The man has been identified by media reports as Ali Sonboly. Sonboly was of Iranian origin, though born and raised in Germany, and had dual citizenship.
He started the shooting spree at a Mcdonalds at around 5:50 pm, and then moved across the street to the "Olympia" shopping center, where most of the victims were found.
German authorities said today (Saturday) that a search of Sonboly's house and computer turned up no ties to Jihadi or terrorist groups, and no evidence of Jihadist motives. The investigation is ongoing, but detectives did find evidence of "preoccupation with violence" and mass shootings.
Police are also investigating reports that the shooter had hacked a Facebook account and offered Mcdonald's food at especially low prices in order to lure as many people as possible to the Mcdonald's branch where he first started shooting.
