The Logic in All the Madness - Victor Davis Hanson

 by Victor Davis Hanson

The Biden administration's agendas may have fundamentally changed the country for decades, if not longer—and will require tough remedies that may be almost as unpopular as the wreckage they wrought.

Most Americans believe it is unhinged to deliberately destroy the border and allow 10 million illegal aliens to enter the country without background audits, means of support, any claims to legal residency, and definable skills. And worse still, why would federal authorities be ordered to release repeat violent felons who have gone on to commit horrendous crimes against American citizens?

Equally perplexing to most Americans is borrowing $1 trillion every 90 days and paying 5-5.5% interest on the near $36 trillion in ballooning national debt. Serving that debt at current interest exceeds the size of the annual defense budget and may soon top $1 trillion in interest costs, or more than 13% of the budget.

Why would the United States suspend military aid to Israel as it tries to destroy the Hamas architects of the October 7 massacres? Why would it lift sanctions on a terrorist Iran? Why would it suppress Israel’s response to Iran’s missile attack on the Jewish homeland? Why would it prevent Israel from stockpiling key munitions as it prepares to deal with the existential threats posed by Hezbollah?

Why would the Biden administration cancel key pipeline projects and put vast swaths of federal lands rich in oil and gas off limits to production, even as it further drains the strategic petroleum reserve? Why not pump rather than drain our own oil from strategic stockpiles?

Why would the Biden White House’s counsel’s office meet with Nathan Wade, the former paramour chief prosecutor in the Fani Willis Fulton County prosecution of Donald Trump? Why would the third-ranking prosecutor in the Biden Justice Department step down to lead Alvin Bragg’s Manhattan prosecution of Donald Trump? Why would the Biden Justice Department under Attorney General Merrick Garland select Jack Smith as a special prosecutor of Donald Trump—given his past failures as a special counsel and known political biases?

Nihilism only explains so much. A better explanation is that the Biden administration and its handlers knew that there was a good chance that most of their policies would prove unpopular and might even jeopardize Biden’s reelection.

But they also were confident the changes were of such magnitude that the United States would either become—in the infamous phrase of Barack Obama—“fundamentally transformed” or force the next Republican administration to adopt such tough medicine that it would prove untenable politically and the malady would still prove mostly impossible to undo.

After all, how would a Trump administration deal with 10 million illegal aliens who entered the US without audit or legality? Where are they? How would they be found and deported? How many court suits in blue-jurisdictions before blue judges would have to be overcome?

The country has become accultured to a nonexistent border. And so, the left assumes, it would be expensive and difficult to finish the wall, to stop catch and release, to insist refugee status must be obtained before entry, and to deport what is likely now 20-30 million illegal aliens in toto. In other words, the Biden administration may sigh, “Our work is done. Whatever you think about our illegal methods, we forever changed the idea of immigration and the demographics of the country.”

All presidents—Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden—have run deficits and vastly increased the debt since the Bill Clinton-Newt Gingrich compromises that resulted in a temporary period of balanced budgets. But in the case of Biden, there was no need to keep up the multitrillion-dollar deficits, especially as interest rates on the national debt tripled and the service costs now approach $1 trillion per year.

Biden, after all, inherited a recovering economy, flush with post-COVID-19 lockdown stimulatory dollars, pent-up consumer demand, and ossified supply chains. And then he stupidly poured gasoline on the explosive mix by dousing the country with even more federal spending. Now we have the worst of both worlds: high interest rates and nearly $36 trillion to service.

But in the leftist mind, it was worth it, given that left-wing constituencies received vast expansions of entitlements that will be hard to prune back. And unprecedentedly vast debt at levels like our current burden of 123% of annual GDP prove unsustainable. And the historic correctives are brutal: 1) major cuts in entitlements and redistributive spending programs; 2) tax hikes at a time when state, local, federal, and gas, sales, and property taxes—and other “fees”—already take over half the income of most middle-class Americans; 3) hyper-inflation to pay back what is owed with cheap funny money, with the added leftist fillip that those who have dollars lose wealth and those who don’t gain greater access to them; 4) renunciation of debt. We already saw in the Obama era that liberal bureaucrats and courts often reversed the orders of creditors in bankruptcy hearings. When debt becomes unsustainable, historically arise cries of “Why should the poor suffer more when the rich already have enough money and don’t really need to be paid back?”; and 5) efforts to “confiscate” private wealth by giving, in exchange, government “credits.” For example, there have already been floated ideas that 401Ks could be absorbed into the insolvent Social Security system for credit in government benefits.

Most Americans poll strong support for Israel. They oppose the Biden effort to triangulate by revisiting the old Obama nihilist agendas of emboldening the Iranian/Hezbollah/Hamas/Houthis axis to play off against our traditional allies of Israel and the more moderate Arab regimes.

By failing to prosecute nine months of domestic violence committed by pro-Hamas lawbreakers, by allowing leftist campuses to normalize anti-Semitism and pro-terrorist advocacy, and by destroying the once close alliance of Israel and the United States, the left feels it will be almost impossible to go back to the pre-Obama/Biden years. Their legacy, they hope, is a mendicant Israel utterly dependent on U.S. largess—a condition itself predicated on essentially destroying the idea of a secure Jewish state within its present borders.

The Biden administration sought to curb oil and gas production—save for brief periods before the midterm and reelection campaigns, when it drained the strategic petroleum reserve. The point was to acculturate the public to high gasoline prices, to make inefficient solar/wind/EVs projects competitive against artificially costly fossil fuels, and to institutionalize policies that will make it difficult to reopen closed fields, to reboot federal oilfield leasing, and to dismantle costly subsidies for inefficient green fuels.

That Americans paid hundreds of billions of dollars more for their fuels under Biden, that the auto industry is stuck with vast inventories of money-losing electric vehicles that the public does not want, and that the entire economy has been shackled by counterproductive green mandates were considered worth the cost of alienating the public.

The left knows that neither Alvin Bragg, E. Jean Carroll, Letitia James, Jack Smith, nor Fani Willis would have gone to court against Donald Trump if he was either a leftist or had bowed out of the 2024 presidential race. They know no one has been tried on such pseudo-charges, and no one will again be so charged after Trump. And they accept that no republic can long survive if the opposition party seeks to remove the names of its political opponents from the ballot.

But they also know that the left has now established a valuable precedent: oppose woke progressivism, and one will either become bankrupted by indictments or land before a blue-city jury eager to nullify evidence to ensure the accused is jailed and broke.

So the left believes that its new lawfare was well worth the destruction of the entire tradition of equality under the law: 1) Donald Trump has lost a half-billion dollars in fines and legal fees; 2) a court-bound Donald Trump was robbed of weeks of valuable campaign time; 3) Donald Trump can be forever now libeled as a “convicted felon”; and 4) the left has played chicken with the American Constitution and believes it has won, given conservatives would never enter into a destructive cycle of tit-for-tat.

The Biden years did the country great damage and rendered Biden himself one of the most unpopular incumbent presidents in American history. But his agendas may have fundamentally changed the country for decades, if not longer—and will require tough remedies that may be almost as unpopular as the wreckage they wrought.

Hezbollah Storing Iranian Weapons at Beirut Airport - JNS

by JNS

"This is extremely serious, mysterious large boxes arriving on direct flights from Iran are a sign that things got worse," an airport worker told The Telegraph.

Hezbollah is storing massive amounts of Iranian armaments at Rafic Hariri International Airport, Lebanon's main civilian airport, staff say.

Hezbollah has been accused of using the Beirut airport for weapon storage in the past, but whistleblowers say it has ramped up the practice since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel.

"This is extremely serious, mysterious large boxes arriving on direct flights from Iran are a sign that things got worse," an airport worker told The Telegraph. "When they started to come through the airport, my friends and I were scared because we knew that there was something strange going on."

He feared that an explosion, or an attack on the airport to destroy the weapons, could cause major damage to Beirut, similar to the 2020 port blast that devastated much of downtown. That explosion was blamed on a weapons warehouse belonging to Hezbollah.

"Beirut will be cut off from the world, not to mention the number of casualties and damage," he said. "It's just a matter of time before a disaster also happens at the airport."

Stored weapons include Iranian-made Falaq artillery rockets, Fateh-110 short-range missiles, mobile ballistic missiles and M-600 missiles with ranges of more than 150 miles, The Telegraph reported.

AT-14 Kornet, laser-guided anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), Burkan short-range ballistic missile and RDX, a widely used explosive, are also stored at the airport.

Another whistleblower said, "For years I have been watching Hezbollah operating at Beirut airport, but when they do it during a war, it turns the airport into a target. If they keep bringing in these goods I'm not allowed to check, I really believe I'll die from the explosion or I'll die from Israel bombing 'the goods'. It's not just us, it's the ordinary people, the people coming in and out, going on holiday.

"If the airport is bombed, Lebanon is finished," he added.

Airport staff said that Wafiq Safa, Hezbollah's second in command and the head of its security apparatus, is constantly at the airport.

"Wafiq Safa is always showing up at customs," one whistleblower said. "I feel like if we don't do what they say, our families will be in danger."

The IDF said in a statement, "Hezbollah's strategy to hide weapons and operate from civilian neighborhoods stems from its intentions to draw the IDF to target these civilian areas in times of escalation.

"If Hezbollah were to target Israeli civilians from these sites, the IDF would have no choice but to react, potentially placing Lebanese civilians in harm's way, causing international outrage towards the IDF," the army added.

Benchmark global energy report throws cold water on claims of a transition away from fossil fuels - Kevin Killough

by Kevin Killough

Of that 620 exajoules consumed globally last year, 196 came from oil, 164 came from coal, and 144 came from natural gas, according to the 2024 “Statistical Review of World Energy." All renewables, excluding hydroelectric, was 8.2% of the total.

The latest figures on the globe’s energy mix dispute claims that the world is quickly transitioning off of fossil fuels.

According to the latest version of the “Statistical Review of World Energy,” coal, natural gas and oil remained the dominant source of energy in 2023, and coal consumption and production hit record highs.

Mark Mills, senior fellow with the National Center for Energy Analytics, told Just the News that he didn’t find the data on hydrocarbon use — another name for fossil fuel — surprising.

He’s been predicting for years that, despite claims to the contrary, use and production of fossil fuels would go up as energy demand rises.

“This is not a blip. It’s a feature of society, not a bug,” Mills said.

Eighteen zeros

Widely considered the benchmark source for data on energy trends across the globe, the “Statistical Review” has been published every year since 1952. The report was originally produced by BP, until the British energy company announced last year it was passing off the task to the Energy Institute, a United Kingdom-based energy nonprofit.

According to this year’s “Statistical Review,” the world consumed 620 exajoules of primary energy. Primary energy is energy in its rawest form, which can then be used to produce other energy forms. For example, coal is a primary energy source that can be used to create electricity.

A joule is roughly the amount of energy needed to lift a stick of butter 39 inches high. One hundred joules delivered for 1 hour can power a 100-watt light bulb for one hour. And 620 exajoules is 620 million trillion, or 620 followed by 18 zeros.

Of that 620 exajoules consumed globally last year, 196 exajoules came from oil, 164 exajoules came from coal, and 144 exajoules came from natural gas, according to the 2024 “Statistical Review.”  Another 25 exajoules were produced by nuclear reactors, 40 exajoules were produced by hydroelectric facilities, and 51 exajoules were produced by renewables other than hydroelectric, which includes wind and solar energy.

Coal

In 2023, coal production reached its highest level in the history of the report, hitting 179 exajoules, and energy consumed from coal increased 1.6% over 2022, which was seven times higher than the previous ten-year growth rate. While China was the world’s largest consumer of coal energy, India consumed more energy from coal than North American and Europe combined.

The U.S. produced 526.5 million metric tons of coal in 2023, and 230 million tons of that came from Wyoming, the largest coal-producing state in America. While the globe gobbles coal in increasing amounts every year, according to the “Statistical Review,” coal consumption in both Europe and North America fell below 10 exajoules — the lowest levels since 1965.

Travis Deti, executive director of the Wyoming Mining Association, told Just the News that coal is going to appeal to developing countries like India because it’s affordable, abundant and reliable.

“The world wants what the United States has, and what we have was built on coal. And now they’re going for it,” Deti said.

He said that Wyoming coal producers have had conversations with importers in China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam about buying Wyoming coal, but the export capacity on the West Coast is highly limited.

Wyoming had pursued an export terminal in Washington state that would have opened up markets in Asia, but in 2017, Washington denied a permit for the export dock, arguing it would cause environmental harm to the Columbia River. Wyoming and Montana tried to sue Washington, arguing that the permit denial violated the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition against trade protectionism between states. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that it wouldn’t allow the suit to go forward.

“The environmental movement controls the West Coast, and we just cannot get our coal off the West Coast right now,” Deti said.

He said it wasn’t a win for the environment. Asia was going to increase its coal consumption, but rather than using Wyoming coal, which is very low in sulfur and other harmful pollutants, they’re using dirtier coal. According to the “Statistical Review” India and China source much of their coal from Indonesia, Australia and Russia.

“We have the [mining] capacity to meet demand overseas. It's unfortunate we are where we are today because of misguided politics,” Deti said.

The U.S. does export coal to countries around the world, including China and Asia, but in terms of export volume, America exports just a fraction of what comes out of Indonesia, Australia and Russia.

Oil and gas

Global oil production increased by 1.8 million barrels per day last year, reaching a record high of 96 million barrels per day, according to “Statistical Review.” The U.S. remained the largest producer and increased its output by over 8%.

In 2022, the report states, consumption of oil and biofuel products, such as ethanol and renewable diesel, exceeded 100 million barrels per day for the first time. In 2023, consumption of petroleum oil products alone exceeded that amount.

Natural gas demand increased by 0.02%, only slightly above pre-pandemic levels, and production in 2023 remained stable.

Total primary energy consumption in 2023 increased by 2%, according to the “Statistical Review,” and as a share of the total primary energy, fossil fuel consumption dropped 0.4% in 2023 to 81.5%.

Mills said that should the amount of fossil fuel consumption decline, it’s going to be far into the future. He said the portion of energy supplied by coal, oil and natural gas may decline as a share of the total, but the volume will go up. Demand for energy will grow, he said, and countries will seek out the cheapest and most available energy source.

“The transition that people are babbling about is not a transition in quantities. It’s a transition of shares,” Mills explained.

Electricity demand has been flat in the U.S. for the past 15 years, but increases in data centers and manufacturing electricity usage will see demand grow by 90 gigawatts by 2030.

Because of its vast capacity to produce natural gas, the U.S. has been able to transition a sizable portion of its coal consumption to natural gas, but Mills predicts, as loads increase on the U.S. grid, the amount of coal consumption in the U.S. has reached its bottom.

Wind and solar

Wind and solar saw the largest year-over-year increases in capacity in 2023, according to “Statistical Review.” Combined, the two energy sources rose from 186 billion watts to 462 billion watts, a 67% increase. Solar accounted for 346 billion watts of the total, a 75% increase.

While wind and solar generation capacity increased as a percentage from 2022, it remains a small part of the total energy consumed on the planet. One watt equals one joule, so for comparison, the globe consumed 504 million trillion watts from fossil fuels.

The report also notes that greenhouse gas emissions from energy use, industrial processes, flaring and methane increased 2.1% from 2022, setting a new record.

Not just the southern border: illegal crossings at northern border also breaking records - Bethany Blankley

by Bethany Blankley

A record-breaking 18,644, were apprehended illegally entering the U.S. at the northern border in May. “The northern border is under-resourced by far compared to the southwest border,” said former Border Patrol chief Mark Morgan.

(The Center Square) -

Illegal border crossings at the northern border continue to break records, according to the latest data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A record-breaking 18,644, were apprehended illegally entering the U.S. at the northern border in May, the highest total for the month of May in recorded history.

The northern border has seen the highest number of illegal entries in U.S. history under the Biden administration, The Center Square has reported.

In the first eight months of fiscal 2024, more than 99,000 were apprehended after illegally entering through the northern border, according to CBP data. If the current trajectory continues, the numbers are on track to surpass fiscal 2023 apprehensions of 147,666.

Those numbers are up from 92,737 apprehensions in fiscal 2022 and 24,895 in fiscal 2021.

CBP’s fiscal year begins Oct. 1.

The data excluded “gotaways,” the official term used by CBP to describe foreign nationals who illegally enter the U.S. between ports of entry and don’t return to Mexico or Canada. CBP does not publicly report this data. The Center Square first began obtaining it from a Border Patrol agent on condition of anonymity to provide a more accurate picture of monthly apprehension data.

The busiest sector at the northern border is the Swanton Sector, which includes all of Vermont, six upstate New York counties and three New Hampshire counties.

The sector spans 295 miles of international boundary with the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario and is the first international land boundary east of the Great Lakes.

In fiscal 2023, Swanton Sector Border Patrol agents broke previous records by apprehending the greatest number of illegal border crossers in history of more than 6,700 foreign nationals from 76 countries, The Center Square exclusively reported.

They continue to break records.

“In less than 9 months, Swanton Sector Border Patrol Agents have apprehended more than 10,000 subjects from 83 countries,” Chief Border Patrol Agent Robert Garcia said. The total so far this fiscal year, as of June 10, was more than the sector’s entire record-setting fiscal 2023 year, he said. “We continue to see an unprecedented increase of illegal entries across eastern New York and Vermont.”

This is after northern border apprehensions reached their highest level in U.S. history in the first six months of fiscal 2024, with Swanton Sector agents apprehending in one week more than they did in fiscal 2021, The Center Square reported.

Border Patrol agents at the northern border are also apprehending the greatest number of known or suspected terrorists (KSTs), according to CBP data. In the first six months of fiscal 2024, they apprehended 143 KSTs, The Center Square reported, including an Iranian with terrorist ties.

That number is now up to 199, according to CBP data as of June 20. By comparison, 117 KSTs were apprehended at the southwest border over the same time period.

The U.S.-Canada border is the longest international border in the world of 5,525 miles. Unlike the U.S.-Mexico border, there are no border walls or similar barriers separating the U.S. from Canada and most of the northern border is unmanned and unpatrolled.

Numerous reports indicate that lack of operational control at the northern border poses a serious national security threat, The Center Square first reported.

“The northern border is under-resourced by far compared to the southwest border,” former Border Patrol chief Mark Morgan told The Center Square. “But at the same time, it still represents significant threats. Cartels are expanding their operations, flying people into Canada, which doesn’t require a visa, presenting an opportunity for terrorist watch-listed individuals to exploit. It’s much easier to get to Canada to come across.”

The Swanton Sector is currently hiring, Garcia says, offering up to $30,000 in incentives for new recruits, up from $20,000 hiring incentives offered in February.

Garcia also emphasizes how the local community plays a vital role supporting Border Patrol efforts. “Agents rely on the vigilance of our community,” he said. “Swanton Sector received more than 1,000 suspicious activity reports in 2023 and we are grateful for every call. We cannot effectively do our job without assistance from the public.”

As record numbers continue to pour through the northern border, he’s appealing to the public, saying, “We need your help now more than ever. YOUR call matters! 1-800-689-3362.”

Analysts from the Droxford Maritime Institute published a report on Monday that raises suspicions that Russia is collecting intelligence information on the Israeli Navy.

According to the report, a ship tasked with espionage missions was found in an unusual area in the North Sea.

The area reportedly has relatively low strategic importance.

According to the report, the Israeli submarine INS Drakon was in the area conducting a "test voyage" about ten days ago.

It is possible that the Russian ship collected information on the submarine’s acoustic signature as detected by naval radar.

The INS Drakon is considered the most expensive combat weapon in the hands of the IDF, and each submarine is valued at approximately 550 million euros.

Sub's specifications kept secret

The submarine became operational in the Navy last summer, and its specifications are kept secret.

According to the report, at the beginning of the month the submarine refueled, suggesting that it may have embarked on an operational mission recently.

In April, foreign media reported that Israel is developing new missiles for Dolphin submarines, including a vertical launch system.

If the report is accurate, these missiles, which will be on the new submarine INS Drakon, are ballistic missiles launched from the submarine alongside cruise missiles.

This represents a significant upgrade in Israel's missile capabilities, seemingly involving a new missile with a very long range, possibly a smaller version of the Jericho 3 missile launched from submarines.

According to reports, the Drakon submarine has the capability to launch 4-6 such missiles.

The Palestinian Plan For 'The Day After' In Gaza: To Kill More Jews And Destroy Israel - Bassam Tawil

by Bassam Tawil

Any strategy the Biden administration proposes for the day after the war in the Gaza Strip is bound to fail.... Any legitimate discussion about what the day after looks like in the Gaza Strip must address the radical and Islamist elements in Palestinian society.

  • The Palestinians, meanwhile, appear to have their own ideas about what should happen the day after the war in Gaza: they want to murder even more Jews and carry on the Jihad (holy war) to destroy Israel. Rebuilding the Gaza Strip is not a top priority for many Palestinians. Their primary focus lies in providing support to Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations that aim to destroy the sole homeland of the Jewish people.

  • Hamas says its plan is to "keep the flame of resistance burning.... the [resistance] will not end and will not be extinguished until the comprehensive liberation and the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

  • Hamas refers to a variety of terrorist actions as "resistance." These include suicide bombings, stabbings, car-rammings, shootings, firing rockets, gang rapes, and beheadings. This is the only form of "resistance" Hamas has known and practiced since its founding 36 years ago. As far as Hamas is concerned...[a]ll Jews are "settlers" who need to be killed or expelled from their state.

  • As Hamas openly states in its charter... "There is no solution for the Palestinian question expect through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals, and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors."

  • Hamas... is, not surprisingly, also opposed to any plan that seeks to remove it from power in the Gaza Strip. As long as Hamas's military capabilities are not totally eliminated, neither the Palestinian Authority nor the Arab countries will take over administration of the Gaza Strip.

  • The only plan Hamas (and many Palestinians) believes in is one that calls on all Muslims to undertake Jihad against Israel. For this reason, the Biden administration is misguided in thinking that Hamas, which enjoys broad support among the Palestinians, would approve of any plan for the day after in the Gaza Strip that does not view terrorism as the only means of eradicating Israel and ethnically cleansing the Jewish people.

  • The [Palestinian Center For Policy and Survey Research] poll also found that satisfaction with Hamas's performance has increased to 75%.

  • Any strategy the Biden administration proposes for the day after the war in the Gaza Strip is bound to fail.... Any legitimate discussion about what the day after looks like in the Gaza Strip must address the radical and Islamist elements in Palestinian society.

  • "The possibility of defeating Israel is very real...and the possibility of liberating Palestine is very great... Any other option will certainly be rejected, especially if it is accompanied by any non-Palestinian security presence. The Palestinians will consider it a new form of occupation, regardless of the identity of these forces." — Bassam Naim, senior Hamas official, to Al-Jazeera.

  • "Israel is a country that has no place on our land.... We must remove it because it constitutes a security, military and political catastrophe to the Arab and Islamic nation.... We must teach Israel a lesson, and we will do it twice and three times. The Al-Aqsa Flood is just the first time, and there will be a second, a third, a fourth...." – Ghazi Hamad, senior Hamas official, Lebanese TV channel LBC, October 24, 2023.

The Palestinians appear to have their own ideas about what should happen the day after the war in Gaza: they want to murder even more Jews and carry on the Jihad (holy war) to destroy Israel. Pictured: Hamas terrorists on their way into Israel from Gaza Strip, on their mission to murder Jews, on the morning of October 7, 2023. (Photo by Said Khatib/AFP via Getty Images)

The Biden administration says it will soon reveal its plans for the Gaza Strip's future in the aftermath of the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which the terrorist organization murdered 1,200 Israeli, wounded thousands more and kidnapping more than 240 Israelis, including babies, women and the elderly. Half of the Israeli hostages, only 50 of whom may still be alive, are still being held in the Gaza Strip by Hamas terrorists and "ordinary" Palestinians.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on June 12:

"In the coming weeks, we will put forward proposals for the key elements of a 'day after plan' including concrete ideas for how to manage governance, security, reconstruction. That plan is key to turning a ceasefire into an enduring end to the conflict, but also turning an end to the war to a just and durable peace and using that peace as a foundation for building more integrated, more stable and prosperous region,"

The Palestinians, meanwhile, appear to have their own ideas about what should happen the day after the war in Gaza: they want to murder even more Jews and carry on the Jihad (holy war) to destroy Israel. Rebuilding the Gaza Strip is not a top priority for many Palestinians. Their primary focus lies in providing support to Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations that aim to destroy the sole homeland of the Jewish people.

Hamas, buoyed by its popularity among the Palestinians, seems certain that after the war it will continue to rule the Gaza Strip. In addition to preserving its rule over the Gaza Strip, Hamas says its plan is to "keep the flame of resistance burning in the face of Israeli, its fascist government, and the herds of settlers, in all parts of the homeland because the [resistance] will not end and will not be extinguished until the comprehensive liberation and the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

Hamas refers to a variety of terrorist actions as "resistance." These include suicide bombings, stabbings, car-rammings, shootings, firing rockets, gang-rapes, and beheadings. This is the only form of "resistance" Hamas has known and practiced since its founding 36 years ago. As far as Hamas is concerned, there is no difference between a Jew living in a settlement in the West Bank or in Tel Aviv. All Jews are "settlers" who need to be killed or expelled from their state.

When Hamas talks about "comprehensive liberation," it means the elimination of Israel, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. As Hamas openly states in its charter:

"Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." (Introduction)

"Hamas believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered. It, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that." (Article 11)

"There is no solution for the Palestinian question expect through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals, and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors." (Article 13)

Hamas continues to reject any peace plans or proposals for solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The terrorist group is, not surprisingly, also opposed to any plan that seeks to remove it from power in the Gaza Strip. As long as Hamas's military capabilities are not totally eliminated, neither the Palestinian Authority nor the Arab countries will take over administration of the Gaza Strip.

The only plan Hamas (and many Palestinians) believes in is one that calls on all Muslims to undertake Jihad against Israel. For this reason, the Biden administration is misguided in thinking that Hamas, which enjoys broad support among the Palestinians, would approve of any plan for the "day after" in the Gaza Strip that does not view terrorism as the only means of eradicating Israel and ethnically cleansing the Jewish people.

A recent poll conducted by the Palestinian Center For Policy and Survey Research (PSR) showed that 56% of the Palestinians are convinced that Hamas will continue to rule the Gaza Strip after the war. Only 11% believe that a new Palestinian Authority with an elected president, parliament and government will be in control.

When asked who the public would prefer to control the Gaza Strip after the war, 61% said it was Hamas, 16% chose a new Palestinian Authority with an elected president, parliament and government, 6% chose the current PA without its current leader, Mahmoud Abbas, now in the 19th year of his four-year term.

For the third time since the October 7 atrocities committed by Hamas and thousands of "ordinary" Palestinians, the PSR poll asked the Palestinians what they thought of Hamas's decision to launch the attack on Israel. Two thirds, compared to 71% in March 2024 and 72% in December 2023, say it was "correct."

The poll also found that satisfaction with Hamas's performance has increased to 75%.

Any strategy the Biden administration proposes for the day after the war in the Gaza Strip is bound to fail, as evidenced by the huge support for Hamas and the crimes it committed against Israelis on October 7. Any legitimate discussion about what the day after looks like in the Gaza Strip must address the radical and Islamist elements in Palestinian society.

Emboldened by the Biden administration's growing pressure on Israel to end the war, Hamas leaders are convinced that they are on their way to achieving victory. "The possibility of defeating Israel is very real, possible and available, and the possibility of liberating Palestine is very great," senior Hamas official Bassam Naim told the Qatari-owned Al-Jazeera network when asked about the day after the war in the Gaza Strip.

"This may have costs, but this is the nature of things. Any other option will certainly be rejected, especially if it is accompanied by any non-Palestinian security presence. The Palestinians will consider it a new form of occupation, regardless of the identity of these forces."

Asked if the Palestinian Authority would be allowed to return to the Gaza Strip, the Hamas official responded:

"The Palestinian Authority, under the current circumstances, is unable to manage the Palestinian people in the West Bank, and therefore it is too weak to play this role in the Gaza Strip."

Mohammed al-Hindi, a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) official, was also asked about his organization's vision for the future of the Gaza Strip. PIJ, he said, will not abandon the armed struggle against Israel and will never accept the Biden administration's plan for establishing a Palestinian state next to Israel.

"The outcome of this conflict will decide the fate of the entire region, including Palestine and Israel," al-Hindi argued.

"No one should be tempted to fall into the deception of a one- or two-state solution. In the wake of the strategic defeat of the [Israeli] enemy, there is talk again about the two-state solution. The American administration affirms at every opportunity that a Palestinian state cannot be established except through direct negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel. Some Palestinians and Arabs are ready to engage in the context of this deception to circumvent the consequences of the Al-Aqsa Flood [the name Hamas uses to call its October 7 atrocities]."

Finally, if one wants evidence of what the day after the war will look like, one needs to listen to what Ghazi Hamad, another prominent figure in Hamas, said shortly after October 7. Celebrating the murder of Israelis, Hamad swore that, given the chance, Hamas would carry out similar crimes repeatedly until Israel is exterminated.

"Israel is a country that has no place on our land," Hamad said in an interview with Lebanese TV channel LBC, and translated and published by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

"We must remove that country, because it constitutes a security, military, and political catastrophe to the Arab and Islamic nation, and must be finished. We are not ashamed to say this, with full force. We must teach Israel a lesson, and we will do this again and again. The Al-Aqsa Flood is just the first time, and there will be a second, a third, a fourth, because we have the determination, the resolve, and the capabilities to fight. Will we have to pay a price? Yes, and we are ready to pay it. We are called a nation of martyrs, and we are proud to sacrifice martyrs."

Biden's foreign policy record gives Trump ammunition ahead of debate - Ben Whedon

by Ben Whedon

Trump, for his part, has long cast himself as a peacemaker in contrast to Biden’s interventionist approach to global affairs and is likely to press the incumbent commander-in-chief about the uptick in global tensions under his watch.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are expected to square off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 election next Thursday and Trump appears poised to hammer his opponent on foreign affairs.

The pair negotiated their participation in the debate over a string of social media challenges to one another and have circumvented the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has traditionally managed the contests. Foreign policy is expected to feature prominently in the discussion amid the backdrop of conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and rising tensions in the Pacific.

Trump, for his part, has long cast himself as a peacemaker in contrast to Biden’s interventionist approach to global affairs and is likely to press the incumbent commander-in-chief about the uptick in global tensions under his watch.

During the Trump administration, Washington attempted a diplomatic rapprochement with North Korea, sought to foster friendly relations between Israel and its neighbors, and negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Under his successor, however, most of those developments have either been stalled or upended, with conflicts erupting across those regions, potentially handing Trump considerable ammunition against Biden in the debate. The campaign, for his part, has been clear that Trump will use it.

“President Trump will contrast his strong record on the world stage that encouraged peace around the world with Joe Biden's weakness that has emboldened our adversaries, weakened our allies, and led to war from Ukraine to the Middle East,” Trump Campaign National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Just the News.

North Korea

Known colloquially as the “Hermit Kingdom,” North Korea has been a geopolitical pariah for decades, maintaining formal relations with a limited number of strategic partners and attracting international concern over its nuclear program and bellicose rhetoric towards its southern counterpart.

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un generally developed personally amicable relations while Washington pursued a diplomatic pact intended to curb the nation’s nuclear and military ambitions. Those efforts resulted in a 2018 summit in Singapore between Trump and Kim, as well as a 2019 summit in Vietnam, though they did not achieve a formal agreement on denuclearization.

The Biden administration has since resumed military drills with Seoul, which Trump had largely curtailed, resulting in a return to frosty relations. The U.S. and South Korea held their first large-scale drills in August of 2022 after a five-year pause.

Tensions between the North and South have escalated dramatically in recent years, moreover. Earlier this month, for instance, Pyongyang sent trash-laden balloons across the border in response to the south’s blasting K-Pop music across the border.

This week, moreover, Kim signed a mutual defense pact with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which the latter called a "truly breakthrough document.” The development appears to have locked Pyongyang firmly in an adversarial camp against Washington and reversed much of the prior administration’s initiatives.

Afghanistan

The Trump administration in 2020 negotiated a withdrawal agreement to remove U.S. forces from Afghanistan after roughly 20 years. The terms of Trump’s agreement required both the Taliban and Afghan government to meet certain criteria for U.S. help to establish "a peaceful, negotiated government in Afghanistan without U.S. troop presence," former Trump advisor Kash Patel told the John Solomon Reports podcast in 2021.

Under the Biden administration, the U.S. went ahead with the withdrawal, but did so amid a Taliban offensive that saw the armed group seize control of the country. The conflict concluded with tens of thousands of Afghan allies and American personnel evacuated out of Hamid Karzai airport in Kabul. During the evacuation, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a bombing on the airport’s Abbey Gate.

Though a report from United States Central Command (CENTCOM) concluded that the incident was not preventable, the families of some of the victims have nonetheless blamed Biden for his handling of the withdrawal. Gold Star father Steve Nikoui this year interrupted Biden’s State of the Union address shouting “Abbey Gate!” His son, Kareem, died in the attack.

Patel further excoriated the administration for ignoring the detailed plans he says the Trump administration left behind and asserted that Washington’s handover of a key airbase set the stage for the Taliban’s eventual victory.

“We would not have ever relinquished control of Bagram Airfield, because that is our command and control node for the entire region," he said. The Biden administration has largely attempted to blame the Trump administration and a report released last year insisted that "[d]uring the transition from the Trump Administration to the Biden Administration, the outgoing Administration provided no plans for how to conduct the final withdrawal or to evacuate Americans and Afghan allies.”

"We actually did not leave them a deadline," Patel insisted. "It was a negotiation between the U.S. government, the Taliban, and the Afghans. And if that date was not to work for this incoming administration, they could have moved it. But what they chose to do was break the entire agreement. And then they thought, since the adults were back in Washington, D.C., and Blinken and Biden were leading the charge, the world will just fall into place for them.”

Israel

Trump’s tenure also witnessed the signing of the Abraham Accords, a historic set of diplomatic agreements that saw a number of Muslim-majority nations establish formal diplomatic ties with Israel after decades of hostility. The relatively quiet period in the Levant stood in contrast to the current situation, which has seen geopolitical tensions escalate sharply in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamas raid that triggered the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Biden’s handling of the issue has drawn criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, with many of his progressive detractors demanding he press Israel to limit civilian casualties and his Republican opponents insisting he hamstrung Jerusalem in its quest to eliminate Hamas. He notably attracted Republican scrutiny in May over a threat to hold up arms shipments to Israel if it went forward with an invasion of Rafah, to which many civilians fled amid Israeli military operations.

"What Biden is doing with respect to Israel is disgraceful," Trump said in May in response to Biden’s threat over the Rafah situation. "If any Jewish person voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves. He's totally abandoned Israel. I guess he feels good about it because he did it as a political decision.”

Biden has further attracted criticism from the left, including from Arab Americans and Muslims, which are traditionally Democratic constituencies. In October of last year, for instance, the National Muslim Democratic Council warned Biden that his “unconditional support [for Israel], encompassing funding and armaments, has played a significant role in perpetuating the violence that is causing civilian casualties and has eroded trust in voters who previously put their faith in you.”

Muslim leaders in Michigan -- with a large Muslim population --  last December launched the #AbandonBiden National Coalition in response to his handling of the conflict. Biden ultimately won the Michigan Democratic primary, though 16.2% of participants cast their votes for “uncommitted” in what was widely seen as a protest vote.

Russia

Trump, for years, faced allegations of collusion with the Russian government to win the 2016 presidential election. Though now-thoroughly debunked, Trump continues to face claims that he is close to Putin.

The former president, for his part, has made much of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, contending that such a development would not have occurred on his watch and that Putin’s aggression signaled his disregard for Biden’s leadership. Russia invaded Ukraine in February of 2022 and the conflict has persisted with no signs of a ceasefire. The invasion followed 10-years of internal conflict in Ukraine after the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea.

"If I were in Office, this deadly Ukraine situation would never have happened!" Trump said shortly after the invasion began. "[Putin] was going to be satisfied with a piece [of Ukraine] and now he sees the weakness and the incompetence and the stupidity of this administration," he said the same month.

“Putin only invaded Ukraine, because he has no respect for Biden. Would have never happened under the Trump Administration, and for four years it didn’t happen!” he said in March of this year.

Biden has stood by his support for aiding Kyiv, even amid signs of mounting Russian gains in the eastern Ukrainian provinces. Earlier this month, he signed a 10-year security agreement with Ukraine with the aim of strengthening the nation’s “credible defense and deterrence capabilities for the long term.”

'What constitutes a border crisis?' Sanctuary cities have found out - Tom Gantert

by Tom Gantert

Since Joe Biden took office in January 2021, about 12 million illegal border crossings have been documented.

(The Center Square) -

In March 2021, the Los Angeles Times published a story with a headline that asked, "What constitutes a border crisis?"

The story quoted then House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy as saying, "There is no other way to claim it than a Biden border crisis."

Then the LA Times asked, "But is it a crisis?"

Just a month later in April 2021, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement about his city being a sanctuary city.

“New York City is proud to be a welcoming and inclusive city for immigrants,” de Blasio said at the time.

The debate in the U.S. on migrants took off in April 2022 when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott decided to take a stand against President Joe Biden and what Abbott called an open border policy.

Abbott stated that Biden's repeal of Title 42 – a pandemic-era policy that allowed the government to quickly expel arriving asylum seekers – had created an "unprecedented surge of illegal aliens" into the country with as many as 18,000 apprehensions a day.

Abbott said that Texas border towns were being overrun by migrants and were overwhelmed. His solution was to bus many of the arriving migrants to sanctuary cities across the U.S.

In August 2022, when the first bus of migrants leaving Texas arrived in New York, Abbott was clear why he had his state paid for the trip. New York had a new mayor by then.

“New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott stated in a news release. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief."

And just over a year later, New York Gov. Kathleen Hochul was on CNN in September 2023 pleading with immigrants to “go somewhere else.”

How it has played out was not lost on liberal comedian Bill Maher.

“Could everyone just stop the posturing?” Maher said on a July 2023 podcast with Sharon Osbourne. “Don’t pretend that you love migrants so much and then when we send them to you, you don’t like them. You know? You’re full of [expletive]. And we can see that. Yeah, you liked them when it wasn’t your problem because you’re not a border state. And then when they show up in Chicago and New York, you’re like ‘What the [expletive] are we going to do with these people?’”

New York wasn’t the only destination for Abbott's buses. He also targeted other sanctuary cities, such as Washington, D.C, Chicago and Denver.

The New York Times published an article in July 2023 that had a headline that asked, "Is Texas' Busing Responsible for the Migrant Crisis Across Cities?"

On June 14, Abbott’s office stated that it had bused 119,200 migrants to six sanctuary cities since August 2022. That included 45,700 migrants to New York City and 36,900 migrants to Chicago since August 2022. There were also 19,200 migrants bused to Denver since May 2023 and 12,500 migrants bused to Washington D.C. since April 2022.

But Abbott wasn't alone in busing migrants from the border to locations throughout the country. The Democratic-run city of El Paso also bused migrants north.

Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs stated in September 2023 that Arizona was "overwhelmed" by the flow of migrants into her state. Arizona spent $10.5 million transporting 10,247 migrants out of state as of September 2023.

That's just part of a bigger surge of migrants into the U.S. Since Biden took office in January 2021, about 12 million illegal border crossings have been documented, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data and a compilation of "gotaway" data obtained from border agents by The Center Square. Gotaways is the official CBP term to describe those who illegally crossed the border between ports of entry but who were not apprehended. CBP does not publicly release "gotaway" data.

The increase in migrants has hammered the budgets of sanctuary cities.

Washington, D.C. created an Office of Migrant Services with an initial start-up cost of $10 million in 2022. In 2025, the city budgeted $39 million for that office.

Chicago has spent $299 million on migrants since 2022, according to a March 2024 report by the Illinois Policy Institute, and that does not include the hundreds of millions of dollars state taxpayers have paid for costs such as migrant health care.

New York City Mayor Adams said in August 2023 the migrant crisis may cost his city $12 billion over three years.

The city of Denver stated in April 2024 that the increase in migrants has cost it $63 million.

The cost to taxpayers in the state of Texas was $13.4 billion in 2023, according to the Federation For American Immigration Reform. Only California had a higher cost at $30.9 billion.

Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation For American Immigration Reform, said Abbott's busing strategy has worked.

"His busing policy exposed the hypocrisy of many sanctuary jurisdiction politicians who extolled the virtues of mass immigration regardless of its legality, but are not so happy when they actually have to deal with the real impact of large numbers of migrants," Mehlman said in an email to The Center Square. "So long as it was someone else’s problem, they were happy to virtue signal and criticize others. Once it became their problem, they demanded that Abbott and others stop sending them migrants. For years, these sanctuary proponents claimed that illegal aliens were a benefit to the country, but are now demanding federal assistance to manage to cover their costs, exposing the fact that illegal immigration imposes huge fiscal costs."

Hezbollah threatens war ‘without rules’ - JNS

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group overnight Saturday threatening to wage war against Israel “with no restraints.”

In a video message, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said, “In case an inclusive war is imposed on Lebanon, the resistance will fight without restraints, without rules, without limits.”

The minute-long clip then shows footage of various sites in central Israel, along with their GPS coordinates.

“Whoever thinks of war against us, will regret it,” the video ends.

Last week, U.S. presidential envoy Amos Hochstein visited Israel and Lebanon in an attempt to prevent all-out war on the Jewish state’s northern border.

Hochstein met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, telling the premier that de-escalation was possible but that there was no “magic solution” to the situation, which he said was largely dependent on what happens with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The White House official reportedly rejected Jerusalem’s demand that a diplomatic deal to end the conflict in the north be based on the implementation of U.N. Security Resolution 1701—which was adopted to end the Second Lebanon War in 2006 and calls for a demilitarized zone from the Blue Line to the Litani River some 18 miles to the north.

Instead, he said it should include a range of options, including moving Hezbollah six miles from the border. He stressed that the United States was concerned about further escalation and called for calm on both sides.

Hochstein traveled to Beirut on Tuesday, including for talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a powerful ally of Hezbollah.

“The conflict along the Blue Line [the de facto border] between Israel and Hezbollah has gone on for long enough,” Hochstein said after the meeting with Berri. “Innocent people are dying, property is damaged, families are shattered and the Lebanese economy continues to decline.

“The country is suffering for no good reason. It’s in everyone’s interest to resolve it quickly and diplomatically,” added the American envoy.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has attacked northern Israel nearly every day since joining the war in support of Hamas on Oct. 8, killing more than 20 people and causing widespread damage. Tens of thousands of Israeli civilians remain internally displaced due to the ongoing violence.
