International Criminal Police Organization's rejection of the Palestinian attempt to join its ranks is "an important achievement," says Foreign Ministry • PM Netanyahu: Israel is breaking through to the international sphere, fight will continue at U.N.
Israel lauded Interpol's decision on Tuesday
to reject a bid by the Palestinian Authority to join its ranks,
commending the France-based International Criminal Police Organization
for not allowing the Palestinians to politicize it.
Interpol comprises 190 member states, making
it the second largest international organization after the United
Nations. The Palestinian membership petition was discussed during the
organization's 85th general assembly in Indonesia, where 62 delegates
voted against the Palestinian bid, 56 voted in favor, and 37 abstained.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the decision, attributing it to Israel's considerable public diplomacy efforts.
"This morning we thwarted a Palestinian attempt to join Interpol," Netanyahu said in a short statement released Tuesday.
"This was made possible thanks to the efforts
of the Foreign Ministry and National Security Council, and they have my
gratitude. Our fight will continue at the U.N. Security Council as well.
Israel is breaking through to the international sphere and this will
show in all U.N. bodies and international organizations."
A statement by the Foreign Ministry said the
ministry and the Israel Police "worked under the guidance of Prime
Minister Netanyahu to foil the Palestinian move. This vote is an
important achievement. It reflects the change in Israel's status and the
success marked by Israeli public diplomacy."
