Israel’s shield for Syria’s Druze and the regional shakeup no one expected - analysis - Herb Keinon

by Herb Keinon

Before Assad’s fall, Netanyahu never would have considered extending Israel’s protection to the Syrian Druze. That he is doing so now underscores how much has changed.

Israel has not yet achieved “absolute victory” in Gaza – a fact painfully evident each time Hamas releases hostages in staged propaganda displays. Yet its military actions over the past 16 months have reshaped the Middle East.

Two days after the October 7 massacre, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “We will change the face of the Middle East.” On Sunday, in a speech to soldiers graduating from the IDF Ground Forces officers’ course, he reminded his audience of that statement.

Indeed, this transformation is underway. Its extent became clear on Sunday, when Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun made statements that would have been unthinkable just months ago.

Netanyahu, in his speech to the soldiers in which he laid out Israel’s policy in the region, turned to Syria.

The comment that attracted the most attention regarding Syria was his declaration that Israel would not allow Syria’s new army or the axis that led to former president Bashar al-Assad’s fall to “enter the area south of Damascus.”

He also demanded “the full demilitarization of southern Syria from troops of the new Syrian regime in Quneitra, Daraa, and Suwayda provinces.”

That is a significant policy statement. Then, almost as an afterthought, the prime minister added that Israel would “not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria.”

In other words, Netanyahu spread Israel’s protective canopy over the Druze in the area in Syria near the border, called Jabal Druze. This is the first time an Israeli official has publicly made such an offer, and by doing so, he sent a clear message to Syria’s new rulers: Harming the Druze means confronting Israel.

Why? What interest does Israel have in sticking its neck out for a Syrian minority that has historically been hostile and supportive of the Assad regime?

Israeli Druze community

The most obvious reason is that this is important to the Israeli Druze community. Many have relatives on the other side of the border – and Israel feels that it owes its own Druze a debt because of the sacrifices that community has made for Israel in the IDF over the years, including during the current war.

While the Druze inside the 1967 lines are full citizens who fight for the country, those on the Golan – though offered citizenship when Israel annexed the Golan Heights in 1981 – long refused it. They feared that aligning with Israel could endanger their families in Syria or backfire if Israel, as was widely discussed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, withdrew from the Golan in exchange for peace with Damascus.

Even before Assad’s fall, however, a shift was under way. Over the past decade, more Golan Druze have begun identifying with Israel. By the end of 2023, about one-fifth of some 27,000 Druze on the Golan had acquired Israeli citizenship.

Assad’s downfall has accelerated this trend, and now, even some Druze on the Syrian side of the border are interested in being incorporated into Israel.

Soon after Assad’s fall, videos went viral on social media of Syrian Druze speaking in favor of joining Israel. This was less about affinity for Israel and more about fear – fear of what Islamist factions might do to them if they took control.

During the Syrian civil war, the Druze suffered attacks from ISIS, including a 2018 massacre in Suwayda, where more than 200 were killed and at least two dozen taken hostage. Understandably, many now view Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, with deep concern due to his Islamist ties.

Before Assad’s fall, Netanyahu never would have considered extending Israel’s protection to the Syrian Druze. That he is doing so now underscores how much has changed.

During and just after the Six Day War, then-cabinet minister Yigal Allon floated the idea of Israel pushing for a Druze state in the Druze areas of Syria and the Golan that would serve as a buffer.

“I dreamt the dream of the Druse republic, which would spread in southern Syria including the Golan Heights and would serve as a buffer state between us, Syria and Jordan,” he wrote in his memoirs.

That idea never gained traction, but Netanyahu’s offer of protection to the Syrian Druze is an indication that the concept of an alliance with Syria’s Druze has not vanished.

Then there is Lebanon.

Many marched in support of Hezbollah

On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people turned out for the funeral of assassinated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. That so many marched in support of Hezbollah – joined by Iranian, Iraqi Shi’a, and Houthi senior officials – was no surprise.

What was surprising was how Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was received when he met with Aoun.

The meeting was cordial, but afterward, the Lebanese president’s office posted this statement on X: “Lebanon is tired of others’ wars, and the unity of the Lebanese is the best way to confront any loss or aggression. Lebanon paid a heavy price for the Palestinian cause. It supports what was issued by the recent Riyadh summit regarding the two-state solution.”

In other words, Aoun bluntly told the Iranians – who, through Hezbollah and with a lifeline from Assad’s Syria, have long dominated Lebanon – that Beirut no longer wants to be a pawn in Iran’s long game against the Jewish state.

Even his endorsement of a two-state solution was significant, since implicit in it was an acknowledgment of Israel’s existence, something Hezbollah never accepted, remaining committed – like Hamas and Iran – to Israel’s destruction.

Both developments signal a changed Middle East – a new Mideast ushered in by IDF victories in this seven-front war, even if “absolute victory” over Hamas has yet to be achieved in Gaza.

Trump imposes sanctions on Iranian trade for 'maximum pressure campaign' - Jerusalem Post Staff

by Jerusalem Post Staff

The sanctions were being done to "stem the flow of revenue the regime uses to fund destabilizing activities."

The US has decided to impose sanctions on eight entities engaged in Iranian petroleum and petrochemical trade and is identifying eight vessels as their blocked property, the State Department announced on Tuesday.

The State Department cited the reason for the sanctions as being part of US President Donald Trump's "maximum pressure campaign on Iran."

It added that the "Iranian regime continues to destabilize global security with its nuclear threat, ballistic missile program, and support for terrorist groups."

"Iran’s oil exports are enabled by a network of illicit shipping facilitators in multiple jurisdictions who, through obfuscation and deception, load and transport Iranian oil for sale to buyers in Asia," the Department of State explained.

The sanctions were, therefore, being done to "stem the flow of revenue the regime uses to fund these destabilizing activities," the State Department said.

Who will be affected by the sanctions?

The State Department listed some of the following entities that will be sanctioned for "knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the sale or transport of petroleum or petroleum products from Iran."

Kangan Petro Refinery Company, Cosmos Lines Inc, Alkonost Maritime DMCC, Austinship Management Private Limited. Oceanend Shipping Ltd., IMS Ltd, and Octane Energy Group FZCO were on the list.

The State Department said the result of the sanctions will be "in accordance with E.O. 13846, all property and interests in property of the designated persons described above that are in the United States or in possession or control of US persons are blocked and must be reported to the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)."

The State Department added that "additionally, all entities and individuals that have ownership, either directly or indirectly, 50 percent or more by one or more blocked persons are also blocked."

The prohibition will include contributing or providing the blocked people with funds, goods, or services.

"The ultimate goal of sanctions is not to punish, but to bring about a positive change in behavior," the State Department emphasized in its statement.

New England becomes ground zero for fight against males in girls' sports, secret gender transitions - Greg Piper

by Greg Piper

Appeals court with no GOP nominees says parents have no right to "preferred educational experience for their child," knowing their gender identity. Female athletes try to intervene in transgender challenge to NH girls' sports law.

Four centuries after founding New England, puritans are still squeamish about sex – but it's now the biological fact, not the procreative act, that bothers them.

The politically blue, conventionally secular region has become ground zero for legal battles over sex versus gender identity amid President Trump's executive orders, parents' fights against school districts and transgender students' fights against New England's quasi-red redoubt.

In less than a week, a Boston-based federal appeals court upheld school policies that hide students' gender transitions from parents, two federal agencies opened sex discrimination investigations of Maine that could halt its federal funding, and female athletes sought to intervene in a challenge to New Hampshire law that limits girls' school sports to females.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which lost its only Republican-nominated judge in 2022, ruled against parents Stephen Foote and Marissa Silvestri in their lawsuit alleging Ludlow Public Schools actively lying to them about not socially transitioning their daughter.

While they acknowledge the "fundamental importance of the rights asserted by the Parents to be informed of, and to direct, significant aspects of their child's life … parental rights are not unlimited," the three-judge panel wrote.

They may not "invoke the Due Process Clause to create a preferred educational experience for their child in public school" because "our pluralistic society assigns those curricular and administrative decisions to the expertise of school officials, charged with the responsibility of educating children," the ruling says.

Hiding gender transitions "does not restrict parental rights in a way courts have recognized as a violation of the guarantees of substantive due process."

$100 million for University of Maine at risk

The Bay State was an immediate target for the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, which opened a Title IX investigation of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association – just a day after Trump's "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" order – for requiring girls' teams to let in males who "bona fide" identify as girls.

OCR also noted a Massachusetts girls' basketball team forfeited a game a year ago after an allegedly male player on the opposing team, playing in accordance with the MIAA handbook, reportedly injured three girls in the first half. Video shows one of the injuries.

Massachusetts has actually let males compete against females in school sports for five decades if the formers' schools don't have a boy's team, as noted by Boston Globe opinion writer Carine Hajjar, who called on the feds to scrutinize that law as they investigate MIAA.

She noted a female athlete went to the hospital in 2023 after a male on the opposing field hockey team hit her in the face with the ball, which prompted the girls' school district to let female players and coaches opt out of games with teams that include a male.

Another girls' field hockey team with a male won the MIAA Division 2 Championship and the male was named conference MVP, likely taking a scholarship from a female, Hajjar said.

OCR followed with investigations of the Minnesota State High School League and the California Interscholastic Federation. Last Thursday it praised the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association for scrapping their trans participation policies in the days after the Minnesota and California threats.

President Trump's exchange with Maine Gov. Janet Mills at a Friday White House meeting with governors, after the Maine Principals' Association flatly refused to follow his order, appears to have prompted DOE and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to launch Title IX investigations.

"Are you not going to comply with it?" Trump asked the Democrat, to which she responded "I’m complying with state and federal laws." He threatened to cut all of Maine's federal funding, she said "see you in court," and Trump predicted he'd not only win but Mills would ruin her political future because "your population doesn’t want men playing in women’s sports."

"Several hours later," according to News Center Maine, DOE's OCR said it was investigating the Maine Department of Education for allegedly letting males compete in girls' sports and denying "female athletes female-only intimate facilities," and a Maine school district for letting "at least one male student to compete in girls’ categories."

USDA joined the Pine Tree State pile-on Saturday, putting the University of Maine and its $100 million in USDA funding in danger due to the "blatant disregard" of the state's leaders for Trump's order. The notice of compliance review tells the university Title IX is "broader then just athletics" and warns "additional funding may be in jeopardy."

UMaine System spokesperson Samantha Warren emphasized to WGME the agency hadn't accused the university itself of wrongdoing and said it will "continue to comply with all relevant State and Federal laws and cooperate with any compliance reviews."

Mills blasted the DOE review Friday as a show trial whose outcome is "all but predetermined" and tried to deflect the focus away from the subject of males in girls' sports. She hasn't responded to the USDA review of UMaine.

"Today, the President of the United States has targeted one particular group on one particular issue which Maine law has addressed" but he won't stop there, she said. "Will it be because of your race or your religion? Will it be because you look different or think differently?"

Judge calls gender identity 'immutable'

Transgender students Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle, now 16 and 15, filed an amended complaint Feb. 12 adding Trump, DOE and the Justice Department to their lawsuit against New Hampshire for HB 1205, which prohibits males in girls' sports in which "selection for such teams is based upon competitive skill or the activity involved is a contact sport."

Both are natal males who claim they will not "experience physical changes caused by testosterone, including the muscular development characteristic of males," because of their puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The New Hampshire Bulletin wrote a glowing profile of Turmelle this month, accepting the student's false claim that Turmelle is "female."

U.S. District Judge Landya McCafferty, nominated by President Obama, blocked the law as to the plaintiffs last fall, identifying the subjective and often-fluid state of gender identity as an "immutable characteristic" on par with sex and race.

Female Athletes Unified, which defends female-only sports, has members in New Hampshire and was covered by an earlier injunction against the Biden administration's gender identity rewrite of  Title IX, asked the court for permission to intervene in the legislation Friday.

One of its members has competed against Tirrell on her high school girls' soccer team and an "indoor soccer league," the filing says. Another played a team with a "male goalie."

By approving their first amended complaint last fall and "especially the second one" this month, McCafferty has "changed the game," FAU says. It's now a facial challenge to both state law and "the executive orders applying across the country."

"FAU’s members have lost to males in school sports and have lost their privacy rights to males entering private spaces," the filing says. "They expect both to happen again" and must be allowed to defend their interests in protecting the state law and Trump's orders, whether McCafferty "ultimately agrees with FAU on the merits."

Democrats charged with election fraud amid party's efforts to obstruct election integrity measures - Natalia Mittelstadt

by Natalia Mittelstadt

Many prominent Democrats still claim voter fraud is not a real issue unless they are on the losing side, in which case the elections were "stolen."

Democrats are facing new charges of election fraud going back to 2021, despite their party pushing back on election integrity and voter fraud claims since the 2020 presidential election.

While Democrats have long criticized Republicans who are concerned about election integrity by smearing them with the pejorative label “election deniers,” new allegations regarding election fraud are being made against Democrats. Five Democratic Party members in Bridgeport, Conn., and Philadelphia have been criminally charged with numerous counts of voter fraud on both the state and federal levels regarding mail-in ballots.

Bridgeport had to redo primary and general elections last year after evidence surfaced of alleged ballot harvesting in the Democratic mayoral primary in September 2023.

Ballot harvesting

The incumbent Democratic mayor, whose supporter was the reason for the redo elections after allegedly committing ballot harvesting, won the redo elections. The mayor denied any knowledge of the alleged ballot harvesting. The Democratic Connecticut secretary of the state sent multiple referrals of alleged election malfeasance to State Elections Enforcement Commission from the redo general election last February.

Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee Vice Chairperson Wanda Geter-Pataky, and Bridgeport Democratic City Council Members Alfredo Castillo, Jazmarie Melendez, and Maria Pereira were all criminally charged, as well as a woman from Stratford. Geter-Pataky has the most criminal charges against her, with 92 in total, including 42 counts of Possession of Ballots and Envelopes Restricted.

Other charges filed against the five people accused include fraudulent voting, being present while voters filled out those ballots, and misrepresenting who is eligible to vote absentee.

Castillo and Geter-Pataky were criminally charged last year for allegedly taking possession of voters’ absentee ballots during Bridgeport’s 2019 Democratic mayoral primary.

Being targeted for “political retribution”

“The Office of the Chief State’s Attorney takes allegations of voter fraud seriously and I commend the Statewide Prosecution Bureau’s investigative efforts that resulted in these arrests,” Chief State’s Attorney Patrick Griffin said in a statement on Friday.

“To protect the integrity of our voting process in Connecticut, it is important that our elections are fair and free from fraudulent activity and criminal intent. These prosecutions hopefully send the message that deters tampering with election results in the future in Connecticut.”

The respective lawyers for Geter-Pataky and Pereira declined to comment when reached by the Associated Press on Friday. Pereira said while leaving the police station on Friday that she was going to win the case. Castillo’s attorney said his client plans to plead not guilty.

Melendez’s lawyer said that his client “categorically denies the baseless allegation” and is being targeted for “political retribution.” He also said that since Melendez was only charged with mispresenting people’s eligibility to vote absentee, prosecutors would have to prove that she deliberately did it, which he believes it “highly, highly doubtful” that Melendez did so.

The woman from Stratford who was charged has been unable to be reached for comment. All five charged in the 2023 election matter are to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on March 6th.

“Since the beginning of this investigation, the CT Democratic Party has said the law is clear about how to handle absentee ballots and ensure that voters rights are not violated,” Roberto Alves, the new chairman of the Connecticut Democratic Party, said in a statement on Friday. “If individuals are found guilty of election-related violations, they will be held accountable and have no place in party leadership.”

In Millbourne, a Philadelphia suburb of about 1,200 people, three politicians were indicted by a federal grand jury last Tuesday for attempting to win a 2021 mayoral race by illegally casting about three dozen mail-in ballots.

Allegedly forged voter signatures

Mohammed Nurul Hasan, who was vice president of the borough council, Mohammed Munsur Ali, who had won the Democratic primary for borough council, and Mohammed Rafikul Islam, who lost the Democratic primary that year in seeking to be reelected to the council, all allegedly conspired to register people to vote in the election who lived outside of Millbourne.

Hasan had lost the Democratic mayoral primary that year and ran as a write-in candidate in the general election that fall. He lost the general election, 165 votes to 138. Hasan, Ali, and Islam had mail-in ballots sent to them, then completed and returned the ballots to the Delaware County elections board.

The federal grand jury alleged that Hasan and Ali told friends who lived outside Millbourne to register in the municipality and “that they would not get in trouble as long as they did not vote in another election in November 2021,” according to the indictment. However, other voters were unknowingly registered to vote in Millbourne, per the grand jury.

The three men allegedly forged voter signatures on return envelopes and are charged with fraudulent voter registration, false information in registering, and conspiracy.

Islam’s lawyer, Robert Keller, said Friday that his client is “the least culpable” of the three, according to the indictment, and that Islam is only accused of aiding in the scheme “in a minor way.” Islam has agreed to turn himself in to the court, Keller said.

“He has no prior record. He’s a U.S. citizen. He’s lived an honorable life and we’re going to do everything we can to protect his interests and see what kind of case the government has, and then act accordingly,” he added.

Hasan and Ali could not be reached for comment and did not have lawyers listed.

Jim Allen, the Delaware County elections director, told the Philadelphia Inquirer last week that the prosecutions should be a deterrent to others tempted to commit voter fraud.

“I view this as evidence that investigators are not going to let passage of time or the lack of an impact on the election result prevent them from pursuing the case, however long it takes,” Allen said.

Twice losing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has repeatedly said that the election was "stolen" from her. She has often declared Trump was an “illegitimate president” and suggested that “he knows that he stole the 2016 presidential election."

However, multiple Democrats sued each other over alleged election fraud in 2023 and dozens of them have claimed election fraud and irregularities since at least the 2000 presidential election.

French President Macron tells Trump to 'be careful' in the negotiation process to end Russia's war in Ukraine - Ashley Carnahan

by Ashley Carnahan

Macron says there needs to be lasting security guarantees

French President Emmanuel Macron praised U.S. President Donald Trump for taking steps to end Russia’s war against Ukraine but warned the commander-in-chief to "be careful" in the negotiation process.

"We want peace. And I think the initiative of President Trump is a very positive one. But my message was to say be careful because we need something substantial for Ukraine," he said in an interview from the Blair House Monday on "Special Report."

"I think the arrival of President Trump is a game-changer. And I think he has the deterrence capacity of the U.S. to reengage with Russia."

Macron, who met with Trump at the White House on the third anniversary of Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, said the U.S. and France need to work together to determine lasting future security guarantees.

He emphasized the need for more than just a ceasefire in the war due to previous violations by Russia in 2014 and 2015 with regard to the Minsk Agreements.

World leaders from Sweden, Estonia, Canada, Finland and Denmark met with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv Monday to show their support for the war-torn country.

"We all strive for peace and want to make it as reliable and lasting as possible. Today, we discussed the need for security guarantees for Ukraine and real ways to ensure an end to this Russian aggression and prevent any new one. Peace is needed," Zelenskyy said in a post on X after meeting with key allies.

Macron told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier he sees the possibility of a truce between Russia and Ukraine in the coming weeks.

"[A] truce on air, sea [and] infrastructures," the French president explained. "If it is not respected, it will be the best evidence of the fact that Russia is not serious."

During the truce, Macron suggested there would be negotiations on security guarantees, land, occupied territories and reconstruction.

The Trump administration is working to finalize a rare earth mineral deal with Ukraine that it says will recoup the tens of billions of dollars in aid Washington has sent to Kyiv.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that he considers the proposed deal to be a "win-win" economic partnership between the U.S. and Ukraine that signifies its interest in the country long-term.

Macron said discussions are still ongoing about European countries’ roles in maintaining peace in Ukraine once the war is over.

"We worked very hard together with the UK prime minister to have a French-UK proposal to say we are ready to send troops, not to go to the front line, not to go in confrontation, but to be in some locations, being defined by the treaty, as a presence to maintain this peace and our collective credibility with the US backup and the US backstop."

No, Trump’s Tariffs Will Not Cause Inflation - Spencer P. Morrison

by Spencer P. Morrison

Tariffs won’t break the bank—history shows prices stay steady, and buying American is always an option. The media’s panic over Trump’s tariffs is just another round of misplaced hysteria.

President Trump has imposed 10 percent tariffs on imports from China. Predictably, the media’s chicken littles shrieked that the sky was falling. Tariffs will raise prices! Not only that but the poor will be hardest hit! Just think of the children!

These arguments are easily dismissed as appeals to emotion—they are rhetorical flourishes, devoid of truth and meaning. In reality, both history and logic prove that tariffs will not increase prices in the long run. Rest easy: the sky remains high above your head.

The Time Traveler

Every time President Trump threatens to raise tariffs, the media clucks that American consumers will pay the price. This did not happen last time, and it is unlikely to happen now. Consider the great washing machine debacle of 2018.

In January of 2018, President Trump announced that he would impose a 40 percent tariff on imported washing machines. On top of this, he also imposed additional duties on imported steel and aluminum—lightning occasionally strikes twice.

At the time, liberals lost their collective minds. They lamented that low-income Americans would not be able to afford washing machines. They pontificated that we would be living in a nation of grungy, soiled masses—living caricatures of Pig-Pen from the Peanut’s gang.

Of course, that never happened.

The price of washing machines did not change appreciably over the next few years. This is obvious when looking at the Consumer Price Index (“CPI”). The CPI tracks the prices of over 80,000 consumer goods and services in cities across America. They do this every month. How? They contact stores and obtain actual sale prices.

What did the CPI have to say about the price of washing machines in the aftermath of President Trump’s insidious wave of tariffs? Not much.

In 2018, the price of laundry equipment increased by 6.8 percent, compared to an overall inflation rate of 2.44 percent. In 2019 to date, the price of laundry equipment decreased by 0.48 percent, compared to an expected inflation rate of 2 percent.

Also, consider for a moment that in 2012 the price of laundry equipment increased by 8.56 percent. Tariffs were clearly not to blame for that increase. Further, prices of just about every consumer product increased under President Biden, who roundly rejected tariffs as a matter of principle. Accordingly, it is entirely possible that Trump’s tariffs had no effect on laundry equipment price whatsoever—this may be yet another example of a random walk confusing the Chicken Littles that run our media.

Tariffs For Dummies

The reason that President Trump’s tariffs did not have much (if any) observable effect on consumer prices during his first term—and the reason that they are unlikely to have any effect on consumer prices this time around—is because tariffs are not applied to a product’s retail price, wholesale price, or import price. Instead, tariffs are levied on the first sale price—the price paid to foreign vendors by American companies or their middlemen.

This method of calculation reduces the tax burden on American consumers but preserves the tariff’s punitive effect on foreign producers. For example, suppose President Trump was to impose a 10 percent tariff on Chinese washing machines.

Imagine you take a trip to Home Depot. You notice that the average imported washing machine costs $500.00. That is the product’s retail price. Will a 10 percent tariff raise the cost of this washing machine to $550.00? No. Tariffs are not charged on the retail price. Let us journey back a step further.

American retailers often do not buy products directly from Chinese manufacturers. This is because China imposes an intentionally convoluted regulatory framework on foreign businesses, which is designed to benefit Chinese bigwigs. In any case, Americans often buy products through middlemen located in Hong Kong, Singapore, or Taiwan. These middlemen buy cheap Chinese goods—in this case, washing machines—and sell them at a profit. Typically, this is a small fraction of the retail price. In our example, we will assume they sell for $150.00.

Of course, the middlemen do not work for free; they buy washing machines from Chinese factories for $70.00. This would be the first sale price upon which tariffs are calculated. In our example, a hypothetical 10 percent tariff on Chinese washing machines that retail for $500.00 would work out to just $7.00—a fraction of the $50.00 the media would have you believe.

Of course, we do not import whole washing machines from China, but we do import many of the parts. The logic applies not just to the finished product but also to the component pieces. For added clarity, in this example, the actual prices were based on real-world prices for toasters, although the actual margins will be product-specific.

Finally—and I cannot emphasize this point enough—you can avoid paying tariffs entirely by buying American. As such, there is no reason to oppose tariffs unless you want to buy “cheap” Chinese junk. Why would anyone want to do that?

China is our greatest economic rival. Can you imagine American journalists griping that they couldn’t buy the latest gizmo from the U.S.S.R. at the height of the Cold War? Certainly not. So why the hysteria over tariffs today?

President Trump’s tariffs will level the economic playing field and will help reshore American industry. Tariffs give us options. The rest is up to us to buy American.

The Trump administration has rescinded a Biden-era order that required it to report potential violations of international law involving US-supplied weapons by allies, including Israel, two US officials and a source familiar with the decision said on Monday.

The Washington Post first reported the decision, citing current and former officials, to scrap National Security Memorandum-20, which was signed by former President Joe Biden in February 2024 amid criticism over Israel's use of American bombs in its war in Gaza.

The memorandum required the US government to produce reports for Congress on the use of US arms by other countries. In May 2024, in a report required by the memorandum, Biden's administration said Israel may have breached international humanitarian law but that US officials were unable to identify specific instances of breaches that harmed civilians due to the chaos of war.

The Trump administration would have been required in the coming months to report to Congress its own assessment of Israel's conduct.

The Washington Post cited an order issued by White House national security adviser Michael Waltz on February 21 repealing NSM-20. Reuters was not able to independently confirm the existence of the order, but two US officials and a source familiar with the move said they had been told the directive was revoked.

The State Department referred questions to the White House, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Backlash over the decision

US Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, a key proponent of congressional oversight of US arms sales, said the decision to revoke the memo was "shameful."

"It’s a disservice to our national security, to global human rights, and to our standing around the world," Van Hollen said in a statement.

"This move also undermines American taxpayers’ right to ensure the use of their dollars aligns with our laws and our national interest. It’s another clear example of Trump’s blatant indifference to American values. This is not America first – it’s America in retreat.”

NSM-20 applied to all countries involved in armed conflict that receive US weapons, but sparked dissent among US officials over whether Israel's assurances that it was using US- supplied weapons in accordance with international humanitarian law were credible or reliable.

After returning to office on January 20, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that called for a review of all national security memoranda issued under Biden.

Olmert’s 2008 Palestinian state map revealed for first time - Joshua Marks

Rejected by Abbas, it would have ceded more than 94% of Judea and Samaria.

A BBC documentary reveals for the first time the map for a two-state solution that former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert said he presented to PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas in 2008.

The Palestinian leader rejected the peace proposal, which would have ceded more than 94% of Judea and Samaria for a Palestinian state, with Israel annexing 4.9% of the area to retain the areas of major Israeli communities. In exchange, Israel would cede equivalent territory adjacent to Judea and Samaria and Gaza. The two parts of the Palestinian state would be connected via a tunnel or highway.

“This is the first time that I expose this map to the media,” Olmert said in the series by documentary filmmaker Norma Percy, titled “Israel and the Palestinians: The Road to 7th October.” It is available in the U.K. via BBC iPlayer.

A key element addressed Jerusalem’s complex status. Olmert proposed that both Israel and the Palestinians claim parts of the city as their capitals, while the “holy basin,” including the Old City, would be managed by a committee of trustees from Israel, “Palestine,” Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the U.S.

The plan required evacuating tens of thousands of Israelis from scattered communities across Judea and Samaria, a move that risked national upheaval similar to the 2005 Gaza disengagement but on a much larger scale.

“In the next 50 years, you will not find one Israeli leader that will propose to you what I propose to you now,” Olmert said he told Abbas during their Jerusalem meeting on Sept. 16, 2008. “Sign it! Sign it and let’s change history!”

Despite Abbas calling the proposal “very, very, very serious,” he declined to sign without consulting his experts. Olmert refused to leave a copy of the map unless Abbas signed immediately. A follow-up meeting was planned but never occurred. Abbas’s team viewed Olmert as politically weakened due to an ongoing corruption scandal and his pending resignation, diminishing the proposal’s credibility.

The situation further deteriorated with the launch of the Israel Defense Forces’ “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza later that year, following months of rocket fire from the Hamas-controlled territory.

Olmert later reflected that Abbas should have signed the deal, believing it would have shifted accountability onto Israel if the agreement failed.

Hamas's October 7 Massacre Is Part of Its Jihad to Destroy Israel - Khaled Abu Toameh

by Khaled Abu Toameh

Hamas, in a document published shortly after the October 7 attack, openly admits that it is opposed to the presence of Jews in Israel. The document frankly admits that the conflict did not start as a result of the Holocaust, or when Israel declared independence in 1948, or on October 7, 2023, but 105 years ago, "including 30 years of British colonialism and 75 years of Zionist occupation."

  • Some people in Israel are demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu step down and agree to Hamas's demand to end the war in the Gaza Strip.... These Israelis fail to understand that the October 7 massacre is just another phase of the Islamists' Jihad (holy war) against Israel.

  • Since its violent, brutal takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007, Hamas has done nothing to help the local residents. Instead of building hospitals, schools and economic projects, Hamas, with the help of Iran and Qatar, has devoted huge resources to manufacturing weapons, such as rockets and missiles, and building a massive network of tunnels throughout the Gaza Strip.

  • Hamas, in a document published shortly after the October 7 attack, openly admits that it is opposed to the presence of Jews in Israel. The document frankly admits that the conflict did not start as a result of the Holocaust, or when Israel declared independence in 1948, or on October 7, 2023, but 105 years ago, "including 30 years of British colonialism and 75 years of Zionist occupation." The document goes on to explain that Hamas "is a Palestinian Islamic national liberation and resistance movement. Its goal is to liberate Palestine and confront the Zionist project."

  • Hamas's 1988 charter emphasizes the importance of Jihad as the main means for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to achieve its goals...

  • Significantly, the charter quotes Hassan al-Banna, who founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in 1928, as saying: "Israel will arise and continue to exist until Islam abolishes it, as it abolished what went before." Hamas is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

  • US President Donald J. Trump would do well to designate the Muslim Brotherhood, the font of all the Islamic jihadist organizations, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Such an act would make it difficult for those countries that promote and finance jihadi terrorists to keep on doing so.

  • What happened on October 7 should be seen in the context of Qatar's, Iran's and Hamas's continuing Jihad. The massacre on October 7 was just another phase in the Islamist groups' efforts to eliminate Israel. After the October 7, massacres, the Qatari government media consistently praised the massacres, and weeks ago vowed more of them.

  • Anyone who believes that Hamas would abandon Jihad as a result of a ceasefire agreement is engaging in extreme self-deception. Hamas has not yet accomplished its mission of destroying Israel. Hamas's main goal, especially now, is to remain in power after the war.... Any deal that keeps Hamas in power would pave the way for the Islamist murderers, rapists and baby-killers to carry out still more massacres against Israelis.

  • Regrettably, there is no alternative to eradicating Hamas.

The October 7, 2023 Hamas invasion of Israel was part of Hamas's Jihad to destroy Israel and replace it with an Islamist state. The Jihad does not aim to free prisoners or remove settlements and checkpoints, but to murder Jews and obliterate Israel. Iran and Hamas do not care if tens of thousands of Palestinians lose their lives, so long as it is permitted to pursue their Jihad against Israel. Any deal that keeps Hamas in power would pave the way for the Islamist murderers, rapists and baby-killers to carry out still more massacres against Israelis. Some people in Israel are demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu step down and agree to Hamas's demand to end the war in the Gaza Strip, as if Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel was just another round of fighting with the Iran-backed Palestinian terrorist group.

These Israelis fail to understand that the October 7 massacre is just another phase of the Islamists' Jihad (holy war) against Israel.

Hamas did not attack Israel on October 7, 2023, just because it wanted to release Palestinian convicts from Israeli prisons or improve the living conditions of the Palestinians under its rule in the Gaza Strip. The attack, resulting in the murder of 1,200 Israelis and the wounding of thousands more, as well as the abduction of more than 250 to the Gaza Strip, came as part of Hamas's Jihad to destroy Israel and replace it with an Islamist state.

For Hamas and other Islamist organizations, the conflict with Israel is not about prisoners, settlements or checkpoints. It is a conflict about Israel's very existence in the Middle East. The Jihad does not aim to free prisoners or remove settlements and checkpoints, but to murder Jews and obliterate Israel.

Since its violent, brutal takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007, Hamas has done nothing to help the local residents. Instead of building hospitals, schools and economic projects, Hamas, with the help of Iran and Qatar, has devoted huge resources to manufacturing weapons, such as rockets and missiles, and building a massive network of tunnels throughout the Gaza Strip. The result was that the Gaza Strip quickly became one of the largest bases for Jihad and terrorism in the Middle East.

After the October 7 massacre, Hamas repeatedly affirmed its commitment to Jihad against Israel. On February 21, 2025, Hamas said in a statement that its "determination and resolve to continue the path of Jihad until liberation and victory has increased." For Hamas, "liberation" means the elimination of Israel through Jihad and "armed resistance" (terrorism).

Hamas, in a document published shortly after the October 7 attack, openly admits that it is opposed to the presence of Jews in Israel.

Hamas's 1988 charter emphasizes the importance of Jihad as the main means for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to achieve its goals: An uncompromising Jihad must be waged against Israel and any agreement recognizing its to right to exist must be totally opposed. Jihad is the personal duty of every Muslim. Hamas, according to the charter, views the "problem of Palestine" as a religious-political Muslim issue, and the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation as a conflict between Islam and the "infidel" Jews. "Palestine" is presented as a sacred Islamic land, so it is strictly forbidden to give up even one inch of it because no one (including Arab-Muslim rulers) has the authority to do so.

Significantly, the charter quotes Hassan al-Banna, who founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in 1928, as saying: "Israel will arise and continue to exist until Islam abolishes it, as it abolished what went before." Hamas is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

US President Donald J. Trump would do well to designate the Muslim Brotherhood, the font of all the Islamic jihadist organizations, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Such an act would make it difficult for those countries that promote and finance jihadi terrorists to keep on doing so.

Article 2 of the Hamas charter states:

"The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the wings of Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine. Muslim Brotherhood Movement is a universal organization which constitutes the largest Islamic movement in modern times. It is characterized by its deep understanding, accurate comprehension and its complete embraced of al Islamic concepts of life, culture, culture, creed, politics, economics, education, society, justice and judgement, the spreading of Islam, education, art, inflation, science, of the occult and conversion to Islam."

Since its founding, Hamas has remained completely faithful to its charter. Hamas has never recognized Israel's right to exist; it has rejected all peace agreements between Arabs and Israel, and, most importantly, not only has it carried out thousands of terrorist attacks against Israel, its leaders have vowed to keep on carrying out terrorist attacks "until Israel is annihilated."

Last week it was reported that Hamas's patron, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Major-General Ebrahim Jabbari, stated that Iran's "Operation True Promise 3 will be carried out at the right time, with precision, and on a scale sufficient to destroy Israel and raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground."

The massacre on October 7 was just another phase in the Islamist groups' efforts to eliminate Israel. Iran and Hamas do not care if tens of thousands of Palestinians lose their lives, so long as it is permitted to pursue their Jihad against Israel.

What happened on October 7 should be seen in the context of Qatar's, Iran's and Hamas's continuing Jihad. The massacre on October 7 was just another phase in the Islamist groups' efforts to eliminate Israel. After the October 7, massacres, the Qatari government media consistently praised the massacres, and weeks ago vowed more of them.

Two weeks after the October 7 assault, Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal acknowledged that his group was intentionally sacrificing Palestinians to achieve as part of the Jihad against Israel: "We know very well the consequences of our operation on October 7," he said. "The Palestinian people are just like any other nation. No nation is liberated without sacrifices."

Anyone who believes that Hamas would abandon Jihad as a result of a ceasefire agreement is engaging in extreme self-deception. Hamas has not yet accomplished its mission of destroying Israel. Hamas's main goal, especially now, is to remain in power after the war.

The terrorist group in Gaza bears full responsibility for the death of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians. Any deal that keeps Hamas in power would pave the way for the Islamist murderers, rapists and baby-killers to carry out still more massacres against Israelis.

It is time to remind the world of what senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad said after October 7:

"The Al-Aqsa Flood [Hamas's name for the Oct. 7 invasion] is just the first time, and there will be a second, third, and fourth, because we have the determination, the remove, and the capabilities to fight.... Israel is a country that has no place on our land. We must remove that country."

Regrettably, there is no alternative to eradicating Hamas. In a civilized world, a terrorist group that is openly hell-bent on genocidal destruction has forfeited its right to exist.

IDF’s expanded presence on Syrian side of buffer zone appears long-term - Yaakov Lappin

by Yaakov Lappin

Israel is waiting for Syria to stabilize, Lt. Col. (res.) Marco Moreno, a former senior IDF intelligence officer, tells JNS.

Israel’s broadened military presence on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights buffer zone set up after the Yom Kippur War seems set to be long-term, following uncertainty over the possible approach by radical Sunni or Shi’ite elements to the Israeli border and the nature of the Syrian regime.

JNS has learned that a Feb. 18 report by Haaretz stating that Israel has built at least seven military outposts in the demilitarized zone, on the Syrian side, citing satellite imagery, is accurate.

The new outposts are considered vital strategic positions in the buffer zone separating Israel from Syria.

They span the entire demilitarized zone, from Mount Hermon in the north to Tel Kudna in the south, near the border area between Israel, Jordan and Syria, the report stated.

Lt. Col. (res.) Marco Moreno is a former senior officer in the Israel Defense Force’s Human Intelligence Unit 504 who was responsible for the Lebanon and Syria arenas, and the founder and commander from 2012 to 2016 of the IDF’s “Operation Good Neighbor,” which provided humanitarian aid to Syrians during the civil war.

Moreno told JNS on Monday, “In the Middle East, long-term could be between months and years. I think that the formula is that once the Israeli defense establishment feels that Syria is stabilized—first, that we are not faced with terror or violent acts, and second, that there are strategic points where we can assess with high certainty that will not exploited in order to harm us, to use it as a springboard to attack us—then the IDF will withdraw from these points and return them to other Syrian forces.”

He emphasized that the timeline for this remains uncertain.

“How long will that take? We don’t know. I know that the defense establishment is dealing with this, also through some form of dialogue with local elements, as the defense minister has said. We have to wait. I think the military is acting with discretion and is minimizing risk, and that is how it should be.”

Discussing the strategic significance of the new outposts, Moreno added, “The posts are truly important. They dominate firing positions and observation positions that overlook our territory, and some are also near the border area between Lebanon and Syria—this is related to the transfer of arms to Lebanon and Hezbollah. Therefore, it is correct that the IDF holds these points until it feels that the ground is stable enough to transfer them onward.”

Thwart any threat

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the IDF’s extended presence in the buffer zone, saying that in “Syria, IDF forces will remain at Hermon Peak and in the buffer zone indefinitely to protect our communities and thwart any threat.”

He added, “We will not allow forces of the HTS [Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the rebel organization that toppled the Assad regime] organization or the new Syrian army to enter the area south of Damascus. We demand the complete demilitarization of southern Syria—in the Quneitra, Daraa, and As-Suwayda provinces—of the new regime’s forces. Additionally, we will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria.”

Responding to Netanyahu’s statement, Moreno said, “There is no doubt that this is a dramatic statement by the prime minister. It entails a very prolonged presence there. Because, practically speaking, how do you demilitarize southern Syria? And how do you ultimately ensure that it has actually happened?

“The Syrians, from their side, will say, ‘Listen, we are a sovereign state, we want to deploy forces here.’ It must be remembered that the Syrian army, during the Assad regime, generally adhered to the ceasefire agreement between us and them from 1974 regarding military forces—but it allowed terrorist elements to establish themselves in southern Syria.”

Moreno assessed that Israel is no so much concerned by regular Syrian army units as it is about various terrorist elements—”whether Hezbollah, or, for example, Al-Qaeda—groups that would operate near the border.”

According to Moreno, Israeli intelligence will play a crucial role in informing the political echelon of the situation on the ground, and whether and for how long Israel will need to stay on the Syrian side.

The former officer added that Netanyahu’s pledge to protect Syrian Druze communities “outed a policy that has existed for many years. There has always been a policy [by Israel] of extending support to Druze in Syria, even though some have operated against Israel, for example, in Khader village, where some cooperated with Hezbollah in the past. But due to the long-standing alliance with the Druze in Israel, Israel is committed to the safety of Druze communities in Syria.”

The IDF has also taken steps to enhance its operational response in the Golan Heights in recent months. On Dec. 3, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit announced the establishment of the Pereh (“Wild”) unit, which will operate under the 210th “Golan” Division, also known as the Bashan Formation. The new unit was created as a division-level force multiplier and consists of highly trained reservists described as reconnaissance and special unit members who are locals.

“Our eyes are fixed on the entire region—today, especially toward Syria,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday. “We will not allow a return to the reality of October 7—and so it will be.

“There is a new policy in southern Syria. The IDF will not allow hostile forces to establish themselves in the security zone of southern Syria—from here to the Suwayda-Damascus corridor—and will act against any threat,” the defense minister continued.

“We will strengthen ties with friendly populations in the area, fostering good neighborly relations, with an emphasis on the large Druze population,” Katz said. The IDF will remain at the summit of Mount Hermon and in the buffer zone indefinitely to ensure the security of the Golan Heights communities, the north, and all the residents of Israel.”
