Notice to Readers of this (Midle east and Terrorism) Blog - Sally Zahav

by Sally Zahav

Blogger.com begins censoring articles.

Dear readers,

Recently, Blogger.com, which has been hosting this blog for more than 10 years, has begun censoring some of the articles that I post and issuing warnings on other articles. In response to this new level of censorship and infringement of my free speech, I am in the process of developing a blog on Substack. While I'm continuing to post on this blog, I have already posted some articles on Substack (so far, duplicates of what I post here). The intention is eventually to post all articles on the Substack blog instead of in this space, but for now, all articles will appear here.

Best regards to all,

Sally Zahav

IRS whistleblower bombshell expands Hunter Biden scandal to coverup, obstruction concerns - John Solomon

by John Solomon

"It's deeply concerning that the Biden Administration may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations," House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer says.

In the half century since Watergate, the adage that the coverup can be worse than the crime has been emblazoned in the American psyche of political scandal. And while historians still debate whether that adage was true or not for the Nixon scandal, allegations of coverup, false testimony or obstruction have transformed many a political controversy since.

On Wednesday, an IRS whistleblower's stunning disclosure to Congress that "preferential treatment and politics" were "improperly infecting" the Hunter Biden investigation instantly transformed the scandal that has most bedeviled the Biden presidency.

Lawmakers instantly began expanding their long-running influence-peddling probe into the Biden family's pursuit of millions of dollars in foreign business deals to questions of whether there has been a coverup, whether Attorney General Merrick Garland gave false testimony and whether the case offers a fresh example of what Republicans says is a two-tier system of justice.

"It's deeply concerning that the Biden Administration may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations," House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer, (R-Ky.), the lead Biden family investigator in the House, told Just the News. "The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability has been following the Bidens' tangled web of complex corporate and financial records."

"It's clear from our investigation that Hunter and other members of the Biden family engaged in deceptive, shady business schemes to avoid scrutiny as they made millions from foreign adversaries like China," Comer added. "We've been wondering all along where the heck the DOJ and the IRS have been. Now it appears the Biden Administration may have been working overtime to prevent the Bidens from facing any consequences."

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.), who has the legal authority to free the whistleblower from tax privacy laws so he can share his concerns with the public, vowed a swift and vigorous investigation.

"The Committee takes seriously any allegations of misconduct by government officials or offices and will, on behalf of American taxpayers, look into concerns that are brought to our attention," Smith said. "It is our responsibility to ensure the tax code is applied fairly and appropriately to all Americans — whether through the oversight efforts this Committee initiates or the need for oversight that is brought to our attention."

Across the Capitol, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said the allegations of political meddling in the tax case need to be viewed in concert with efforts by the Treasury Department to keep lawmakers from seeing suspicious activity reports filed for years by banks concerned by the Biden family's overseas financial transactions. Treasury recently relented and let House lawmakers view those reports.

"Why is the Department of the Treasury hiding the suspicious activity reports on the Biden family from the American people?" Cruz tweeted after spending most of his weekly podcast exploring the issue.

The IRS whistleblower, whose name has not been made public, specifically alleges two Biden DOJ political appointees have blocked career officials from bringing criminal tax charges and that the behavior behind closed doors calls into question Garland's testimony to the Senate that prosecutors have full authority to bring charges and that no political interference has been allowed.

According to a letter from the whistleblower's attorney Mark Lytle to Congress obtained by Just the News, the IRS agent revealed he is seeking to provide detailed disclosures about a high-profile, sensitive case to the tax-writing committees in Congress, which have special authority under federal tax privacy laws to receive such information. That could pave the way to share the details with other committees in coming weeks.

The letter does not state that the whistleblower disclosures are related to Hunter Biden. However, Just the News has independently confirmed the agent's allegations involve the Hunter Biden probe being led by Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, a Trump holdover, according to multiple interviews with people directly familiar with the matter.

In a letter Wednesday to Republicans and Democrats overseeing multiple oversight committees in Congress, Lytle wrote: "The protected disclosures: (l) contradict sworn testimony to Congress by a senior political appointee, (2) involve failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition of the case, and (3) detail examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected."

You can read the full letter here:

Hunter Biden has acknowledged since December 2020 that he has been under criminal investigation for tax matters, and his representative disclosed last year he paid overdue tax bills totaling $2 million. He has expressed confidence he will be cleared of criminal wrongdoing.

The IRS agent has a sterling record investigating tax crimes across the globe, including work on high-profile Swiss Bank prosecutions, and has won several merit awards. His emergence now in such a politically charged case is certain to inflame a debate over unequal justice in Washington. The whistleblower originally approached the IRS' internal watchdog and Congress late last year with the help of prominent Democrat lawyer Mark Zaid, who previously represented clients whose allegations about a call with the Ukrainian president led to Donald Trump's first impeachment in 2019.

The agent subsequently hired Lytle, a former federal prosecutor with significant experience in prosecuting complex tax matters with the Justice Department's Tax Division. Lytle also represented former Twitter head of Trust and Safety Yoel Roth in his recent congressional testimony and is currently defending a former FBI supervisor named Timothy Thibault who has been accused of pro-Biden political bias in anonymous whistleblower disclosures to the offices of Sens. Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan.

Lytle told lawmakers in his letter that the IRS agent has also disclosed his concerns to both the Treasury Department Inspector General for Tax Administration and Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz, the same watchdog who unmasked FBI abuses during the Russia collusion case.

People directly familiar with the case have described the disclosures to Just the News as focused primarily on improper politicization of the case at the Justice Department and FBI headquarters rather than at the IRS or Treasury Department.

Specifically, the agent has provided evidence that at least two Biden DOJ political appointees in U.S. attorneys' offices have declined to seek a tax indictment against Hunter Biden despite career investigators' recommendations to do so and the blessing of career prosecutors in the DOJ tax division.

He also alleges that Weiss told agents on the case that the Delaware U.S. Attorney asked to be named a special counsel to have more independent authority in the probe but was turned down, according to interviews.

The agent also alleged that specific DOJ employees placed strictures on questions, witnesses and tactics investigators may be allowed to pursue that could impact President Biden, according to the interviews.

The sources said the agent's decision to blow the whistle was prompted by sworn testimony from Garland that Delaware U.S. Attorney Weiss had full authority, free from political pressure, to pursue a case against Hunter Biden in any part of the country, according to interviews.

In an interview with Just the News, Lytle said he could not yet identify the specific case his client had raised concerns about or the specific political appointees whose actions or testimony raised concerns because of tax confidentiality laws. But he confirmed that one senior DOJ official's recent testimony played a role in the agent coming forward to blow the whistle.

"I can say that he's been working diligently on a high-profile case," the lawyer said during an interview on the John Solomon Reports podcast, explaining that his client "was concerned about some statements by a senior political appointee from the Department of Justice that contradicted what he knew to be the facts of the case."

Lytle said his client is a career law enforcement official who hasn't made any political donations and doesn't even use social media. "He is just a guy who likes his job as a law enforcement officer, as an investigator, and he takes it seriously, and he's dedicated," he said. "And when he sees something that is not routine and doesn't follow the rules, or ... something maybe is affected by politics — that's what made him come forward."

The agent wants both Democrats and Republicans to hear his account and be able to question him, Lytle said.

"He's insisted that when he comes forward, this is not to talk to just one party or the other party," the lawyer said. "He wants to make sure that when he tells his story, both sides are there, so that he can present it, and they can sort it out. He doesn't want to be accused of picking a side, even if that might happen anyway. But he has information, it's credible, and it's supported by emails and documents."

Lytle added that if his client is cleared to talk to Congress he also will be able to identify contemporaneous witnesses to corroborate his claims of political interference.

"I believe he'll be able to talk about these meetings that he attended, that were with both agents and prosecutors," he explained, "and how he summarized those meetings and put it in writing and distributed those to folks within the IRS and sometimes to other agents as well. And so those are all in writing, contemporaneous. And then there's emails too, so those are important documents that will ... I think, end up corroborating his credibility."

One of the issues key to the whistleblower's concerns involves which U.S. attorney's office has the authority to bring criminal tax charges and where. The whistleblower alleged that Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss could not legally bring charges in Delaware.  Because of where Hunter Biden lived at the time his tax returns were filed, Weiss needed the permission of Biden-appointed U.S. attorneys in other districts to bring charges outside of Delaware. The agent alleges two such U.S. attorneys appointed by Biden declined his requests, according to interviews.

In testimony as recently as last month, Garland told Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley that Weiss had full authority to bring charges in any district he needed. "If it's in another district, he would have to bring the case in another district," Garland said. "But as I said, I promise to ensure that he's able to carry out his investigation and that he'd be able to run it. And if he needs to bring it in another jurisdiction, he will have full authority to do that."

The IG has obtained contemporaneous government emails and memos in DOJ files documenting to IRS leadership what the agent believed was evidence of political interference and biased behavior by DOJ employees. The agent is willing to make the same evidence available to Congress, according to Lytle's letter.

David Weiss, the Justice Department and Hunter Biden's attorney Chris Clark have not responded for comment.

How Some Americans Support Terrorism Against Israel - Bassam Tawil

  • As far as the Palestinians are concerned, all Israeli Jews are "settlers" living in one big illegitimate settlement, Israel, which needs to be replaced by a 57th Muslim state...

  • They outspokenly consider construction everywhere in Israel a "settlement project" and all Israeli Jews "settlers."

  • Hamas and its patrons in Iran are openly opposed to Jews building homes not only in the West Bank and Jerusalem, but anywhere in Israel. The reason? The mullahs in Tehran -- and their proxies in Hamas, PIJ and Hezbollah -- believe that the entire country of Israel has no right to exist and state that Israel should be eradicated, primarily through Jihad (holy war).

  • The Iranian regime and its friends want to see no country supporting Israel -- not politically, not financially, not militarily. They want to see a weak Israel that they can then rip to shreds, as they have done, and are still doing, to Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

  • "The U.S. State Department reports that Iran provides some $100 million a year to Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad," multiple news outlets reported last week.

  • Iran and its proxy terror groups are already encircling Israel. They are sitting on its southern border, in the Gaza Strip, from where Hamas and PIJ continue to fire rockets regularly at Israel. They are sitting on Israel's northern border, in Lebanon and Syria, from where Hezbollah also has a strong political and military presence.

  • The Congressmen's letter, however, does not make any reference to these existential threats that Israel continues to face from Iran and Palestinian and Lebanese terror groups.

  • The Congressmen who signed the letter claim that US aid to Israel is being used to fund abuses of Palestinians' rights is, bluntly, nothing but libels and lies. Israel's counterterrorism operations are directed solely against the terrorists and their enablers, not against the Palestinian people, most of whom are not involved in the latest spate of terror attacks.

  • That is why most of the Palestinians killed in these operations were not civilians but armed terrorists.

  • These antics [using "human shields" -- innocent people deliberately placed in harm's way during incoming fire] are part of shopworn plan to try to make Israel, when it engages in a counterterrorism operation, look bad. As the schoolyard bully put it, "It all started when he hit me back."

  • If the members of Congress want to find out about human rights violations, they are invited to take a look at the repressive measures taken by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in the Gaza Strip against their own people.

  • Do the members of Congress who signed the letter have anything to say about the abuses committed by Palestinians against Palestinians? Will these Congressmen call on the US administration to halt funding to the Palestinian leaders who are abusing their own citizens?

  • On the same day the letter was published, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces said... "With divine grace, soon there will be nothing called the Zionist regime. The countdown for the disintegration of Zionism has begun."

  • Israel's ruthless enemies must be rejoicing each time they see Americans calling for punishing and imposing sanctions on the small state.

  • Israel and the Jews living in the land, for more than 100 years, have been under attack – since long before there ever were such political pretensions as "1948 borders" or "1967 borders."

  • Now, as Israelis are once again burying their dead, a group of US Congressmen, instead of standing with Israel and condemning the terrorists, have chosen to call for weakening Israel and preventing it from carrying out even its basic duty of defending itself against terrorists who murder people for the "crime" of being Jews.

  • The Congressional letter awards a gold medal to the terrorists: it sends the message that if you are a terrorist, the US has your back.

As Israel continues to face daily threats and terror attacks from Iran and its militia proxies, fourteen Democratic members of the US Congress have joined the Jihad (holy war) against Israelis by urging the Biden administration to reconsider US military aid to Israel.

The appeal, included in a letter signed by Rep. Jamaal Bowman and Sen. Bernie Sanders, was made public shortly after Palestinian terrorists shot dead a Jewish mother, Lucy Dee, 48, and her two daughters, Maia, 20, and Rina, 15, as they were driving to the north of Israel to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Passover.

In the letter, the lawmakers urged the Biden administration to ensure US taxpayer funds are not supporting "Israeli settlement projects," and to determine whether US military aid is in violation of the Arms Export Control Act, which stipulates that US weapons are sold only for legitimate self-defense. "Furthermore, we call on your administration to ensure that all future foreign assistance to Israel, including weapons and equipment, is not used in support of gross violations of human rights," the lawmakers said.

Lucy Dee and her two daughters, Rina and Maia, were among 19 Israelis murdered by Palestinian terrorists in the past two-and-a-half months. Last year, 33 Israelis were murdered and 192 injured in an unprecedented wave of terror attacks carried out by the Iranian-backed Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) groups, in addition to other militias affiliated with the Palestinian ruling Fatah faction headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Congressmen's letter ignores the dramatic increase in terror attacks against Israelis and makes no reference to the scores of innocent civilians murdered over the past year by Palestinian terrorists. The letter further ignores that Israel's counterterrorism measures, which aim to save the lives of Israelis and Palestinians alike, are a legitimate act of self-defense.

The Israeli measures, including raids on the homes of terrorists and confiscation of weapons and ammunition, are the direct result of a 300% increase in terror attacks over the past year. In 2022, there were more than 8,000 terror attacks, including 230 shootings, eight stabbings and seven car-rammings. When there is no terrorism, there is no need for Israel to launch counterterrorism operations.

By stating that the US should halt military aid to Israel, the signatories of the letter signatories of the letter are in fact saying that Israel has no right to defend itself against those who are openly calling for the elimination of Israel and engaged in daily attempts to murder Jews.

When Israel uses weapons, it is with the purpose of combating terrorism and protecting the lives of its people. When Palestinians use weapons, it is always with the aim of murdering Jews.

The Palestinians do not distinguish between a Jew living in Tel Aviv and a Jew living in the West Bank. As far as the Palestinians are concerned, all Israeli Jews are "settlers" living in one big illegitimate settlement, Israel, which needs to be replaced by a 57th Muslim state, as optimistically noted by the presence of "Palestine" among the 57 members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), reportedly the world's "second-largest inter-governmental organization."

The members of Congress, in their letter, talk about the need for the US to stop funding "Israeli settlement projects." If this happens, it would be a big boost for Iran and its proxies -- Hamas and PIJ in the Gaza Strip, and Hezbollah in Lebanon -- and even the Palestinian Authority. They outspokenly consider construction everywhere in Israel a "settlement project" and all Israeli Jews "settlers." As official Palestinian television remarked, "All Israel is 'our land Palestine' – including Safed, Haifa, Acre, and Jaffa," and "Israelis living in Haifa, Jaffa, and Be'er Sheva are 'settlers.'"

Hamas and its patrons in Iran are openly opposed to Jews building homes not only in the West Bank and Jerusalem, but anywhere in Israel. The reason? The mullahs in Tehran -- and their proxies in Hamas, PIJ and Hezbollah -- believe that the entire country of Israel has no right to exist (here, here, here and here) and state (here, here and here) that Israel should be eradicated, primarily through Jihad (holy war).

Iran and its agents are undoubtedly delighted to see the Congressmen's attacks on Israel and calls for halting US financial and military aid. The Iranian regime and its friends want to see no country supporting Israel -- not politically, not financially, not militarily. They want to see a weak Israel that they can then rip to shreds, as they have done, and are still doing, to Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

"The U.S. State Department reports that Iran provides some $100 million a year to Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad," multiple news outlets reported last week.

It is safe to assume that the letter signed by the Congressmen offers Iran's mullahs and their proxy militias a ray of hope that US politicians and lawmakers are also seeking ways to undermine Israel by depriving it of financial and military aid, hence facilitating their mission of eliminating it.

Iran and its proxy terror groups are already encircling Israel. They are sitting on its southern border, in the Gaza Strip, from where Hamas and PIJ continue to fire rockets regularly at Israel. They are sitting on Israel's northern border, in Lebanon and Syria, where Hezbollah also has a strong political and military presence. According to the Alma research center in northern Israel, "Hezbollah currently possesses several hundred advanced conventional weapons, 70,000 'regular' Long – medium – short missiles and rockets, 145,000 mortars of all kinds, and about 2,000 UAVs." -- all pointed at a country, Israel, about the size of New Jersey, and posing a genocidal threat.

The Congressmen's letter, however, does not make any reference to these existential threats that Israel continues to face from Iran and Palestinian and Lebanese terror groups.

The Congressmen who signed the letter claim that US aid to Israel is being used to fund abuses of Palestinians' rights is, bluntly, nothing but libels and lies. Israel's counterterrorism operations are directed solely against the terrorists and their enablers, not against the Palestinian people, most of whom are not involved in the latest spate of terror attacks.

That is why most of the Palestinians killed in these operations were not civilians but armed terrorists. Regrettably, a few civilians were unintentionally killed during the Israeli counterterrorism operations -- but that is what happens when terrorists operate in dense residential areas and shoot at Israeli troops from the rooftops and windows of private homes. The terrorists are using "human shields" -- innocent people deliberately placed in harm's way during incoming fire. These antics are part of shopworn plan to try to make Israel, when it engages in a counterterrorism operation, look bad. As the schoolyard bully put it, "It all started when he hit me back."

If the members of Congress want to find out about human rights violations, they are invited to take a look at the repressive measures taken by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in the Gaza Strip against their own people.

Where were these members of Congress when the Palestinian Authority security forces beat to death human rights activist Nizar Banat? Where were these members of Congress when Hamas recently arrested Salem al-Sabah, head of the University of Palestine? Hamas did not offer any explanation as to why al-Sabah was arrested, but according to unconfirmed reports he had been accused of "corruption" -- a charge that may have been spurious. Hamas often just arrests political activists, journalists and academics who dare to criticize the terror group or its leaders.

Al-Sabah's family and several academics denounced the arrest as "illegal and arbitrary."

Ibrahim Abu al-Naja, Palestinian Authority governor of Gaza, also expressed solidarity with al-Sabah: "It is important that we preserve our reputation and cultural and scientific heritage," he said. The University of Palestine issued a statement condemning the arrest, as well.

Under the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, there is no such thing as "free media." Palestinian journalists are targeted on a dismayingly regular basis.

Do the members of Congress who signed the letter have anything to say about the abuses committed by Palestinians against Palestinians? Will these Congressmen call on the US administration to halt funding to the Palestinian leaders who are abusing their own citizens?

On the same day the letter was published, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces said he was optimistic about the chances that Israel would soon be destroyed. "With divine grace, soon there will be nothing called the Zionist regime," he said. "The countdown for the disintegration of Zionism has begun." In official jargon used by the Iranian regime, Israel is called "the Zionist entity" or "the Zionist regime."

It is not clear whether the mullahs in Tehran were aware of the letter sent by their friends in the US Congress when they voiced hope that Israel was on its way to vanishing. What is clear, is that Israel's ruthless enemies must be rejoicing each time they see Americans calling for punishing and imposing sanctions on the small state.

Israel and the Jews living in the land, for more than 100 years, have been under attack – since long before there ever were such political pretensions as "1948 borders" or "1967 borders."

Now, as Israelis are once again burying their dead, a group of US Congressmen, instead of standing with Israel and condemning the terrorists, have chosen to call for weakening Israel and preventing it from carrying out even its basic duty of defending itself against terrorists who murder people for the "crime" of being Jews.

The Congressional letter awards a gold medal to the terrorists: it sends the message that if you are a terrorist, the US has your back.

A senior IRS agent has alleged that the Biden Justice Department has blocked criminal prosecution of Hunter Biden.

A senior IRS agent has alleged that the Biden Justice Department has blocked criminal prosecution of Hunter Biden.  A letter to Congress from Mark Lytle, the whistleblower's lawyer, indicated that the IRS agent is willing to reveal information about a high-profile tax case to the appropriate congressional committees.  Just the News has confirmed that the allegations concern Hunter Biden.

The whistleblower's evidence would conflict with Attorney General Merrick Garland's recent congressional testimony that decisions to bring charges against Hunter Biden was being left to the U.S. Attorney for Delaware, Trump-appointed David Weiss.

Iran’s Mullahs Use Ramadan to Crush Dissent - Struan Stevenson

by Struan Stevenson

Tyrants in a panic.

The Death Spiral of the Islamic Republic

With international condemnation at their brutal crackdown on protesters during the nationwide uprising that has now continued for seven months, it might have been imagined that Iran’s mullahs would have learned some lessons in moderation. The killing last September, of the young Kurdish girl, Mahsa Amini, by the morality police, for not wearing her hijab properly, was an outrage that has led to a denunciation by Amnesty International and other human rights organizations. The shoot-to-kill strategy that has killed more than 750 protesters, and the arrest of over 30,000, has triggered an unprecedented outcry from the civilized world. But, deaf to all demonstrations, the theocratic regime has continued on its repressive path.

Now, during the Nowruz (Persian New Year) holidays and the holy month of Ramadan, the police are demanding even greater powers to crush dissent. Hassan Karami, the commander of the regime’s Law Enforcement Forces (LEF) Special Units, has called for the number of security police to be doubled to confront the ongoing nationwide insurrection. Karami was sanctioned by the EU in April 2021 for his role in the savage response to mass protests that took place in November 2019, when more than 1,500, mostly young protesters, were killed. He has coordinated the use of lethal force for crowd control and the suppression of protests during the current uprising. His LEF Special Units have also been responsible for serious human rights abuse against prisoners detained during the disturbances. Karamihas boasted that confronting the protests would be part of the agenda of his LEF Special Units during the Nowruz holidays and Ramadan. He described the uprising as “extreme sedition” and told the state-run Mehr news agency that his units were covering the unrest and possible movement of enemies in at least 400 cities and regions and that this required a doubling of police numbers.

Meanwhile, to further the theocratic regime’s oppressive tyranny, the police and security services have shut down dozens of businesses and issued warnings to many others for disrespecting Ramadan fasting rules.A police official in Khuzestan Province said that 55 businesses, were shut down in Ahvaz, the capital of the province, for breaking the rules of fasting. Colonel Mohammad-Hossein Mohammadv and said 229 businesses were inspected, 55 were shut down and 14 others received warnings that they faced closure if they failed to abide by the rules. Inspections will continue until the end of Ramadan, he said. Similar inspections are being carried out in other cities across the country. The rules require restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, tea houses, ice-cream and juice bars to remain closed until fasting ends around sunset. In the capital Tehran, sunset falls at around 18:35 at this time of year.

The same rules are enforced in all public places including gyms, schools, universities and factories, where cafeterias and canteens are closed throughout the month of Ramadan. Even eating inside cars is forbidden. With echoes of Stalinist repression, the hard-line crackdown has seen authorities urging members of the public who witness anyone violating the fasting or hijab rules to send a text message to a special designated number online. Large government-sponsored billboards advise similar tell-tale action. Only restaurants situated inside hotels or in airports or stations, can apply for special licences to cater for tourists or travellers, provided their windows are screened so that anyone eating inside cannot be seen from outside. Even then, the police keep a careful control on the number of licences issued.

The mullahs ludicrously claim that those who eat, drink, or smoke in public during Ramadan, are exhibitionists who refuse to follow the fasting rules. Such behaviour is punishable by a sentence of 10 to 60 days in prison or up to 74 lashes, according to article 638 of Iran’s Islamic Penal Code. During the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims celebrate the fundamental messages of Islam – freedom, justice, mercy, and emancipation, 85 million beleaguered citizens of Iran have seen their rights and civil liberties crushed by the fascist theocratic dictatorship.

The Islamic Republic’s elderly Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has sought to position himself as the representative of God and Islam on earth. He regularly brands his opponents as enemies of God. Protesters can be accused of the spurious offence of moharebeh or ‘waging war against God’, which carries the mandatory death sentence. Since the 1979 revolution which ousted the hated Shah, but was hi-jacked by the mullahs, the main democratic opposition movement, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK), has been the key voice calling for freedom, justice and democracy. They have paid a high price for their dissent. More than 30,000 mostly MEK political prisoners were executed in 1988 in a massacre ordered by a fatwa from the then Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini. Courageous Resistance Units of the MEK have directed the current uprising across Iran.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the charismatic president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), of which the MEK is a key component, said in her Nowruz address that the MEK have always made it clear that Islam is a religion of compassion and emancipation, not what the fascist mullahs claim it to be. She emphasized that “Islam is not misogynistic but founded on freedom, equality and free choice for all individuals, regardless of their gender or religion”. She pointed out that the MEK has rigorously opposed religious compulsion, underlining that it runs counter to the teachings of Islam. Mrs Rajavi said: “The MEK’s selflessness in the face of the regime’s religious dictatorship has exposed Khomeini and his successors as demagogues who exploit Islam for their own interests, and as criminals who have imprisoned and oppressed the Iranian people, while spreading death, terrorism and fundamentalism throughout the region.”

As the uprising in Iran continues to gain momentum and the chants of “down with the dictator” and “down with Khamenei” can be heard in the streets, it is time for the US, the EU and the UK to take concrete steps to show their support for the Iranian people and their determined and courageous demands for regime change.

Nearly three-fourths of Americans say states a right to step in, resolve border crisis, survey - Madeleine Hubbard

by Madeleine Hubbard

The Convention of States Action survey was released ahead of its upcoming rally in Texas, in which supporters will call for stronger action at the border.

A large majority of U.S. voters say that the federal government is responsible for handling the costs of the crisis at the southern border, but nearly three-in-four said the states have the right to step up and address the crisis if the government does not, according to a poll released Thursday.

When asked whether "it is the responsibility of states or the federal government to handle these increased costs at the southern border?," 86.8% of respondents said it should be accountable, according to a poll from the Convention of States action in partnership with The Trafalgar Group.

Most respondents, 68%, said they are not very confident or confident at all about whether the federal government is focused on addressing the border crisis.

When asked whether states have the right to act if the federal government does not address drug and human trafficking at the southern border, 74.3% of U.S. voters said yes, but when broken down by party, the responses change dramatically. Less than half of Democrats, 49.6%, said states have the right to act, compared to 94.6% of Republicans.

The Convention of States Action released the survey ahead of its "HOW MANY MORE?" rally in Austin, Texas, in which participants are expected to call for stronger action at the border later this month.

"There’s a growing movement in the state of Texas – which these numbers reveal has the backing of the overwhelming majority of Americans – in support of legislation that would empower the Lone Star State to repel this ongoing invasion and fix the problem," Convention of States President Mark Meckler said. "Something can be done to address this crisis, and Texas must lead the way."

The poll was conducted with 1,096 likely general election voters from April 11-14, and it had a 2.9% margin of error.

The Eyes of Totalitarianism - John Perazzo

by John Perazzo

It’s not your grandfather’s Democrat Party.

The iconic broadcaster, author, and legal scholar Mark Levin recently observed: “As a nation we’ve now turned the corner. We’ve turned the corner into a hard tyranny…. I just want the audience to know that we are staring into the face of tyranny, that the Democrat Party is a totalitarian party.”

And indeed, it is. To recognize this, we need only to listen when Democrats tell us – repeatedly – of their burning desire to “transform” the U.S. into a radicalized cesspool by such means as:

  • ending the filibuster rule so they can forcibly ram their radical legislation through the Senate;
  • governing via presidential executive orders rather than navigating the normal legislative process;
  • promoting immigration and border policies designed to import massive blocs of foreigners who will eventually become reliable Democrat voters for generations to come;
  • turning the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico into new U.S. states, thereby allowing Democrats to permanently pack the Senate with four additional members of their party;
  • expanding the Supreme Court and packing it with newly appointed leftist ideologues;
  • openly defying that same Supreme Court whenever its rulings conflict with Democrat Party preferences;
  • forcibly censoring the free expression of any ideas that conflict with Democrat values; and
  • pursuing the impeachment and imprisonment of their political foes on the flimsiest pretexts imaginable.

Below is an abundant collection of remarkable quotes by which immensely powerful Democrats in recent times have openly and proudly promoted the objectives enumerated above, like the domineering totalitarian thugs that they are.

Barack Obama

During a campaign stop in Missouri five days before Election Day 2008, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama famously said, to thunderous applause: “Now, Mizzou, I just have two words for you tonight: Five days. Five days…. [W]e are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”

Three months earlier, when candidate Obama spoke in July 2008 to the open-borders group, National Council of La Raza, he stated that “together, we won’t just win an election; we will transform this nation.”

And a year before that, on July 17, 2007, candidate Obama spoke before the Planned Parenthood Action Fund to advocate for unfettered abortion rights and said: “I am absolutely convinced that we’re not just going to win an election, but more importantly we’re going to transform this nation.”

Indeed, nearly two decades earlier, in an interview published by the Daily Herald on March 3, 1990, Obama had candidly articulated his desire to “reshape America” and “be part of a transformation of this country.”

The Democratic Party’s 2016 Platform

In 2016, the Democratic Party’s official platform said that in an effort “to end institutional and systemic racism in our society … [w]e will push for a societal transformation.”

Joe Biden

At a March 26, 2019 presidential campaign event in New York City, Joe Biden said: “We all have an obligation to do nothing less than change the culture in this country. This is English jurisprudential culture, a white man’s culture. It’s got to change.”

On April 13, 2020, Biden said “we can transform this nation … so that [my administration] goes down in history … as one of the most progressive administrations since Roosevelt.”

On May 4, 2020, Biden characterized the coronavirus pandemic as an “incredible opportunity … to fundamentally transform the country.”

In early June 2020, Biden stated that America needed to make “revolutionary institutional changes.”

On July 4, 2020, Biden pledged to “rip the roots of systemic racism out of this country” and “transform” it.

On July 13, 2020, Biden promised to make “systemic” and “institutional” changes to American society.

On October 29, 2020, Biden channeled Obama’s famous utterance from 12 years earlier and said: “Five days left [until Election Day]. Five days. I believe when you use your power, the power of the vote, we literally are going to change the course of this country for generations to come.”

Shortly after two mass shootings that had killed a combined total of 18 people in Colorado and Georgia, White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced on March 24, 2021 that President Biden was planning to issue executive orders to address the issue of gun violence, and was “not waiting for anything to fail” in Congress.

In a September 9, 2021 speech announcing new federal COVID vaccine mandates, Biden said: “And tonight, I’m calling on all governors to require vaccination for all teachers and staff…. Let me be blunt. My plan also takes on elected officials in states that are undermining [teachers] and these lifesaving actions. […]  If they’ll not help, if these governors won’t help us beat the pandemic, I’ll use my power as president to get them out of the way.”

On September 25, 2021, Biden said the following about the $1.9 trillion infrastructure bill that he was promoting: “My first piece of economic legislation will “fundamentally change the structure and the nature of the economy in this country.”

On October 4, 2021, Biden – citing the October 18 deadline by which time the Democrat-controlled Congress was seeking to raise the federal debt limit in order to allow for more government borrowing – condemned Senate Republicans for using the filibuster rule to block such a measure. “Republicans just have to let us do our job,” said Biden. “Just get out of the way. If you don’t want to help save the country, get out of the way so you don’t destroy it.”

On October 5, 2021, Biden said there was a “real possibility” that Senate Democrats might use their razor-thin majority to suspend the filibuster rule so they could forcibly raise the debt ceiling even with no Republican support at all.

During a June 30, 2022 press conference, Biden was asked what “specific actions” he might take in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. “I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade in the law,” he said, “and the way to do that is to make sure Congress votes to do that. And if the filibuster gets in the way … we provide an exception for this, we require an exception to the filibuster for this action to deal with the Supreme Court decision.”

During a September 30, 2022 speech for Hispanic Heritage Month, Biden celebrated what he viewed as the political benefits of the mass migration – legal and illegal — of Mexicans and Central Americans into the United States. “When in American history has there been a circumstance where one ethnicity has the potential to have such a profound impact on the direction of a country?” he asked rhetorically. “Twenty-six percent of every child who’s in school today speaks Spanish — 26 percent,” Biden added.

Bernie Sanders

In October 2019, then-presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders said in a tweet: “Our campaign is not only about changing the system politically and economically. We will change the value system of this country.”

In August 2020, Sanders, who by then had dropped out of the presidential race, said that “when Joe Biden is elected president, when we have a Democratic House, when we have a Democratic Senate, we can begin the process of transforming this government and our nation.”

Charles Schumer

In a September 30, 2020 interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, then-Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer speculated about what he and his fellow Democrats could accomplish if they were to win both the White House and a majority in the U.S. Senate: “I’m not busting my chops to become majority leader to do very little or nothing, We are going to get a whole lot done. And as I’ve said, everything, everything is on the table.” He further elaborated: “I would — believe me, on D.C. and Puerto Rico … I’d love to make them states.”

On the afternoon of November 7, 2020 — shortly after America’s largest media networks announced that Joe Biden had won the Electoral College vote in the disputed 2020 presidential election — Schumer, raising a clenched left fist for emphasis, told a jubilant crowd of supporters in Brooklyn: “Now we take Georgia, and then we change the world! Now we take Georgia, and then we change America!” (This was a reference to the two upcoming Senate runoff elections slated for January 5, 2021 in Georgia. If the Democrats could win both, they would gain control of the U.S. Senate.)

In a January 30, 2021 interview with Al Sharpton on MSNBC’s Politics Nation, Schumer, who was now the Senate Majority Leader, re-emphasized his commitment to bringing transformational change to the United States: “Well, Rev, we have one goal: big, bold change in America” which would include “dealing with D.C. and Puerto Rican statehood.” He also articulated his desire to end the Senate filibuster rule, thereby empowering his party to ram its radical agenda down the throat of a deeply divided nation at a time when Democrats controlled both the House and Senate by the slimmest of margins.

At a March 16, 2021 press conference, Schumer spoke about the prospect of Democrats either dispensing with the Senate filibuster rule, or circumventing it by means of the budget reconciliation process (by which budget-related bills can pass with a simple majority and do not require 60 votes to overcome a filibuster). “[W]e must get bold change,” he said. “And if our Republican friends block it, we’re going to put our heads together and figure out the best way to go. Everything’s on the table. It’s plain and simple.”

  • This was a stark contrast to what Schumer had said about the prospect of ending the filibuster in 2005, when Republicans held a solid majority in the Senate. SaidSchumer at that time: “The ideologues in the Senate want to turn what the Founding Fathers called ‘the cooling saucer of democracy’ into the rubber stamp of dictatorship. We will not let them. They want – because they can’t get their way on every judge – to change the rules in midstream, to wash away 200 years of history. They want to make this country into a banana republic, where if you don’t get your way, you change the rules…. It would be a doomsday for democracy if we do.”
  • Schumer had similarly spoken out against ending the filibuster in April 2017, when he suggested that President Donald Trump should replace his Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, with “a mainstream nominee” who would be able to garner 60 votes in the Senate — rather than allowing the majority Republicans to do away with the filibuster and confirm Gorsuch with a simple majority vote: “Look, when a nominee doesn’t get 60 votes, you shouldn’t change the rules, you should change the nominee.”

On October 4, 2021, Senator Schumer, who wished to be able to raise the federal debt ceiling without any Republican support whatsoever, said: “We only ask that they [the Republicans] get out of the way, let Democrats pass it on our own …”

Nancy Pelosi

In September 2020, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared: “We can impeach him [Trump] every day of the week for anything he does.”

On October 12, 2021, Pelosi lamented the fact that some Democrats wished to scale back their party’s ten-year, $3.5 trillion “Build Back Better” spending bill. But she vowed that while the legislation’s price tag might be negotiated down, changes to the bill “only would be [made] in such a way that does not undermine the transformative nature of it.”

Jen Psaki

During an October 12, 2021 press briefing, White House press secretary Jen Psaki discussed the ongoing negotiation between Democrat legislators vis-a-vis the $3.5 trillion “Build Back Better” bill that the Biden administration was hoping to pass. “The president wants to make fundamental change in our economy, and he feels coming out of the pandemic is exactly the time to do that,” she said.

Maxine Waters

At a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation event on September 21, 2017, Rep. Maxine Waters asserted that Congress could impeach President Trump for any reason it chose. “Impeachment is about whatever the Congress says it is,” she said. “There is no law that can dictate impeachment. What the Constitution says is high crimes and misdemeanors, and we define that.”

In a July 22, 2019 tweet, Waters predicted that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s appearance before Congress on July 24 would open the door for Democrats to impeach President Trump “immediately” and then incarcerate him. Wrote Waters: “Impeachment first, prison next!”

After the Supreme Court officially announced its decision to strike down Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, Waters, flanked by fellow Congressional Democrat Al Green, joined a throng of pro-abortion activists outside the Supreme Court building and told reporters: “You ain’t seen nothing yet. Women are going to control their bodies no matter how they try and stop us. The hell with the Supreme Court. We will defy them!”

Ed Markey

In a June 30, 2022 appearance on MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson Reports, Senator Ed Markey exhorted the Senate to eliminate the filibuster rule and pass “abortion rights” that would circumvent the recent Supreme Court decision and permanently enshrine Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. Said Markey: “I think the Congress should take up the offer that Joe Biden has made to repeal the filibuster. Carve out of the filibuster an exception for abortion rights …”

Mazie Hirono

In an interview with CNN on March 5, 2021, Senator Mazie Hirono said: “I definitely support filibuster reform, and part of that is ending the filibuster. It could be totally, or it could be for certain kinds of bills, but I’m definitely open to making those kinds of changes so we can get things done …”

Dianne Feinstein

On March 19, 2021, Senator Dianne Feinstein released a statement saying that, contrary to her previously articulated position, she was now supportive of ending the Senate filibuster: “[I]f … Republicans continue to abuse the filibuster by requiring cloture votes, I’m open to changing the way the Senate filibuster rules are used.”

Bob Menendez

In a June 23, 2021 interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Senator Bob Menendez said he was in favor of enacting a “democracy exception” to the filibuster rule in order to enable Democrats to pass the “For the People Act,” their radical “election-reform” bill, with a simple majority in the U.S. Senate.

Andrew Cuomo

At a July 26, 2021 media briefing, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of a new initiative allocating $15 million in taxpayer funds to promote the vaccination of the 3.5 million New Yorkers who had not yet been inoculated against coronavirus. “We have to get in those communities,” he said, “and we have to knock on those doors, and we have to convince people, and put them in a car, and drive them, and get that vaccine in their arm. That is the mission.”

Cedric Richmond

On September 9, 2021, White House senior adviser Cedric Richmond stated that President Biden would “run over” any Republican governors who might try to resist the new federal vaccine mandates. “The one thing I admire about this president,” said Richmond, “is the fact that we are always going to put people above politics. And those governors that stand in the way, I think, it was very clear from the president’s tone [in his speech] today that he will run over them.”

Elizabeth Warren

On September 7, 2021, Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to Amazon.com CEO Andy Jassy, demanding that the company use its algorithms to suppress the sale of books that, according to the senator, were spreading “COVID-19 misinformation.”

Ilhan Omar

In September 2019, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough said it was “not appropriate” for Senate Democrats to attempt to pass their proposed pathway-to-citizenship provision by means of the budget reconciliation process which would require only a simple majority rather than the normal 60 votes. In response to that, Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar tweeted: “This ruling by the parliamentarian is only a recommendation. Sen. Schumer and the White House can and should ignore it.”

Mondaire Jones

During a House Judiciary Committee hearing on June 2, 2022, New York Democrat Mondaire Jones delivered an impassioned speech stating that Republicans would not be able to prevent the majority Democrats from using every trick at their disposal to pass gun-control legislation in Congress: “You will not stop us from advancing the Protecting Our Kids Act today. You will not stop us from passing it in the House next week. And you will not stop us there. If the filibuster obstructs us, we will abolish it. If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand it.”

Julian Castro

In January 2013, San Antonio mayor Julian Castro spoke with CBS News’ Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation and predicted that because of mass immigration from Central America — both legal and illegal — the state of Texas would soon change from majority-Republican to majority-Democrat. Said Castro with delight: “In a couple of presidential cycles, you’ll be on election night, you’ll be announcing we’re calling the 38 electoral votes of Texas for the Democratic nominee for president. It’s changing. It’s going to become a purple state and then a blue state, because of the demographics, because of the population growth of folks from outside of Texas …”

Pramila Jayapal

During a January 2, 2022 appearance on MSNBC’s The Sunday Show, Rep. Pramila Jayapal applauded Twitter for its decision to permanently ban the personal account of Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who, according to the social media giant, had been spreading “misinformation” about the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccines designed to combat it. “I think it’s just as well that we take one voice [Greene’s] that is deliberately spreading disinformation out of the mix as much as possible,” said Jayapal. “That’s certainly a good thing.”

Ruben Gallego

On February 22, 2022, Rep. Ruben Gallego called for government and law-enforcement agencies to forcibly seize and then give away the vehicles of truck drivers who were heading to the District of Columbia in a peaceful convoy to protest the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates. “Perfect time to impound and give the trucks to small trucking companies looking to expand their business,” Gallego tweeted.

Conclusion

There you have it – the Democratic Party in all its totalitarian glory. Whatever obstacles its members may face, their instinctive response is always the same: iron-fisted thuggery.

If the Senate filibuster rule thwarts the Democrats’ legislative desires, they portray it as an antiquated relic of a racist epoch and demand that it be canceled.

If Democrats’ control of the U.S. Senate hangs precariously in the balance, they demand the sudden creation of a group of brand new majority-Democrat states that each will yield two new Democrat senators.

If Democrats are unable to cobble together electoral majorities in a few crucial swing states, they import massive blocs of people from across the globe who will eventually become reliable Democrat voters for generations to come.

If the radical-left Justices who sit on the Supreme Court are outnumbered by their originalist colleagues, Democrats seek to expand the Court and then pack it with newly appointed leftist ideologues to rubber-stamp every Democrat agenda item.

When that same Supreme Court issues rulings that conflict with Democratic Party preferences, the Democrats pledge with passionate zeal to defy those rulings.

If anyone dares to challenge Democrat positions on matters like the merits of critical race theory, COVID vaccine mandates, “gender-affirming” surgeries for minors, or claims that the 2020 presidential election was rife with Democrat corruption, Democrats respond by demanding that the most influential social-media platforms on Earth should censor and ban such heretics from the digital public square.

And, when challenged by a former Republican President who was highly effective at exposing and mocking the vapidity of various leftwing ideals and policies, the Democrats, in the longstanding tradition of fascists and communists from across the globe, simply call for his impeachment, arrest, and imprisonment.

If Democrats are not the party of totalitarianism, what else would you call them?

California Goes Full Communist: Utilities to Base What They Charge on How Much You Make - Robert Spencer

by Robert Spencer

The real “progress” to which “progressives” are leading us.

The state of California is implementing full Marxism before our very eyes under the guise of “equity.” And so now there can be no possible doubt if there ever was for anyone: instituting Communism has been what “equity” initiatives have been about all along. Now three of its most powerful utility companies are saying that they’re going to charge based not on how much of their product was used, but on how much money the user makes.

In simpler times, if you bought something, you paid for it. Rich or poor, tall or short, black or white, female or male, wise or foolish, everyone paid the same amount for a product. But in our more enlightened era, we know how unjust that really is. It deprives the poor of access to vital goods and services, and that injustice must be redressed.

That’s what Communism is all about, at least in theory: leveling out economic differences between people by confiscating earnings from the rich and awarding them to those who have less. This is the fundamental reason why Marxism, despite its extraordinarily bloody historical record, still appeals to so many people, rich, poor, and in between: it appears to redress the injustices in life and provide everyone with a decent living.

The problem with it arises from the fact that capitalism is inescapable. It is an iron law. It is not actually an economic system that can be discarded and replaced with a better one. It is simply the way human interactions work. If the California utility companies are going to make people who have more money pay more for the same goods and services they could get for less money if they had less, there will be several results: wealthier people will seek to hide their wealth through various means, so as to pay the lower rate. Some enterprising entrepreneurs will make a good living by helping them do this. So from the Marxism of the utility companies will come more capitalism.

Also, people will see that there is no point in working harder to try to earn more money, as the state will just confiscate it in various ways. Consequently, people will work less, and less hard. The standard of living will decline, because productivity will have declined. This is why Communist countries have always been economic failures: they block the capitalist incentive that people have to work hard, and thus destroy the only path to prosperity.

That is the disastrous path that Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, and San Diego Gas & Electric are now planning to follow. ABC 7 in Los Angeles reported Friday that the three utility giants “filed a joint proposal this week for a flat-rate charge based on income.” Not a flat-rate charge, period, but one based on how much money you make. “The plan would break monthly bills in two parts: The fixed-income rate, plus a reduced usage charge based on consumption. Under the proposal, it would cost as little as $15 a month for low-income households and up to $85 more per month for households making more than $180,000 a year.”

What the utility companies don’t realize, because Marxists never realize, is that they will thereby be incentivizing being a low-income household and penalizing those making more than $180,000 a year. They will thus get more low-income households and fewer that make more than $180,000 a year. The old Marxist adage, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” rewards having a need, but not having an ability: those who produce are essentially made the slaves of those who do not. Since no one loves being a slave, this means that there will progressively be fewer people who have ability and ever more who have need. That’s the real “progress” to which Leftist “progressives” are leading us today.

All this is in the works in California because this is the way Gavin Newsom’s state government wants it: “The income-based bill proposal is part of the companies’ compliance with legislation passed by the California state government last year requiring these types of plans for utilities. The California Public Utilities Commission would have to approve the proposal and make a final decision by mid-2024. The fixed rate could start showing up on bills as soon as 2025.” After that, watch for the wall to be built around California to keep those who are productive from escaping becoming slaves to “equity,” unless the whole country has embraced Marxism by then.

New York City is Discovering that Legalizing Marijuana Wasn’t Really a Great Idea - Robert Spencer

by Robert Spencer

Welcome to the Progressive Utopia - with some downsides.

Decriminalizing marijuana, we’ve been told to the point of stupor for years, would simply be a matter of recognizing the way society has changed and coming to a mature accommodation of a widespread current practice. It would free up valuable police resources to deal with actual crimes and real criminals, and end a longstanding injustice in which — you guessed it! — people of color were, we were told, disproportionately targeted for arrest and prosecution. So the state of New York has legalized marijuana, and how’s it going? Doritos and Patchouli oil sales through the roof? Maybe. But there have been a lot of unexpected downsides.

The New York Post reported last Monday that “the Sunday night murder inside a Harlem ‘smoke shop’ near the corner of 125th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard — the second shooting in the neighborhood in the last year — is a savage reminder of the state’s stupendously disastrous legalization of marijuana.” It seems that the state went about the legalization by “virtually eliminating the entire criminal code pertaining to marijuana overnight.” Making matters even worse, “progressive state lawmakers, besotted by a woke vision of the pursuit of equity, decided to reserve the first retail licenses for felons and other ‘justice-involved’ individuals.” They wanted to make legalized marijuana “a vehicle for reparations.” Great idea!

The state has been slow to grant licenses to legal marijuana shops, however, so illegal ones have proliferated, and cops can do little or nothing to stop them, “because having weed on open display isn’t against the law — the cops have to be present to witness a sale in order to issue a violation.” But these places also often sell other illegal drugs and quickly become centers for other crimes as well. There has been “a sharp rise in robberies targeting illegal smoke shops around the city. There were 251 violent robberies in 2021, and more than double that number in 2022. This year, robberies are up another 10%.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has declared: “This cannabis stuff is a real problem!” He has, however, done nothing about it and insisted that it’s the state’s problem. Yet the city has plenty of problems of its own that arise from the legalization, and they aren’t all related to crime. Another unexpected byproduct of the proliferation of grass inside Gotham has been that the City That Never Sleeps has become the City That Always Sleeps. The Post’s Steve Cuozzo observed Sunday that all too many city stores are staffed by stoners who can barely understand, much less fulfill, customer orders.

“A license to get high,” Cuozzo says, “has turned service employees into zombies.” He adds: “I’ve lived in the city nearly all my life. I never had to repeat my highly complex Starbucks order — a ‘tall’ coffee — three times to get a response from the bummed-out barista, the way I do now.” He says that he now regularly encounters service workers who are “stoned up the wazoo, hollow-eyed, disengaged from their tasks, their breath reeking of weed.” This makes what used to be routine transactions into unpredictable adventures.

Cuozzo recounts: “I gave a guy at Pret a Manger a $20 bill for an $8 cup of soup. I asked for a bag. He took the $20 and promptly forgot the soup, my change, the bag — and me. He wandered off, inexplicably waving my Andrew Jackson like a flag, until I appealed to his colleagues.” He quotes a bank executive recalling that at a gourmet food shop, the cashier was “so out of it, staring into space while people waited in line. She forgot to give me my change. She closed the register. I had to wait for someone to come with the dreaded key. After ten minutes for a 30-second transaction, she didn’t even apologize.” Why should she apologize? She is the wave of the future, a citizen of the new nation, diverse, equitable, multicultural, and enlightened. She is the twenty-first-century American.

But reading Cuozzo’s stories raises the inevitable question: is it possible that earlier generations actually had a point in keeping marijuana and other drugs illegal? Did they realize the societal dysfunction that legalizing such substances could cause, and opted instead not to make it so easy for people to turn themselves into barely functioning messes? Is it time for America to realize that the “progressives” are taking us to a society that is unlivable in all kinds of ways and that some regress is now in order?
