Ukraine reminds us that our historical fight for freedom continues until this very day.
A defiant Jewish leader inspires his people to remain steadfast against the brute force and military power of an oppressor. His inspirational actions motivate his people to fight for their freedom—for their ability to express themselves and embrace their identities. In the process, he demonstrates to the world the unyielding resolve of his nation and its dedication to self-determination.
This describes the story of Passover and Moses, who led the Israelites from a life of slavery and subjugation in Egypt to one of liberty, spurning the mighty Egyptian army in the process. But the story also applies to Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, who over the last six weeks has led a brave defense of his homeland and his people against Putin’s lawless invasion.
Unfortunately, NATO and other countries refuse to send their soldiers to help Ukraine leaving Ukrainians to fend for themselves on the battlefield. Similarly, when the Jewish people were attacked throughout history, no one came to protect them. The establishment of the State of Israel remarkably changed this—Jews around the world gained a new home and became a place of refuge. A great example is in 1976 when Israel sent its special forces to Entebbe Airport in Uganda, 2,500 miles away, to rescue the mostly Jewish passengers of a kidnapped TWA flight. Similarly, since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, thousands of Jewish refugees have found a secure home in Israel.
As the world continues to face turmoil and antisemitism is on the rise, ensuring the safety and security of Israel has become more critical for the Jewish people, as evidence by the below video of the historical moment of Israeli F-15 fighter jets soaring over Auschwitz in 2003, ensuring that as long as Israel and the IDF exist, there will never be another Holocaust or genocide of the Jewish people.
To ensure the survival of the Jewish State, we must be relentless in the fight against Israel’s enemies and the enemies of her allies, particularly the U.S. In our article, “Why Going Back to the Iran Nuclear Deal is Folly,” published last year, we discuss the devastating consequences of reviving the Iran deal for both Israel and the U.S.
This Passover, as we celebrate our ancestors' freedom from slavery, we must remember that our historical fight for freedom continues until this very day. We must also look at what’s happening in Ukraine and recall the famous words of Rabbi Hillel: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, then when?”
