Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a
police officer noticed a woman driving suspiciously on Sunday morning
and motioned her to stop. She then shouted "Allahu akbar" (God in great)
and detonated a bomb.
A female Palestinian terrorist set off a bomb
after being pulled over by Israeli police near the Jerusalem suburb of
Maaleh Adumim on Sunday morning. The terrorist was seriously wounded in
the blast, which also lightly wounded a police officer.
The incident was the latest in a recent surge
of Palestinian terrorism which has killed four Israelis and wounded many
more. On Saturday, five Israelis were wounded in two separate stabbing
attacks in Jerusalem.
The terrorist was identified as a 31-year-old resident of Jericho.
The terrorist was transported to Hadassah Ein
Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem for treatment while the wounded police
officer was brought to Shaare Zedek Medical Center, also in Jerusalem.
Upon examination of the terrorist's car, a gas
balloon was found inside, which was likely meant to have been used to
magnify the power of the bomb.
Police believe the terrorist was on her way to
carry out a major attack in Jerusalem and the police officer's
alertness thwarted a potential mass-casualty event in Israel's capital
city.
Sunday's incident marked the first use of a
bomb by Palestinian terrorists in the ongoing wave of violence, during
which a majority of attacks have been carried out by knife-wielding
assailants.
Later on Sunday morning, a Palestinian gunman opened
fire on an Israeli vehicle on the border between Israel and the Gaza
Strip. No one was injured in the incident, but the vehicle was damaged.
