A rocket was fired from southern Lebanon
toward Israel late Sunday night, Lebanese security sources said, and
residents of the Metula area in northern Israel reported hearing a
blast.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said an
explosion was heard and that soldiers were searching the area. She added
the cause was still being investigated.
A second Israeli military source said the explosion was probably caused by a mortar.
The rocket launch could be heard from the
Lebanese town of Marjayoun, about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the
border with Israel, residents in the Lebanese town said.
The Lebanese Al-Mayadeen media network,
affiliated with Hezbollah, reported that a rocket was launched toward
Israel from the Marjayoun area.
The incident came amid heightened tensions in the region over the civil war in Syria.
Syria had said it would respond to reported
Israeli air strikes earlier this month in Syria against Iranian missiles
that were being shipped to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Earlier on Sunday, two rockets were fired into
a Shiite district of southern Beirut after Hezbollah leader Hassan
Nasrallah pledged his group would fight in Syria until victory for
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Assad is battling a two-year rebellion in which the United Nations says at least 80,000 people have been killed.
