The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is America’s largest and most influential activist organization representing the interests of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. HRC has been around since 1980. It started out with a declared purpose “to advance the cause of lesbian and gay civil rights by supporting and educating candidates for federal elective office.” Over the years, however, HRC has turned into a left-wing high-pressure group seeking to impose transgender activists’ most extreme demands for fundamental changes in America’s institutions and societal norms on the rest of us.

For the first time in the Human Rights Campaign’s forty-year history, HRC’s president, Kelley Robinson, decided that now is the right time to proclaim that “LGBTQ+ Americans are living in a state of emergency.”

HRC did not declare an emergency during the years when lesbians, gay men, and bisexual individuals could not serve openly in the military or before same-sex marriage was legally recognized in the United States. HRC waited until 2023 to do so, ignoring all the progress that homosexual individuals have made in securing broad acceptance and rights during the forty-year period of HRC’s existence.

Why now? Because pro-trans activists and their supporters are growing impatient with the pace at which America is changing to fully accommodate the less than one percent of the U.S. population who consider themselves to be transgender individuals.

“Everyone has challenges that we are wrestling through, but when I look at the impact on trans people, particularly Black trans women, it is clear that we need an intentional effort to center them,” HRC’s president Kelley Robinson said.

Thus, the Human Rights Campaign has launched a jihad against what it calls the “anti-LGBTQ+ Republican establishment” and its conservative supporters who have pushed for legislation in red states that HRC considers to be transphobic.

HRC is upset about legislation that protects impressionable children from age-inappropriate gender identity and sexual orientation instruction in school. HRC vehemently opposes legislation that ensures fair competition in girls’ and women’s sports by limiting participation to biological females. Moreover, HRC condemns legislation that bans or limits subjecting minors to harmful, potentially irreversible medical procedures aimed at conforming their young bodies to the gender they currently believe they identify with as opposed to their biological sex at birth.

The Human Rights Campaign also has problems with laws enacted in Florida and other conservative states that would prohibit schools from keeping parents in the dark about a change in their child’s gender identification in the classroom. Such laws uphold what the Supreme Court has described as “the interest of parents in the care, custody, and control of their children…perhaps the oldest of the fundamental liberty interests recognized by this Court.”

HRC wants woke schools to stand between parents and the parents’ children who may be confused about their self-identity and to take away control of these children from their own parents.

President Biden strongly supports the transgender community on these issues. The Human Rights Campaign lavished President Biden with praise for his pro-trans stance and for the initiatives he announced just recently to further their cause.

At this year’s Pride celebration at the White House, the president once again lashed out against laws he considers to be anti-trans, mentioning specifically “laws introduced in states targeting transgender children,” for example. President Biden has this backwards. The laws he is criticizing that ban or limit so-called “gender-affirming” medical care for children who think they are transgender are not targeted against these children. To the contrary, these laws are meant to protect vulnerable children from the health “experts,” practitioners, and clinics who profit from pushing minors confused about their gender identity to undergo drastic chemical and surgical procedures.

President Biden unwittingly said one thing during his Pride celebration remarks that made the case for laws requiring schools to promptly notify parents, and even obtain their consent, before “affirming” their children’s desired gender identity in the classroom. The president said that “the most basic values and freedoms we have as Americans” include “the right to raise your own children.” That is precisely what these parental rights laws do. They put the parents in charge of raising their own children.

While HRC is delighted with the Biden administration’s support for its agenda, it is working hard to elect pro-LGBTQ+ political candidates at all levels of government. It actively lobbies to advance its progressive left-wing agenda. And HRC is engaging in a full-court press on businesses and other entities in the private sector to embrace the pro-trans agenda.

The Human Rights Campaign, according to Influence Watch, “has leveraged its position as the largest advocate for LGBT interests to pressure major corporations, law firms, hospitals, and local governments into implementing and expanding socially liberal policies, supporting Human Rights Campaign financially, and withdrawing support from conservative and religious organizations through implicit threats of low scores on its Corporate Equality Index, Healthcare Equality Index and Municipal Equality Index ‘scorecards.’”

The Human Rights Campaign’s affiliated foundation describes its Corporate Equality Index (CEI) as “the national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees.” For a corporation to reach a perfect score of one hundred, it must satisfy a detailed set of CEI criteria, including compliance with what the Human Rights Campaign Foundation calls “Transgender Inclusion Best Practices.” Points are deducted for what HRC considers to be “a large-scale official or public anti-LGBTQ blemish on their recent records.”

With some major pension and mutual funds choosing not to invest in companies with low CEI scores, HRC has successfully pressured businesses dependent on such investments to prove their wokeness by scoring high across all LGBTQ+ metrics.

On May 31st the Human Rights Campaign, together with many other left-wing advocacy groups, signed on to a statement asking businesses supporting the LGBTQ+ community to stand up against what the signatories called “anti-LGBTQ+ extremism.”

Any departure from HRC’s left-wing orthodoxy is costly for the politically correct companies that have done very well in the past on the Corporate Equality Index scorecard. Target Corporation is a notable example.

Target has received a 100% rating for meeting all the CEI criteria for ten consecutive years. However, this year Target has found itself in troubled waters.

The company has faced a backlash from many of its customers for featuring female swimsuits in honor of this year’s Pride Month, which accommodated transgender females’ private parts. Swimsuits for adults had a circular tag reading “Tuck-Friendly Construction,” and “Extra Crotch Coverage.” A kid’s swimsuit for sale had a tag reading: “Thoughtfully Fit on Multiple Body Types and Gender Expressions.”

At first, Target’s CEO Brian Cornell defended his company’s ‘tuck friendly’ female swimwear collection. But as the backlash continued, Target’s senior management reversed course in response to the negative customer reaction, threats of boycotts, and safety concerns. It removed the offending merchandise from the front of its stores.

Despite its years-long unwavering support for LGBTQ+ causes, Target Corporation suddenly became a major target for LGBTQ+ activists. The May 31st statement that HRC signed called on Target to “put Pride merchandise back on the sales floor and online in full.”

An LGBTQ+ activist sent e-mails threatening to bomb several Target locations unless “you stop cowering and bring back your LGBT merchandise.”

The Human Rights Campaign and other left-wing LGBTQ+ activist groups are not only doing everything they can to keep businesses in line with their agenda. These leftist groups have also condemned feminists who reject HRC’s pronouncement that the word ‘women’ “always includes trans women. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it.”

Feminists, including lesbians, who disagree with HRC’s definition of ‘women’ are derided as trans exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs for short). Activist trans women and their supporters hurl the TERF epithet at feminists who do not believe in prioritizing gender fluidity in identity and expression over preserving the hard-fought advancements to end inequality between the two biological sexes.

As Meghan Murphy, the founder and editor of Feminist Current, wrote several years ago, “The term, ‘TERF,’ is itself an intentional manipulation, intended to reframe feminist ideas and activism as ‘exclusionary,’ rather than foundational to the women’s liberation movement.” The epithet is used to pillory women who dissent from the Left’s pro-trans party line in order “to shut them up, bully them, condemn them, smear them, humiliate them, and dismiss them.”

The Human Rights Campaign’s jihad against those who oppose its extremist left-wing transgender agenda is helping to divide Americans into warring camps.

HRC demands that businesses comply with “Transgender Inclusion Best Practices” or risk losing investments by major buy-side funds that rely on CEI scores in making their investment decisions. This pits businesses who want to remain in good graces with HRC and “socially conscious” buy-side funds against many of these businesses’ regular customers who are offended by having trans images and merchandise shoved in their faces.

HRC favors the handover of control of parents’ school-age children to teachers and administrators when it comes to sensitive issues such as gender identity, pitting schools against parents.

HRC favors allowing biological males who self-identify as females to participate in girls’ and women’s sports despite the unfair competitive advantages that biological males have over biological females with regard to their respective physiologies and anatomies.

Trans activists are even creating divisions within the broader LGBTQ+ community of which they are a part. Lesbians are the first named group in that community. Nevertheless, trans activists condemn lesbian feminists who define the terms “men” and “women” based on their biological sex rather than on their self-identified gender preference, particularly when it comes to these lesbians’ same-sex romantic relationships.

The Human Rights Campaign’s claim that LGBTQ+ Americans in 2023 are “living in a state of emergency” is pure hype. It is an artifice meant to use pliant politicians like President Biden, business leaders, the media, and educators as tools to accelerate the normalization of transgender activists’ extremist agenda that most Americans do not accept today.
