Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Gallant (Kulanu) on Tuesday advocated assassinating Syrian President Bashar Assad.
"In Syria, people are being executed, they are
being deliberately targeted with chemical weapons and now, in the
latest escalation, their bodies are being burned -- something we haven't
seen in the world for 70 years," Gallant, a former GOC Southern
Command, said at the Second International Ground Warfare and Logistics
Conference in Latrun, near Jerusalem.
"In my view, we are crossing a red line, and
as far as I'm concerned the time has come to get rid of Assad,
literally, with all this implies," he said.
"And when we finish with the snake's tail we
can focus on its head in Tehran, and take care of that too. The State of
Israel knows how to defend itself by itself, but we must always keep in
mind that we have friends and allies and it is important to cultivate
our relations with them.
"If 75 years ago we had had the military power
that we have today, history would have unfolded differently. The
despicable murderers and leaders seeking Israel's destruction, such as
Assad and his masters in Tehran, no longer have the right to exist. The
world needs to banish the Shiite monster back to where it belongs."
Meanwhile, the Syrian government on Tuesday
denied allegations by the U.S. State Department that bodies were being
burned in the Saydnaya military prison, north of the capital Damascus.
The regime labeled the accusations as "lies" and "fabrications."
The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a
statement that the U.S. administration had conjured up a "new Hollywood
plot detached from reality," which resembled "a broken record" regarding
the use of chemical weapons.
Stuart Jones, the acting assistant secretary
for Near Eastern Affairs in the State Department, said on Monday that
the Syrian regime had "authorized the extrajudicial killings of
thousands of detainees using mass hangings at the Saydnaya military
prison. Saydnaya is but one of many detention facilities where prisoners
are being held and abused. Others include the Mezzeh airport detention
facility and Military Security Branches 215, 227, 235, 248 and 291,
which are all located throughout Syria."
Jones continued, "Credible sources have
believed that many of the bodies have been disposed in mass graves. We
now believe that the Syrian regime has installed a crematorium in the
Saydnaya prison complex which could dispose of detainees' remains with
little evidence. These atrocities have been carried out seemingly with
the unconditional support from Russia and Iran."
