Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Yair Golan says Shiite terrorist group has developed capabilities that pose an "unprecedented" threat to Israel, warns against provocations on the Israel-Lebanon border • Future conflict will be a "full-scale war," he says.
A top Israeli military official on Wednesday
issued a stern warning to Hezbollah, saying any future conflict between
the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah may unleash "devastating damage"
on Lebanon.
Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Yair Golan
told foreign journalists that Hezbollah has developed capabilities that
present "unprecedented" threats to Israel, saying Israeli intelligence
estimates the Shiite terrorist group has over 100,000 rockets and
missiles in its arsenal, and that its improved missile arsenal is now
capable of striking virtually anywhere in the country.
Golan said any future war will be "much harsher" than anything experienced in the past 20 years.
Golan said, "In any future crisis, they are
not going to see a small war in Lebanon. It's going to be decisive. It's
going to be full-scale war that could create devastating damage to
Lebanon," including in civilian areas, where he said Hezbollah hides and
operates.
"There is no other way to take out this threat
without ... creating large damage to the Lebanese infrastructure, to
Lebanese houses and other civilian facilities," he said.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in the
summer of 2006. Some 160 Israelis were killed in the conflict, while the
Lebanese death toll came to about 1,200, including hundreds of
civilians. Hezbollah fired several thousand rockets at Israel, and
Israeli airstrikes caused heavy damage to Lebanon's infrastructure.
