Why the president need not apologize for calling out OAC and her three comrades.
President Trump renewed his attack on Monday against the four far-left congresswomen
he had picked a fight with over the weekend. “When will the Radical
Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and
even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have
used, and the terrible things they have said,” the president tweeted.
“If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred
spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular &
unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it
plays out.” He added,
“they are Anti-Semitic, they are Anti-America, we don’t need to know
anything about them personally, talk about their policies. I think they
are American citizens who are duly elected that are running on an agenda
that is disgusting, that the American people will reject.” The four
congresswomen the president was referring to are Democratic Reps. Ayanna
Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
(N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.).
President Trump had tweeted over the weekend that all four should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” In fact, only Somalian-born Ilhan Omar came from a country outside the United States, which rescued her from the desperate conditions and hopelessness she was facing as a child living in a Kenyan refugee camp. While President Trump overreached in his original tweet by treating the four congresswomen as all coming from outside the country, as to Omar specifically he does have a valid point.
Omar has recently said she misses the freedom to be herself that she claims to have experienced in the Kenyan refugee camp, as opposed to the constraints on expressing her identity she feels in the United States. It’s fair to ask why Omar has not gone back to her home country of Somalia to try and fix the grave problems of corruption and brutality there, or even to speak out against the horrific conditions in Somalia as vociferously as she has attacked the United States. Rather than show gratitude for the opportunities afforded her since she arrived in the United States, Omar has turned her anger against her adopted home, which she has accused of racism. For Omar to say that “I probably love this country more than anyone that is naturally born” is a cruel joke.
In any case, it is more constructive for the president to focus, as he is now doing, on the fundamentally anti-American agendas of the four radical congresswomen rather than on where they came from. Their stance on immigration is a prime example.
The founding fathers were not against immigration per se. Neither is President Trump. However, the founding fathers, like President Trump, believe that immigrants who are admitted to this country should serve the interests of American citizens, not the other way around. According to an account of the debates of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, James Madison, the ‘Father of the Constitution,’ was reported to have “wished to invite foreigners of merit & republican principles among us.”
Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1802 that “there is a wide difference between closing the door altogether and throwing it entirely open.” He was worried that “foreigners will generally be apt to bring with them attachments to the persons they have left behind; to the country of their nativity, and to its particular customs and manners. They will also entertain opinions on government congenial with those under which they have lived, or if they should be led hither from a preference to ours, how extremely unlikely is it that they will bring with them that temperate love of liberty, so essential to real republicanism?”
The United States is indeed a land of immigrants. But it was not so long ago when there was a broad consensus in both major parties that immigrants who seek to enter the U.S. must do so through legal channels. It was widely believed across party lines that citizenship or permanent residence is a privilege to be considered only for those who play by the rules, not an automatic human right. Not so anymore. The Democrat Party is becoming the party of open borders, led by the four radical congresswomen who do not want any enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws, let alone the closing of any loopholes. The four radicals condemned by President Trump, who even voted no on a bipartisan humanitarian border relief bill as a protest against the president’s enforcement and detention policies, could not care less about protecting the security of the American people. For them, it’s all about protecting the people trying to get into the U.S. illegally or with bogus asylum claims.
Rep. Omar, for instance, ran on a platform
that not only called for the creation of “a fair and accessible pathway
to legal status and citizenship for all undocumented people living in
the U.S.” She urged extending the welcome mat to all immigrants, no
matter if they entered the country illegally, and providing them “with
paths to citizenship.”
The idea that U.S. borders should be regulated under the rule of law is foreign to Omar. When anyone challenges her beliefs, she calls them racists and demands that their First Amendment rights be suppressed as hate speech.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who said that much of her “strength comes from being Palestinian,” declared that one of her priorities as a congresswoman is to “provide a clear pathway to citizenship for all undocumented Americans” and to “dismantle our deportation machine and detention centers.” This is the same woman who twisted history when she claimed that her Palestinian "ancestors" tried "to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time." In truth, her ancestors, like the Palestinian terrorists today, sought to create a graveyard for Jews before, during and after World War II, not a “safe haven.”
In her remarks during last Saturday’s Netroots conference, Rep. Pressley accused “black and brown people” who work for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of being “a cog in this machine of oppression of people who look just like them.” In Pressley’s way of thinking, a federal law enforcement agent who happens to be black or brown is committing treason against his or her own ethnicity or race by enforcing American law against transgressors of any ethnicity or race, including their own. This is pure tribalism, the antithesis of what it means to be Americans united by the core founding principle that government’s purpose is to secure the lives, liberties and property of a free sovereign people under the rule of law.
Finally, there is the demagogue in chief Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Following her visit to migrant detention facilities run by Customs and Border Protection in Texas, she claimed that the United States is “headed toward fascism.” She had previously compared the detention centers to “concentration camps.” As Frank Miele wrote in a commentary published by Real Clear Politics, raising the specter of fascism and using Border Patrol as the target of choice are “part of a long-range plan to delegitimize the government of the United States as a whole.”
President Trump need not apologize for calling out Ocasio-Cortez and her three comrades. Time and again they have demonstrated their hatred for our country.
