Four east Jerusalem residents indicted for trying to join Islamic State group in Syria • Cell allegedly planned to carry out attacks near foreign embassies and consulates in Jerusalem • One cell member flew to Turkey with goal of entering Syria.
Four east Jerusalem residents between the ages
of 20 and 25 were indicted on Friday for attempting to join the Islamic
State group in Syria.
The four formed a study group and met several times a week to learn Islamic State ideology and watch Islamic State videos.
The cell allegedly planned to carry out
terrorist attacks near foreign embassies and consulates in Jerusalem.
They gathered funds for this purpose and attempted to contact Islamic
State members in Syria for guidance and support.
Last August, one of the cell members flew to
Turkey with the goal of crossing into to Syria to join the fighting
there. However, a local smuggler requested $2,000 to smuggle him over
the border. The cell member did not have that much money and decided to
return to Israel.
Another cell member managed to collect $3,200
and booked an airline ticket to Turkey, but his father found out about
his plans and prevented him from going through with them.
The indictment was filed at the Jerusalem Magistrates'
Court and includes charges of attempted membership and activity in an
illegal organization, attempting to join a terrorist organization,
supporting a terrorist organization and attempting to leave the country
unlawfully.
