A vehicle slammed into soldiers guarding a
Paris suburb, injuring six of them, in what appeared to be a ramming
attack, French police said Wednesday. Two soldiers were reportedly in
serious condition, while the other four sustained minor injuries. The
vehicle fled the scene.
A Paris Police spokesman said the vehicle
appeared to clearly target soldiers from the Sentinelle security force,
created after Islamic extremist attacks in 2015, but the motive was
unclear.
The incident, which took place at about 8 a.m.
(local time) outside military barracks at the northwestern Paris suburb
of Levallois-Perret, was the latest of several attacks targeting
security forces guarding high-profile sites in the country.
The Paris Police said that a search for the driver and the vehicle, described as dark-colored and probably a BMW, was underway.
Levallois Mayor Patrick Balkany said a car
parked in an alley drove into the soldiers as they left their barracks
to go on patrol duty. He denounced what he called an "odious attack" and
said it was "without a doubt deliberate."
French counterterrorism investigators are heading the probe into the incident.
A judicial source said the DGSI internal intelligence agency was also involved in the investigation, a move that in France shows the matter is being treated as a probable act of terrorism.
The incident comes four days after a mentally unstable teenager tried to attack security forces guarding the Eiffel Tower.
France has been under a state of emergency since November 2015 and has seen a string of attacks on security forces who have been regularly targeted, particularly those guarding key tourist sites.
