Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon has called on
Israeli citizens who own licensed guns to carry them, and use them if
they find themselves at the scene of a terrorist attack.
In interviews to the media over the weekend,
Ya'alon said that the recent wave of attacks carried out by "lone wolf"
terrorists was the result of the security establishment's success in
neutralizing organized terrorism.
"The [current] wave of terrorism is mostly
rock-throwing, firebombs, and attempted car rammings," Ya'alon said.
"The reason for that is the damage we've done in the past two years to
the terrorist infrastructure, which is such that they can't really carry
out serious attacks, despite their attempts to do so.
"What is taking hold is their incitement,
false propaganda aimed at our supposed desire to harm the mosque on the
Temple Mount."
The defense minister noted that Israel was examining ways of limiting the activity of the Islamic Movement in Israel.
"We are battling for the State of Israel as
the Jewish state. ... We are alert, acting responsibly. [Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu] and I are not men of slogans. ... If the Palestinian
Authority opts for escalation, we'll respond accordingly," Ya'alon
said.
