The David Horowitz Freedom Center is elated to announce the appointment of DePaul Professor Jason Hill to its roster of Shillman Journalism Fellows.

The Shillman Fellows in Journalism program, endowed by philanthropist and entrepreneur Dr. Robert Shillman, has expanded and deepened the coverage of current events by the Freedom Center’s flagship publication, Frontpage Magazine.  Among the current Shillman Fellows are Daniel Greenfield, Robert Spencer, Professor Bruce Thornton, and writer Michael Ledeen.

Dr. Jason Hill, a Jamaican immigrant, is a tenured Professor of Philosophy at DePaul University in Chicago.  He also serves as President and CEO of the Institute for Immigrant Assimilation. He has lectured and taught on the principles of moral philosophy at universities across the globe. A specialist in ethics and American Politics, Dr. Hill has been published in major magazines and journals including The Federalist and Commentary Magazine and has appeared on a diverse array of media outlets including NBC’s Today show, Fox News, NPR, and NRATV among others.

While many academics shy away from political controversy, Professor Hill has been an unapologetic critic of the left on campus and an equally unapologetic advocate for America. He has written of the United States as “a place of universal belonging” and “a prototype of what a benevolent universe looks like” while chastising our nation’s universities for promoting “Americaphobia.” Hill has written:  “I came to understand as an academic philosopher that it was in our institutions of higher learning, our universities, that the real destruction of America was taking place.”

Dr. Hill’s public defense of Israel has been equally vigorous.  In an article in The Federalist, Dr. Hill proclaimed that Israel has the “moral right to annex all of the West Bank” and argued that “There can be no such thing as legitimate ‘Palestinian Territory’ in a geographic region legally seized in a defensive war instigated by a foreign aggressor.”

The anti-Semitic left at DePaul seized on these statements and launched a petition demanding that the University “censure Professor Hill for his heinous statements against marginalized communities” which “create unsafe and uncomfortable spaces for everyone.”

Questioned about the incident by a journalist, Hill asserted, “I think we live in an age where there is an abysmal lack of intellectual and moral leadership. I take myself to be such a leader, and I have no intentions of issuing any apologies. I've spoken what I believe to be the truth, and I stand firm in what I believe in.”

Dr. Hill’s personal history also stands as a rebuke of the campus left. At the age of 20, he immigrated to America from his native Jamaica with only $120 to his name. Thirteen years later, he received his Ph.D. from Purdue University and was teaching at his present academic home, DePaul, just two years after that.  Black and gay, in addition to being patriotic, Dr. Hill defies chic politically correct notions of “intersectional” oppression.

Hill is the author of several books including We Have Overcome: An Immigrant’s Letter to the American People which has been described as “the most important and provocative book about race relations to be published in this century.” His other works include Civil Disobedience and the Politics of Identity: When We Should Not Get Along and Beyond Blood Identities: Posthumanity in the Twenty-First Century.   His weekly columns on Frontpage will begin in the coming days.
