New Islamic State Document Shows U.S. Still In the Crosshairs - John Rossomando

by John Rossomando/IPT News

"Be patient, don't rush anything, put your trust in Allah"

A 64-page terrorist operations manual recently released by an Islamic State supporter on Twitter underscores concerns that the U.S. homeland remains firmly in the group's crosshairs. FBI Director James Comey told U.S. intelligence officials last month that the Bureau has approximately 900 ongoing Islamic State-related inquiries, most of which involve homegrown suspects.
The manual, "Safety and Security guidelines for Lone Wolf Mujahideen," provides detailed instructions on successfully carrying out terror attacks.

"I think the manual format gives them sort of a how-to process and therefore it's another indication of the danger we face in dealing with these self-motivated jihadists," said former FBI Associate Deputy Director Oliver "Buck" Revell. "I think it shows a great deal of critical analysis at the heart of the movement and that they are certainly knowledgeable, and they are not ignorant of our methodologies and even our technical capabilities, and we would be wise not to underestimate their capabilities."

A former high ranking EU intelligence source tells the Investigative Project on Terrorism three former members of Saddam Hussein's intelligence service who currently are in Raqqa, Syria wrote the English-language manual derived from earlier Arabic lectures.

Manual Tells Jihadists to Conceal Their True Identities

It notably instructs lone jihadists and members of terrorist cells to conceal their Muslim identities in the West.
"You should make sure to not look particularly attached to religion. A man who works on a secret operation should meddle in the general population. If you can avoid having a beard, wearing qamis (Islamic clothes), using miswak (a sort of toothbrush recommended in the hadiths), and have a booklet of dhikr (Islamic devotional booklet) with you, it's better. Also, you shouldn't be going to often to places like mosques, Islamic institutes or Islamic libraries. You should also wear western-style cloths to appear neutral and not draw attention to yourself."
The manual also directs jihadists to have plausible cover stories such as posing as engineers, doctors or tourists and instructs them not to rush their attacks.

"The advantage of the lone wolf here is that he is already established in the West, his entire life is a cover story – and a very strong one at that. So use that to your advantage. Be patient, don't rush anything, put your trust in Allah," it says.

Mubin Shaikh, a former jihadist who became a confidential informant and infiltrated Canada's Toronto 18 jihad cell, and advises Western counterterrorism leaders, told the Investigative Project on Terrorism these are classical tactics of covert operations.

"They want to give the impression that they are everywhere and that anyone could be a spy," Shaikh said.

The manual repeatedly cites the prophet Muhammad or his companions for religious justification for its recommendations.

Jihad Manual Shows Possible al-Qaida Pedigree

The guide, an abridgement of earlier Arabic instructions to jihadi cells translated into English, instructs jihadists how to conceal their plots from Western intelligence and security services. It repeats instructions found in other jihadi manuals published by al-Qaida or by the Islamic State in recent years, including "How to Survive in The West" and "Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants," the latter of which British police recovered from an al-Qaida member's home in Manchester in May 2000. Al-Qaida member Ali Mohamed, who infiltrated the U.S. Army and CIA in the 1980s, wrote the guide found in Manchester using information he gathered from U.S. government sources.
Shaikh describes the recent Islamic State guide as a new edition of Mohamed's guide.

"Surprise is half of victory, and to surprise the enemy in both the time and location where you will hit maximizes your chance of success," the manual says.

Instructions for Operational Security

It notes that the 9/11 attacks highlighted this principle because Americans became complacent that terrorists would not hit the U.S. homeland. Hence, they focused on fortifying their embassies abroad, hiring guards, and increasing security and defending their naval vessels across the Muslim world.

"The US never thought we would hit them at home," it says.

It includes case studies of successful operations such as the 9/11 attacks and failures from the jihadist perspective such as the capture of Abu Zubayda in Pakistan. It makes recommendations based on plots foiled by the FBI or other agencies.

It instructs jihadists to avoid drawing attention to themselves and advises that each jihadist cell "be entirely independent of each other." This way no one can connect jihadist operations with each other.

It also suggests that cell leaders inform their subordinates about planned terror operations on a need-to-know basis to lessen chances of compromising plots if a cell member gets captured.

The manual repeats instructions found in other jihadist literature instructing jihadists to encrypt their online communications while on the Internet to escape detection. While providing instructions for conventional surveillance operations, the manual suggests that jihadists also use Google Earth as a surveillance tool before an attack because other conventional methods risk their capture.

"That's tradecraft we employ with our own – both our intelligence services and military and investigative services," Revell said. "They employ [this] sort of tradecraft to identify, penetrate and neutralize operations. The fact that they do learn even from failures I think is an even more menacing circumstance than we've had in the past.

"These are not ignorant peasants off the field; these are people who have both education and technical skills that are commensurate with our capabilities."

Jihadists operating in the West are warned to avoid purchasing weapons from dealers, lest they turn out to be informants for the FBI or other agencies engaging in sting operations. The manual relates a case in which jihadists operating in the U.S. bought weapons from someone they did not know was an undercover FBI agent to make a point.

"So what was the result? When they wanted to launch the attack they got arrested," the manual says.

It specifically names Shaikh as the type of person to look out for, noting that he convinced the Toronto 18 that he was one of them. At the same time, he actively worked with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) to provide it with intelligence.

Shaikh suspects the author named him due to his efforts online and elsewhere to counter the Islamic State narrative and deter Muslims from joining.

"They could have named others as well such as Morten Storm [the Danish-born spy who infiltrated al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula for the CIA]..., but they don't reference it," Shaikh said. "I'm thinking that [they named me] because they know of me and that I interface with their guys online."

The guide advises jihadists to purchase ingredients for explosives in small quantities from different stores. With other weapons, jihadists are advised to test the weapons before carrying out their operation because the FBI gives would-be jihadists inert weapons, and to test the dealer to ensure he or she is not a spy.

"With the presence today of social media, Google and so on, collecting intel on a target has become significantly easier than 10 years ago. There is today a part you can do online from your home, and some other specific info you can complete with an inspection on the target's location site," the manual states.

All of this shows that the Islamic State knows a lot about us and our capabilities, and we would be foolish not to take them seriously because they have the ability to collect and analyze intelligence and hit their targets, Revell said.

Iran halts its dismantling of centrifuges - Rick Moran

by Rick Moran

Yesterday, the government announced it had stopped decommissioning the centrifuges.

The deal the US signed with Iran regarding its nuclear program clearly specifies that Iran must dismantle all but a few thousand of its nearly 20,000 centrifuges. Iran began the dismantling process last week.

But so-called "hardliners" in the Iranian government sent a letter to President Rouhani accusing him of moving too quickly to implement the deal. Yesterday, the government announced it had stopped decommissioning the centrifuges.

Reuters:
Iran has stopped dismantling centrifuges in two uranium enrichment plants, state media reported on Tuesday, days after conservative lawmakers complained to President Hassan Rouhani that the process was too rushed.
Last week, Iran announced it had begun shutting down inactive centrifuges at the Natanz and Fordow plants under the terms of a deal struck with world powers in July that limits its nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.
Iran's hardliners continue to resist and undermine the nuclear deal, which was forged by moderates they oppose and which they see as a capitulation to the West.
"The (dismantling) process stopped with a warning," Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the National Security Council, was quoted as saying by the ISNA student news agency.
Only decommissioned centrifuges were being dismantled to begin with, of which there were about 10,000 at Natanz and Fordow, the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran has said.
Shamkhani did not specify what he meant by "warning", but the head of parliament's nuclear deal commission, Alireza Zakani, told Mehr news agency that the dismantling had stopped in Fordow because of the lawmakers' letter to Rouhani.
Zakani, who was not one of the signatories of the letter, did not mention activities at Natanz.
A group of 20 hardline parliamentarians wrote to the president last week complaining that the deactivation of centrifuges contradicted the directives of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Khamenei has said that the deal should only be implemented once allegations of past military dimensions (PMD) of Iran's nuclear program had been settled.
The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to announce its conclusions on PMD by Dec. 15.
Indeed, there's very little difference between the so-called "hardliners" and those the western press has designated as "moderates." And Rouhani may try to use the hardliners as an excuse to not fully implement the deal. Supreme Leader Khamenei has already redefined key elements of the deal to favor Iran's nuclear program, which Rouhani will probably cite when he violates the terms of the agreement as we go along.

Of course, the president won't see it that way. The chances of Obama calling out Iran for not following through to implement the deal are slim and none. He will have his "legacy" accomplishment even if means Iran builds a bomb.

And it's not just the president. The rest of the world will also play pretend and refuse to punish Iran if, as expected, they define certain elements of the deal differently than we do. This weakness by the west in the face of such fanaticism continues. It's an open question whether we will awake in time to save us.

Die Partei der deutschen Selbstmord (The party of German suicide) - J. Robert Smith

by J. Robert Smith

Expect naked assertions by the media that no opponent to Merkel’s lunacy is reasonable. The square-off will strictly pit urbane and humanity-embracing E.U. champs against knuckle-dragging neo-fascists.

Note how the media characterizes the protests in Germany. Protests, that is, mushrooming against Angela Merkel’s misbegotten intention to permit millions of Muslims to flood not only Deutschland but Western Europe. The Daily Mail carried a Reuters’ photo of an anti-Merkel protestor who looked straight out of central casting. The old Fox TV show, Sons of Anarchy, comes to mind. The Teuton is muscle-bound, heavily tattooed, and skin-headed. Oh, was it mentioned he’s giving a double-barreled flip-off to pro-Merkel counter-protestors? The Mail’s caption reads:
“A supporter of the right-wing Alternative for Germany [Alternativ für Deutschland (AfD)] party makes an obscene gesture as he demonstrates against the German government's policy for migrants in Berlin [Italics added.]
Hence, the Mail has its “picture that speaks a thousand words” summation of how it wants its readers to perceive those who’d dare take to the streets against Frau Merkel’s open borders generosity. The intent is for the eye to go to and linger on the menacing appearance of the skin-headed protestor, and then for the mind to register the image and the memory to catalogue it.  Be aghast -- and very afraid -- forever. If this biker miscreant and his fellows ascend to rule Germany, why, Mad Max will play out in your nachbarschaft every… single… day.

The Mail’s other photos of sober-looking Germans against Merkel are incidental. Never mind that the anti-Merkel protests have swollen into the many thousands. Never mind that most of das Volk are pedestrian Germans who fear – with good cause – that their nation is being overrun by Mohammedans. Mostly males from war-torn Syria but with contributions from the Balkans (no war-tearing there as of late, alas, to excuse the influx).

The Associated Press (via Business Insider), in an odd moment of reasonable judgment, featured a photo of anti-Merkel seniors (in the foreground) garbed REI-style. These old people are terribly nonthreatening. They, among thousands of other Germans, in fact, are reasonable objectors to the Merkel-facilitated Muslim invasion.

As the crisis mounts, and if protestors appear to be gaining significant traction, expect anything close to fair portrayals of the anti-Merkel opposition to evaporate. Expect naked assertions by the media that no opponent to Merkel’s lunacy is reasonable. The square-off will strictly pit urbane and humanity-embracing E.U. champs against knuckle-dragging neo-fascists.

The protests against Frau Merkel’s derangement are having an impact. As the Associated Press reported, Merkel’s governing coalition is taking “restricted asylum status” off the table for Syrians who’ve trekked to Germany (750,000 plus Mohammedans have entered Germany between January and October). Note the qualifier, “restricted,” lest any German thinks that Frau Merkel is zany enough to want unrestricted asylum (as if, at the end of the day, there’d be much difference).

But don’t be fooled. Anyone who’s long observed or knows skilled politicians – regardless nationality – know about “tactical retreats,” which are undertaken for purely political reasons. From the Associated Press account:
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Friday many Syrians should get "subsidiary protection," which comes with only a one-year renewable residence permit and wouldn't allow them to bring relatives to Germany for two years. Hours later, he shelved the idea, saying things will remain unchanged for now.
De Maiziere’s trial balloon was popped but his back-off from asylum wasn’t much of anything. It would have permitted Syrians to stay in Germany, granting them -- as stated -- the option of one-year renewable permits. They could bring relatives to Deutschland after a next-to-nothing 24 months. The Syrian migrants, most of them accustomed to hardships since birth, could do that standing on their heads (or on their knees, five times a day, facing Mecca).

What Frau Merkel and her cohorts are up to is buying time. Any resolution that allows Syrians to stay in Germany beyond -- let’s say -- 90 days (enough time to process those there now for export) gives Merkel’s government leeway to concoct ways to make Syrians permanent features of the German landscape.

Whether Merkel coerces or connives, she fully intends to make her imperious compassion stick. Love means never having to say that German culture and borders are inviolate. Check that. Per Merkel’s perverse ethos, it means no inviolability throughout Western Europe. Merkel wants the Casbah rocked from Edinburgh to Palermo and every place in between. And you can bet your last shekel that shareef likes it mightily.

Reversing Merkel’s intention to hasten Western Europe’s suicide requires sealing off borders, as the Hungarians have done, and then transiting the Syrians and other Mohammedans back to their countries of origin, bag lunches and toiletries provided.

“What?” retorts Merkel and her coalition of muddle-minded Christians and compassionate loathers of the West. “Ship Syrians back to hellish Syria, tout de suite? Why, you cold-hearted, jackbooted right-wing biker-hater of the downtrodden. That simply can’t be done.”

So what about a compassionate Muslim country’s elite opening its arms to the masses of Syrians fleeing strife and turmoil in their homeland? Why not throw in Balkan Muslims for good measure, just to raise the compassion quotient?

The Saudis have deep pockets and a lot of unused desert. It would give the Saudis’ Wahabbi clerics a wonderful indoctrination opportunity. Shouldn’t we have confidence that the Saudis would be up to so kindhearted an enterprise? “Muslims helping Muslims,” with Frau Merkel cheerleading and photo-op ministering to all those surly Syrian males in Saudi tent cities. Why isn’t so elegant a resolution on tables in Berlin, Brussels, and Riyadh?

A critical moment approaches in Germany’s and Western Europe’s existence (or one should say, in the existence of vaunted Western culture in Europe’s western lands). For all intents and purposes, Merkel leads die Partei der Deutschen Selbstmord (the Party of German Suicide) in her stubborn insistence (among other insistences) that a withering German population needs infusions of Muslims. Otherwise, in coming years, Germany, skewed toward the old, won’t have a sufficient younger cohort to labor to support all those oldsters (ah, we’ve found something that is inviolate: the welfare state).

Since a feature of Islam is dhimmitude -- that’s the subordination of infidels to the chosen -- it’s fanciful to believe that Muslims transplanted to Germany (along with their fellows residing there now) will gladly and voluntarily fork over large portions of their earnings to support blue-eyed, fair-skinned Lutherans and Catholics (if any remain) and atheists, old and enfeebled or not. But the West’s decadent elite are full of such fancies.

If German elites want to boost population, then campaign to curtail abortions among native German women. And make more babies. Moreover, cast a wide net throughout struggling lands for distressed children -- say, age three or younger -- to bring to Germany for adoption. Then raise these children in the German way, layering in traditional Christian sensibilities, this to fortify future Germans in a manner that vacuous secularism cannot.

But such policies would amount to heresy among Germany’s godless, death culture-embracing elite. Met, too, with bewildered stares by the nation’s mushy-minded, Kumbaya Christians, who believe that loving Mohammedans will take the edge off their historic religious chauvinism and their equally historic fierce determination to prevail and dominate.

The antidote to Merkel’s Partei der deutschen Selbstmord is a Partei der deutschen Leben (Party of German Life).  In fact, similar parties need to spring up throughout Western Europe. Suicide or life; that’s really the choice.

Is Hillary Clinton a friend of Israel? - Jeff Dunetz

by Jeff Dunetz

Except for the time she needed New York’s Jewish voting bloc, Hillary Clinton has never been pro-Israel.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, wrote an op-ed for the liberal Jewish Newspaper the Forward. In the piece she pledges her continued friendship with the State of Israel, and to Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. That pledge should raise the eyebrows of any fair-minded observer.

If one looks at Hillary Clinton’s public history one finds a lifetime of anti-Israel positions. But wait some might say, Hillary was a big supporter of Israel when she was in the U.S. Senate. Indeed, she was. With the possible exception of the time from her first campaign New York’s Senate seat in 2000 to her resignation from the Senate to become Secretary of State in January 2009– except for the time she needed New York’s Jewish voting bloc, Hillary Clinton has never been pro-Israel. And when she held the position of Secretary of State, she helped Barack Obama craft his anti-Israel positions.
Even before her marriage to Bill, Hillary Clinton was opposing Israel and promoting the forces of terrorism. In his book American Evita on page 49, Christopher Anderson writes.
At a time when elements of the American Left embraced the Palestinian cause and condemned Israel, Hillary was telling friends that she was “sympathetic” to the terrorist organization and admired its flamboyant leader, Yasser Arafat. When Arafat made his famous appearance before the UN General Assembly in November 1974 wearing his revolutionary uniform and his holster on his hip, Bill “was outraged like everybody else,” said a Yale Law School classmate. But not Hillary, who tried to convince Bill that Arafat was a “freedom fighter” trying to free his people from their Israeli “oppressors.”
On page 50 of the same book, the author relates an experience that Hillary and her future husband had during a trip to Arkansas in 1973:
It was during this trip to his home state that Bill took Hillary to meet a politically well-connected friend. When they drove up to the house, Bill and Hillary noticed that a menorah-the seven branched Hebrew candelabrum (not to be confused with the more common and subtler mezuzah)-has been affixed to the front door.
“My daddy was half Jewish,” explained Bill’s friend. “One day when he came to visit, my daddy placed the menorah on my door because he wanted me to be proud that we were part Jewish. And I wasn’t about to say no to my daddy.”
To his astonishment, as soon as Hillary saw the menorah, she refused to get out of the car. “Bill walked up to me and said that she was hot and tired, but later he explained the real reason.” According to the friend and another eyewitness, Bill said, “I’m sorry, but Hillary’s really tight with the people in the PLO in New York. They’re friends of hers, and she just doesn’t feel right about the menorah.”
Hillary’s attitude did not change when she became first lady. In May 1998 Ms. Clinton became the first person ever who attached to any presidential administration ever to call for a Palestinian State. Think about that for a moment, nobody in the Carter administration made that demand neither did anyone in the Reagan or Bush 41 presidency. It took Hillary Clinton to “break the ice.” She told a youth conference on Middle East peace in Switzerland, that she supports the eventual creation of an independent Palestinian state. Her spokesperson, Marsha Berry told reporters: “These remarks are her own personal view.”
In November 1999, while on a purported State visit to the Middle East, she publicly appeared with Yasser Arafat’s wife Suha. Mrs. Arafat made a slanderous allegation:
“Our [Palestinian] people have been submitted to the daily and intensive use of poisonous gas by the Israeli forces, which has led to an increase in cancer cases among women and children.” Suha also accused Israel of contaminating much of the water sources used by Palestinians with “chemical materials” and poisoning Palestinian women and children with toxic gases.”
Mrs. Clinton sat by silently listening to a real-time translation, and the terrorist’s wife hug and a kiss when she finished speaking.
Later, many hours after the event, and only after a media furor put her on the spot for what many view as a bit more than a mere political “boo boo Mrs. Clinton called on all sides to refrain from “inflammatory rhetoric and baseless accusations,” including Israel, whose leaders made no such accusations.
Glossing over this repugnant affair, Hillary Clinton has yet to specifically contradict and denounce the monstrous lies uttered by Yasser Arafat’s wife in her presence. Only years later did she make feeble attempt at an excuse, the translator screwed up.
Before her tenure in the State Department, Bill and Hillary Clinton made mega dollars from their extensive involvement with Dubai. Besides being a leader in the movement to boycott Israel, Dubai is the “Hong Kong” of the terrorist world. And a major commerce and shipping point for the “business-side” of terrorism. Bill and Hilary are major friends of Dubai, to the point where the Clinton Foundation have established Dubai Study departments in universities in the US and London. They worked hard at granting legitimacy to this Jew-hating, terrorist supporting nation.
While she was running for President in 2007, San Francisco Examiner columnist P.J. Corkery, wrote that Clinton made $10 million a year from Yucaipa a Dubai firm. Ron Berkle, the owner of Yucaipa companies was a major fund-raiser for Bill and Hillary. And all this was before the recent questions about the Clinton Foundation donations.
The Clintons also had a connection to what was then, the worlds biggest exporter of terrorism, Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Royal Family donated $10,000,000 to the Clinton Library.
According to a 1993 New York Times article, Prince Turki bin Feisal was a college classmate of Bill’s at Georgetown University and (at the time of the article’s writing) was the head of the Saudi Arabian intelligence service. While he was still governor of Arkansas, it looks like Bill Clinton cashed in on that relationship, “work[ing] hard to secure a multimillion-dollar Saudi donation to a Middle Eastern studies program at the University of Arkansas.” Due to the intervention of the Gulf War, the first installment of $3.5 million didn’t arrive until 1992, with another $20 million arriving after Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.
During her Senate years Ms. Clinton became a vocal supporter of Israel because she needed the Jewish vote. But one of her first actions after leaving the Senate to become Secretary of State was to ignore a previous deal with Israel and call for the end of the construction of new homes in existing settlement neighborhoods.
Clinton’s demand for a building freeze in existing settlement communities broke a US/Israel agreement made during the Bush administration. Ms. Clinton said there was never an agreement between Israel and the US about natural expansion of existing settlements. But Elliot Abrams who negotiated the agreement for the United States said Clinton’s contention is simply not true.
As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton first demanded the “settlement” freeze in 2009 and was quickly backed up by Obama. What she perceived as a minor concession (a “settlement” freeze including no new housing units in existing communities) was for Israel a grave sacrifice. For all intents and purposes Clinton was telling Israeli parents their married children could no longer live in their neighborhoods
This was a major error by the Clinton State Department and it was compounded by the inclusion of Jerusalem in the mix and the constant public berating of the Jewish State by Clinton and Obama that as we know, continued even after she left the administration.
Immediately the Palestinians seized upon the Hillary-created settlement issue. Seeing an opportunity to avoid talking, they used the administration’s demands, to make a “settlement” freeze a precondition to further talks even though there were negotiations and construction going on simultaneously before Hilary Clinton became Secretary of State.
In August 2009 Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a ten-month “settlement” freeze. It was approved by the cabinet and implemented on November 25, 2009 and was to run till September 25, 2010. Despite pressure from the United States, the Palestinians refused to join any talks the first 9+ months of the freeze; they did not come to the negotiation table till September 2010, three weeks before the freeze ended.
As the end of the construction halt approached, the US began to negotiate with the Israel to extend the freeze. Based on their experience with Clinton denying the deal negotiated by Elliot Abrams during the Bush Administration, Israel demanded that any proposal be presented in writing, as any oral deal with Clinton and the Obama administration was worth the paper on which is was printed on.
The written offer never came; the Secretary of State wasn’t negotiating in good faith. Instead Ms. Clinton was playing “Bait and Switch.” As Israel waited for a letter clarifying America’s guarantees in exchange for a proposed building ban for Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria, a diplomatic source finally came forward saying that no such letter is on its way. The United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton misled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The source, a senior diplomat with inside knowledge of Netanyahu’s recent meetings in Washington, said Clinton made commitments when talking to Netanyahu, but later slipped out of them by claiming that she had not been speaking on behalf of U.S. President Obama – who, she said in the end, did not give his approval.
In 2011 speaking at the at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the liberal Brookings Institute, Clinton tried to delegitimize Israel as a free nation by expressing concern for Israel’s social climate in the wake of limitations regarding female singing in the IDF and gender segregation on public transportation. Both were accommodations made to the Orthodox communities in Israel.
She referred to the decision of some IDF soldiers to leave an event where female soldiers were singing; she said it reminded her of the situation in Iran. It did? Wow! In Iran the women would have been lashed or executed. In Israel they sang, but the people who felt it was against their religious beliefs were allowed to walk out. Most senior officers in the IDF supported the women’s right to sing. It’s called personal freedom.
Clinton also spoke of her shock that some Jerusalem buses had assigned separate seating areas for women. “It’s reminiscent of Rosa Parks,” she said, taking the typical progressive position that faith should not matter outside a place of worship. Clinton’s statement was part of the continued attempt by the Obama administration/Clinton State Department to de-legitimize the Israeli democracy and destroy one of the reasons for American support of Israel, the fact it is the only democracy in the Middle East.
And then there was her book “Hard Choices” which included some anti-Israel passages:
When we left the city and visited Jericho, in the West Bank, I got my first glimpse of life under occupation for Palestinians, who were denied the dignity and self-determination that Americans take for granted” (pg 302).
She says nothing about terrorism, such as blowing up buses with school children, nothing about the fact that during he presidency of her husband Yassir Arafat turned down a deal that would have given him about 98% of what he wanted (at least that’s what Bill Clinton said).
“The sticking point would be Jerusalem. East Jerusalem had been captured along with the West bank in 1967, and Palestinians dreamed of one day establishing the capital of their future state there.” (pg 317).
Hillary’s statement is totally biased. Israel didn’t capture Jerusalem; Jordan did in 1948. Jews were the majority of the Jerusalem Population from 1844 through the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 when they were kicked out by Jordan.  In fact, Muslims were the third largest religion in the city until about 1890.  The Palestinian’s want East Jerusalem as their capital because they don’t want Israel to have it.
Even after the Bar Kochba revolt in 135 CE when the Romans punished the Jews for revolting by changing the name of their country from Judea to Palestinia (after the Philistines the ancient Jewish Enemy who no longer existed) and the name of the holy city from Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina (literally Capitoline Hill of the House of Aelius) ,  most of the world recognized the Holy Land and Jerusalem as Jewish. The truth of the matter is that even ancient Muslim writings recognized Jerusalem as a Jewish City.
“There has been nearly a decade of terror, arising from the second intifada, which started in September 2000. About a thousand Israelis were killed and eight thousand wounded in terrorist attacks from September 2000 to February 2005. Three times as many Palestinians were killed and thousands more were injured in the same period.” (pg 308).
Like many who are anti-Israel Hillary Clinton draws a false equivalency between the terrorist attacks on Israel and Israel’s attempts to defend herself.  To maintain her ridiculous logic, the US should be chastised because more al Qaeda terrorists died than Americans were killed on 9/11/01.
The second intifada was a horrible period of Palestinian terrorism against Israeli civilians, bus loads of children blown up, pizza places bombed, even a hotel where families were celebrating the Passover Seder in peace. There is no equivalence between the attacks and Israel’s attempts to defend herself.
“Because of higher birth rates among Palestinians and lower birth rates among Israelis, we were approaching the day when Palestinians would make up a majority of the combined population of Israel and the Palestinian territories, and most of those Palestinians would be relegated to second-class citizenship and unable to vote.” (pg 312)
The page 312 quote was reminiscent of  John Kerry’s apartheid remark (which he backed away from).  What Israel’s deputy defense minister Danny Danon said about Kerry’s remark applies here also.
To suggest that the Jewish people would ever establish an apartheid regime was particularly hurtful.
Equally hurtful was the implied double standard. Although the administration has from time to time chided the Palestinians for “unhelpful” steps, those comments have not come close to the pointed criticism that has been leveled at our government. This policy of sharing the blame for the collapse of the peace talks, which from the outset was deemed by most independent experts as a long-shot attempt at best, has created the illusion of parity between the two sides. The secretary’s comments make it seem that Israel’s decisions to issue housing tenders, or to exhaustively debate whether to release convicted murders who would have very likely received the death penalty in U.S. courts, were just as damaging to the peace process as the “unity” pact that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has now signed with Hamas, a virulently anti-Semitic terrorist organization.
And then there are the Clinton emails. While most of the media coverage of the emails from her close friend Sidney Blumenthal are about his recommendations about Libya. Blumenthal sent many emails about Israel.  Some of then consisted of forwarding articles from his anti-Semitic son, writer Max Blumenthal.  But others were recommendations of policy, generally one sided describing Israel as the oppressor. As reported by NRO:
Blumenthal sent dozens of e-mails advising Clinton on Israel in 2010. Before her March speech at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Blumenthal sent Clinton a breathless article from left-wing Israeli writer Uri Avnery accusing the Netanyahu government of “starting a rebellion” against the United States and defending interests that diverge from America’s. “I have to speak to AIPAC tomorrow,” Clinton responded. “How — and should I — use this [sic]?” Blumenthal promised to send another memo the next day.
In that memo, he instructed Clinton to “hold Bibi [Netanyahu]’s feet to the fire” on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. “Perhaps most controversial,” he continued, would be for Clinton to “remind [AIPAC] in as subtle but also direct a way as you can that it does not have a monopoly over American Jewish opinion. Bibi is stage managing US Jewish organizations (and neocons, and the religious right, and whomever else he can muster) against the administration. AIPAC itself has become an organ of the Israeli right, specifically Likud.”
Interestingly if you asked Likud, they would claim that AIPAC favors Israel’s leftist parties.
On May 17, Blumenthal forwarded Clinton an article on the Israeli government’s decision to deny professor and Palestinian activist Noam Chomsky access to the West Bank. “Barring him for his political opinions has created a needless PR disaster,” he wrote. “The US should not be a passive onlooker. . . . The US effort on his behalf to gain entry should be part of the story.” Clinton forwarded the memo to staff with instructions to “pls print 3 copies.”
Chomsky has been fierce in his opposition to Israel’s right to defend herself from terrorism (some even say he is an anti-Semite), and had been officially banned from the country since 2010
In an e-mail from May 31 entitled “Several observations on the Israeli raid,” Blumenthal blames Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu’s family inferiority complex for his decision to launch a raid on the so-called “Gaza Flotilla,” a group of ships seeking to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. “Bibi desperately seeks his father’s approbation and can never equal his dead brother,” Blumenthal wrote. He then hinted that the raid was deliberately orchestrated to kill the peace process and humiliate President Obama before his scheduled visit with the prime minister. Clinton forwarded the message to Jake Sullivan, her deputy chief of staff at the State Department. “FYI and I told you so,” she wrote
Now Hillary Clinton is running for President. And she is campaigning on the basis that she is a friend of Israel, just as she did in the Senate, just as Obama did twice. As Secretary of State she was the architect of the policy of the most anti-Israel president since the rebirth of Israel in 1948. It was a policy which reflected views she has held her entire life, with the exception of the nine-year period where she ran for and held the office of U.S. Senator from New York State. Let’s hope the Republican who gets the nod will not let the former Secretary of State get away with hiding her true past.

Israeli Prof Moshe Halbertal Faces the Mob - Cinnamon Stillwell

by Cinnamon Stillwell

Will mob rule win the day?

Moshe Halbertal
In a replay of an unacceptable scenario we've seen far too many times, Moshe Halbertal, a professor at NYU Law School who teaches Jewish thought and philosophy at Hebrew University, attempted to give a talk on asymmetrical warfare at the University of Minnesota last week, only to find himself repeatedly interrupted and shouted down by anti-Israel protesters endorsed by the thuggish Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). Three of the protesters were arrested and, predictably, organizers are now claiming that their free speech rights were impeded.

Writing for the Volokh Conspiracy at the Washington Post, University of Minnesota Law School professor and attendee Dale Carpenter concludes that:
[B]eyond punishing the disruption of a public lecture, a university cannot accept any moral legitimacy in such an act or equivocate in denouncing it. It is fundamentally illiberal and destructive to the core values of an educational institution. And ironically, those who espouse unpopular and minority causes would be most vulnerable in a world where mobs feel authorized on principle to decide who may speak.
The question is, will mob rule win the day?

48 years since Resolution 242: The Cornerstone of the Arab-Israeli peace process - Dr. Dore Gold

by Dr. Dore Gold

With the multiplicity of international proposals emerging about how to restart the peace process in the months ahead, now is the time to recall exactly what Israel's rights are in its territorial dispute with the Palestinians over the future of the West Bank.

Those rights were first enshrined in the most famous and important U.N. resolution in the peace process, U.N. Security Council Resolution 242. This month marks the anniversary of the resolution. The first draft was proposed on November 7, 1967, while the final draft was adopted unanimously by all 15 Security Council members on Nov.ember 22 that year. Nearly fifty years have passed since that time. Nonetheless, it remains as relevant for peacemaking as ever.

Understanding the significance of Resolution 242 is not an exercise in the study of some obscure aspect of decades old diplomatic history. Over the years the resolution evolved into the basis of the entire peace process, including the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, the 1991 Madrid peace conference, the 1993 Oslo Accords, the 1994 Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty, and draft agreements with Syria. Back in 1973, on the eve of the Geneva Peace Conference, the U.S. even provided a letter of assurance to Israel that it would prevent any party from tampering with Resolution 242. Israeli diplomacy sought to protect Resolution 242 as though it was a crown jewel of the Jewish state.

Resolution 242 is best known for its famous withdrawal clause, which did not call on Israel to pull back to the pre-war 1967 lines. While the Soviet Union insisted that the resolution specifically call for "a withdrawal from all the territories occupied" by Israel in the Six-Day War, the U.S. and Britain countered with very different phraseology that was reflected in the final draft,  eventually adopted by all 15 members of the Security Council. It would only state that there had to be a withdrawal "from territories."

The U.S. and Britain recognized that the pre-1967 line had only been an armistice line from 1949 and was not a final international border. Indeed, Article 2 of the original 1949 Armistice Agreement between Israel and Jordan clearly stipulated that it did not prejudice the territorial "claims and positions" of the parties since its provisions were "dictated exclusively by military considerations."

The battle over the language of the withdrawal clause was not just conducted by overly legalistic advisers to the British and American missions to the U.N.; everyone understood that these distinctions had enormous significance, for they went all the way to the apex of power in both Washington and Moscow and were settled in direct communications between President Lyndon Johnson and Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin.

The British, under Prime Minister Harold Wilson, were the main drafters of Resolution 242. Their Ambassador to the U.N. in 1967, Lord Caradon, clarified what the language of the withdrawal clause meant in an interview published in 1976 in the Journal of Palestine Studies: "We could have said, 'Well, you go back to the 1967 line.' But I know the 1967 line, and it's a rotten line. You couldn’t have a worse line for a permanent international boundary. It’s where the troops happened to be on a certain night in 1948. It’s got no relation to the needs of the situation. Had we said that you must go back to the 1967 line, which would have resulted if we had specified a retreat from all the occupied territories, we would have been wrong."

Any Israeli withdrawal had to be to "secure and recognized borders," as the resolution stated. Lord Caradon's American counterpart, Arthur Goldberg, fully supported this interpretation repeatedly over the years, such as in his 1988 statement: "The resolution stipulates withdrawal from occupied territories without defining the extent of withdrawal." Goldberg was a legal scholar who served previously on the U.S. Supreme Court, before coming to the U.N.

Others backed his interpretation as well. The senior U.S. figure in the State Department with responsibility for the Middle East, Joseph Sisco, went on NBC's Meet the Press on July 12, 1970, and also said: "That resolution [242] did not say 'withdrawal to the pre-June 5 lines'.'' In short, there was no argument about how Resolution 242 should be interpreted. Israel had rights to retain some West Bank territory, so that at the end of the day it could obtain defensible borders in any future political settlement.

By the way, it is notable that according to Resolution 242, Israel was entitled to this territory without having to pay for it with its own pre-1967 territory. There were no land swaps in Resolution 242. Nor was there any corridor crossing Israeli sovereign territory so that the West Bank could be connected to the Gaza Strip (just as there is no land corridor across Canada connecting Alaska to the rest of the U.S.). These diplomatic innovations were thought of by negotiators in the 1990s, but Israel in no way is required to agree to them, according to Resolution 242. In his memoirs, Abba Eban, then Israel's foreign minister, described the readiness of the U.S. and Britain, in particular, to agree to a revision of the pre-war boundaries as a "major breakthrough" for Israeli diplomacy.

Yet there were also efforts underway over the years to erode this Israeli achievement. Some diplomats argued that the French version of the resolution said "from the territories," rather than "from territories." Anglo-American diplomacy had carefully avoided the definite article in the English version. Whether the French version was a translation mistake or a consequence of how French grammar deals with abstract nouns didn't matter. Resolution 242 was negotiated in English, and 10 out of 15 members of the U.N. Security Council were English-speaking countries. Thus the English version of Resolution 242 was the decisive version to work with.

In 1970, British Prime Minister Wilson had been replaced by Edward Heath. In January 1973, Britain joined the European Economic Community, leading to a major erosion of its position on Resolution 242. On Nov. 6, 1973, in the aftermath of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the EEC issued a joint declaration which reflected its own growing sense of vulnerability to threats of an Arab oil embargo. It was a time when no European state would even allow U.S. cargo aircraft with badly needed spare parts for the IDF to refuel on their way to Israel - only Portugal agreed, but insisted on the U.S. using its airfield in the Azores. Europe as a collective felt it needed to appease the Arab oil-producers. As a result, the EEC declaration, which now included Britain, explicitly stated that Israel had to withdraw to the armistice lines of 1949. Under pressure, the British abandoned the essence of a resolution that they themselves had drafted six years earlier.

One of the intriguing aspects of Resolution 242 was that it said nothing about Jerusalem. In a letter to The New York Times on March 6, 1980, Arthur Goldberg wrote: "Resolution 242 in no way refers to Jerusalem, and this omission was deliberate." He explained that he never described Jerusalem as "occupied territory." Goldberg was reacting to the policy of the Carter administration, which was criticizing Israeli construction practices in east Jerusalem and misrepresenting Israel's legal rights. Goldberg believed that the status of Jerusalem had to be negotiated, but he insisted that "Jerusalem was not to be divided again."

Israel itself may have contributed to confusion about its rights in Jerusalem. The 1993 Oslo Accords formally recognized Jerusalem as a subject for future final status negotiations. Yet that did not mean that Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was prepared to re-divide Jerusalem. Negotiability was one thing; withdrawal was something else. In his final Knesset address, on Oct. 5, 1995, one month before he was assassinated, Rabin declared: "The borders of the State of Israel, during the permanent solution, will be beyond the lines which existed before the Six-Day War. We will not return to the June 4, 1967 lines." Rabin spoke the language of Resolution 242. He added that Israel would retain "a united Jerusalem."

The effort to erode Israel's rights recognized in Resolution 242 has continued. Over the past few years, the Middle East Quartet suggested to Israel that if it would say that the basis of the negotiations would be the 1967 lines, then Mahmoud Abbas would come back to the negotiations. This strategy didn't work back then and contradicted Resolution 242.

Ultimately, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry succeeded in restarting negotiations without making the 1967 lines the basis of a final settlement. As Israel engages in the current phase of Middle Eastern diplomacy, it is imperative that it recall its legal rights, especially to those states who voted for Resolution 242 but now demand that Israel withdraw to the 1967 lines, contrary to what the U.N. originally established.

The Media is Free, and is Everywhere Chained to a Narrative - Steve Apfel

by Steve Apfel

What the media passes off as hard news is an aggravated protest over Palestinian rights and Israeli wrongs.

If there ever was a real line between news and opinion, it stopped being real in 1967. That was the year Israel licked belligerent Arab powers and took whole chunks of territory off them. The West marveled, but not for long. Humanity’s implanted fixation with the “Jewish problem” boiled up from an after-Holocaust slumber like a bubbling sea beast. Millennial antipathies were back at full strength. The media packed them into a narrative that conditions voting blocs and electorates down to this day. What the media passes off as hard news is an aggravated protest over Palestinian rights and Israeli wrongs. Anchors and editors slave away at a narrative garbled by animosity. None bother to hide it anymore. The narrative may have convinced audiences, but even more, opinion formers have convinced themselves that juggernaut Jews make life intolerable for underdog Palestinians who only want sovereignty. A brittle hysteria has settled on the media in every free country.A brittle hysteria has settled on the media in free countries, imparting an aura of menace.

To get the narrative across, to direct fury at Israel for being top dog, the media plays any number of games. I explained media games here and more in the book Hadrian’s Echo. Spiking stories, obscuring facts, reinventing the laws of war -- these are other tricks of the trade. Man is born free, and is everywhere in chains. The media is free, and is everywhere chained to a narrative that beggars belief. The narrative depends a lot on media-imposed censorship. Fear and bias impart the impetus.

Eason Jordan, a CNN executive, disclosed the fear in a New York Times piece in April 2003. Writing of the Iraqi war that deposed Saddam Hussein, Eason disclosed that CNN routinely canned “dangerous” items of news. Reports of murder and torture, wrote Jordan, were censored by CNN for the sake of the Baghdad bureau. “Awful things could not be reported because doing so would have jeopardized the lives of Iraqis, particularly those on our Baghdad staff… The secret police terrorized Iraqis working for international press services. Some vanished, never to be heard from again. Others disappeared and then surfaced later, with whispered tales of being hauled off and tortured in unimaginable ways. Obviously, other news organizations were in the same bind we were when it came to reporting.” There it is. For the sake of a continued CNN presence in Baghdad, the corporation canned news that could put its bureau at risk. Discretion was the better part of valor.

And so it is further afield. If Gaza and the West Bank are not Baghdad, they’re not havens for the media either. Threats, kidnapping, and occasionally murder are commonplace means of keeping reporters on a tight rein. Ramallah controls what the media may cover. After a double-suicide bombing in Tel Aviv, Palestinian policemen arrested al Jazeera's Gaza correspondent Seif al Din Shahin when he reported Fatah’s claim of responsibility for the atrocity. He was charged with "inflicting damage to the interests and reputation of the Palestinian people and their struggle."

A particularly brazen case of censorship occurred in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. When news of the horror broke, ecstatic Palestinians took to the streets. Yasser Arafat’s men arrived to break up the party before incriminating images could go viral. Photo journalists were trapped inside a Nablus hotel while the carnival in the streets went on. A cameraman for Associated Press Television News was taken to an office and threatened by Arafat's cabinet secretary, Ahmed Abdel Rahman, who hinted darkly that should any footage be broadcast, the PA could not “guarantee his life."

Widespread manipulation and control of the media -- foreign and local -- is amply documented. A 2001 report by The Independent Committee for Protection of Journalists wrote: “In the seven years since the Palestinian Authority took control over parts of the West Bank and Gaza, Chairman Yasser Arafat and his security apparatus have muzzled local press critics via arbitrary arrests, threats, physical abuse, and the closure of media outlets. Over the years, the Arafat regime has managed to frighten most Palestinian journalists into self-censorship.”

Further afield and years later, fear and cowardice stalk corridors in South Africa. Janet Smith, Deputy Editor of mass daily, the Star, phoned me. The paper was due to run my op-ed. Smith explained the bind it put her in. The Star received death threats when they published anything that offended Muslims. There’d also been a threat to burn down the Star’s building. In Smith’s own words, “It would be more than (her) life is worth” to publish the op-ed. As a sop the paper ran the article on the Letters Page. And for extra caution it renamed the letter writer: Steve became Ebrahim.

Then last month the selfsame Janet Smith interviewed the political head of Jihadi terrorist group, Hamas. Meshaal was in South Africa on an official visit -- the first country outside the Muslim world to give the terrorist leader red carpet treatment. Janet Smith, with fear and favour, drooled over Meshaal.

Janet Smith: “Hamas has long been in the vanguard of the struggle for the freedom of Palestinians, and armed struggle is familiar to South Africans. It is partly the reason why we have the freedom we have today. Our own president was a leader in that armed struggle. Yours is not very different to the armed struggle of the ANC. Before taking up arms, they had tried other means, but the regime was unmoved. However, you have made it very clear that your armed struggle doesn’t exist ubiquitously. You don’t have militia on a daily basis going into Israel or foreign territory. It exists as part of warfare and on specific targets. Is this correct?”

One thinks of four possibilities why a senior journalist of Christian background would transform an Islamic Jihadist into a noble freedom fighter. One, Smith was paid by Hamas to write the whitewash. Two, the Star’s Muslim employer twisted Smith’s arm; three, it provided outlet for Smith’s kindred anti-Jewish bigotry; or four, the paper was enticed, with dollars, to paint the billionaire international criminal, Meshaal, as white as snow.

Then came another sequel; and a different newspaper was caught up. A group calling itself South African Friends of Israel paid the Sunday Times to run a full page advert, setting out ugly facts about Hamas. The intention, SA Zionist Federation Chairman Ben Swartz explained, was to educate South Africans and members of the ruling party on what Hamas is about. The paper pulled the ad a day before publication, citing worries about offending some parts of the community. A week later the paper flip-flopped, agreeing to run the advert, albeit without the image of a Jihad-dressed, gun-toting fighter in Hamas colors.
“We received the advert very late last week and is common practice with adverts of this nature, needed to satisfy ourselves that it was within the bounds of the law,” said a spokesman for the Sunday . On why it now wanted the image of a Hamas fighter to be removed, the answer was: “We have a responsibility to ensure that content that is published in our newspapers does not stoke racial tension and discord and have always reserved the right not to accept certain adverts.”
Anton Harber, being a professor of journalism, can be no lover of Israel. Yet Harber was moved to opine that “if the Sunday Times had good reason not to carry (or to amend the advert) then we need to hear it. If they can’t give a good reason, it will look like they are just censoring opinions they are uncomfortable with.” Quite right. The media is free, and is everywhere chained to a mendacious narrative.
