When all expressions of Jew-hate are equal - but some are more equal than others.
Three troubling incidents occurred this week that highlight the Left’s ongoing and deliberate effort to ignore blatant anti-Semitism emanating from its quarters. Despite some pushback from the remnants of the center-left – a group rapidly shrinking in size and influence – it’s a growing problem that only appears to be getting worse.
The first involves an attempted car ramming attack against a group of Jews near a Los Angeles synagogue. The attack was captured on video. In it, the attacker, identified as Mohamed Mohamed Abdi, can be seen making a U-turn in an effort to ram the group. The 32-year-old Abdi was born in Mogadishu Somalia but managed to obtain U.S. citizenship. Witnesses at the scene said that Abdi yelled anti-Semitic epithets at the group before attempting to murder them with his car.
Fortunately, Abdi was caught and no one was injured. In addition to state charges, Abdi may also be facing more serious federal charges involving civil rights violations. Aside from a few local media outlets, the incident unsurprisingly garnered little establishment media attention. One has to wonder how the media would have treated the incident had Abdi been a Trump supporter, wearing a bright red Make America Great Again hat.
The second incident involves congresswoman-elect, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In a tweet, the 29-year-old Democratic Socialist absurdly compared the Central-American migrant caravan to Jews fleeing the Nazi orchestrated Holocaust. Such asinine comparisons represent a gross distortion of reality and are tantamount to Holocaust denial. No one ever branded a migrant with a number nor poisoned them with deadly Zyclon-B poison gas. No one ever subjected migrants to sadistic medical experiments nor forcibly worked them until exhaustion and death.
Migrants at the border have been recorded proudly displaying the flags of their respective countries of origin, Honduran, Mexican or otherwise. One would be hard-pressed to find a Jew fleeing Germany, waiving the Swastika. Moreover, Jews fleeing Germany didn’t throw rocks at law enforcement and didn’t try to forcibly breach border walls and destroy infrastructure. Finally, migrants fleeing their host countries are fleeing for a plethora of reasons. Some may very well feel that their lives are in danger while others are fleeing for economic reasons. Others may have criminal motivations, and some with no visible means of support wish to enter the US simply for welfare checks and other taxpayer-funded entitlements. Jews fleeing Europe did so for one reason and one reason only; their very lives were in peril.
The third incident sheds light on CNN’s Marc Lamont Hill. In a speech at the U.N., during a special meeting of the “Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People,” Lamont-Hill let loose with a torrent of anti-Israel invective and finished his screed by invoking a common Hamas refrain, “free Palestine from the River to the Sea.” Anti-Semites of various stripes and persuasions routinely spew this vile exhortation. It is a euphemistic reference to the ethnic cleansing of Israel’s indigenous Jewish inhabitants from the Jordan River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. It is an astonishing reflection on CNN that a commentator under its employ can feel emboldened enough to call for the annihilation of the Jewish State without fear of repercussion from his employer. Fortunately in this case, the network took action and canned him. “Marc Lamont Hill is no longer under contract with CNN,” a spokesman for the network told Fox News.
The so-called mainstream media, led by the likes of CNN, MSNBC and the New York Times is largely composed of Democratic Party hacks and so-called #Resistance activists masquerading as journalists. They habitually engage in selective recognition of anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism emanating from leftist quarters is routinely given only scant coverage at best, and is often ignored entirely. Thus, when #Resistance star Linda Sarsour openly aligns with the likes of Nation of Islam chieftain Louis Farrakhan, her reputation is barely tarnished. When congresswoman-elect Ilhan Omar claims that Jews maintain a hypnotic effect on the world and that Israel is “evil,” it barely garners a yawn. When Jews are nearly mowed down by a Somali chanting anti-Semitic slogans, it becomes a localized matter with no national ramifications.
This malevolent form of journalism is perhaps more dangerous than anti-Semitism itself for it creates a hierarchal structure for anti-Semitism where some expressions of Jew-hate are acceptable while others are not. If the act of anti-Semitism runs counter to the narrative the #Resistance media wishes to present, it is ignored. It is time for the leftist establishment media to stop playing this silly charade and call out all forms of anti-Semitism. Failure to do so will only result in further eroding of the public’s trust in the media, which already stands at an all-time low.
