Counterattack was the second in the month; fighter jets carried out a similar mission in late October.
U.S. fighter jets on Wednesday bombed a weapons warehouse in Syria used by Iranian-backed militias in what the Pentagon said was retaliation for persistent attacks on American forces in the region.
Officials said two U.S. F-15 jets dropped multiple bombs on a the storage facility near Maysulun in eastern Syria that was believed to be used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
“The President has no higher priority than the safety of U.S. personnel, and he directed today’s action to make clear that the United States will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.
The counterattack was the second in the month; fighter jets carried out a similar mission in late October.
But the attacks from Iranian-backed rebels have persisted, creating an embarrassment for the Biden administration just weeks after it eased sanctions on Iran and ordered the unfreezing of $6 billion in money for Tehran.
