The U.S. agency, which the Trump administration closed last year, has found that 14 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) have been linked to Hamas so far, but USAID said it is investigating more than 100 employees.

The United States' Agency for International Development's Inspector General's office said Tuesday that it is expanding its investigation into whether employees at a United Nations' relief agency were connected to Hamas' Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel in 2023.

The U.S. agency, which the Trump administration closed down last year, has found that 14 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) employees have been linked to Hamas so far, but USAID said it is investigating more than 100 employees.

“USAID is investigating over 100 UNRWA officials for both ties to Hamas and participation in the October 7th terrorist attacks,” a US diplomat familiar with USAID IG’s investigation told the New York Post. “The list is expanding.”

USAID Deputy Inspector General Adam Kaplan is expected to share the office’s findings, along with findings from nearly 150 other active investigations, with members of the House Foreign Affairs Oversight and Intelligence Subcommittee on Tuesday.

“I am proud to say that even in a year of vast change, USAID OIG has continued to achieve unprecedented results,” Kaplan said in a written statement. “As the only OIG with foreign service personnel, our offices in Ukraine, Israel, El Salvador, South Africa, and Thailand allow for timely and aggressive oversight close to American-funded projects on the ground.”

Kaplan is expected to argue that his office is still necessary despite the closure of the overarching agency, because he has uncovered a vast amount of fraud that was committed by USAID and there are multiple investigations still ongoing.
