Israel’s survival does not just depend on her military might. There are many ways terrorism can win against her.
The relentless assault against Israel and Jews is not only a physical threat, but one that has left Israelis frightened and traumatized as their lives are disrupted in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. See here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
There are daily sirens that warn of incoming missiles. “Red alert!” Running for shelter.
In addition to the endless barrage of rockets fired at southern Israel, this week Hamas shot rockets that struck Tel Aviv as rockets were also fired from Lebanon striking northern Israel. Four-year-old Daniel Tragerman was killed by rocket fire that originated from an UNWRA school.
What other country in the world has had to invest billions and billions of dollars on bomb shelters placed along or under the street, against apartment buildings, in playgrounds?
Imagine having 15 seconds (in many cases even less) to run to a shelter. Did you know that even the fastest runner in the world cannot run 200 meters in 15 seconds?
And that’s assuming there is a shelter close by. There are many buildings and locations that don’t have bomb shelters. In that case, when the siren goes off, people dive to the ground, face down, and cover their heads. Or crouch against a car. Or a low wall. Or any solid surface they can find. And pray the rocket doesn’t hit them.
And what of people who can’t make it to a shelter or any place of relative refuge due to physical disability or age?
Consider that when the siren goes off people are in the middle of going about their day. Perhaps a mother is changing her baby’s diaper. Or someone is cooking a meal on the stove. Or taking a shower. Maybe you’re in the middle of an important meeting at work. Or out for a walk in a meadow. Perhaps you’re driving on a busy street. Or you and your family are spending a day at the beach.
Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you must always be vigilant about where you can take cover. And when that siren goes off, you must immediately stop, drop everything, and run as fast as you can. Though a field. Or down flights of stairs. Or across a street.
You must fly across the grass or sidewalk or sand. You must abandon your car, the food cooking on the stove. You must run for your life, heart pounding, feet moving quickly, quickly, quickly.
Imagine this happening throughout the day. And imagine not knowing where the rockets will hit. Because the Iron Dome does not intercept every rocket. Not nearly.
So if you get away with your life, you may return home only to find it destroyed.
And imagine that when there is no siren, your body and your psyche begin to anticipate it as your nerves become frayed and life is disrupted time and time again.
Israelis living in southern Israel have been the most exposed to attack as they live on the border with Gaza. But as rockets reach farther and farther into Israel, no city or town is safe. All of Israel is vulnerable to attack. If not from Hamas, then from Hezb’allah. If not from Hezb’allah then from Iran. If not from Iran, then soon from ISIS.
Israel is a strong country. But there is only so much a people can take before society is affected on a massive scale, assuming the nation is not destroyed.
The threats Israel faces are massive and on multiple fronts. We must stand with her in any and all ways. Please make your voice heard. She is fighting our fight. Her future is our future.
