Europe, Trump and the Iran Deal - Amir Taheri

by Amir Taheri

Earlier this month, the spokesman for the Iran Atomic Energy Agency told a press conference that Iran's nuclear project was "going full speed ahead" with "new and more ambitious plans under preparation."

  • If we were to go by Mogherini's or Westmacott's "commitment" to an unchangeable "Iran Deal", Britain and France should have never denounced the "peace accord" that Chamberlain signed in Munich in 1939.
  • However, the EU argument about "respecting signatures" on the Iran Deal has another problem, because nobody signed anything.
  • Ironically, the only P5+1 member that has partially complied with the deal is the US, including by Mafia-style smuggling of $1.7 billion cash to Tehran.
  • Earlier this month, the spokesman for the Iran Atomic Energy Agency told a press conference that Iran's nuclear project was "going full speed ahead" with "new and more ambitious plans under preparation."
The so-called "Iran nuclear deal," a witches' brew concocted by that most deserving of Nobel peace laureates, Barack Obama, has furnished the theme of many bizarre diplomatic twists and turns. The latest is an attempt by the European Union to persuade President Donald Trump to renege on his campaign promise to improve or scrap the deal.

During the past year, the EU's foreign policy point-woman, Federica Mogherini has been collecting air-miles calling on world capitals to demand "commitment" to the deal, as if this were an article of faith in an as-yet undefined religion.

The retiring British Ambassador to Washington, Sir Peter Westmacott, has been granting interviews to Iranian media, demanding kudos for having spent "much time and energy" trying to persuade the US to stick by the deal.

Outgoing German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel also boasts about having spent much energy in his final months in office "defending the deal" as a Crusading knight protecting a holy relic.

And now is the turn of the French Ambassador to Washington, Gerard Araud, to launch a Twitter campaign to persuade the Trump administration to "honor" that most questionable item in Obama's legacy.

Basically, the Europeans advance four arguments.

The first, advanced by Westmacott, is that discarding the deal could damage the credibility of the "major powers", that is to say Britain, France, Germany and the US that signed it along with China and Russia.

There are two troubles with that argument.

The first is that it assumes that any diplomatic deal should be treated like a Catholic marriage that one abides "til death do us part". Such an assumption would mean the end of diplomacy as the art of responding to changing realities.

If we were to go by Mogherini's or Westmacott's "commitment" to an unchangeable "deal", Britain and France should have never denounced the "peace accord" that Chamberlain signed in Munich in 1938.

However, the EU argument about "respecting signatures" has another problem, because nobody signed anything.

The so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is no more than a press release stating a set of desirable moves by Iran and the P5+1 which, incidentally, didn't include the EU as such. Moreover, there are significant differences between the JCPOA's English and Persian versions, making various imaginative re-readings, à la Roland Barthes or Jacques Derrida, possible. Mogherini cannot claim respect for "signatures" which never happened and that, had they happened, would not have included the EU.

The second argument is that the deal is working and, thus, the dictum "if it ain't broken why fix it" applies.

That assumption is not borne out by facts.

Iran and the P5+1 have either tried to circumvent or have brazenly broken their promises.

Sir Peter, the retired UK diplomat, certainly knows that his government, in violation of the deal, still refuses to allow the Iranian Embassy to open a bank account in London. Nor has the UK government unfrozen more than $600 million in Iranian assets.

The Germans and the French still refuse to issues export guarantees to firms seeking trade with Iran. Huge memorandums of understanding are signed but put on the back-burner, as Iran remains subject to sanctions by the United Nations, the EU and US.

As for Russia, during an official visit to Iran last week, Chairman of the Russian Duma Vyacheslav Volodin heard an avalanche of complaints.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown what he thinks of Iran, a supposed ally notably in Syria, by his recent treatment of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Ankara. At the end of a "summit" with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Rouhani demanded a on-on-one meeting with Putin. The Russian President consented to a brief standing encounter that lasted around 8 minutes. Tsar Vladimir had no time to sit down with the Iranian mullah for a cup of tea.

As for China, it says Iran could use its frozen assets, piled up through oil exports to the People's Republic, only by buying Chinese goods.

Beijing even refuses to let the 3,000 or so Iranian students in China to receive their stipends through banks, forcing the embassy to send people around to distribute cash among the budding scholars.

Ironically, the only P5+1 member that has partially complied with the "deal" is the US, including by Mafia-style smuggling of $1.7 billion cash to Tehran.

Iran, for its part, asserts that there has been no change in its nuclear project.

Earlier this month, spokesman for Iran Atomic Energy Agency Behruz Kamalvand told a press conference in Tehran that the Iran's nuclear project was "going full speed ahead" with "new and more ambitious plans under preparation."

More importantly, Iran has managed to block international inspection of key research and development centers by claiming they are military sites and thus off limits.

Less than half of Iran's enriched uranium stocks have been shipped abroad, along with 10 percent of plutonium accumulated at the Arak plant.

Last week, marking National Nuclear Day, Rouhani unveiled what he called "83 new nuclear projects" as slaps in the face of the American "Great Satan."

Why should Mogherini or Araud beat their chests about a "deal" not honored by either side?
The ambassador advances one last argument: If you scrap the "deal" how could you be sure Iran will not go "full speed ahead" with its nuclear ambitions?

This is a casuistic argument: accept the bad for fear of getting the worse.

Since the JCPOA was unveiled Iran's national currency has fallen by some 40 percent to an all-time low against foreign currencies, including the Iraqi dinar and the UAE dirham.

The Tehran government cannot regularly pay the salaries of its employees. Had it not been for the cash smuggled and funneled by Obama, the mullahs would have been unable to pay their military either. Right now, Tehran has difficulty bankrolling the Lebanese "Hezbollah" and paying the salaries of Bashar al-Assad's regime forces and civil service.

So the Obama "deal", as Trump said during his campaign, is a bad deal.

What Trump didn't say was that the "deal" was bad, both for Iran and the rest of the world.
Araud would do well to re-read what Laurent Fabius, then France's Foreign Minister, said in 2015: "France will not accept a deal if it is not clear that inspections can be done at all Iranian installations ... We'll accept a deal, but not any deal."

It was partly because of France's refusal to give the JCPOA legal status by signing that the Obama "deal" was launched as an informal initiative. Interestingly, Araud who now campaigns for the "deal" was appointed by Fabius, who took care to have a pinch of salt about it.

In ironic twist, Syria to head UN panel on chemical disarmament - Israel Hayom Staff

by Israel Hayom Staff

NGO U.N. Watch calls out European countries for not speaking out • U.S. State Department calls the U.N. decision an "outrage."

Despite allegations that it carried out yet another deadly chemical weapons attack last Saturday, Syria will next month chair the United Nations disarmament forum that produced the treaty banning chemical weapons.
Syria will assume the presidency of the 65-nation Conference on Disarmament, based in Geneva, on May 28 and hold it over four weeks, until June 24.
Hillel Neuer, the president of the Geneva based nongovernmental organization U.N. Watch, called out European countries for not speaking out against the U.N. on this matter.
"If U.K., France, Germany & others stay silent as Syria assumes presidency of U.N.'s Conference on Disarmament – the body which produced the treaty against chemical weapons – this will make a mockery of everything they said this week," Neuer tweeted.
"Having the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad preside over global chemical and nuclear weapons disarmament will be like putting a serial rapist in charge of a women's shelter," said Neuer.
The NGO announced it intends to hold protests outside the U.N. hall.
U.S. State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert also condemned the U.N.'s decision, calling it an "outrage."
"That would be an outrage if Syria were to take control of that," Nauert said. "We have seen these types of things happen at the United Nations before, where suspicious countries, countries that run against everything that an individual committee should stand for, will then head up that committee."
Under U.N. rules, the Syrian ambassador to the forum, Hussam Edin Aala, will "represent the body in its relations with states, the General Assembly and other organs of the United Nations, and with other international organizations."
While the post is largely formal, "Syria holding the president's gavel is liable to seriously undermine the U.N.'s credibility, and will send absolutely the worst message," Neuer said.

Erdogan's Twisted Visions - Joseph Puder

by Joseph Puder

Who he sees as terrorists and freedom fighters.

The international reaction to Hamas’ provocative “March of Return” had its predictable voices mired in typical hypocrisy.  The European Union (EU), and the Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for “an independent and transparent investigation” into Israel’s use of live ammunition to quell the rioting.  The United Nations (UN), that “paragon of virtue,” called for an emergency Security Council meeting with the aim of condemning Israel.  France called on Israel to “show restraint.”  The most blatant attack on Israel came from Turkey’s dictator Recep Tayyip Erdogan.  He called Israel’s Prime Minister “a terrorist.”

The EU seems to be interested in investigations only when Israel is involved and when the victims are Palestinians.  That is not the case when Israelis are murdered by Palestinian terrorists.  The UN, beholden to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which is its most powerful component in the General Assembly and other UN institutions, is clearly a biased party. The UN has habitually devoted the lion’s share of its proceedings to condemn Israel.  Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the UN observed (12/10/2017): “The UN has outrageously been of the world’s foremost centers of hostility towards Israel.”

Turkey’s President Erdogan exceeded all others in his hypocritical righteous indignation.  At a Saturday speech (April 1, 2018) in Istanbul, Erdogan declared: “I strongly condemn the Israeli government over its inhumane attack.”  He was referring to the Hamas organized riot called the “March of Return,” in which 15 Palestinians died in clashes with Israeli soldiers.  Erdogan added on his social media page, “Israel will get trapped under the oppression it inflicts in Palestine. We will continue to support our Palestinian sisters and brothers in their rightful cause until the very end.”

The following day, Erdogan continued his attack, this time on Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally, calling him “a terrorist.”  In a televised speech in Adana, Southern Turkey, he shouted “Hey Netanyahu! You are an occupier.  And it is as an occupier that you are on those lands.  At the same time you are a terrorist.”  Reuters quoted Erdogan the same day as saying (referring to Israel)

“You are a terrorist state.  It is known what you have done in Gaza and what you have done in Jerusalem.  You have no one that likes you in the world.”  This last remark revealed Erdogan’s anti-Semitic disposition.

Netanyahu, on his part, responded to Erdogan’s attacks stating that, “The most moral army in the world will not accept the moral preaching from someone who for years has been bombing a civilian population indiscriminately.” It was a clear reference to Erdogan’s brutal attacks against unarmed Kurdish civilians in Turkey, Syria and Iraq.  Moreover, Turkish forces occupied Northern Cyprus in 1974, and a large number of Turkish-Muslim settlers from Anatolia, Turkey, have moved to Northern Cyprus.

Michael Totten in World Affairs, (March 1, 2018) wrote: “Turkey’s increasingly paranoid and deranged President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insists that everyone involved with the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, even peripherally, is a terrorist.”  Since the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, which might have been engineered by Erdogan himself in order to seize emergency powers, he has purged more than 150,000 people, including university professors, journalists, and novelists.  At the same time, Erdogan has mounted a bloody campaign against alleged Kurdish “terrorists” and their supporters inside Turkey.  In the process he has jailed thousands of Turkish citizens.  One such victim is a former Kurdish member of the Turkish parliament named Hasip Kaplan.  Erdogan’s terror against his Kurdish citizens includes the arrest of more than 11,000 members of the secular, and predominantly Kurdish party, (in the Turkish parliament) the People’s Democratic Party (HDP).

The Washington Post (January 31, 2018) reported that under the ironic name of “Operation Olive Branch,” Turkish forces in January waged war against Syrian Kurds in the predominantly Kurdish populated enclave called Afrin. “Reports suggest Turkish air and artillery strikes have damaged villages, and killed civilians there, in addition to killing dozens of Syrian Kurdish fighters.”

Erdogan’s hypocrisy is transparent and outrageous.  Erdogan supports Hamas’ terror against Israel, but labels all Kurds as terrorists.  Unlike Israel, whose sovereignty and the lives of its citizens are threatened by Hamas’ terror - Turkish, Syrian and Iraqi Kurdish civilians are not threatening Turkey’s sovereignty.  And while the Kurdish PKK has been engaged in terror, most Kurdish civilians in Turkey, Syria and Iraq reject PKK’s terrorist methods.  Erdogan’s army bombed and killed innocent Kurdish civilians in their sleep, while Israeli soldiers exhibited extra caution to not harm the innocent protestors.

“The March of Return” as the Hamas instigated riot was labeled, was a long planned campaign on which the terrorist organization has spent $15 million, according to Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.  Despite the dire economic situation in Gaza, (a CIA estimate of unemployment for 2017 at 26.7%, and in reality closer to 40% unemployment), and major dependency on international welfare, Hamas used funds at its disposal to recruit “protesters” from mosques, schools, and randomly on the streets of the Gaza Strip.  Hamas used social media, as well as radio and television to promote what is meant to be the “March into Israel.” On the ground, not far from the border crossing into Israel, Hamas prepared embankments, water pipes, portable toilets, and tents.

It is clear to everyone that Hamas is in utter desperation, and it is attempting to rouse the Gaza populace to be its “sacrificial lambs” for its selfish quest to get headlines and deflect attention from the misery it has inflicted upon the people of Gaza.  Hamas seeks to mobilize the international community to act against Israel, counting in particular on the United Nations, and the European Union for political and financial support.  Hamas can no longer provide economic sustenance to the Gazan people, nor is it willing to hand over governance of the Strip to the Palestinian Authority (PA).  The PA has in turn cut down payments to civil servants (particularly following the attempted assassination of PA Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah) in Gaza, putting further constrains on Hamas.

The Gulf Arabs have more pressing issues than supporting the Palestinian Authority intransigence, and Hamas’ adventurism.  (Jordan is constrained by its majority Palestinian population, and is compelled to express support for Palestinian victims in Gaza). They are preoccupied with countering Iran’s hegemonic ambitions and its attempts to overthrow the pro-Western Sunni regimes.  Gulf Arabs view Iran, not Israel, as a major existential challenge.  Saudi Arabia likewise considers Turkey’s Muslim Brotherhood oriented dictator, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as a major challenger to its leadership position in the Islamic world.  For Hamas’ Sunni-Muslim leadership, Iran’s Islamic Republic is a reliable source of support, albeit, it is a Shiite regime.  Turkey’s Erdogan is however, Hamas’ major political and economic supporter, and Hamas is banking on him for both political support, and financial relief.

The megalomaniacal Erdogan sees himself as the Sunni-Muslim Caliph, and the Sultan of the Muslim world, much like his Ottoman predecessors.  He has threatened to attack the U.S. troops imbedded with Kurds in Northeastern Syria, and calls ordinary Kurds “terrorists.” Yet he fully encourages and supports Hamas’ terror against Israel.  That is simply blatant hypocrisy.

NY Times finds “journalists,” no terrorists among Hamas rioters - Jack Englehard

by Jack Englehard

Yes, come join Hamas at its next picnic…bring the kids, and don’t forget your swastika banners.

We shouldn’t be surprised, but once again The New York Times has twisted itself into a pretzel as a means to defame Israel.

Of the recent tire-burning Hamas riot at Israel’s border, the Times editorializes that Israel purposely targeted Yasser Murtaja, who was shot and killed while supposedly serving as a Palestinian Arab journalist. The Times is outraged that this should have happened – while, in the same breath, admitting that Hamas is a “ruthless” organization, which “has drawn tens of thousands of Palestinians to Gaza’s border with Israel.”

In that case, what have we got? We’ve got “the fog of war.” This means there’s no telling what really happened.

There’s even a chance that this journalist was downed by purposeful “friendly fire.” Hamas and the other Islamist terrorists do it all the time.

They did it when they staged the Mohammad al-Dura incident, which prompted the bloody Second Intifada, which we recorded on page 147 of “The Bathsheba Deadline,” where we also recorded Daniel Seaman, Israel’s press secretary at the time, who found that media manipulation is the rule between Palestinians and journalists.

Quote from the BBC Gaza correspondent Fayad Abu Shamala at a Hamas rally in Gaza –
“Journalists are waging the campaign shoulder to shoulder together with the Palestinian people.”

Plus in this instance, “fog of war” has a double meaning, demonstrably so. Hamas burned those tires to blind the IDF. That was the plan.

Thus – who should be held responsible if mistakes did happen? As black smoke filled the air exactly as Hamas had it orchestrated, somehow, according to the Times, in all that chaotic darkness, it fell on Israel’s security forces to distinguish between a camera and a Molotov cocktail. Hamas? The terrorists? Blameless.

Next, we reach total absurdity when the Times editorialists do say that there was rock-throwing, border-breaching with perhaps weapons and explosives.

Oh? But besides that, besides the violence, “the protest was peaceful.” So says the Times with a straight face.

Harmless terrorism – do you understand? Peaceful violence – is that clear to you from the Style Book of The New York Times?

More than peaceful, it is positively 1960s kumbaya-time as whistled by Hamas and as danced in rhythm by The New York Times.

So we read that “many of the demonstrators stayed far back from the heavily fortified fence to PICNIC and hold a tent camp sit-in.” How is that for a doozy?

Yes, come join Hamas at its next picnic…bring the kids, and don’t forget your swastika banners.

Listen to the Times and what you get is Joan Baez and the bygone “flower children” instead of a terror group, Hamas, whose existence rests only upon its desire to murder all Jews.

Willful nonsense like that is staggering.

The Times doesn’t even know its own business, writing thus about combat journalism -- “Normally, that wouldn’t be a life-threatening career.”

That statement is insane.

On page 48 of our book, we note that “as of last count, over the past year, more than 100 Western journalists have been killed covering the Middle East and parts nearby and afar.”

Then to the question as to whether this latest casualty was really a journalist. In Israel, there is doubt. He may well have been a member of Hamas.

The Israelis have begun an investigation to find the answer at this writing, but for editorialists at The New York Times that won’t be necessary. They already have all the answers.

IDF discovers and destroys cross-border Hamas terror tunnel - Nikki Guttman and AP

by Nikki Guttman and AP

Tunnel sealed with concrete to prevent future rehabilitation of infrastructure

Israeli military over the weekend

Israeli forces exposed and destroyed a Hamas-built terror tunnel over the weekend stretching across the Gaza border and several meters into Israeli territory, the IDF revealed Sunday.

The tunnel had been dug nearly as far as the Israeli community of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, near the border.

The tunnel was detected by advanced Israeli military technology. Upon its discovery, dozens of Israeli cement mixers were brought to the site to pour concrete into the tunnel and seal it.

According to the Israeli military, the method of pouring concrete into the tunnel prevents Hamas from rehabilitating the destroyed tunnel for future use, something is has attempted a number of times after Israel destroyed its tunnels by other means.

IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis summed up the event Sunday, saying that "we are nearing our objective of completely removing the tunnel threat by the end of 2018. This was the fifth terror tunnel discovered within Israeli territory in recent months."

Referring to the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas, during which Israel destroyed much of Hamas' extensive tunnel infrastructure, Manelis added that "The tunnel was dug from Jabaliya [in Gaza], and work on it began after [the 2014 war] Operation Protective Edge."

"We have been monitoring it for some time, and at no point did it pose any threat to the residents of Israel," he continued. "This was the first tunnel discovered in the northern arena since Operation Protective Edge. All the rest of the tunnels were in the southern arena."

The latest Hamas tunnel was connected to a network dug in the northern Gaza Strip. The tunnel was adjacent to the site of recent mass protests, which Israel says Hamas is using as a cover for attacks.

In two weeks of border protests, more than 30 Palestinians have been killed and at least 1,500 wounded by Israeli fire. The marches have been organized by Gaza's Hamas rulers.

"The fact that the tunnel was situated within the area of the border protests is exactly what we're dealing with," Manelis noted. "If the border fence is breached, it will not only be civilians who enter [Israel] but also terror operatives who will use infrastructure like this tunnel."

"The tunnel is long and well built," Manelis added. "It only proves how cynical Hamas is – investing in tunnels instead of [Gaza] residents. This is not the way to confront Gaza's problems."

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the tunnel destroyed over the weekend was the longest and deepest tunnel Israel has discovered thus far.

"It's a tunnel that cost millions of dollars to dig, money that instead of going to ease the hardship of Gaza's residents has sunk in the sand," he said. "Residents of Gaza: Hamas is burning your money on tunnels to nowhere."

"We are not looking to exacerbate tensions," the spokesman added. "We do not want the situation to deteriorate. We will not allow any violations of our sovereignty but at the same time we are making a lot efforts for the benefit of the [Gaza] population like increasing the fishing area and sending more trucks through the Kerem Shalom [border crossing]."

Hamas had no immediate comment.

Israel is now working on a subterranean barrier to detect and prevent attack tunnels. Israel says the barrier, as well as new technological innovations, have rendered the Hamas tunnel project futile.

So far, Israel has completed 9 kilometers of the underground barrier along the 65-kilometer border.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since 2008. During the most recent conflict in 2014, Israel destroyed 32 tunnels.

'Assad will pay if he gives Iran platform to attack Israel' - Hezki Baruch

by Hezki Baruch

Energy Minister speaks with Arutz Sheva about Iran's use of Syria as base for attacking Israel. 'This goes beyond chemical weapons issue.'

Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz spoke with Arutz Sheva about Iran’s use of Syria as a platform for attacking Israel.

While praising the strike by the US, Britain and France over the weekend against Syrian targets in response to the chemical weapons attack in Douma a week ago, Steinitz noted that Israel’s concern over Syria “goes beyond the chemical weapons issue.”

“The situation in Syria has been very grave for six or seven years now. Of course, the fact that that the US, together with Britain and France took action and signalled to the entire world that it’s unacceptable to use chemical weapons is important, but on the other hand, we have our own problem: We can’t allow Iran to transform Syria into an Iranian military base on our northern border. This goes beyond the chemical weapons issue.”

“Therefore, Israel will continue to carefully but precisely make sure that no new threats from Iran or other parties against Israel are taking place in Syria,” Steinitz concluded.

“If Assad allows foreign forces to turn his country into a platform to wage war against Israel, he may pay the price.”

Iran threatens to destroy Israel if it takes 'stupid measures' - Shlomo Cesana, Daniel Siryoti, News Agencies and Israel Hayom Staff

by Shlomo Cesana, Daniel Siryoti, News Agencies and Israel Hayom Staff

"If Israel wants to continue its treacherous existence, it should avoid stupid measures. If it gives Iran an excuse, Tel Aviv and Haifa will be destroyed," says Ali Shirazi, top adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

A senior Iranian official warned Israel on Thursday to avoid any "stupid measures" that may provoke Iran, a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran not to test Israeli resolve.
Iran's Fars news agency quoted Ali Shirazi, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's liaison to the Quds Force, as saying, "If Israel wants to continue its treacherous existence, it should avoid stupid measures. If it gives Iran an excuse, Tel Aviv and Haifa will be destroyed, razed to the ground."
The Quds Force is the elite division of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard Corps and is responsible for its overseas operations.
Shirazi's remarks came in response to comments made by Netanyahu in his speech at the Holocaust Remembrance Day state ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem on Wednesday evening.
"I have a message to convey to the rulers of Iran: Do not put our resolve to the test," Netanyahu said. "I also have a message for the Iranian people: Israel is not your enemy, but the despotic regime oppressing you is. When it is gone, both our ancient peoples will be able to live in cooperation and brotherhood."

YouTube
Ali Shirazi

Netanyahu has repeatedly stressed that Israel will not tolerate an Iranian military presence in Syria, especially along the border.
A senior Israeli official excoriated Iran over the statement, saying it proved that "Iran's aggression and its attempts to entrench itself militarily in Syria, from where it would be able to threaten Israel and other countries, is destabilizing the region."
On Tuesday, Ali Akbar Velayati, another top adviser to Khamenei, threatened Iranian retaliation over an alleged Israeli strike on the T4 air base near Homs, which took a serious toll on Iranian drone deployment in Syria.
Israel has not commented on the strike, but Syria, Russia and Iran have attributed it to the Israeli Air Force.
Velayati described the strike as "Israel's crime" and said it "will not remain without response."

Germany: Rappers with anti-Semitic lyrics given top music award - JTA

by JTA

German-Jewish leader condemns award to two popular rappers as a 'devastating' example of the normalcy of anti-Semitism in today’s society.

A German-Jewish leader condemned a music award given to two popular rappers as a “devastating” example of the normalcy of anti-Semitism in today’s society.

Kollegah and Bang won the top Echo Music Award in the hip-hop category for an album whose lyrics boast of physiques “more defined that those of Auschwitz inmates” and call for “another Holocaust; let’s grab the Molotov” cocktails.

Charlotte Knobloch, head of the Jewish community of Munich and Bavaria, was one of numerous public figures in Germany who criticized the award. The ceremony took place in Berlin on April 12, which also was the annual Holocaust and Ghetto Uprising Remembrance Day.

The album, whose title in English is “Young, Brutal, Good Looking 3,” won the best of Hip-Hop/Urban, National award.

Knobloch in a statement blasted the jury for promoting lyrics that evidence anti-Semitism and a lack of understanding of history.

“Anti-Jewish prejudices are not art,” she said, noting that the two rappers “reach millions of people, most of them young.”

In fact, the award was delivered with a verbal slap, which brought audience members to their feet.

Taking the stage before the presentation, another German pop star, Campino, of the punk rock band Die Toten Hosen (Dead Pants), said he likes provocation as much as the next guy. But “for me personally, misogynistic, homophobic, right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic insults cross the line” of acceptability. The audience gave Campino a standing ovation.

Organizers of the Echo Awards had cited “freedom of artistic expression” in defense of their decision to nominate the two. But they had been advised against the nomination, including by the Catholic Church delegates to the Echo Awards ethics board.

When Focus magazine asked the artists how they viewed the criticism, they responded by joking about their failure to work out before the ceremony.

In a televised commentary, Udo Grätz, deputy editor in chief of the WDR public broadcasting company, said he “couldn’t care less what a rapper like Kollegah thinks about Jews. But if hundreds of thousands of young people find his music cool, despite – or because of – the fact that it promotes anti-Semitic cliches, then I do have a problem.”

The Strategic Goals of a Restored Russia - Michel Gurfinkiel

by Michel Gurfinkiel

The Soviet “deep state” survived the disintegration of the Soviet Union. It is back with a vengeance.

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 796, April 15, 2018

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Soviet “deep state” survived the disintegration of the Soviet Union. It is back with a vengeance.

The Soviet Union was not vanquished by the West in the Cold War. It simply disintegrated in the late 1980s, the result of cumulative failures. A military defeat or a popular insurrection might have resulted in the elimination of its seventy-year-old totalitarian infrastructure and superstructure (the Soviet “deep state”). A mere collapse, however, had very different consequences.

Beyond the abandonment of the Eastern European glacis and the formal independence of the fifteen Soviet Republics, the ruling Soviet elite stayed largely in place. This was especially true in the very heart of the Empire, the former Federative Socialist Soviet Republic of Russia, rebranded as the Russian Federation. The army and secret police stayed intact, the planned economy was turned into a state-controlled oligarchy, and nationalism was substituted for communism. Soon, Russia began to engage in systematic rebuilding and reconquest.

This process started under Boris Yeltsin, the allegedly liberal first president of post-Soviet Russia. Just a few weeks after the USSR’s dismantlement, Yeltsin’s army seized Transnistria as a Russian outpost between the now formally independent former Soviet Republics of Ukraine and Moldavia. It was the Yeltsin bureaucracy in the early 1990s that issued 1) the Near Abroad doctrine, according to which Russia retained “vital interests” in neighboring post-Soviet countries; and 2) the parallel doctrine of  “the Russian World”, which envisioned the “reunification” of all Russian-speaking communities into a single nation-state.

Vladimir Putin, who was chief of the secret police in 1998, became prime minister in 1999 and then Yeltsin’s successor in 2000.

The primary strategic goal of a restored Russia is to bring together all the Russian-speaking peoples into a single nation-state. In 2014, after the forced incorporation into Russia of Crimea, a province of Ukraine under international law, Putin elaborated that, after the dissolution of the USSR, “millions of people went to bed in one country and awoke in different ones, overnight becoming ethnic minorities in former Union republics, while the Russian nation became one of the biggest, if not the biggest ethnic group in the world to be divided by borders.” What is at stake is not just Transnistria or Crimea or eastern Ukraine, but the Russian-speaking communities in the Baltic States and in Central Asia. This contention resembles that of Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1939, when he carved an ethnically defined Greater Germany into the heart of Europe.

A second Russian goal is to reestablish the former Soviet Union as a single geopolitical unit if not a single state: a “Eurasian community” with Russia as first among equals. This goal has been largely achieved. Most post-Soviet countries, with the glaring exceptions of the Baltic states, which joined both NATO and the EU, and of Ukraine, which strives to do the same, have reverted into a Russian sphere of influence. The only countervailing power so far, at least in Central Asia, has been China.

A third Russian goal is to weaken or eliminate any rival power in Europe: be it the US and NATO, its military arm, or the EU, at least as long as it has close ties with the US. A fourth is to resume a world power role by reactivating support for former Soviet client regimes like Baathist Syria or Cuba, or striking new strategic alliances with emerging powers like Iran.

Sadly, most Western countries either failed to understand what was going on or decided to ignore it, even in the face of hard evidence. In his recently published book, The End of Europe, James Kirchick writes:  “As early as 1987,” when the Soviet Union still existed, “Mikhaïl Gorbachev advocated Soviet entry into what he called ‘the common European home’.” Ten years later, after the demise of the Soviet Union, “Boris Yeltsin hoped that Russia would one day join ‘greater Europe’.” In both cases, Western politicians and strategists responded enthusiastically: many insisted that “a whole raft of institutions, strategic theorems and intellectual currents born out of the struggle against Soviet communism” were now passé, and “it was time to supplant the bipolar order with more inclusive and ‘equitable’ arrangements.”

Seven years later, in 2005, the Gaullist president of France, Jacques Chirac, and the social-democratic Chancellor of Germany, Gerhard Schröder, planned for “a European Security and Defense Union,” a “triangular” military alliance with Russia “that would exclude Washington, to parallel and perhaps one day replace NATO.” It did not appear to concern these analysts that “as the West slashed defense budgets and relocated resources to Asia and the Middle East,” Russia was undergoing “a massive conventional arms buildup to the point there exists now a perilous imbalance on NATO’s Eastern flank.”

Even more intriguing was the attitude of Barack Obama’s administration from 2009 to 2017. It did not do much to deter Russian inroads into the Caucasus and Ukraine, and opted from 2015 on for complete passivity in the Middle East and even active cooperation with Iran, the new Russian protégé.

Much was achieved, in this respect, by soft power. The old Soviet Union cultivated all kinds of networks in order to spy on foreign countries, or to influence them: from communist parties to front communist organizations, from fellow travelers to peace activists, from businessmen or companies interested in East-West trade to illiberal right-wingers. These networks accounted for perhaps one-half of Soviet global power. As Cold Warriors used to say, “East minus West equals zero”. Putin’s Russia is resorting to the same means and could have equal or perhaps even greater success.

Sweden's War on Free Speech - Judith Bergman

by Judith Bergman

Instead of using its limited resources to protect its citizens from the violent onslaught against them, Sweden is waging a legal war on its pensioners for daring to speak out against the same violent onslaught from which the state is failing to protect them.

  • Apparently, turning in fellow Swedes to the authorities for alleged "hate speech" is now viewed in Sweden as "heroic".
  • "One can criticize fascism or Nazism, but why not Islam? Why should Islam have any protection status?" — Denny, a 71-year-old pensioner, on trial for "incitement to hatred".
  • Instead of using its limited resources to protect its citizens from the violent onslaught against them, Sweden is waging a legal war on its pensioners for daring to speak out against the same violent onslaught from which the state is failing to protect them.
According to the Swedish mainstream media, the country has experienced a significant rise in prosecutions for "hate speech" on social media last year. The organization believed to be largely responsible for this rise is "Näthatsgranskaren" ("The Web Hate Investigator"), a private organization founded in January 2017 by a former police officer, Tomas Åberg, who has taken it upon himself to identify and report to the authorities Swedish individuals whom he and his organization decide are committing thought crimes and "inciting hatred" against foreigners.

Åberg's organization reported no fewer than 750 Swedish citizens in 2017 to the authorities for "web hate". According to Aftonbladet, 14% of the reported cases went on to prosecution of which about 7% -- 77 cases -- led to actual convictions. Most of the people identified and reported by the organization were middle aged and elderly ladies. "The average age is around 55 years", said Åberg, "Young women almost do not appear at all".

According to Aftonbladet, "In his work, Tomas Åberg sees how quickly people are radicalized on the internet and he thinks it's scary. It may begin with statements against foreigners that are within the framework of the law, only to end with serious criminal hatred". ("Hate" is actually not a crime, according to Swedish law; "incitement to hate" is). [1]

Åberg founded the organization with a friend, because, he said, he did not think that "serious internet crimes" were being taken seriously enough in Sweden. "We created our own search application, which finds words and phrases that might be suspected of constituting incitement against ethnic groups and unlawful threats".

At present, the organization consists of 15 people, including police officers, system developers, lecturers, lawyers and social workers, all of whom are anonymous. The organization refuses to identify the people working for it.

Åberg was recently nominated for a prestigious prize, the "Swedish Hero" award, by one of Sweden's largest newspapers, Aftonbladet. Since 2007, the newspaper has awarded the "Swedish Hero" prize every year "to everyday heroes who have shown bravery, civil courage and human compassion". Apparently, turning in fellow Swedes to the authorities for alleged "hate speech" is now viewed in Sweden as "heroic".

Shortly after Tomas Åberg's nomination to the "Swedish Hero" award, however, his name reportedly disappeared from the list of nominees with no explanation offered by Aftonbladet. Åberg, it turned out, who used to own an animal farm, had apparently starved his oxen to death in 2013. After he was reported to the police for the animal abuse, he reportedly changed his name, fled abroad to escape justice, and returned to Sweden only as the statute of limitations on his crime was expiring.

Notably in Sweden, while it is not seen as "compassionate" or "heroic" to starve animals to death, it is viewed as 'heroic' to report elderly citizens to the police for them to be prosecuted and have their lives potentially ruined for voicing their opinions on social media.

Not only does the mainstream media view reporting thought crimes to the media as "heroic"; the Swedish state actively supports it. Åberg's organization received 600,000 Swedish kroner ($73,000) from the Swedish government. This support was motivated by referencing "activities against racism and intolerance".

It is curious that the Swedish state can afford to give more than half a million Swedish kroner away to a private vigilante organization, run by a seemingly shady figure, at a time when the Swedish police are starved for resources and barely have time to investigate the very crimes, including horrific gang rapes, which are causing these 'hateful' social media posts to begin with.

One of the elderly women, whose life Åberg has disrupted and possibly ruined, is a 73-year old woman with no criminal record, who shared an old text from 2015, widely available on the internet and written by someone else, in a small Facebook group of barely 50 people. She has been charged with "incitement against an ethnic group" for sharing the following:
"A biological sensation in Sweden. A new bird species (parasitus muslimus) has established itself here... In recent years, the Arab bird (parasitus muslimus) has been widely spread in northern Europe, largely because it lacks natural enemies here...The female has a comprehensive feather shield, where only the eyes are visible... The male usually has four females... The species is a migratory bird but with the weird feature that they never move back..."
Another woman, 75, was charged with "inciting hatred against an ethnic group" after writing the following about marriage among Muslims on Facebook in May 2017:
"The right to our bodies? Wonder what they mean by that? They say they are not allowed to choose the husband themselves. It must be a cousin, uncle... or maybe a grandfather. Probably they are completely IQ-liberated because inbreeding among Muslims has been going on for thousands of years. "
Yet another woman, Christina, 65, was charged with "inciting hatred against an ethnic group" for writing on Facebook: "If this continues, the intelligence in Sweden will be at goldfish level" and "Refuse all that has to do with Islam". She denies having written those statements but insists that she wishes to warn Swedes against Islam. According to news reports, in 2016 Christina was assaulted by four so-called "unaccompanied minors" (migrants) and knocked unconscious, an act that has impaired her memory. No one was sentenced for that assault, but she now faces financial difficulties and cannot pay her rent. She receives no help from the Swedish state. So far, Christina has reportedly been interrogated six times, for up to two hours each, for her alleged thought crimes, asked about her childhood, and whether she was doing drugs. She has no criminal record.

"It's terrible to feel like a dangerous criminal because you write the truth about what's happening in our society, while rape is high and criminals go free," she told Samtiden. It was someone from Näthatsgranskaren who reported her to the police. She risks being fined or possibly going to jail.

Denny, a 71-year-old pensioner, is currently on trial for "incitement to hatred" for having asked, "One can criticize fascism or Nazism, but why not Islam? Why should Islam have any protection status?"

A 64-year old man was reported to the police by Näthatsgranskaren for encouraging Swedes to learn self-defense. He is now being charged with "incitement to hatred against an ethnic group" for writing on Facebook:
"Before it's too late, I suggest that anyone... who is able to manage to defend this country, joins the shooting clubs, self-defense clubs, karate clubs or anything... Everything is allowed for a Muslim as long as he harasses 'infidels'... a Muslim feels as bad about chopping off a human head as we do about opening a can of sardines".
During interrogations, he reportedly said that he has no intention of hurting anyone and that his post was merely about self-defense. The police questioned him about whether he has anything against Muslims: "I have nothing against Muslims...," he said. "That is not what this is about. It is about Islam and the Koran that does not have the same values as us... It says in the Koran that all infidels must be killed..." He asked the police to deal with imams who preach hatred in the mosques instead.

Even before Åberg's organization came into the picture, Sweden was prosecuting Swedes for "incitement to hate" as if the future of the Swedish state depended on it. Here are a few recent cases:

A 71-year-old woman referred to so-called unaccompanied minors as "bearded children" and said that they are "engaged in rape and demolishing their [asylum] homes". She posted the comment on the Facebook page of the Sweden Democrats in June 2016. In February 2018, a Swedish court sentenced her to a fine for "incitement of hatred against an ethnic group".

During her trial, she said that she had been reading several articles about these purported unaccompanied refugees who "burned down asylum housing and raped and then refused to have their age medically determined in order to escape sentencing".

"It made me terrified," she said, apologizing for her post, which she said was aimed solely at those who commit crimes. The court evidently did not care about the elderly woman's fear, and concluded:
"...the [woman] must have realized that there was an imminent risk that people who read the text would perceive it as an expression of disagreement with other ethnic groups of people in general and the vast majority of single unaccompanied refugees, who, at the time of the comment, had come to Sweden in particular. Despite this, she wrote the comment on Facebook." the co.
A woman in her fifties was sentenced to a fine in December 2017 for a post on Facebook, in which she called men from Afghanistan, who had lied about their age, "camel riders": "These damn camel riders will never be self-sufficient, because they are damn parasites," she wrote. Prosecutor Mattias Glaser emphasized that the post was directed against "young men struggling to stay in the country". According to the court:
"... condescending words were used in a manner that... expressed contempt for people of Afghan origin or people from neighboring areas with respect to skin color and national or ethnic origin in a manner which fits the provision about incitement to hatred".
In November 2017, a 65-year old man was sentenced to a fine for "incitement of hatred against an ethnic group". His crime? Writing on Facebook that, "newly arrived" migrants, not Swedes, were guilty of committing gang rapes. According to the court, the man "claimed that Afghans, Africans and Arabs who have newly arrived in Sweden commit crimes such as gang rapes". This claim, according to the court, constitutes, "clear contempt" for people of the mentioned national origins. The 65-year old man argued that he published the comment because Sweden withholds statistics about the ethnic origins of rapists and that his comment was a way to spread information and start a debate. This made no impression on the court, which concluded: "The post contains a serious accusation that people of certain national origins commit serious crimes and it [the post] cannot as such be considered to arouse or contribute to an objective discussion on the subject."

In February, a 55-year old man was sentenced to a fine for, "incitement against an ethnic group" for writing on Facebook that Sunni Muslims are behind most of the gang crime in Sweden, as well as rapes. "Somalis are Sunni Muslims... they are behind much of the gang crime in Sweden and all the other violence, such as rapes. Afghans are 80% Sunni and they are a damned people!" he wrote.

During the trial, he said he was under the impression that there was freedom of speech in Sweden. "You see this stuff everyday", he said; "gang rapes, shootings, animal abuse and the like and the politicians do not seem able to do anything about it. The police do not do anything either and people get angry". The court concluded:
"... the post expresses that Muslims in general are behind gang crime and rapes in Sweden and is formulated in an offensive manner... the post does not invite a critical discussion about religion, it expresses the exact kind of contempt that the provision about incitement against an ethnic group is aimed at. The defendant is sentenced to 10,000 kroner [$1,200] for incitement against an ethnic group".
The list goes on....

Sweden is being swept by a strong wave of murder, violent assault, rape, gang rape and sexual assault, in addition to the ever-present terror threat. Instead of using its limited resources to protect its citizens from the violent onslaught against them, Sweden is waging a legal war on its pensioners for daring to speak out against the same violent onslaught from which the state is failing to protect them.

[1] Brottsbalken chapter 16, § 8,1 st, explicitly talks of "incitement" (Swedish: "hets mot folkgrupp") against groups of people defined by their "race, skin color, national or ethnic origin, faith or sexual preference". However, the provision does not criminalize criticism of religion, ideology or ideas.
