Under Pressure, Chief of Naval Operations 'Unwokes' Reading List - Daniel Greenfield

by Daniel Greenfield

[T]wo things are going on here.

Front Page Magazine extensively covered the Navy's descent into critical race theory and wokeness under Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael Gilday.

Our latest pamphlet, How Obama and Biden Destroyed the Greatest Military the World Has Ever Seen, calls for a reckoning with Gilday.

One piece of good news is that Gilday seems to be getting a little cautious, from Instapundit's Ed Driscoll.

The US Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Mike Gilday released an update to the CNO Professional Reading Program. Gone from the list are socially progressive books that ignited conservative anger last year. Books like Ibram X. Kendi bestseller How to Be an Antiracist and Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

The CNO-Professional Reading Program consists of 12 books and is a mix of writing genres including fiction, non-fiction, military, strategy, management, and technology, among others.

What's going on here?

Remember these guys are kiss-ass careerists. They're not authentically woke and they don't believe this stuff, but they jump on whatever trend seems to be rolling in. If tomorrow it looks like the KKK is popular, they'll come to work wearing bedsheets.

Guys like Gilday are also immersed deep in the D.C. swamp and so they're surrounded by a cocktail party circuit that is imitatively woke.

So two things are going on here.

1. Performative wokeness at the institutional level has started to look shaky. The brass jumped on the trend, but now they're waiting for the next big thing. That doesn't mean that the Navy and other institutions aren't still being corrupted. It just means that the guys out front are waiting for the next scam to come along, but meanwhile they're letting leftists run riot in their institutions. So the problem isn't gone, just the most overt symptoms of it at the top.

2. Gilday and other brass expected the Democrats to take power in 2020 and they were right. They bet correctly and got on the right side of the Left. Now they understand that the shoe is likely to be on the other foot. So they're backing away from overt offensiveness and are preparing to court the incoming GOP majority.

Again, remember, this doesn't mean the institutions have been fixed. Only that the ass-kissers at the top will be singing a different tune. A slightly different one.
