 500 grants adoptees the right of succession, the Center said, noting that Diyanet's statements should not be against the Constitution or the laws. As the Turkish government's topmost religious authority under Erdoğan, Diyanet is giving permission for an illegal act under the pretext of Islamic law: no obstacle for adoptive parents to marry, and consummate the marriage with, the adopted children who survived the earthquake.

If Altaylı is to be blamed for his tweet, his only wrong should be that he did not insult a pedophilic religious institution enough.

Not only that. Erdoğan's focus is not on the relief effort or on the national agony. Turkey's broadcasting watchdog, RTUK, suspended the television stations Halk TV, KRT and Tele1, for three days and fined another, Fox TV, on grounds that "their coverage of the earthquake was unjustly critical of the government."
