Former Hamas Interior Minister Fathi Hammad
admitted Saturday that Hamas has been paving a new road near the Israeli
border with the northern Gaza Strip.
According to Hammad, the road, located
southeast of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, was intended for the use of the Izzedine
al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, in future conflicts with
Israel.
"The road has been secretly built under heavy
security and will be used when the time is right for us to launch an
attack against our enemy," said Hammad during a speech in Khan Younis.
"The Zionist occupier will be surprised at
Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades' capabilities in the next military
confrontation," the former minister threatened. "Since the last round of
fighting, Hamas' military wing has been reinforced. The Zionists
haven't got the slightest inkling of what surprises await them."
Meantime, a senior Qatari official said Israel
has authorized all reconstruction projects his country was funding to
rehabilitate the Gaza Strip.
President of the Qatari National Committee for
Reconstruction of Gaza, Muhammad al-Amadi, told the Palestinian news
agency Ma'an that "the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip is progressing
at a satisfactory rate as construction materials are being transferred
to Gaza daily without interference."
