GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign confirmed on Saturday that some of its internal communications were hacked.
The campaign cited that “foreign sources hostile to the United States,” were to blame, referencing a Microsoft report that claimed hackers from Iran “sent a spear phishing email in June to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign.”
Among the hacked emails were internal communications that included research the campaign did on Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, as part of the vetting process and “potential vulnerabilities” that he may have, according to The Daily Wire.
Politico reported Saturday that it began receiving emails from anonymous accounts with documents related to the 45th president.
The outlet says that it has not independently found the identity of the hacker.
“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.
“On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a ‘high ranking official’ on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee," the statement continued.
