America voted for national sovereignty and the rule of law - Ben Cohen

by Ben Cohen

When policymakers accept illegal immigration as the new normal, they forfeit a core element of their nation's sovereignty, the right to decide who becomes a citizen.

On Tuesday night, Donald Trump shocked the political world. He beat the polls; he beat the pundits, and he won the presidency.

From the beginning, Donald Trump placed immigration at the center of his campaign. He defeated a deep and talented field to capture the Republican nomination and won the White House on the strength of his message.

Make no mistake, the American people voted for national sovereignty and the rule of law.

When policymakers accept illegal immigration as the new normal, they forfeit a core element of their nation's sovereignty, the right to decide who becomes a citizen. Our policy elites had in effect said, “America no longer has a right to determine its immigration policy; if you sneak in, or you overstay your visa, you will eventually be amnestied.”

The American people, including roughly 30% of Hispanic voters, rejected that.

Hopefully, our friends across the aisle will start to treat illegal immigration with the seriousness it deserves. Hopefully, they will recognize that America, like every other sovereign nation, has a right and a duty to control its borders. And hopefully, they will recognize that there is nothing racist about borders and the rule of law.
