Governor says prosecutor also indicated intent to ignore abortion laws.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced the suspension of a Hillsborough County state attorney linked to liberal donor George Soros, arguing the official had indicated his intent to not enforce state laws related to abortion and child transgender surgery.
DeSantis said state attorney Andrew Warren would be suspended immediately and potentially removed from office in the near future over his stated intention to ignore laws passed by the state.
In June of last year, Warren "signed a letter saying that he would not enforce any prohibitions on sex change operations for minors," DeSantis said during the press conference; elsewhere, Warren also "signed a letter saying he would not enforce ANY laws relating to protecting the right to life in the state of Florida," the governor added.
"State Attorneys have a duty to prosecute crimes as defined in Florida law, not to pick and choose which laws to enforce based on his personal agenda,” DeSantis said in a press release. “It is my duty to hold Florida’s elected officials to the highest standards for the people of Florida."
The governor's office said that Hillsborough County Court Judge Susan Lopez would take over Warren's position for the duration of the suspension.
Like many progressive prosecutors around the country, Warren has been linked to funds from the hard-left mega-donor George Soros.
A New York Times report from 2017 claimed that Warren's campaign was "funded by the billionare George Soros," while Warren told the Tamp Bay Times in 2020 that he believed Soros had helped fund his campaign.
"We understand that he gave money to the state (Democratic) party. And the state party money ... went to support different candidates," Warren told the paper.
