Arab media says an Israeli airstrike hit an arms convoy heading to Shiite group's bases in Lebanon, as well as a military base near Damascus • Syria's state TV says airstrike came from Lebanese airspace • Report not corroborated by any Israeli source.
Arab media alleged Wednesday that the Israeli
Air Force struck several targets near Damascus, Syria. The report has
not been corroborated by any official Israeli source.
The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said
that the airstrike was mounted from Lebanese airspace on the Sabboura
area, west of Damascus, saying no injuries were reported.
The report made no mention of the targets, and
quoted an unnamed military source as saying the airstrike was "an
attempt to divert attention away from the successes of the Syrian Arab
Army."
The London-based Arabic newspaper Rai al-Youm
reported that Israeli fighter jets bombed a Hezbollah-bound weapons
convoy, as well as a military base near the Syrian capital.
The base struck houses the Syrian military's
4th Division, the report said, adding the Israeli aircraft fired four
missiles at their target.
Other media outlets hedged the strike on the
arms convoy, making its way from the Damascus airport toward Beirut,
Lebanon, did not target any specific Syrian or Hezbollah official, and
sought only to thwart the delivery of weapons to the Shiite group.
Several Syrian websites said the convoy was completely
engulfed in flames, while others quoted Damascus residents as saying
they could hear loud explosions across the city around 2 a.m.
