"Israel is not interested in initiating a military campaign in Gaza, but we have no intention of accepting sporadic rocket fire. I advise Hamas to act responsibly," defense minister says • Hamas official: Group won't tolerate "criminal attacks" in Gaza.
"Israel will not tolerate sporadic rocket fire
and will respond to any attack," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said
Monday, following an Israeli Air Force strike on Hamas targets in the
Gaza Strip.
Israeli aircraft struck terror targets in the
enclave on Monday afternoon, following a rocket attack on southern
Israel, during which a projectile fired from northern Gaza exploded in
an open area in Shaar Hanegev Regional Council, causing no harm.
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman stressed
Monday that "Israel is not interested in initiating a military campaign
in Gaza, but we have no intention of accepting sporadic rocket fire. I
advise Hamas to act responsibly and calm down."
Shaar Hanegev Regional head Alon Shuster said the resident "are not going to let rocket fire disrupt their life."
Coordinator of Government Activities in the
Territories Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai posted a message in Arabic on his
office's website, writing, "Undermining the peace will push Israel to
mount a forceful response. Any attempt to use the [terror] tunnels will
bring about the demise of those who are in them."
Palestinian media reported that the rocket
fire was the work of rogue Salafist terrorist groups, which are trying
to provoke escalation despite Hamas' orders.
Nevertheless, a Hamas official said, "No matter the price, we will not tolerate these criminal attacks on Hamas bases in Gaza."
