The officials wrote in the letter that the mail system issues were “not one-off mistakes or a problem with specific facilities. Instead, it demonstrates a pervasive lack of understanding and enforcement of USPS policies among its employees.”
Two groups representing top election administrators in all 50 states warned that widespread issues with the U.S. Postal Service could disrupt voting in the 2024 general election.
According to the letter sent to U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Wednesday, valid ballots postmarked on time have been received after the deadline to be counted and the issue hasn't been corrected.
The officials also noted that there have been cases of election mail with valid addresses being returned as undeliverable.
“We have not seen improvement or concerted efforts to remediate our concerns,” the National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors wrote.
