The director general of British domestic
security service MI5 warned Thursday that the Islamic State group is
planning a massive attack in Britain.
Andrew Parker said there is no indication that
British-born Islamists are toning down their aim to launch a jihad on
British soil.
"The current threat level is the highest I
have witnessed in the course of my 32-year career," Parker said in a
speech he gave in London.
His remarks come just days before the British
Parliament is due to debate the controversial Investigatory Powers Bill,
known as the "Snoopers' Charter," which would allow security services
to monitor online communications.
Parker said his intelligence service would not
be able to protect Britain unless it had permission to intercept
communication data. He said that in the past year MI5 had thwarted six
terror attacks in the U.K. and seven outside its borders.
Today, 80% of MI5's resources are allocated to
the war on terror, most of which stems from Islamic State. Parker said
he believes the West should collaborate with Russian President Vladimir
Putin to defeat the group.
